Michael Batelaan Courier Weekend Into everyone’s life a little rain must fall and being prepared is your best umbrella insurance policy. Even with the weather nay-sayers having rain in the weekend forecast a little advance planning will insure that Whiskey Flat Days will always have its sunny bright spots. ■ Get there early The parade begins earlier this year: Saturday at 10 a.m. You will need to allow more time for road detours, traffic, finding event parking and seating prior to the parade start. ■ Bring a chair For the best comfortable warm seat bring your own. ■ Dress in layers Be prepared for varying temperatures morning to evening by dressing in layers. ■ Carry rain gear An umbrella, raincoat, waterproof wind breaker or water-resistant outer shell will greatly improve your ability to stay warm and dry and enjoy the day. ■ Keep aware of schedule changes Although all events are planned to take place rain or shine events may be canceled, moved or postponed at anytime due to weather, safety or other circumstances beyond the control of the event planners, independent entertainment, vendors, volunteers and groups involved. Check with the information booth located on the corner of Tobias and Kernville roads for your most current updates. ■ Plan to have fun Above all make the most of each day and plan to have fun.

In 1991, the Kernville Chamber was having trouble getting the traditional Whiskey Flat Mayor candidates. The then Chamber president, Lanny Borthick got the idea of splitting profits with charitable organizations. The group then agreed on a 60/40 split with the 60 percent going to the Chamber. Historical Society celebrates 50 years Named parade Grand Marshals of the 60th Whiskey Flat Days Parade

You may be wondering how a whole Historical Society got named this year's Whiskey Flat parade Grand Marshal. It's partly because this year the Historical Society, who manages the Kern Valley Museum in Kernville turns 50. The Kern River Valley Historical Society was formed in 1967 to preserve and record the rich history of the region. Eleven people met at Ardis Walker's home in Kernville. The Society filed incorporation papers in 1968 as a 501(c)3 non-

payment of $35,000 and mortgage of $100,000. Through strong funding raising efforts, community support and large donations from private foundations, the Historical Society paid off the mortgage in a mere 2 years. The Historical Society remodeled the doctor's office and with substantial donations of artifacts from the local community and the present museum was opened to the public. Since the Kern River Valley Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization, the Society was able to open and continues to provide free admission to the public. There are over 12,000 visitors each year to the Museum. In 1991, the US Forest Service was ready to destroy the 1896 Mayflower cabin on

The members worked with the Art Association to build the Kernville Chamber of Commerce Building in which a Museum Area was included. It opened in 1975. Greenhorn Mountain. The Historical Society approached the US Forest Service about the cabin and the US Forest Service agreed to sell the cabin to the Historical Society for $1. The Historical Society carefully numbered each log of the structure, dismantled it then erected the restored Mayflower cabin at the Museum. That was a jigsaw puzzle on a grand scale! The $1 US Forest Service invoice for the cabin is actually displayed in the cabin. Also, in 1991, the Historical Society was willed the Ardis and Gayle Walker home in Kernville which contains extensive art, documents and approximately 7,000 books. Things I have noticed...

Digger Pine and me Rod Middleworth Courier Columnist

I can’t help but comment

Remembering Sara Michael Batelaan Courier Publisher It is with great sadness that I must inform friends and the local community of the loss of Sara Wakeman, former Kern River Courier Business Coordinator. I had worked with Sara at the Courier from 2006 and then later would become her employer when I purWakeman chased the business in 2009. At that point it was like she was already a part of a special team transitioning the business without missing a beat. Sara would the one to keep me and the business on the straight and narrow through the thick and the thin. She was the person you could always depend on and most trust worthy. The bright spot in the office when things were down. She was a task master, taking care of things before you even knew they needed taking care of. Bookkeeping, payroll, taxes, subscriptions, phones, you name it! All the while seeking what she could contribute more to. Sara was also a caring friend, a member of more than a business family after more than ten years, she had become part of mine. Sara's obituary reprinted from the Grand Island Independent, Nebraska Sara Sue Wakeman November 10, 1943 - February 6, 2017 Sara Sue Wakeman, 73, of Grand Island, formerly of Lake Isabella, Calif., passed away Monday, Feb. 6, 2017, at Park Place in Grand Island, Nebraska. Sara was born in Grand Island on Nov. 10,

1943, to Charles and Pauline (Jessen) Osborn. She attended Platt Grade School, Walnut Jr. High and graduated from Grand Island Senior in 1961. Sara was a strong and independent woman who lived life on her own terms. She moved to Los Angeles at a young age, and also resided in Arizona and Missouri later on. At the time she became ill with cancer, she worked as an office manager at the Kern River Courier in Wofford Heights, Calif. Sara was married to Robert Wakeman in 1964 in Los Angeles; together they have a son, Scott Wakeman. She is survived by her son, Scott of Belton, Mo.; two grandchildren, Chaz Wakeman and Jessica Israel; and two great-grandchildren, Zoey and Wesley Israel all of Belton Mo. Sara is also survived by her sister, Christie Roy of Greeley, Colo., and brother, Thomas Osborn of Grand Island. She was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters, Charla Kae, Susan Ann, and Judith Ann. To honor Sara's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held at 10:30 a.m. Friday February 10 at LivingstonSondermann Funeral Chapel, with Dorothy Molczyk officiating. Burial of ashes will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the family for later designation. Online condolences may be directed to www.livson.com.

For myself, Courier staff, those clients of which Sara had business relationships over the years, her bookkeeping clients and local businesses that were so privileged to have had her in their employ, I know Sara will be greatly missed. For those of you who like to look for misspelled words, grammatical errors and obvious mistakes last week's column was a 'BONANZA'! Middleworth Under the by-line of "Downside of the Snow" was a column about insurance which I didn't write! It was however, well written and interesting to read. Everyone is probably ready to blame our Editor, but he is innocent and I am the guilty party. In a nutshell I asked that my column for the week before would be exchanged for another about Critters. What I sent and what he received gave readers an obvious column error. I have no doubt that all will be corrected in the future editions of the Courier. Just don't blame the Editor, blame me! What follows below is a brand new freshly written column about a tree! It is called the Digger Pine and me. We have lived here for over 25 years and have watched one particular tree grow from a 3 footer to a 40 footer. A beautiful tree, lots of big branches, in fact a splendid aboral edifice. In other words it was a big magnificent tree. It was however planted on the side of a very steep hill directly in front of our house. In the last few years the tree had made a decided lean of its 40 foot height directly onto our neighbor's house below. Something had to be done.

I called one of our Valley's finest tree trimmers (Doug Mellor) who agreed with me that the possibility of the tree eventually resting on the roof of my neighbor's house was a good bet. So the saws came and the tree went. What I had him leave was a 4 foot trunk which I could use as a feeding station for my Grey Squirrels. An unexpected plus for me and my wife was now an unobstructed view of the lake. A view which had previously been hidden by the Digger Pines bushy branches. This summer when we sit on our front porch with a glass of ice tea and a doughnut without calories, we will have a gorgeous view of Lake Isabella as seen from our side of the hill. My Grandma had always said to me that there is usually no great loss without some small gain. The great loss was the shade of this magnificent tree and the gain was our unobstructed view of the lake. Once again I would apoligize to my readers and promise to do better when I'm asking for changes from the Editor. Look ahead for a "Critter Column" somewhere down the line! Wofford Heights resident Rod Middleworth is a retired security manager for Pacific Bell. Oops! In a total comedy of errors, the computer gremlins or due to the fact that it was the middle of the night, we inadvertently ran columnist Harry Thal’s column from February 3 in Rod’s space! It really wasn’t Rod’s fault... But Rod was his usual great sport about it.

When you're down, the Bible lifts you up alone with God every single day. Whether it's your daily devotional, your quiet time, or your personal inspiration time, you need to be getting alone with God, reading his Word, and talking to him. The Bible says in Psalm 119:114: "You're my place of quiet retreat; I wait for your Word to renew me" (MSG). If you're discouraged and have lost hope, I can tell you one thing about your life without ever meeting you: You're not spending time in God's Word. If you were, you wouldn't be discouraged. The more you read God's Word when you're down, the more he lifts you up. So the next time you feel discouraged, don't come home and turn on the television. Instead, open up your Bible and read it. Listen to Dr. Luke instead of Dr. Phil. God's Word has the power to change your life. It has God's power in it. Nothing else does. The Bible will give you true encouragement.

Message of faith Church of the Old West -

Are you down in the dumps? Do you need a mood elevator? Put down the piece of chocolate cake. Don't have a pity party. Pick up your Bible instead. You need a Word break. God gave us the Bible to encourage us. One way you can think of the Bible is as a mood elevator. The Bible says in Romans 15:4, "For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope" (NIV). Everything in Scripture is written for our encouragement. That's a big statement - but it's true! Even the tough parts of God's Word are there to ultimately encourage our lives in the right direction. That's why we need to spend time

True Love Dan Schlensker, Courier Columnist As we bask in the afterglow of Valentine's Day and I hope there was at least some sort of glow to begin with - our thoughts turn to Schlensker love … even if only a little bit in passing. Maybe it's just the memory of the Valentine exchange in our grade school class or a card and/or gift from a high school sweetheart. In any case, if you received any Valentine greetings or even walked down the Hallmark aisle at the store, you probably saw a variety of warm-fuzzy pictures and read some warm fuzzy words. You may have seen a couple of little cherub-like beings with wings interacting affectionately, or a heart that said, "Be mine." What you surely did not see was a Valentine card that had pictures of people executing vengeful behaviors or words expressing intense animosity! That'd be way out of line for Valentine's Day. And then there's the object of one's love, or the potential recipient of a Valentine greeting from us. That will usually be someone about whom we care greatly and to whom we have some level of commitment. It's pretty easy to show love to the people, who love us. However, in His sermon on the mount in Matthew 5, Jesus turns that principle on its ear, when He says, "You have heard that it was said, 'You shall love your neigh-

bor, and hate your enemy.' But I say to you, love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you in order that you may be sons of your Father who is in heaven; … For if you love those who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax-gatherers do the same?" Jesus is issuing a very challenging command, indeed! But isn't it great that Jesus is so good at practicing what He preaches? The apostle Paul says that "God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us" (Romans 5:8). In other words, while we were still spitting in God's face, disobeying and rebelling against Him, He sent us the ultimate Valentine. Jesus put it this way to Nicodemus in John 3:16, "God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life." Jesus was, like He instructed, loving His enemies! The Valentine God sent to us in Jesus Christ, was definitely not warm and fuzzy looking, though! It was a grizzly, bloody, horrendous sight, in which the Son of God endured torture, shed His blood, and gave His life - thus absorbing the just wrath of God, which we would have received - so that we, through faith in Him, might receive forgiveness of our sins, new life to live to His glory, and His promise of everlasting residence in His eternal mansion. Happy Valentine's Day! Dan Schlensker is pastor of Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church Lake Isabella.

Sequoia National Forest

Legend

The Kern River Ranger District of the Sequoia National Forest is asking the public to identify any pertinent issues that may affect temporary special use permits on the KRRD in 2017. Each year the KRRD receives numerous applications for temporary SUPs for recreation events and other commercial and non-commercial activities on National Forest System lands. Civic groups, schools, individuals, and companies submit these applications. The activities are minor and short term (one time and/or less than one year) in nature. Scoping is required for all Forest Service proposed actions including those that would be categorically excluded under the National Environmental Policy Act. Please help us identify potential impacts to resource conditions such as threatened or endangered species, critical habitat, wetlands, cultural or archaeological sites, or special designation areas including Wilderness and Wild and Scenic River corridors. The responsible official, the District Ranger, will determine if significant impacts exist that warrant a higher level of environmental review for

each activity. The FS seeks to identify any unforeseen circumstances that may affect these activities. If no extraordinary circumstances are identified for these proposals, they may be categorically excluded from documentation in an environmental assessment under 36 CFR 220.6(d)(8) - Approval, modification, or continuation of minor, short-term (1 year or less) special uses of NFS lands or 7 CFR 1b.3(a)(3) Inventories, research activities, and studies, such as resource inventories and routine data collection when such actions are clearly limited in context and intensity. Oftentimes, the permits for these events develop under short notice, and the FS is responsible for processing these permits in a timely manner. This is why it is important for the FS to gather public input in advance of these requests. The KRRD is considering approving applications for these activities during the 2017 season. If you know of any circumstances, have any questions, or need additional information regarding the issuance of these SUPs, please e-mail Special Uses Officer, Artie Colson, at acolson@fs.fed.us or contact him at 661-303-2914. Responses would be helpful if received by March 3, 2017.

Turkey hunting deadlines approach Kirsten Macintyre, CDFW Courier Outdoors California's 2017 general spring wild turkey hunting season opens statewide on March 25 and extends through April 30. The archery-only season will follow immediately afterward, running from May 1-14. Hunters who have a current junior hunting license may also hunt the weekend before the opener, (March 18 and 19), and the two weeks after the general season (May 1-14), using any legal method of take. Shooting hours for spring turkeys are from one-half hour before sunrise to 5 p.m. Both a hunting license and upland game bird stamp are required to hunt turkeys, although an upland stamp is not required for hunters with junior licenses. The bag limit is one bearded turkey per day and a possession limit of no more than three turkeys during all spring seasons combined. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is offering spring turkey hunt opportunities throughout the

state. Please see the Special Hunts webpage to view and apply for hunts in Butte, Sutter, El Dorado, Fresno, Sacramento, Sonoma, Santa Clara and Yuba counties. The application deadline for these hunts is Friday, Feb. 17. Additional opportunities will be offered through the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement, which offers incentives to private landowners who allow wildlife-dependent recreation on their property. Three SHARE Access Permits will be distributed via random drawing for two-day hunts. A $10.50 non-refundable application fee will be charged for each hunt. To apply for these hunts, please go towildlife.ca.gov/licensing/online -sales. To learn more about the SHARE Program, please see wildlife.ca.gov/hunting/share. For places to hunt turkeys and additional tips and information, hunters should refer to the "Guide to Hunting Wild Turkeys in California" on the CDFW website.

Thinking man’s superhero Sam Struckhoff Courier Contributor

PICKS OF THE WEEK “Doctor Strange” (PG-13) Marvel's most mystic hero gets to sling spells and twist time in his own big-screen debut. Wealthy and stylish surgeon Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) loses the steadiness in his hands after a car accident. He finds some supernatural healer up in the Himalayas called the Ancient One (Tilda Swinton with no hair). Instead of just fixing his hands, Strange learns the magic touch (and other spells) and soon finds himself in conflict with an evil sorcerer (Mads Mikkelsen). It stretches the formula for Marvel action, but doesn't step too far outside the Marvel Cinematic Universe comfort zone. Brain-bending special effects fold city horizons together in a cosmic kaleidoscope, but even that loses its novelty after a bit. He's not the hulking he-man type like Captain America or Thor, but this thinking man's superhero has a great premiere with thrills and style, but falls short of being Marvel's first "deep" adventure “Moonlight” (R) - Beautiful, affective, emotive and unique, breakout feature writer/director Barry Jenkins III tells a story about a young man growing up in a poor part of Miami. Chiron is first shown as a young boy (Alex Hibbert), then as a teenager (Ashton Sanders), then in his 20s (Trevante Rhodes), each time facing a pivotal moment in his life. His single mother

Benedict Cumberbatch in "Doctor Strange"

(Naomie Harris) is spiraling into addiction, and his only surrogate for familial stability comes from the drug dealer who feeds off mom's habit (Mahershala Ali). The movie, adapted from a play by Tarell Alvin McCraney, deals with difficult real-world struggles -being poor and black in Miami pushes you out, and to be gay in those neighborhoods means to be further marginalized and threatened -- and does so in a way that builds compassion without requiring similar experiences from the audience. “Allied” (R) - Brad Pitt and Marion Cotillard are the powercouple tasked with assassinating a Nazi while turning in high-power performances through layers of CG touch-ups. Max (Pitt), a Canadian working for the British espionage apparatus during World War II, is paired with Marianne, a sultry French resistance agent on an assignment in Casablanca. © 2017 King Features Synd., Inc.

Super Crossword

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) The adventurous Aries won't be disappointed with taking on a new challenge, despite some initial misgivings. Look for this move to open other opportunities down the line. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Let that beautiful Bovine smile not only put you at ease, but also show that you're ready, willing and more than able to confound the naysayers around you. A new admirer has important news. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Be careful how you handle a relationship that you're hoping to save. You already have the facts on your side. Avoid weakening your position by embellishing it with unnecessary dramatics. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Taking definitive stands isn't easy for the often-wavering Moon Child. But you not only need to stay with your decision, but also reassure others it was the right thing to do. LEO (July 23 to August 22) As a proud Lion, you're right to be upset about those who might be lying about you to others. But the best revenge is proving them wrong by succeeding at what you set out to do. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Caution is still advised before making a financial commitment to a "promising" project. Look for the facts behind

the fluff. Devote the weekend to loved ones. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A Taurus offers comfort and advice as you deal with an upsetting event. Use this as a learning experience that will help you avoid similar problems in the future. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A romantic situation creates some chaos for single Scorpions. But it's well worth the effort to work things out. A trusted friend can offer some helpful advice. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Expect to make new friends as your social circle expands. Also, remember to tell that family member how proud you are of his or her achievements. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) New ventures continue to be favored. And with your self-confidence rising all the time, you'll want to see how well you can do with a new challenge. So, go to it. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) This is a good time for the usually "serious-minded" Aquarian to let loose and enjoy some fun times. Expect to get good news about a workplace issue. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Changed plans might upset some people, but your needs should be respected. Offer explanations when necessary. But don't let yourself be talked into changing your decisions.

tourism, and keeps the visitors coming," said current Kernville Chamber of Commerce president Cheryl Borthick. An 1858 gold rush led to the formation of a town briefly called Rogersville, and then Williamsburg, which was soon renamed Whiskey Flat after a bar opened when pioneer Adam Hamilton pitched a tent, threw a board across two whiskey barrels and opened a saloon he called Whiskey Flat -and a town was born. Hamilton later became its first city clerk. In 1864, the growing town was later renamed Kernville to the less wild and woolly more suitable family name by the towns people. A more fitting name not associated with "demon rum," as

The addition almost doubled the interior exhibit area. In 2005, the Society built an outside venue for meetings and of course the popular summer time evening showing of movies filmed in the Kern River Valley. This structure became known as the Pack Station. In 2010, the Pack Station was expanded to provide ample shade cover from the hot afternoon sun.

the ladies of the town called it. There were glory days for Kernville, years of Wild West shootouts and, later, the celluloid type on Movie Street. The setting served as an Old West movie set and as a backdrop for such films as 1939's "Stagecoach," starring John Wayne. As a result of the Isabella Dam project in 1948, Kernville was moved upstream to its present location at the tip of the northeast fork of the man-made lake. So several of the old houses and other buildings were moved to vacant land that would become new Kernville -- joining about 500 residents -before 1953, when the old town was flooded by new dam. Today the town has since continued to maintain its gold rush and old west roots with

Whiskey Flat Days as an annual celebration of the historic Wild West days of the area so people could enjoy the full Western mountain experience and remember the Gold Rush times. The people of Kernville put on their Western duds and prepare to greet the thousands of visitors who come to join in the celebration that commemorates the 1860-64 days of People come from all over to see the Whiskey Flat Days Parade and the shoot’em-up shows, take part in the many contests such as the oldtime costume contest or the frog jumpin’ contests, partake of the carnival rides, enjoy the shenanigans of the Honorary Whiskey Flat Mayor contest, eat great food, or just walk around and enjoy the clean mountain air in a nice friendly town.

In 2014, a lot across the street from the Museum was donated to the Historical Society to house the holdings of the Ardis and Gayle Walker House. The purpose of the facility is to make the contents more accessible to the public for research and to provide room for educational seminars. The Historical Society completed the construction of the new 'Annex' in October 2016. The interior furnishings are almost completed. The Historical Society expects to open the Annex in the spring 2017. The Historical Society Board is refocusing their energies toward events

and educational opportunities. The Historical Society expects to soon announce the 50th Year Kern Valley Historical Society Anniversary Celebration, field trips, monthly programs and a series of interesting educational classes. With sustained community support and thousands of volunteers over the last 50 years the Historical Society has achieved wonderful results in preserving the history of the Kern Valley and created a Museum for which they are justifiably proud. Come by and visit. The Museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday through Sunday.

KCFD adds life-saving medication to Fire Engines Drug overdose deaths, driven largely by prescription drug overdoses, are now the leading cause of injury death in the United States--surpassing motor vehicle crashes, according to the FDA. In order to provide an even higher level of emergency medical care to our our communities, the Kern County Fire Department has added nasal naloxone, a life-saving medication that can stop or reverse the effects of an opioid overdose, to our fire engines. Opioids are a class of drugs that include prescription medications such a oxycodone, hydrocodone, and morphine, as well as the illegal drug heroin. If naloxone is given quickly, it can counter the overdose effects within minutes and restore adequate breathing. As always, the Kern County Fire Department is committed to serving our communities by protecting life, property and the environment through effective education, prevention, preparedness and emergency response.
