‘Sarsaparilla Sue’ aka Susie Seeger enjoys the taste of victory when the results of the Whiskey Flat Days honorary mayor’s race was announced Sunday. Looking on are last year’s co-mayors, ‘Deadeye Dave’ Redman and ‘Mountain Mouth Kate’ McDonald. Michael Batelaan Kern River Courier

Weather may have dampened the Whiskey Flat Days crowds, but not the event’s mayor race Michael Batelaan Courier Spotlight In a hard-fought battle, 'Sarsaparilla Sue' came out on top in this year's Whiskey Flat Mayor's race. The new Deputy Mayor, 'South Fork Sass'n Cathy' ran and raised funds for the Nuui Cunni Cultural Center and for the Hot Springs Wetland Preservation fund. 'South Fork Sass'n Cathy,' aka: Catherine Robinson Day Paradise

was born and raised in Weldon, South Fork of the Kern River Valley. South Fork Sass'n Cathy traveled the dusty and wet roads and trails of the Kern River Valley, lookin' to sell bribes to all her family, friends and neighbors along the way. She raised a total of $2,150 to be split between her two charities. She is still selling raffle tickets for Cow Plop Bingo $50 a ticket; only 100 tickets will be sold. Prize money will be $1,250 and the proceeds also to be split between her charities. Our new Whiskey Flat Honorary Mayor, 'Sarsaparilla Sue' solicited funds for the

She now works for the Skilled Nursing Facility as an Activities Director and it has never been the same since she arrived. 'Sarsaparilla Sue,' as the story goes, has it decided to give up her esteemed career as a top-ranking ferris wheel extraordinaire in the Whiskey Flat Days Carnival and was proud to run for the high office of Whiskey Flat mayor. Now many of you may ask your-

Remembering the Alamo

On February 24 in 1836, in San Antonio, Texas, Colonel William Travis issued a call for help on behalf of the Texan troops defending the Alamo. When the Texas revolution began in 1835, Travis was given command of troops in the recently captured city of San Antonio de Bexar (now San Antonio). On February 23, 1836, a large Mexican force commanded by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Ana arrived in San Antonio. Travis and his troops took shelter in the Alamo, where they were joined by a volunteer force led by Colonel James Bowie. Though Santa Ana's 5,000 troops outnumbered the several hundred Texans, Travis and his men did not give up. On February 24, they answered Santa Ana's call for surrender with a shot from the Alamo's cannon. The Mexican general ordered his forces to launch a siege. Mexican forces stormed the Alamo, killing Travis, Bowie and 190 of their men. Despite the loss of the fort, the Texan troops managed to inflict huge losses on their enemy. The defense of the Alamo became a powerful symbol for the Texas revolution. At the Battle of San Jacinto on April 21, 910 Texan soldiers commanded by Sam Houston defeated Santa Ana's army of 1,250 men, spurred on by cries of "Remember the Alamo!"

Possible Phone Scam using Sheriff Department On February 18, the Kern County Sheriff's Office became aware of a possible scam involving an individual misidentifying himself as an employee of the Sheriff's Office. A citizen reported that she received a phone call that day during the afternoon hours from a person who said he worked for the Sheriff's Office and was inquiring as to why she had missed jury duty. He then began asking the citizen to confirm information, such as the citizen's name and address. At that point the citizen became suspicious and informed the caller that she would contact Jury Services to verify she had missed jury duty. The caller then became very upset and told the citizen there was a warrant out for her arrest and that if she hung up she would be arrested. The citizen advised the caller she did not believe him, because the call was received on a Saturday and the caller was calling from an 818 area code, which is in Southern California. The caller then made an obscene comment to the citizen and hung up. The Sheriff's Office received a report involving a similar incident earlier this year. The Sheriff's Office would like to remind citizens to never provide personal information to an unknown caller. If anyone receives a similar call, please report it to the Sheriff's Office at 661-861-3110.

Announcements

Over the years, I have in different columns mentioned my war with the ground squirrels. Today I want to write about the triMiddleworth als and tribulations of those rascals and what I've tried to do to clear my yard of the pesky rodents. It has become apparent because of the excessive rain and snow that we have had that the ground is soft. How soft it was, was brought to light over the last couple of days, I was behind my workshop straightening bricks and other items that just needed some attention. As I walked behind the shop the ground under my feet gave way and there I was standing knee deep in a ground squirrel home! As I moved to get out of the hole I created another one as the ground there also gave away. It seems that they had made free rein of a 5 x 10 space infested by the critters. There are several things you can do to get rid of a ground squirrel and here's a couple that I have used over the years (which obviously hasn't worked too well). The most successful method of getting them out and away is by using a Have a Heart Trap. Fill the trap with peanuts, set it near a hole and you often will get a ground squirrel and in addition a bird or a cat. In the bigger traps I have gotten blue jays,

Suspect arrested for mail theft involving local area On February 10, at approximately 3:20 p.m., deputies from the Ridgecrest Substation responded to a report of a mail theft in progress in the Inyokern area. The reporting party provided the Sheriff's Office with the suspect's description and the description of the vehicle he was driving. Deputies recognized the description of the suspect and used this information to locate Steven O'Reilly, 30 years old. O'Reilly, who had three felony warrants for his arrest and is on probation, was located at a residence in the 6600 block of Las Flores Avenue in Inyokern. O'Reilly was found inside the residence hiding under a pile of clothing, and was arrested after he resisted arrest. The vehicle O'Reilly was driving was located on the property, which was found to be a reported stolen vehicle from Ridgecrest. During the investigation, deputies located over 500 pieces of stolen mail inside the vehicle, belonging to over 230 victims from the areas of Bakersfield, Ridgecrest, Inyokern, Lake Isabella, Weldon, Wofford Heights, and Caliente. Deputies sorted through the mail and found over 40 tax documents, including W2 and 1099 tax forms and packages belonging to multiple mail theft victims. O'Reilly was positively identified by the reporting party as the suspect who removed mail from nearby mailboxes and driving the stolen vehicle. O'Reilly was booked at the Kern County Sheriff's Office Central Receiving Facility for charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, committing mail theft, resisting arrest, and his outstanding warrants. Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading on March 2, the birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. "We hope to instill a love for books in children by celebrating Dr. Seuss's birthday," said Rachel Hoetker, UWKC's Early Childhood Development Program Manager. She continued, "Taking the time to read to a child, and making it fun, is a great investment in that child's success."

raccoons, and skunks. The traps I use are called 'Have a Heart' because when caught in the trap, critters are not hurt. The one cat I caught I released on the spot and was he mad! He went about 10 feet, arched his back, hissed at me and went over the bank and into the empty lot below. I know I am straying from my adventures with ground squirrels but it's all part of the story. Below our lot is a huge bush maybe 30 x 30 feet and 10 feet high and I believe that every animal known to man lives there and then comes up onto my lot to eat and dig holes. We tried something new last week after the cave-in episode; we had this huge jar of habanera pepper marinade which was almost hot enough to melt the glass it was stored in. I took that jar with intensely hot sauce and poured it into 4 ground squirrel holes. The next day I did see a ground squirrel with his head stuck in the water bowl with marinade smeared on his nose. So far this year I have trapped 6 ground squirrels and still they come. My yard is a breeding ground for the little rodents. All the ones I trap I put in the back of my truck and travel far from civilization up river and release them. My greatest fear is that they are probably building an army and plan to march on me in some near distant future.

It's a really important step to commit to reading your Bible regularly for a short period, maybe a few weeks. It's a great way to get started, but you should never leave it there. Jesus said, "If you continue in My word, then you are truly disciples of Mine" (John 8:31b NASB). It's the long-term commitment to learning from Jesus and his Word that makes us his disciples. How do you continue in the Word and stay connected with Jesus through his Word for the long term? ■ 1. Make the decision to do it. It starts with your commitment. Don't wait for a better time to make God's Word a regular part of your life. Start your commitment today. ■ 2. Make a declaration. Announce your intentions to others. Hold yourself accountable. If you keep your commitment to God a secret, it's easier to slip up. ■ 3. Make a determination. Don't allow anything to knock you off your commitment. Be absolutely determined to make this a permanent habit in your life, particularly in the early months. If you start skipping

days, it'll be much harder to stay committed to God's Word. ■ 4. Double up. Get a spiritual partner to come alongside you for support and encouragement. This is someone with whom you can share what you learn in your quiet times. It could be someone in your small group, a friend, or a family member. The Bible says, "Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed" (Ecclesiastes 4:9 NLT). Spending time with God should be a lifelong habit, not a passing fancy. Research shows you need to do something for about six weeks straight to build a habit. Make God's Word part of your life today - and for the rest of your life.

His kneel is real Chris Wenzel Courier Columnist Recently, I had the great joy and honor of traveling to Israel and experience the Bible like I have never before. One of the places I visited was Caesarea Wenzel Maritima. It was a massive port city located along the Mediterranean Sea, built by King Herod the Great in honor of Caesar. Herod himself lived here in an impressive palace that he built along the water's edge. Standing among the ruins, I could get a sense of just how big and important of a place it was. It was said to have rivaled the city of Pompeii in Italy. Probably the most interesting and significant story in the Bible that took place in Caesarea Maritima was the conversion of Cornelius. The story is found in Acts 10. This moment in Scripture is significant because this is the first time the gospel would be preached to a Gentile. As a result, millions of non-Jewish people have been exposed to the good news of Jesus Christ! God was strategic in his planning, because this city was populated mostly by Gentiles. But more importantly, this city connected Rome to the entire Middle East and surrounding cities of the Mediterranean Sea. Thousands of people could potentially be exposed to the Gospel, and take it to the farthest reaches of the world! There are other important points I pull from this story.

First, prayer played an integral part in both Peter and Cornelius' life. These men were consistent in praying, to the point that they knew God was speaking to them. The more consistently we pray, the easier it becomes to recognize God speaking to us. So much so, that God can be as specific with us as Peter and Cornelius. Secondly, value others above yourself. We know that Peter knew Jesus, yet as a devout Jewish man he was also obedient to certain Jewish laws. God was about to change that up! Peter, after seeing a vision of certain animals that he was told to eat that were forbidden, he is summoned to go to a house of a Gentile. This is also forbidden, yet knowing that God was calling, he went without hesitation. Gentiles were pagan worshippers, and considered unclean and impure people. Yet, God was already softening and humbling Peter's heart for His purpose. Just staying in the home of a tanner, Peter was considered unclean since Simon worked with dead animals. Peter could have refused, but at what great cost? Who is God calling you to reach out to? Lastly, the Holy Spirit does the work. Peter shared his own personal experiences with Jesus, and his own eyewitness account, but the Holy Spirit did the work of bringing understanding. Don't be afraid to share your own experiences with Jesus, because you will be surprised by what the Holy Spirit can do. It all begins on your knees! Christopher Wenzel is pastor of Canyon Hills-Kern River Valley (Formerly New Life Assembly of God)

Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist Whiskey Flat Days reminded us of our past. The gun slingers, the shoot outs in the streets are all part of the heritage of the Old West. Back then, liv- Thal ing to age 50 was considered old, if the toil of life didn't take you sooner. If you did get sick or injured, medical science was in its infancy and in the growing west, "doc" had about as much education as possibly a high school graduate has today, and it was not in the medical sciences, as they were just emerging. Nursing just started in the 1870's. Doctors were paid by barter. How many chickens to fix a leg? Today, chickens, or even a side of beef won't work. Cash is king, and it takes plenty of it to access care. The good news is that age 50 is now "middle age" and 90 or even one hundred is "old". But what is our future? Life expectancy will be a slower growth, and might even come to a standstill. The new Trump administration campaigned on immediately getting rid of the current "Affordable Care Act" system known as ObamaCare and replace it with something new and better. It is much easier to say in a campaign than do in office. There are so many moving parts to the legislation and the regulations that followed. The Medicaid program (Medi-Cal here in California) was expanded to cover more people with low incomes.

If the ACA were terminated, would they be without coverage? Would hospital funding be restored to provide for the indigent? Then there are the insurance plans. Many have withdrawn from health coverage, with several more companies closely looking at leaving in 2018 as they are suffering losses. With access of coverage for all during the "Open Enrollments", anyone with medical issues can obtain insurance. So, pay a few hundred a month, get the surgery for tens of thousands, and then feel better and drop the plan? During the last Open Enrollment, over 9 million Americans joined an insurance plan, even with the uncertainty of plan survival. How many will be rushing to doctors to get needed care? And what of the doctors? The sole practice is fading quickly from the scene, and primary care doctors are in short supply. Fewer are accepting patients from ACA plans, as the reimbursements are less than overhead. The Republican Congress and White house has their challenges. We all recognize the current system can't survive, the prior system left too many citizens without care, and a future system will need to address the cost of care while satisfying the needs of the providers and the public. Looks like a good time to eat some chicken before I need to pay my next doctor's bill. Harry P. “Moana” builds on past successes Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Moana” (PG) - Disney's latest fairy-tale adventure puts a chieftain's daughter (so technically not a princess) on an ocean-faring adventure to restore the heart of a Pacific goddess. Moana (voiced by teenage newcomer Auli'i Cravalho) is accompanied by a rooster sidekick and the scene-stealing presence of Maui (Dwayne Johnson), a once-powerful demigod with solid comedic timing and delivery. Moana has some depth -- she's not looking for a charming chieftain's son -- and the movie's not afraid to explore those depths. Disney's old magic is back and clearly on display: Veteran directors Ron Clements and John Musker ("Aladdin," "Little Mermaid") bring expert knowledge of the genre and build on their past successes. Lin Manuel Miranda ("Hamilton") doing the music was an obvious choice, and a wise one. “Jackie” (R) - In the aftermath of JFK's assassination, Jacqueline (Natalie Portman) finds herself in a storm that only seems to expand. Centered around a Time magazine interview about a week after the shooting, Jackie has a chance to get some grip on the narrative while giving her account to a journalist (Billy Crudup). Beyond raising her children and processing massive amounts grief, Jackie also has to contend with the political maneuvering going on around her

Scene from "Moana"

and reflected in Robert Kennedy's own grief (Peter Skaarsgard). It all really rides on Portman's performance, and she handles it with great talent. Jackie's emotions can gallop across her face while she keeps composure. Her poise is important to people, even if nobody could blame the most camera-ready woman the Western world for slipping. “The Eyes of My Mother” (R) - This black-and-white genretwisting artistic horror film manages to send surprises and shivers through the screen. Francesca (Kika Magalhaes) learns from her mother all about human anatomy, the dangers of loneliness and how not to be queasy around guts. One day, their remote farmhouse is attacked by a stranger, who is then strung up by the vengeful father. The chained man becomes Francesca's first victim -- her first "friend." Things spiral as the young Francesca becomes more prolific and disturbing. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Results start to show in mid-March. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You're likely to feel somewhat Crabby these days, so watch what you say, or you could find yourself making lots of apologies. Your mood starts to brighten by the weekend. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Your pride might still be hurting from those unflattering remarks someone made about you. But cheer up, you're about to prove once again why you're the Top Cat in whatever you do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A misunderstanding with a co-worker could become a real problem unless it's resolved soon. Allow a third party to come in and assess the situation without

pressure or prejudice. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Call a family meeting to discuss the care of a loved one at this difficult time. Be careful not to let yourself be pushed into shouldering the full burden on your own. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) An upcoming decision could open the way to an exciting venture. However, there are some risks you should know about. Ask more questions before making a commitment. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Personal matters need your attention during the earlier part of the week. You can start to shift your focus to your workaday world by midweek. Friday brings news. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You've been going at a hectic pace for quite a while. It's time now for some much-needed rest and recreation to recharge those hardworking batteries. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time to upgrade your current skills or consider getting into an entirely different training program so that you can be prepared for new career opportunities. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Keep a low profile in order to avoid being lured away from the job at hand. Focus on what has to be done, and do it. There'll be time later to enjoy fun with family and friends.

The time for filing claims will not expire before four months from the hearing date noticed above. YOU MAY EXAMINE the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a formal Request for Special Notice of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in section 1250 of the California Probate Code. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for the Petitioner: Jamie P. Gelber, Attorney At Law P.O. NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of the sale, the opening bid may be less than the total debt. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed and if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866) 960-8299 or visit this Internet Website http://www.altisource.com/MortgageServices/Default Management/TrusteeServices.aspx using the file number assigned to this case: 2015-03543-CA. Information about postponements that are very short in duration or that occur close in time to the scheduled sale may not immediately be reflected in the telephone information or on the Internet Website. The best way to verify postponement information is to attend the scheduled sale. Date: February 3, 2017.
