Who doesn't love the fun and functional ampersand? From jotting a shorthand "and" to branding corporate names, this curly, quirky little character is ubiquitously useful. It's also quite aesthetic, as you'll see at AmperArt.com, featuring "the ampersand as fun & fabulous art." To acknowledge and applaud this great little glyph, National Ampersand Day is observed annually on September 8th. Did you know that the ampersand used to be the last letter of the alphabet? That the ampersand is a ligature of "e" and "t"? That's "et" in Latin, meaning "and." That the word "ampersand" is a slurring of "real words" run together over time? That the plus sign is actually an ampersand? ■ Celebrate National Ampersand Day by having fun with the ampersand by using lots and lots of ampersands! ■ Substitute "&" for "and" in everything you write. Think of syllable replacements such as &roid, c&elabra, b&. ■ Send friends whose names contain "and" a special note - &y, &rea, Alex&er, Gr&ma. ■ Design new styles of ampersands. (Remember, the ampersand represents the letters "et.") ■ Use #AmpersandDay on social media.

Local blood goes to Texas - replacement blood needed Thanks to the donors Houchin Community Blood Bank has been able to provide an ample supply of blood products to the citizens of Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey. "We are fortunate to have the ready supplies available to send to Texas during this horrific natural disaster, and now we turn to Kern County residents to help us restock for local and national needs," said Greg Gallion, CEO of Houchin Community Blood Bank. The emergency needs in Texas are still unfolding and are expected to last for some time into the future. The communications we have received from representatives of the regions in Texas affected by Hurricane Harvey indicate that there is still a desperate need for type O negative blood in those areas. Many more platelet donations from all blood types are needed this week in order to have the platelet supplies readily available for our local patients and to support the national supply. To schedule an appointment please call 661-616-2505. The donor centers are located at 5901 Truxtun Avenue and 11515 Bolthouse Drive in Bakersfield. Hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Pastor Rick Warren Courier Inspiration We saw that David frequently complained of God's apparent absence. But the truth is, God hadn't really left David, just as God will never leave you. He has promised repeatedly, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." Yet God has not promised that you will always feel his presence. In fact, God admits that sometimes he hides his face from us (see Isaiah 45:15). There are times when he appears to be missing-in-action in your life. Floyd McClung describes it this way: "You wake up one morning and all your spiritual feelings are gone. You pray, but nothing happens. You rebuke the devil, but it doesn't change anything. You go through spiritual exercises . . . you have your friends pray for you . . . you confess every sin you can imagine, then go around asking forgiveness of everyone you know. You fast . . . still nothing. You begin to wonder how long this spiritual gloom might last. Days? Weeks? Months? Will it ever end? . . . It feels as if your prayers simply bounce off the ceiling. In utter desperation, you cry out, 'What's the matter with me?'" (Finding Friendship with God; Ann Arbor, MI: Vine Books, 1992; 186). The truth is, there's nothing wrong with you! This is a normal part of the testing and maturing of your friendship with God. Every Christian goes through it at

least once and usually several times. It is painful and disconcerting, but it is absolutely vital for the development of your faith. Knowing this gave Job hope when he could not feel God's presence in his life. He said, "I go east, but he is not there. I go west, but I cannot find him. I do not see him in the north, for he is hidden. I look to the south, but he is concealed. But he knows where I am going. And when he tests me, I will come out as pure as gold" (Job 23:8-10 NLT, second edition). When God seems distant, you may feel that he is angry with you or is disciplining you for some sin. In fact, sin does disconnect us from intimate fellowship with God. We grieve God's Spirit and quench our fellowship with him by disobedience, conflict with others, busyness, friendship with the world, and other sins (see Psalm 51; Ephesians 4:29-30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19; Jeremiah 2:32; 1 Corinthians 8:12; James 4:4). But often this feeling of abandonment or estrangement from God has nothing to do with sin. It is a test of faith, one we all must face: Will you continue to love, trust, obey, and worship God, even when you have no sense of his presence or visible evidence of his work in your life? The most common mistake Christians make in worship today is seeking an experience rather than seeking God. They look for a feeling, and if it happens, they conclude that they have worshipped.

When life is hard Ben Richey, Courier Columnist Life is full of difficulties. We all face trials and troubles of various kinds. Many of us have a host of regrets and disappointments that have bent and Richey shaped our lives. While we try to be strong, we keep giving in to the same temptations and falling back into the same messes repeatedly. You read a series of statements like that and you probably think, "Well, yeah, Captain Obvious, tell us something we don't already know." We're all acutely aware of life's problems and even when we're not currently experiencing them, each of us knows that in just a moment that could all change. We can get burdened down, even oppressed, by the fear of what's around the corner. I'm convinced this explains, to some degree, why so many in our culture are on anti-depressants and anxiety medications. We're a burdened people. When Jesus started his public ministry, He went to a place of worship in His hometown. Taking the scroll of Isaiah, he stood and read aloud, "The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor." When He finished, everyone stared in

expectation until he finally put resolution to their wondering- "Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing." While the present state of Christianity in America might lead one to believe the opposite sometimes, Jesus came to alleviate suffering and bring restoration. This was first and foremost about restoring lost people to a relationship with God, but everywhere Jesus went, there was an outbreak of wellness, an epidemic of healing. The blind saw, the sick became well, the lame walked again, the hungry were fed, and people came to faith and found spiritual restoration in droves! The practical message of Jesus' life was "God loves you and wants to restore you." He came to live in difficulty, embrace trials and troubles, and suffer a cruel fate in order to declare God's favor and loving intent to us. Let that sink in for a moment. Let that truth soak into all the difficult spaces of your life. In Hebrews 4:1516 it says, concerning Jesus, "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need." Life is indeed difficult at times and we get loaded down with burdens, but Jesus has grace and mercy for that. He has hope for that. He has restoration for that, if you'll only come to Him. Harry P. Thal Courier Columnist Being an educator must still be in my blood. This week I am heading to LA as a guest speaker for a conference of Medicare agents. While I am always Thal honored by such invitations, my motivation is not the kudos I receive when I do these programs, but the feeling that perhaps the world may be a little safer for the seniors served by these agents. There is a real problem within the health insurance industry. More and more health insurance agents are shifting their practice from the individual and family plan markets to the senior plans, as the IFP is experiencing fewer physicians accepting the insurance plans and several companies have even withdrawn from the IFP. Other insurance agents who had specialized in employer plans have seen drastic cuts in their commissions with ObamaCare, and are shifting their practice to the senior market. So, my 'giving back' to my industry of 35 years is to hopefully train agents so their clients will get safe and accurate information. Working with an older adult is very different than sitting with a corporate executive setting up a health plan for their employees and dependents or the Mom and Dad selecting a health plan, perhaps with financial assistance from Covered CA. My expectation is there will be about 200 agents at the general meet-

ing. I'm looking forward to presenting. Afterwards, typically I land up having lunch and answer questions prior to the next speaker. I also attend other lectures from other experienced instructors that I have worked with over the past decades. Then, I am leaving for San Diego County where there will be a meeting of agents from San Diego, Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino Counties for a similar educational experience. There is a four-day gap from the conclusion in Los Angeles and the beginning in Temecula. So, I have rented a suite in a hotel in San Clemente and have invited my 180 odd clients in South Orange County to an Open House meet and greet. I have never met many of these people and others were written well over twenty years ago when I lived in San Juan Capistrano. Their still being with me I guess is a testament to my belief that customer service is paramount in my professional practice. I look forward to seeing them. The closest thing I can do for a 'meet and greet' here locally is my "Medicare and a Movie" program at the Reel Cinema on October 4 beginning at 12:15. I do this annual event to educate my Kern Valley and treat those in attendance to refreshments as well as the current feature film following the program. Harry P. PICKS OF THE WEEK “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” (TV-MA) When Oprah gets involved in a TV movie (HBO), you know there's a great story to tell, and it is: the powerful and true story of Henrietta Lacks. A poor black woman, Lacks died in 1951 of cervical cancer, her tumor cells harvested posthumously without any family consent. The cells -- labeled HeLa -- turned out to be a prolific source of medical breakthroughs, although Lacks' family received neither recompense nor notoriety for this contribution. This injustice is investigated by writer Rebecca Skloot (Rose Byrne), and leads Skloot to Lacks' daughter Dale (Oprah). Together they embark on a journey to reveal HeLa as both a contributor to medical progress and a mother lost. Henrietta is portrayed in moving flashbacks by Renee Elise Goldsberry ("Hamilton"). “Rough Night” (R) - Take five friends from college (Scarlett Johansson, Kate McKinnon, Jillian Bell, Ilana Glazer and Zoe Kravitz), set them down in a glitzy, sin-filled locale (Miami), douse them in the stink of recklessness that results from a loaded event (bachelorette party) and ... you can see where this is going. CDFW is particularly interested in recruiting applicants with a love of the outdoors and a passion for fish and wildlife conservation. All prospective candidates are encouraged to extensively review materials on the LED website (wildlife.ca.gov/enforcement/career) before contacting CDFW with questions. If you are interested in becoming a Wildlife Officer Cadet, please apply online at https://jobs.ca.gov/JOBSGEN/7FG13.PDF by Sept. 30. CDFW wildlife officers are fully sworn California peace officers with a fundamental duty to serve and protect the public. They have the authority to enforce all California laws, including the Vehicle Code, Penal Code, Health and Safety drug laws and more. The primary mission of a wildlife officer is to enforce wildlife resource laws; to protect California waterways and habitat from destruction, pollution and litter; provide the public with hunting and fishing information; and to promote and coordinate hunter education and safe weapons handling. Wildlife officers patrol the moun-

tains, valleys, deserts, creeks, streams, rivers and ocean. They frequently work alone and cover both rural and urban areas. California's diverse ecosystem spans 159,000 square miles divided into 58 counties, with a human population in excess of 39 million. The state has 1,100 miles of coastline, 30,000 miles of rivers and streams, 4,800 lakes and reservoirs and 80 major rivers. Wildlife officers patrol utilizing trucks, ATVs, personal watercraft, boats, snowmobiles and airplanes, making contact with Californians in the great outdoors. Wildlife officers work undercover, conduct surveillances and complete indepth investigations, including writing and serving search warrants. CDFW LED has numerous specialized teams and assignments including K-9, wildlife trafficking, marijuana eradication, marine patrol and oil spill prevention and response. Annually, wildlife officers make contact with more than 295,000 people and issue more than 15,000 citations for violations of the law. Successful applicants for Warden Cadet will attend a Peace Officer Standards of Training (POST) certified law enforcement training academy, conducted by CDFW at Butte College, near Chico in northern California. Following the academy, probationary wildlife officers will work with a seasoned field training officer for several weeks, where they learn to apply their training in practical circumstances.

NOTICE OF TRUSTEES SALE NOTICE TO POTENTIAL BIDDERS: If you are considering bidding on this property lien, you should understand that there are risks involved in bidding at a trustee auction. You will be bidding on a lien, not on the property itself. Placing the highest bid at a trustee auction does not automatically entitle you to free and clear ownership of the property. You should also be aware that the lien being auctioned off may be a junior lien. If you are the highest bidder at the auction, you are or may be responsible for paying off all liens senior to the lien being auctioned off, before you can receive clear title to the property. You are encouraged to investigate the existence, priority, and size of outstanding liens that may exist on this property by contacting the county recorder's office or a title insurance company, either of which may charge you a fee for this information. If you consult either of these resources, you should be aware that the same lender may hold more than one mortgage or deed of trust on this property. NOTICE TO PROPERTY OWNER: The sale date shown on this notice of sale may be postponed one or more times by the mortgagee, beneficiary, trustee, or a court, pursuant to Section 2924g of the California Civil Code. The law requires that information about trustee sale postponements be made available to you and to the public, as a courtesy to those not present at the sale. If you wish to learn whether your sale date has been postponed, and, if applicable, the rescheduled time and date for the sale of this property, you may call (866)-960-8299 or visit this Internet Web site http://www.altisource.com/ MortgageServices/DefaultManagement/TrusteeServices.a spx using the file number assigned to this case 2017-00964CA. All right, title and interest conveyed to and now held by the Trustee in the hereinafter described property under and pursuant to a Deed of Trust described as: More fully described in said Deed of Trust. Street Address or other common designation of real property: 5812 Webb Way, Bakersfield, CA 93307, A.P.N.: 413053-05-00. The undersigned Trustee disclaims any liability for any incorrectness of the street address or other common designation, if any, shown above. The sale will be made, but without covenant or warranty, expressed or implied, regarding title, possession or encumbrances, to pay the remaining principal sum of the note(s) secured by the Deed of Trust. The total amount of the unpaid balance of the obligation secured by the property to be sold and reasonable estimated costs, expenses and advances at the time of the initial publication of the Notice of Sale is $272,255.70. Note: Because the Beneficiary reserves the right to bid less than the total debt owed, it is possible that at the time of sale the opening bid may be less than the total debt. If the Trustee is unable to convey title for any reason, the successful bidder's sole and exclusive remedy shall be the return of monies paid to the Trustee and the successful bidder shall have no further recourse. The beneficiary of the Deed of Trust has executed and delivered to the undersigned a written request to commence foreclosure and the undersigned caused a Notice of Default and Election to Sell to be recorded in the county where the real property is located. So, this year, the program will periodically showcase local professionals who will discuss how they use science and engineering, along with math, in their everyday jobs. Kern Valley Search and Rescue seeking sponsorships Kern Valley Search and rescue relies on the community to fund and maintain the rescue equipment needed to perform rescues on the Kern River and throughout the Kern River Valley. They look to local businesses annually to sponsor the unit with a donation to help meet the goal of providing the highest level of rescue readiness possible. KVSAR is a 501c3 non-profit organization and is composed entirely of volunteers. Any amount helps! With this year's donations they are working towards purchasing a Zodiac rescue boat for shallow water use, a monopod pulley system and life vests and helmets for team members. Donations are tax deductible and 100 percent of donations go to rescue equipment. Sponsorship levels that include an optional plaque are Gold $500, Silver $250 and Bronze $100.
