Michel ocelot's first foray into 3D animation. A hit at the Berlin Film Festival, the film extends the earlier shadow puppet style, with black silhouetted characters set off against exquisitely detailed Day-Glo backgrounds bursting with color and kaleidoscopic patterns – the subtle use of 3D creating a diorama-like effect. every night, a boy, a girl and an elderly technician meet in a closed, rather dilapidated old cinema. But the old picture palace harbors a secret. If truth be known, the cinema is a magical place where the three friends enjoy rummaging about, fantasizing, dressing up and playing parts in make-believe stories which, at night, become all too real for the three friends. For this is the time when sorcerers and elves take over in the auditorium, courageous stable hands long for beautiful princesses, werewolves howl and hardhearted ladies swish their heavy silk skirts. Here, there are cities of gold and forests that are so deep that nobody ever finds their way out again. This is a magical universe pervaded by waves of harmony, where heavenly choirs compete with the dull thud of magical drums. on nights such as these, malevolence can unleash great misfortune. But, in the end, good always triumphs. The film weaves together six exotic fables each unfolding in a unique locale, from Tibet, to medieval europe, an Aztec kingdom, the African plains, and even the Land of the Dead. In ocelot’s storytelling, history blends with fairytale as viewers are whisked off to enchanted lands full of dragons, werewolves, captive princesses, sorcerers, and enormous talking bees - and each fable ends with its own ironic twist. "Instantly Timeless! A Triumph!" - Variety "A Delight! This playful collection of fairytales has charm in spades!" - Time Out London

"Truly Thrilling! An utterly gorgeous and magical film!" - The Oregonian "Glorious! Michel ocelot's ravishing animation and magical storytelling is a delight from start to finish!" - Empire THe DIReCToR: Born in Villefranche-sur-mer on the Riviera in 1943, he spent his childhood in Guinea and his youth in Anjou on the Loire. Having worked at a puppet theatre as a teenager, he later studied at ecole régionale des beaux-arts in Angers, École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles. In 2007 he directed a video for Icelandic musician, Björk.
