José Ignacio Kempff Seleme

I am a licensed architect with great passion for computation, building technologies and sustaibable real estate. Well trained in major design softwares, focusing specifically on computational tools for the built environment at multiple scales; along with traditional art techniques and new media. I have experience in fast paced work environment and meeting deadlines, both due the education I received. I consider myself as a relisient person with creative problem solving and analysis skills, with permanent self-motivation, energy, assertiveness, and initiative. I have got strong communication and organizational skills. In 2015 started the Bachelor of Science in Foundations of Architecture at the Polytechnical University of Madrid (UPM). At the Madrid School of Architecture (ETSAM), I had the chance to learn from architects and professors with amazing careers and experiences, both in academia and practice. That is where I really fell in love with the built environment and understood that it was not only the buildings you see or live in but the way you approach the idea, project and conclusion, from theory to analysis in many scales. In Madrid, I have been elected as class delegate and I served in different classes’ councils representing the student’s voice in different areas of interest for the school. During my studies I experienced working in holidays in two studios in my hometown. Both Bolivian studios made me understood the Latinamerican reality when it comes to design. And later on, I have freelanced , developing construction details and plans, while complementing my education as an exchange student at the Technical University of Munich (TUM) with the Erasmus+ Program Scholarship. I graduated from the Master of Architecture at ETSAM within the Juan Herreros’ Chair, getting the Spanish and EU architectural licensure with an NAAB accreditation. I explore the boundaries of architecture and urbanism in the American and European context regarding history, theory and practice; identifying and analyzing their interrelationships and focus on computation design tools for the built environment at multiple scales, as both method and practice. After working at Ensamble Studio (Madrid), I started to collaborate with the Miautics’ team in the creation of digital instruments for the generation, execution, research, simulation and representation of design, architecture and urbanism.

super m .a .n. Location: Madrid Type: Master’s Thesis Professor: Víctor Navarro / Juan Herreros Year: 2022-2023 Description: The legacy of the museums of archeology as a type dates back to the 18th century, when kingdoms and empires were established. At a time when it is perceived that knowledge institutions are in crisis, the role of the National Archaeological Museum (M.A.N.) changes. For this, and with an anti-colonialist attitude, the museum expands its temporary exhibition spaces. Taking advantage of its location, it offers new programs that seek to mitigate the crisis that museums are experiencing today. The project refers to heritage and tries to have the least visual influence when people are near the museum, thus respecting the environment. While when the people are far away it is a claim, appearing and disappearing with special attention to the heights of Madrid. Current spaces are reorganized while more inclusive and diverse programs are accommodated. The museum programs are intuitively organized into separate platforms, intermediate planes and flowing boxes, which together dictate the distinctive faceted form of the project.

g las s ho us e Location: Madrid Type: Studio Project Professor: Juan Coll-Barreu Year: 2018 Description: Glasshouse models created to shelter different programs, such as performing arts or urban gardens. The original idea was set in the surroundings of Plaza España, in Madrid, specifically in the Debod Temple, Sabatini Gardens and the plaza itself. The intersecting ellipsoids are designed with a triangulated structure of glass and steel, making the installations more ephemeral and temporary.

Year: 2022 Description: The project proposes the construction of a new pavilion at the Venice Biennale that brings together Spain and Portugal and three buildings for different programs of the Italo-Iberian Foundation. These programs are an administrative and teaching area with classrooms, offices and a store; a library area, conference room and other exhibition spaces; and a residential area for fellows and researchers, which has a cafeteria and common spaces. With a clear structure, the project creates, on an urban scale, new public squares. The project opens the back street to the southwest in order to connect it with the entrance to the Biennale giving greater visibility, while the new pavilion is located in the current place of the Spanish Pavilion, connected to the foundation.

chernikhov Type: Architectural Analysis Core Studio Professor: Juan Bordes Year: 2018 Description: This case study was one of the many utopian drawings of Yakov Chernikhov. The assignment was to analyze it, representing a 3D model out of the simple perspective, taking special care of the details. It is a work of architecture analysis and composition.

casas vivas Type: Green Technologies Research Professor: Ferdinand Ludwig Team: José Ignacio Kempff Seleme, Claudia Borra Guilmain, Antoine Lafaye, Ángel González Corbí, Fátima Amador Granados, and Blanca Gomez-Millan Ruiz Year: 2021 Description: Casas Vivas de Árboles is a long-standing project developed by Alberto Polkonsnik and his wife Loly. The project is about conceiving buildings that are supported mainly by trees. These buildings are located in a village called Puente del Agua, near Mendoza. The lands they own are prairies between the mountain range of the Andes, in western Argentina. In this line, the buildings to be analyzed in this research are four out of many others. These buildings were elected because they are the most representative of the project and they are different between each other. The building process will be shown as well as the present situation. The speculation of future part has two alternatives, one utopian and the other dystopian. Following this, three computer-generated drawings for each building will be shown: two axonometric views and one elevation. These drawings represent the current situation of the living architecture projects that are the most emblematic but at the same time show the diversity of Alberto Polkonsnik‘s works.

mnau Location: Madrid Type: Studio Project Professor: Gonzalo Moure Year: 2021 Description: The project reshape the existing Museo del Traje in Madrid and creates the National Museum of Architecture and Urbanism. The proposal is about creating a new volume following the existing rhythm and modulation. The programs are completed in the tower and basement, extending the exhibition spaces. In addition, a new garden to the north is presented, which plays with the original organic garden to the south and east. The central stairs were removed and vegetation was introduced in order to create new patios. New public bridges solve the visibility in the basement. In a urban scale the new Art’s Quarter was put together with more green spaces, creating gardens and reaching a new urban layout.

uru-uru Location: Chipaya Type: Studio Project Professor(s): Victoria Acebo / Paula Montoya Year: 2019 Description: This project is about creating a church-like cult center for the Uru-Chipaya community near Oruro, Bolivia, where the millenary civilization currently lives. The proposal is about a brick elliptical base where a Iglesia + Centro de Culto metallic cross passage is put inside. The exterior is covered by a truss-roof covered with totora, an originary plant that grows near the Poopo lake. GROUND FLOOR PLAN ROOF PLAN

vertical village Location: Munich Type: Studio Project Professor(s): Francis Kéré / Inês Dantas / Barbara Schudock Year: 2021 Team: José Ignacio Kempff Seleme and Hui-Chuan Weng Description: We proposed to pile houses with gardens to form a vertical village, where the residents can find open-air spaces and independence. These will be organized in three main volumes, which have 7, 8 and 9 floors of height, and are connected by platforms. We presented also different programs, like a community center, cafeteria, day-care and gym. These programs are intended to be used in case of a future and more drastic lockdown, so the people living in our proposal will have a place to meet, pick up food, practice sport, and even where to leave the infants. This is what makes a social and cohesive community. For the urban program, we proposed a connection between the abandoned railways, making them a green space for the neighborhood. This connection is made with stairs and small buildings that encompass other initiatives in the first two floors, while on the third floor residents can find a co-working space with views to the new green space and to the plaza. This plaza, surrounded by the neighborhood buildings, has a direct connection to the playground in front.
