You are Never Too Old to Buy a Peruvian Horse By Laurie Hardingham Don Alfredo died in the fall 2013, and his owner, Joyce Brown, at the age of 78, decided that he was her last horse. Joyce says, “We didn’t own horses at all until we were 55. I guess it was a retirement project for Frank “ who was her husband. Joyce had owned 4 peruvians, showed 2 of them, and her friend John McMillan had a horse, Gata, that she could ride. Gata and Joyce spent a summer showing, then Gata went lame and had to be retired. So that was that. Joyce would retire from riding, and looked forward to celebrating her 80 as an onlooker. th

In May 2015, Joyce went horseless to the BC Peruvian Horse Association clinic. Watching other Peruvian owners riding and learning, she was heartbroken. She wanted to be out there with them. So the search for a new Peruvian Horse began. Joyce wanted a gelding, one that was gentle, easy to mount and one she would be able to ride in shows. Tall order in the spring of 2015! Joyce and her friend, Laurie, got online and on the phone, and located a gelding in Alberta. They went down to meet him, but he was big for a Peruvian, and not a “fit” for Joyce. Laurie eyed a little mare in the pasture, and asked Grant McKinney, the owner/trainer, about her. In no time Grant had her saddled up and Laurie was riding her, grinning from ear to ear. Joyce couldn’t contain herself: “ Let me try that horse.” She’s pretty fresh, said Grant, but soon Joyce was riding her and also grinning from ear to ear! VRR Nobleza had just turned 6, and hadn’t been ridden much for the past year, but Joyce and the little mare clicked. Grant agreed to work with her for two weeks, and the deal was done! Laurie picked her up, and delivered her to

Joyce in Armstrong BC two weeks later. That was the weekend of Joyce’s 80 birthday. The perfect birthday gift!!!!!

th

Nobleza has got brio, is very responsive, stands still for mounting, and has a smooth gait. Two weeks later, she and Joyce were riding in the BC All Gaited Show in Armstrong, and made the trip back to Alberta in Mid-July for the Wild West Classic. There Nobleza proved to be a bit green, but won four ribbons, and Joyce was back in action! Now she has the challenge of riding a new horse. “Everything is different, she’s never been in shows before, hardly been out on trails, and was a bit spooky. I had to learn to ride all over again. Freddy spoiled me, and this is a new experience, but its fun. I love the horses, I love the people, and I love winning ribbons!” Joyce is looking forward to the “challenge of doing my best, and many more years of riding”, as she prepares for the Canadian National Show in August. Lucho Dapelo, the judge, gifts Joyce Flowers after the Wild West Show

(Note: Joyce would like to thank her friends, John McMillan and Laurie Hardingham for their help in making this adventure possible. And of course, Grant McKinney, trainer extraordinaire! Not to forget a big THANK YOU to VRR Nobleza, the little Peruvian whose heart and spirit propelled Joyce into her 80’s, still riding and loving every minute of it!)

Embrace winter – Get Prepared! Let’s face it, it’s hard to get our minds around the thought we need to begin winter preparations while enjoying cold beverages on a warm summer evening...but every year winter surprises us, almost like we’ve never endured it before. Prepare now and laugh at your neighbors later. Here are some suggestions to get you going. 1. Hay. Locate, buy and store your feed in a clean, dry and convenient location. Easy access is key. Horses require 2 and a bit percent of their body weight in hay or forage per day. That means a 1,000-pound horse requires 600 to 650 pounds of feed per month and possibly more during the cold snaps. Multiply that out for the number of horses to get the quantity you require. It’s a good idea to buy 20% more than you estimate in case next year is a poor growing season. Working horses, broodmares, yearlings will all require additional feed.

2. Water. Having a source of water available 24/7 is important for your horse’s well-being. Whatever type of watering option you use, make sure it works and is clean. This is always easier in the summer. Boxing and insulating the sides and part of the top will reduce power consumption and evaporation. If you find your auto waterers were freezing in the past, plug a lightbulb socket with 60watt bulb in the electrical plug located inside the waterer. Heat tape also works great on a timer.

3. Bedding. If your horse spends time in a stall, clean, dry and dust-free bedding is important, and always cheaper in the summer. There are many options but keep in mind your horse’s health and comfort is influenced by the quality of bedding used in their stall.

4. Machinery. Check you batteries, fluids, tires or tracks, and inspect for leaks; an easy fix in the summer is often an uphill battle in the winter. Nobody likes fixing things with clumsy winter gloves on.

5. Pasture. Winterizing your pasture keeps it healthy and ready for next spring. Just before the snow flies, drag a pallet or harrow to break up the manure. For smaller pastures it’s wise to remove the manure to reduce the amount of parasites that will hatch in Spring. 6. Emergency Preparedness. Assemble a winter kit with the flashlights, additional batteries, equine first aid kit, and head-lamps to use during power outages or working in a pasture. 7. Clothing. Get out the torques, mitts, gloves and jackets in advance and have at the ready…if you live in Alberta you know it can go from summer to winter in snap. 8. Winter can be a terrific time of year if you are prepared. Embrace it, don’t hide from it!

INTRODUCING OUR 2015 PHAC JUDGE: THE HONORABLE GEORGE BENDEZU

George was born in Peru and from 1965 he was raised by one of the most famous Breeders of the Peruvian Paso horse, Jose Risso Matellini. Sr.Jose Risso was instrumental in George’s education & knowledge of the Peruvian Paso from the Breeding to judging of this special horse. He was very thankful that through Sr.Jose Risso he had many opportunities to learn from Carlo Parodi Cuya, Frito Matellini, Fernando Grana, Jose Musante Hurtado and Alfredo Ellias Vargas. But first and foremost he is grateful to Jose Risso Matellini for the knowledge and breeding of the Peruvian Paso. George came to the United States in the 1980’s and started his showing & Training business with the Peruvian Paso for over 35 years in South & Central America as well as the United States. He has had many Champion, and, Champion of Champions to his credit. George is a successful trainer because of his famous mentors, two great Maestros from their time, Maestros Pedro Torres & Maestro Alfredo Leon. As a breeder of Peruvian Paso’s for over 30 years George has accomplished a wonderful breeding program with just two mares. George is a certified judge and holds cards for all three Associations, NAPHA, PPHRNA and AAOBPPHA. He is a Professional Horse trainer and Breeder of the Peruvian Paso as well with the all gaiting breeds of horses. In the years past George has advised successful Breeders in the United States, to name a few Vievenne Lundquist of Meadow Springs Ranch, Xandu Farms as well as Breeders in Guatemala and San Salvador

PHAC Class Procedures and Call of the Classes Purpose: To standardize the ring procedure and ensure that classes are run in a predictable manner, with all required elements presented to the judge prior to class cuts, yet maintain an efficient flow to keep shows within their schedules.

Procedure for Halter Classes : Each horse shall enter the ring in his best gait and shall remain in that gait until the Judge requests that the horse stop and line up. Each horse will be worked sufficiently as directed by the Judge in order to properly evaluate the gait. Horses will be worked in both directions of the ring and when requested to reverse, it is preferred that the handler change position to the inside. Position of the handler should be approximately even with the horse's withers and on the left hand side. Handlers may change sides during the individual workouts. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for a workout must be shown as requested by the Judge. Actions that may disturb other entries (such as lunging circles when asked to line-up, or stopping intentionally) shall be forbidden.

Procedure for Breeding Classes : Class Procedure: All horses will enter the arena at their best gait and will remain working until asked to line up by the ring steward. Horses will be shown in each horse's best gait both directions of the ring and otherwise as requested by the Judge. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for a workout must be shown as requested by the Judge. The speed at which the horses are shown will be at the discretion of and completely under control of the Judge. The Judge may request different speeds of an individual horse or group to test the horse's thread, but excessive speed will not be required. Horses must be ridden throughout the entire class by only one and the same person unless the Judge, himself, wishes to ride one of the entries.

Procedure for Gait Classes: Class Procedure: Horses shall enter at the best gait and remain working on the rail. Horses will work both directions of the arena at best gait and will be asked to walk. Judge may wish to see horses slower or may ask them to extend their gait, work side by side, or may call the horses to line-up and proceed with individual workouts. Smooth transitions are desirable as is a range of correct gait, however excessive speed is not required. Occasionally the Judge may wish to see the width of the thread (variation of speed in which a horse maintains a pure gait) of a particular horse. However, the horse which can move the fastest is not necessarily the better-gaited horse. If another horse has a finer gait or if another horse has better movement, this may count for more in the final judging. Horses must be ridden throughout the entire class by only one and the same person unless the Judge, himself, wishes to ride one of the entries.

Procedure for Pleasure Division: All horses shall enter the ring at their best gait and continue on the rail. To be shown at the horse's best gait and at a walk in both directions of the ring and otherwise as requested by the Judge. The ideal Peruvian Pleasure Horse will be one that would be a smooth, efficient mount to take the rider on long rides. He should work effortlessly with a noticeable “bow in the rein indicating very light rein cues. Leg aids will be subtle and responses will be appropriate to a horse that is a pleasure to ride. The following maneuvers on the rail in both directions shall be mandatory in Pleasure Classes prior to line-up and prior to a class cut being made. 1. Do complete small circles 2. Stop and stand quietly 3. Back up a minimum of five steps 4. Walk on loose rein 5. Reversal of directions on the rail (done to the inside) 6. Do serpentines through objects placed in an straight line Pleasure - Optional maneuvers (on rail or individually) 7. Do figure 8’s Diameter for the circles and spacing for the serpentines will be approximately 3 to 4 metres (10 to 15 feet) using safe and stable obstacles set in an approximately straight line. All maneuvers should be performed with precision. The horse should remain relaxed, and nervousness will be penalized. Mandatory maneuvers must be performed in both directions. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for workouts must be shown as requested by the Judge.

Performance Division: All horses shall enter the ring at their best gait and continue on the rail. The following maneuvers shall be mandatory in Performance Classes in order to demonstrate tractability and good manners. An ideal Performance Horse will perform

with energy and precision. A more energetic attitude than in a Pleasure class is acceptable but the horse will be awaiting cues from his rider. A horse taking his own initiative or showing rebellion or resistance to the rider’s commands should not place over a horse working quietly and correctly. Mandatory on rail prior to any class cut: 1. Walk on loose rein 2. Stop and stand quietly 3. Back a minimum of five steps 4. Do complete small circles (to inside unless requested by judge toward rail) 5. Do reversals of directions on the rail (done to inside unless requested by judge toward rail) 6. Do serpentines through objects that are offset or curved configuration 7. Figure 8’s 8. Side pass 9. Stop, turn on the haunches 180 degrees Performance Optional maneuvers (on rail or individually) 9. Spirals (caracol) 10. Back 10 – 15 steps 11. Turn on the forehand Diameter for the circles and spacing for the serpentines will be approximately 3 to 4 metres (10 to 15 feet) using safe and stable obstacles offset approx. 2 – 3 ft. Mandatory maneuvers must be performed in both directions. Individual workouts may be called for any and all places by the Judge. All horses chosen for workouts must be shown as requested by the Judge

The Smoothest Saddle Horse in the World By A.N.C.P.C.P.P.

The Peruvian Paso Horse is a breed close to five hundred years old developed from the horses that arrived with the Conquest. Its racial ancestors, combined with the geography and nature of its habitat, resulted in a travelers’ horse characteristics. This breed is unequaled because of its comfort to the rider; its intense, yet noble temperament, its arrogance, and unique passive equitation.

Origin The first horses to reach America with Christopher Columbus on his second expedition were the forebears of the Peruvian Horse. The Royal Decree of May 23rd ,1493 certifies that King Ferdinand of Spain and Queen Isabel ordered for 20 mounted lancers to be included in the second expedition. In the course of time, breeding stables were set up along the Caribbean Islands and Central America from where Francisco Pizarro and his company in arms acquired their horses for the Conquest of Peru. These all had their origin in Spain where the horses carried Spanish, Friesian and Berber blood in their veins. The Spanish provided its elegant bearing, the Friesian, its propensity to a mid-size conformation and its front leg action, the Berber, its inclination to the ambling gait that was to determine the characteristics of the Peruvian Paso Horse Since their arrival to Peru in 1532, horses went through a natural process of selection an adaptation to the environment, increasing their endurance as they had to travel long distances across new and rugged surroundings, the ambling gait and the gentleness in the saddle inherited from their forebears was the functional excellence required and preserved once fixed as a racial characteristics. With the passing of time, this strong horse, of light pace and comfortable displacement, became the main means for traveling in Peru, later on to be used in agricultural activities, city transport and diverse public celebrations.

While other nations in America were crossing breeds to develop horses adequate to specific activities, the breeders of the Peruvian Paso Horse were improving the breed through a process of selection. The long distances covered on horseback by travelers, muleteers (driver of mules), landowners, the military and outlaws across endless deserts and small valleys of the coast and regions in the altitudes of our Andes, contributed to the molding of the Peruvian horse. Later on, with the arrival of roads and automobiles, the use of horses as a means of transport declined, with farms and haciendas becoming a refuge for the breed, where it was preserved for agricultural activities and considered irreplaceable.

Racial Characteristics The Peruvian Paso Horse is an equine breed unique to Peru; of mid-size morphological conformation and Berber (equus caballus Africanus, with origin in northern Africa) features, of which the most striking is its head profile, sub-convex or straight, with slanting eyes, and thick mane; not very pronounced withers, “sloping” rump and low tail-set. To stand it must do so with the forelimbs slightly pulled in and the hind legs below the body mass due to the angulation of its hocks. The Peruvian Paso Horse ranges between 1.43-1.51 mts. in height and weighs between 400 and 500 kgs. Practically all colors are found.

Pisos The word “Pisos”, when referring to the Peruvian Paso Horse, is a Peruvian term describing the different “airs” derived from the ambling gait. Peruvian horses are born with Paso; an inherited and natural racial trait preserved from the time they first reached Peru, almost 500 years ago. The Piso is the disengaged pace in four beats in which the sequence of motion of the limbs is: first, the hind leg, then the foreleg of the same side; third, the hind leg of the opposite side, then the foreleg of the same side. The gait, performed in this manner, is referred to as “Paso Llano” in its most widespread rhythm with a variation of other denominations depending on the tempo, bracing and elevation of limbs on the ground.

Unlike trotting breeds, the Paso horse permanently braces the ground. Its center of gravity has hardly any upward thrust. It has a smooth horizontal swing, making it both comfortable and pleasant for the rider. The smoothness therefore being one of the more notable virtues of the breed, following with the advance, which means that the hoof print of the hind leg caps of passes the hoof print left by the foreleg. The virtues of the Peruvian Paso Horse are complemented by its elegance and arrogance in performing its natural airs with an elegant swinging of the forelegs which, while rising turns outwards to land squarely on the ground; adornos known as “agudez” (lift), “término” and “extension” respectively. Diffusion of the Peruvian Horse around the world Our exceptional equine breed has been exported to diverse countries around the world since the 19th century. The United States and Canada in North America; all Central American countries, including Panama; and, in South America, mainly Ecuador, Argentina and Bolivia. In Europe, these horses are raised in Germany, Switzerland, France and Spain. Peruvian Paso Horses are also bred in Australia and Japan. The Asociación Nacional de Criadores y Propietarios de Caballos de Peruanos de Paso (National Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horse) The afición for the Paso Horse led Peruvians to hold show son major festivities and later on, beginning the 20th century, prize-awarding shows. In 1947, a group of breeders founded the Asociación Nacional de Criadores y Propietarios de Caballos Peruanos de Paso A.N.C.P.C.P.P. (National Association of Owners and Breeders of Peruvian Paso Horse) which, by appointment of the Central Government, is responsible for keeping the Genealogical Registry of the breed; arranging and supervising the selection, breeding and genetic improvement as well as promoting the breed by way of organizing shows and competitions. Every year in April, the A.N.C.P.C.P.P. holds the National Show that gathers breeders from all over Peru and diverse parts of the world. After more than 50 years of prolific institutional work, the breed has gained in beauty, elegance, quality of Piso and smoothness while maintaining its energy and brio. The future of this singular and extraordinary breed native to Peru and a symbol of national pride and creole tradition, a living legacy of peruanidad, is secured on account of its usefulness, smoothness and elegance, and the support of an ever increasing afición that is Passed down from father to son. Our show grounds are located in Mamacona, at the foot of the Pachacamac archaeological site (km. 26 of the old South Pan American highway). Our installations can hold receptions of up to 500 persons including a bar, kitchen and restroom facilities. We also count with a small colonial-style chapel; parking space for vehicles and

lots of open green areas. Additionally we have ample show grounds, with their electric illumination and capacity to hold up to approximately 4,000 spectators.

The Training The training of the Peruvian Paso Horse is called the enfrenadura. It differs from the traditional methods used with other breeds and their schools of equitation insomuch that the horse is familiarized in the use of the bridle in the use of the muzzle, which, acting over the hackamore, results in docile horses responsive to the bridle. Another particular feature of this training method is that our horses turn with their forelegs and displace the rump. The National Riding Gear The riding gear of the Peruvian Paso Horse is very typical, traditional and made by artisans. This singular handcraft is highly appreciated overseas. In its making, the skills of saddlers, carpenters, braiders, engravers, silversmiths and pellón (saddle blanket) makers are all combined. The sampedrano pellón is made of twisted strands of dyed lamb’s wool and serves as a cover for the saddle, making long journeys more comfortable for the rider. The riding gear consists of the jato (halter headstall and chain), blinkers (tapaojo) and reins made of un-tanned hand-plaited leather and the saddle, which is of engraved or carved leather; stirrups, that are made of wood; underleathers and trappings. The Outfit of the Chalán Rider Consists of hat, white neckerchief, shirt, and white pants, boots or half boots and spurs (made either of silver, nickel or stainless steel). Finally, the poncho, in a wide range of colors, which is made of linen, cotton, and alpaca or vicuña wool.

No horse experience necessary My time with Jocelyn and her herd of horses was truly profound. Jocelyn’s firm, yet compassionate and encouraging manner and the beautiful space she held for the experience to unfold was perfect. Her experience and the close relationship she has with her horses helped to create a safe and loving space. This was a special experience and I look forward to future sessions with Jocelyn and her herd. – JK I learned so much from my experience with you, Colorado and my man Ricky! I’ve made many changes, taken numerous strides outside of my box and feel I am a better person for doing so. – CO Jocelyn is a certified life and executive coach, and is also certified in the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method ®. The Peruvian Paso Longevity Project Mission Statement: To provide a reference document listing Peruvian Paso Horses that lived 20 Years or More The Peruvian Paso Longevity Project is compiling a list of registered (in any registry worldwide) Peruvian Pasos that lived 25 or more years. Since few breeders advise registries when horses die, there is no such reference document in the Peruvian breed. This project will post that information on an Internet website available to all free of charge--a sort of celebration of longevity in the Peruvian breed. Verne R. Albright and Mimi Busk Downey are organizing this project, which is not affiliated with any organization because they hope to have contributions from Peruvian Paso aficionados around the world. Information is now being gathered through a third-party survey. Those interested in contributing names of horses 20 years of age or more can enter the following survey link on the internet. That will open a form that can be filled out by computer, making it easy to provide information. Anyone interested is requested to kindly fill out this form with as many names as possible and submit it. To enter additional horses, enter the survey link in your browser again and you will get another form. There is no limit to the number of horses one person can submit. Names and data can be contributed by anyone--not necessarily the horse owner. The horses can be deceased or living. After only three weeks the survey has received 256 responses listing 535 horses. Please help us make a list that will enhance our breed's reputation and call attention to the many many Peruvian horses that take their riders for happy trails into old age. October 9-11, 2015

Hello Peruvian Horse Aficionados. from Jean Thom In 1999 I bought two Peruvian horses, they were both 2 year olds, one was a black gelding that was not the biggest horse in the world but he grew up and became a good sized horse with a great personalty. At that time my other half Jim Hegan was still guiding but I was generous and let him do the training on Don Jefe.I chose to work with the mare, Evita. My grandfather who was the blacksmith at Fort Steele,BC also did a lot of tanning of hides and braided many quirts, bosals and numerous other horse equipment, one of which was a bosal that he made for me.I had it forever and then getting the Peruvians my Jimmy took it apart and made a temporary Peruvian bosal with it, so rather than it being tucked away we were now able to use it on Jefe. I bought one from Donna for Evita and we were ready to start training our two Peruvian horses. I had been involved with barrel racing, team roping, goat tying, and a lot of years of range riding, (now there are some stories to tell) I was pretty handy with a rope too, so back to the Peruvians, I honestly did not know how to use all the tack properly and so we winged it, for sure I didn’t know I was supposed to use that big piece of leather(corona) over the saddle blanket..strangest riding equipment I ever dealt with, so as time when on Jefe learnt to carry pack boxes with noisy things in them, was a good training technique as he learnt to accept any kind of “thingamajigs” with no problem, ole Jim, he sure thought that those Peruvian horses were the greatest ever, they would gait smoothly along and he sure remembered the many mountain horses he rode that definitely didn’t give him that “good” a ride. So in the end, learned how to tack the Peruvian horse properly, using all the spare pieces. Jefe went to a wonderful home in Olds, AB., where he still lives, Blaza and I went to visit him a few years back. Evita went to Williams Lake where I am pretty sure she is also still with her people and Olt Jim, well, he no longer has to go out in the cold rainy, snowy conditions or put up with the heat and bugs any more, he lives where it is air conditioned for the summer, and nice and warm for the winter, he has a lot of ladies looking after him all day long. I am sure that it can’t get better than that, for the time being anyways.

Now I just want to say a few more words about the “Jefet” horse as Jim called him. His sire is still looking as good as he did when I first saw him in 2000.Don Vito is now owned by Wendy Barteluck. He went to live with them when he was 13 yrs. Old.

This is a short story that Wendy is sharing with us. By the time he was 16 Wendy says they were having a great time on the trails. He has always been very keen to learn, he is very confident, which is a real asset for the trail horse. Over the years he learned to cross ditches and puddles, walk through grass several feet taller than him, cross bridges, wade through lakes, ignore bears, moose, deer and 20 years old grouse & navigate dense bush. He learned to side-pass expertly & can side –pass down a pole and understand how each gate opens and his role in making it happen. He grasped in minutes that he needed to keep his eye on the ball when playing Polo with a Pilate’s ball. He has gone with us on many camping

trips including the Alexander Mackenzie Heritage Trail, The Willmore Wilderness Park and also Empire Valley in the Churn Creek Protected Area. Arthritis, caused by an injury has now become more serious. Don Vito is a highly intelligent character. He is loving, & loves playing tricks; he makes us work at staying ahead of him. We expect that Don Vito will still be able to enjoy the trails in the coming year on a gentler level. I will miss my terrific trail companion. Don is such a special guy, we feel blessed to have had him in our lives, thank you for giving us the opportunity to brag about him PCR Don Vito: March 23, 1991 - 715- Sire: AV Sol De Paijan; Dam Joya De Las Cascadas Breeder: Poso Creek Ranch, Calif. Dorothy Owens (Buck Owens sister) was part owner. Another short note from Donna Calver former owner of Don Vito In his younger years Don Vito took part in many shows winning Best Bozal Horse in three separate shows in 1995.In '97 he was first in the stallions Gait Class at the Northwest Summer Classic and also in '97 he was Reserve Champion Breeding Stallion at the same show. He acquired many other first place ribbons over the years of showing. Thank you Wendy and Donna for the article

PCR Don Vito looking good at 22 years . don Vito is now 24 and apparently still going

strong. He hasn't been bothered by the arthritis as much as they thought he would be. Wendy was telling me she recently rode him through a field of bulls and he paid them no undue attention whereas Doug's horse went ballistic (not sure what that involves). Doug's horse is not Peruvian.. maybe quarter horse mix.

The Story of Cathie and Rosa

Well this story began in the Fall of 2004. I had been over to Ivan & Judie Bourelles Peruvian Paso farm having coffee & visiting. The next thing I know, I’m out in the pasture with 20+ horses and Ivan. After discussing the qualities of each youngster and taking into consideration what I THOUGHT I wanted to do with the horse eventually. He says” I think this little filly would be the one for you”. Her name was Olorosa IJB. When I hesitated and mentioned I may not be able to afford her, Ivan’s response was, “Tell you what, there is an old truck on your family farm. I’d be willing to trade straight across for her”. The rest, shall we say is history… “Rosa” and I have gone on to teach each other (sometimes under the watchful eye of Ivan), and grow in our partnership. Considering I knew nothing about training a horse, I thought what did I get myself into. We did not have the benefit of professional trainers, an arena or even just a flat area at home to work in. We did virtually all of our training on the trail. We have had our share of trials with training, as I have learned it takes twice as long to correct a mistake than it does not to make one in the first place, but there is no feeling as good as like being out there alone with your horse. We’ve also had some frustrating defeats and awesome triumphs along our journey. Although I must admit that throwing in the towel had crossed my mind on more than one occasion. Looking back, I truly believe all these challenges make you a better rider and a better team. Our very first Champion of Champion title was won in 2008 at the Canadian National Horse show. Throughout it all, Rosa & Cathie have gone on to win 20 Champion of Champion titles at various Regional and National Peruvian Horse shows, including the North American Peruvian Horse Association – USA Nationals in 2013 in Burbank, California where they won two Champion of champion titles. They have also attained 4 Laureada titles.

The most recent “Laureada” title came in the 2014 Canadian National Peruvian Horse show that took place at Heritage Park, in Chilliwack, BC. In 2010, Rosa gained the recognition of being the highest pointed horse in Canadian Peruvian horse history, in any one given year. She is also currently rated number 2 in Canadian Lifetime show points status through the Peruvian Horse Association of Canada. I’m very proud of my mare, and our achievements and want to encourage the “average jane” rider like me, that if you set your mind to it anything is possible. As for Ivan & Judie, when asked if they regret their decision to trade the horse. Their response is “Not on your life! We are very proud of their accomplishments together” PS the old truck….never did work.

Cathie and Rosa would like to invite you to come and share a celebratory beverage with them at the end of showing day on Saturday Aug. 29th.
