Betty Ann Diehl 1925-2010
In 2003, Betty Ann Diehl created an endowment with the Idaho Community Foundation (ICF) and designated Panhandle Alliance for Education as adviser to ICF on grant awards. She directed that projects support music and/or arts education in the Lake Pend Oreille School District. Betty Ann Diehl grew up in Sandpoint and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1943. She left the area with her husband, Stan, while he ran the family lumber company. They returned in 1972. Her gift is a lasting legacy to the students and teachers of the community she loved.

Engaging the community and local businesses in grants, education and teacher support is a winning combination for all. Marilyn Sabella, owner of Eve’s Leaves, used Bonner County Cut-Outs and said, “It is good for my business, and it is good for the students who learn from their fledgling business experience.” But most of all, she said: “I want to support what the Panhandle Alliance for Education is doing for our schools and our community. It is important work, and I have been here long enough to really appreciate what a big difference PAFE is making.”

We know the need for funding educational programs will continue long after our time here. To address this commitment, PAFE funds endowments with two established independent community foundations. These endowments are expected to become large enough to produce cash flow that future PAFE leaders can use to meet educational needs. Several Sandpoint area families who share our commitment to public education have funded family endowments naming PAFE as their distribution beneficiary. These families have created memorials to their family legacy while giving back to their community for generations to come.
