THE KENT EXPERIENCE

The Kent experience — learning, growing,

making friends — will change your life.

academics The academic program for every Kent student is individually tailored to match his or her aptitude and ability, assuring that all students are challenged, but not overwhelmed.

At Kent, our students’ academic needs come first. Our trimester schedule provides a tremendous range of options, and allows for a wide selection of electives each term. Our extensive curricular options range from courses in engineering, classical languages, and numerous electives in the sciences, theology, history, math, music, art, modern languages and English. Many of our courses are offered at three levels, from honors and accelerated to Advanced Placement options, all designed to meet students’ abilities and challenge them in their areas of strength. Kent is as nurturing as it is challenging. Our talented faculty are available during the academic day and study hours should our students require extra help. In addition to their classroom teachers, each student has an academic advisor who oversees all aspects of the student’s life at Kent. Advisors are true mentors who look out for the emotional, social, and intellectual well-being of their advisees. Our third form students and new fourth form students all take New Student Seminar (NSS) in the fall of their first year at Kent. The course is designed to help students evaluate their work habits, methods of organization, and time management so they can produce their best academic results at Kent and beyond. Our Academic Resource Center (ARC) is located in our Library and is open during the academic day and every night during study hours. Our ARC staff are available to assist any student who needs support in developing effective reading and note-taking skills and improving study strategies. Students can drop by without an appointment, or teachers and advisors may refer a student for required visits. By fully immersing themselves in Kent’s intellectual life, Kent students learn to challenge themselves, manage their time, and seek out support when needed.

applied learning Our Applied Learning Program allows our students to study engineering and business as a part of our curriculum, enhancing the traditional liberal arts model.

Kent is a pioneer among independent schools in establishing a program in engineering and offering a wide range of opportunities for exploring its many applications. Our engineering program was founded in 2007, and we opened our state-of-the-art Pre-Engineering and Applied Sciences Center in 2014. Our Pre-Engineering program is developed around our Pre-E certificate. Pursuit of Kent’s Pre-E certificate acquaints students with the practice and profession of engineering through coursework and extra-curricular activities such as FIRST and VEX robotics competitions, summer programs, guest lectures, and field trips. Graduates who have completed Kent’s engineering certificate have gone on to enroll at some of the top engineering and technology colleges and universities in the country, such as Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Virginia Polytechnic University, and Schools of Engineering at University of Michigan, Brown, Cornell, and Johns Hopkins. In our Pre-Business program, students can take courses in Global Finance, Economics, Capitalism, and Banking & Capital Markets. Activities available to students include clubs for investing and entrepreneurship. We also offer workshops in financial literacy and have a Bloomberg Terminal in our library. Upon completion of the Bloomberg course our students will become Bloomberg certified-- an impressive credential that they can highlight if applying for future jobs in finance. In the coming years, we will continue to add more courses and activities to our Pre-Business program, which will provide more opportunities to experience business in action.

The arts are a significant part of Kent’s academic program. In addition to Art Survey and Music Survey, Kent students can choose from a variety of art, music, and theater courses. Our students discover the depth of their talents while at Kent and try things they never thought possible, whether it’s taking a sculpture class, performing in the annual musical, learning to play the organ, or joining the Jazz Band. At Kent, you will surely find something that ignites your creative spirit. Kent’s flexible schedule allows our students the time to explore the arts throughout the course of their day. Private music lessons take place during students’ free periods, theater and dance take place in the afternoons, and music rehearsals take place in the early evenings. A Kent student can be an athlete and an artist without having to choose. It is our hope that our graduates leave Kent with a deeper appreciation for music, theater, dance, and visual art than they had before they arrived.

arts Our students have ready access to a vibrant and thriving arts program in which they can develop their existing talents or discover new ones.

our town Only a short walk to the center of town, we consider the town of Kent an extension of our campus. Students enjoy all that the town has to offer and appreciate this added opportunity to explore their independence.

“The heart of the New England leaf-peeping experience lies in the details: the farm stands and covered bridges, the waterfalls and antique stores that provide the eye candy, framed by the colors of our most glorious season. All of these things Kent has in abundance, in a perfect blend of uncommon natural beauty and culture that might shame cities 10 times its size. Yankee Magazine

During the school day, students can walk into town and enjoy a cup of hot chocolate, a sandwich, gelato, or a freshly baked muffin. The town of Kent is considered one of New England’s most popular destinations. Located two hours from NYC, our students frequently take advantage of this proximity. We run shuttles to the train station on the weekends, and teachers are able to take their students into the city for field trips.

Kent’s college counseling process is a natural extension of Kent’s educational philosophy- one which embraces the promise of each student. With five college counselors and a favorable student-counselor ratio, college counseling at Kent is student-centered and completely individualized. In the fall term of their V form year, students are enrolled in the College Seminar, a class designed to cover all dimensions of the application process. In addition to the College Seminar, there are numerous writing workshops and parent workshops offered each year. College representatives visit campus throughout the year to conduct information sessions and interviews. Throughout their Kent career, our students are encouraged to understand that successful college preparation depends on engaging fully in all that Kent has to offer, both in and out of the classroom.
