Defend Yourself!

July 13th, 2010 By: Rebecca Parra

A group of girls gathered outside in Field 1A with two Senseis to practice the art of self defense. They showed the girls how to properly kick and throw punches in case of an emergency. The most important rules to follow when trying to defend yourself are known as “The Three C’s”: stay calm, cool and collected. It is very, very important to breathe so that your muscles don’t tense up. Even in a moment of emergency, you must try to remember key details about your attacker. Things such as piercings, height, and hair color can be essential to find your attacker after you’ve contacted the police. That is the other thing that you must do; after you have been confronted, always go straight to the police! You don’t have to know karate either to be able to defend yourself. It only takes seven pounds of pressure to break a knee, so if possible, go for the knees. Let’s just hope that nothing ever happens to anyone who is here at GM, but if it does, they’ll be prepared!

100 Years of Guiding!

Yesterday at eleven o’clock many girls made their way to the field on the island to take part in a fencing session with the instructor, Julian Twortus, who has been playing the sport for six years now.

By: Emily MacDonald

Before getting geared up, the participants played a partner game where they had to attempt to tag each other while using the moves that were taught to them earlier. Following the pre-activity exercises, the group gathered the gear together and started playing some matches. Great fun was This fabulous sporting session started had by all and hopefully they all learned something off with exercise activities like skipping, heel clicks, jogging, taking giant steps, hop- new and exciting! ping on one foot and other various leg movements. After a quick drink of water they made a triangle (instead of a circle) and stretched their muscles. Both stretching and warming up are important prior to the sport session to prevent injuries. Next the instructor showed some of the moves in steps. Starting with the guard position, then using fencing footwork while staying in the same position. Soon they would start learning how to lunge and attack which, if successful in hitting the opponent, would gain them a point if they were playing a real match.
