Moving for the Master:
Run for God blends Fitness and Faith In a spiritual and physical rut and want to get moving again after the winter blahs? A new ministry by Jeff and Kelly Larrimore can help you do just that. Called “The Run for God,” it’s a 12-week blend of Bible study, prayer and exercise. Don’t let the name mislead you, Jeff says. This is a program for beginning runners or walkers, too. Beginning Thursday, March 26, participants began meeting at 7 p.m. each Thursday for 15 minutes of devotions and 30 minutes of walking or running. The sessions will continue through June 11. “There will be people of all ages and fitness levels, but the important thing is to go at a pace that you feel comfortable with,” Jeff says. “For some people it may be a Walk for God. The important thing is to encourage people to go to the highest level they can. “Everyone is so busy these days, and the first things we seem to skip is our time with God and time to take care of our health,” Kelly adds. “You have to purposely spend time with God and set a time to exercise or it just won’t happen. Our goal is that everyone involved in the program will make Bible study and exercise a priority in their lives. “By adding these two disciplines to your daily routine, we feel confident that you’ll grow stronger in your walk with God and will improve your overall spiritual and physical health.” Jeff and Kelly now regularly run together and have their own exercise routines but it wasn’t always that way. It took encouragement from co-workers at Wake Forest University where she works as an office manager and program administrator for Kelly to start running in 2010.
“I always admired people who were dedicated and exercised regularly, and wanted to add it to my own life so I started off slow and began running around my neighborhood and as I grew stronger, I added more distance,” she says, noting that she now sleeps better, eats healthier, feels stronger, and better manages stress.
A ministry is born The couple got the idea to bring the Run for God concept to Triad after Kelly won a contest on WBFJ-FM to participate in another church’s Run for God 5K in Clemmons. “River Oaks Community Church began their Run for God program four years ago, and it has grown by leaps and bounds, so we decided it might be something we’d like to bring to Triad,” says Jeff, who works as a controller for a plastics company. “Kelly and I run regularly and wanted to share this passion with others as a ministry through the church.” There are several Run for God efforts across the nation. All are offshoots of the ministry created by Mitchell Hollis of Varnell, Georgia, whose run in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta in 2007 marked a turning point in his own spiritual life and health. Hollis’ successful finish in the race sparked the Run for God ministry in 2010 and the stick figure runner, logo and T-shirt that made it easy for him to share his faith simply by answering questions about his T-shirt when people saw him run.
“The Run for God Program is a way to reach out to the members and community to spread the Gospel first,”
Jeff explains, “but also to challenge people to set spiritual and physical goals as we relate the discipline it takes to grow spiritually to the challenge it takes to run and exercise regularly.” The Run for God ministry is open to anyone. While there are no fees, participants are encouraged to add two additional workouts during the week to stay on track with the program, whether it’s walking or running at a park, neighborhood or fitness center, or gym. As with any exercise program, Jeff says participants should check first with their doctors if they have any concerns before beginning the Run for God program. The Larrimores are excited to see what God will do with the ministry, and have already seen the impact on their own lives. “We both have a set time of devotion and prayer each day,” Jeff says. “Kelly does it in the mornings when she first wakes up, and I do it during my lunch hour. I spend my running time praying as it helps pass the time and gives me a time alone with God. I work out in the mornings at a local gym before work by running, cycling in a spin class, and doing strength training.
“We both are volunteers in the Life Support Counseling Ministry and believe we’ll bring that same spirit of encouraging and lifting up others to this ministry too,” Jeff says. “That’s so important because you need encouragement to start and keep at it, which is the biggest challenge anyone faces trying to make a change when life is already so hectic. “It’s our desire is to offer support and encour-

I worry about things like nuclear war, asteroids crashing into the earth, and things like that. Is this the way the world will end? -- Mrs. L.T.

The Bible doesn’t say exactly how the world will come to an end, but it does stress that someday this will happen, and when it does, the destruction will be total and absolute. The Bible says,
“That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat” (2 Peter 3:12) But the Bible says two other things that are equally important. First, it tells us that this will happen only at God’s command, and in God’s time. Wars may rage; power-hungry despots may terrorize; accidents and natural disasters may destroy, but the future is in God’s hands, and He alone will bring an end to the world. Second, the Bible tells us that the end of the world -- will not be the end! God will create a new world, one that’s perfect and free from sin, sickness, death and fear. “In keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, where righteousness dwells” (2 Peter 3:13). All this is possible because of Christ’s victory over death and hell. Don’t live in constant fear of the future. Instead, by faith put your life
and your future into Christ’s hands. He alone is our hope, and He alone is our security. The Bible says,
“Neither the present nor the future... will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 8:38-39)

The 21st Century is seeing many changes in religion. Young adults are interested in faith but tend to reject the religion of their parents and their childhood teachings. They feel little loyalty to the faith they were taught as children. They lean toward moral relativism. They like to make their own moral standards and choose whatever denomination meets their felt needs. Many young
adults who claim to be spiritual are not tied to any particular religious denomination. A five-year Barna research study, recently completed with more than 22,000 surveyed, found young adults are leaving the Church. Most young adults disengaged from active participation in the Christian faith during college years. This problem is very complex and hard to understand. Many had their belief system destroyed by ungodly professors. Some are encouraged to reject the faith of their parents. Others reject the lifestyle of their religious parents and find it inconsistent with basic 21st century values. They are often taught that morality is relative. They believe what is good for one may be bad for another. They have grown up in a culture with all the emphasis on self. The moral climate in our society has left them with no absolutes. In their search for spirituality, many have joined house church groups. Others have decided to leave their faith completely. As Generation Y leaves the church, pastors and all Christians should be concerned. The church of tomorrow depends on those young adults. Only the Bible and a relationship with Christ can bring them home again.

Think about the types of seeds you have been sowing. Are you sowing encouragement, hope, blessing, love? Then that’s what you’ll reap in the future. But if you’ve been sowing criticism, judgment and anger, you’re probably already reaping a bad harvest. It’s time to start changing your seed.

Today, I encourage you to pray and ask God to help you uproot any negative seeds you may have planted in the past and begin sowing good seeds for your future. As you stay obedient to the Word of God, you’ll see those seeds grow. You’ll rise up higher and enjoy the harvest of blessing God has promised you.

Father, search my heart today. Show me any bad seeds that need to be uprooted. Help me, by Your Spirit, to plant good seeds for my future. Use me for Your glory in Jesus’ name. Amen.

The Bible mentions several people involved in the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. This is something that you rarely, if ever, find in fairy tales and folklore. You find Mary Magdalene, Joseph of Arimethea, James and John, the sons of Zebedee, and five hundred other witnesses. Either this was the most cleverly concocted hoax ever perpetuated on the world even fooling Roman politicians and Jewish spiritual leaders, or it really was the most pivotal event in human history.
Life Lesson:
The death, burial and resurrection of Jesus are historically recorded events that would stand up in a court of law The intriguing thing to note is that how you look at this tells how you look at heaven, hell, life, death, faith, love and forgiveness. There were five hundred witnesses and some of them were famous. There was overwhelming and undeniable proof! Millions of lives today have changed because of this, including mine. The calendar itself forever changed with the birth and death of Jesus (BC and AD). The church would forever after worship on Sunday. Are you still waiting for more informa-

tion? Friend, you have enough information to make an educated decision but it still requires a step of faith. Take the chance. I did. My life was forever changed for the better. Today can be the start of a brand new life for you. Ask God to forgive you right now and He will.
Life Lesson:
Jesus claimed the power to heal illness. He did it. He also claimed He had the power to forgive sins. He did it. Dear Jesus, Thank You for dying for me so that I could be forgiven. Thank You for being resurrected, and that I could have a new life. I ask You to forgive me of all of my sins. Lord, I have done wrong things, and I am sorry. Thank You for Your forgiveness. Please give me the power to live for You, all the days of my life. In Jesus’ name, Amen. Congratulations, you just made the best decision you will ever make or recommitted yourself to the greatest cause...the cause of Christ. I carry the title of professional church worker which means that I am paid to be good. (I guess that means in retirement I can be good for nothing.) The fact is, however, I needed the church long before I ever became a pastor. My experience as a teenager was pretty rocky. I came from a good family with parents who loved me but I was determined to go my own way even if that meant choosing the path of self-destruction. Fortunately God provided some wonderful “church” people who loved me unconditionally and helped me through the most difficult times. After more than two decades in the ministry, I can easily say that my need for the church is as great today as it ever was. Sometimes I will turn to our congregation on Sunday morning and say, “Do you know why I’m here? It’s because I am a broken, fallen, sinful human being who desperately needs to hear about God’s forgiveness in Christ. And
I need the encouragement of brothers and sisters in Christ to help me along the way.”
about people. That’s what church is, namely, God’s people gathered together around his Word and Holy Sacraments. This is the place where God comes to us to strengthen our faith in Christ, and the place from which God sends us out into his creation to extend the love and forgiveness of Christ to others.
It’s that simple.
My life has been shaped by the gift and blessing of the church. And certainly this same thing can be said by countless others right here in Kernersville. I am thankful that Kernersville has this new publication, Church Today, so that we can encourage one another with the great things that God is doing both here and around the world.
By now it should be obvious that when I use the word church I am really talking

The Secret of Contentment
“I pray that you will begin to understand how incredibly great his power is to help those who believe him. It is that same mighty power that raised Christ from the dead . . .” Ephesians 1:19-20
Jesus told His disciples that the world would hate them. They would be “as sheep in the midst of wolves.” They would be arrested, scourged, and brought before governors and kings. Even their loved ones would persecute them. As the world hated and persecuted Him, so it would treat His servants. Thousands of Christians have learned the secret of contentment and joy in trial. Some of the happiest Christians I have met have been life-long sufferers. They have had every reason to sigh and complain, being denied so many privileges and pleasures that they see others enjoy, yet they have found greater cause for gratitude and joy than many who are prosperous, vigorous, and strong.
In all ages, Christians have found it possible to maintain the spirit of joy in the hour of trial. In circumstances that would have felled most men, they have so completely risen above them that they actually have used the circumstances to serve and glorify Christ.

I remember a Family Circus cartoon published in a newspaper some 30 years ago. A family was sitting at the dinner table with numerous bowls of food in the center. A little boy, probably at the mischievous age of Dennis the Menace, spoke up as the dad was ready to give the meal time prayer: “Do we have to say a prayer now,” said the boy. “We blessed this food yesterday.” It is easy to take for granted the blessings God consistently gives us. If we are fortunate, our health is the same today as it was yesterday. Our family gathered around the dinner table today was there yesterday. The job we went to yesterday is the job we go to today. Our friends are a constant course of support and affirmation. Although some things change from day to day, we all have many consistent blessings in our lives. Our tendency is to take them for granted.
Could you imagine the overwhelming turmoil in your life if you had to start over every day and rebuild your life from scratch? Instead, God provides stability as the foundation with important cornerstones of health, family, friends and meaningful employment. That allows us to live in peace as we tackle the new challenges that come our way. Don’t take for granted the constants in your life. They are blessings that deserve our thanksgiving. Know that His love for you is forever and is a foundation that gives you strength to tackle what is new.

to benefit teenage suicide prevention will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church, located at 306 S. Main St., on Saturday, April 11 at 7 p.m. The choirs of Glenn High School, led by Director Carol Earnhardt, will perform. Choirs performing include: Glenn Concert Choir, Varsity Women’s Choir, Men’s Ensemble and Women’s Choir. The love offering will go to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.

Bunker Hill United Methodist Church hosted the annual Good Friday Cross Walk on April 3, beginning on North Main Street, then traveling through downtown Kernersville before ending at Mt. Gur Cemetery off West Bodenhamer Street, The event brings together dozens of participants from churches throughout the Kernersville area who walk in silent pilgrimage honoring the journey made by Christ before His crucifixion.
