Maternal Mortality is the mother’s death during pregnancy, at delivery, or within one year after delivery. During pregnancy, a womans body goes through a series of changes, so it is vital to identify problems or complications early. Black, American Indian, and Alaska Native (AIAN) women are at two to three times higher risk of pregnancy-related deaths than White women. At least 80% of deaths are preventable.

Although it is normal to feel overwhelmed and tired in the first few weeks after delivery, some symptoms may be signs of more serious problems.

Make an appointment with your healthcare provider if you have one or more of the following:

Weston loves to go on walks as a family. His favorite toy is Sophie the giraffe. Mom and Dad can get him smiling and giggling when we tell him how much we love him and that he has stinky feet. Weston has just started eating and his favorite food so far is sweet potatoes. He loves to finish the day with a warm bath and bottle.

If you are a parent, it is bound to happen at some point. In public, your child does or says something that makes your eyes widen, and you im mediately want to hide in embarrassment. For some, it may be walking past the wine aisle and your child announcing loudly, “Don’t you need some Mommy juice?” For me, one instance included a four-year-old and a four-letter word. To set the stage, you need to know that we had a wonderful but frustrating dog who loved to run out the door any chance she got. Avoid Making Assumptions

When was the last time you examined any assumptions you have made about your children? If you have not done this recently, follow the advice of Alan Alda, who said, “Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in.” Just as termites destroy homes, unquestioned assumptions destroy relationships.

As parents, we must stop making assumptions that imply meaning to behavior and complete false narratives. To stop the toxic practice of assuming, we must exercise our ability to see another person’s perspective and openly communicate even when something seems obvious. Empathy is the affective process that enables us to connect with how

negative emotion. In contrast, perspectivetaking is the cognitive process of correctly comprehending a circumstance through another person’s viewpoint. When adults make dangerous assumptions, it tends to be in perspective-taking.

Imagine all the assumptions you may make about the child in the corner crying. For example, you may think the child is sad, in pain, or overly sensitive. Without taking perspective, you may choose to act inappropriately based on your assumption. When we make assumptions without taking the time to communicate effectively, we make mistakes that hurt relationships.

I vividly remember getting sent to bed early for “pouting” in the 4th grade. My teacher moved me from the front of the classroom to the last row. I was heartbroken to be moved away from my friends and terrified to tell my parents because I thought I had done something

At the end of the night, I explained my angst when my mother stopped making assumptions about the cause of my “pouting” and helped me feel safe enough to talk. She helped me understand various other perspectives, “Maybe another student could not see or hear and needed to be moved forward. Maybe another student was getting in trouble in the back and needed to be closer to the teacher.” This was a “gold-star” moment in my mother’s parenting. Not only did she take the time to help me feel better, but she also modeled perspective-taking and created a bonding opportunity.

How often do we make assumptions about our children? You can only correctly take perspective if you have all the information. Find the right time and ask the hard questions before creating a narrative about your child that may not be true. Don’t make assumptions. Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want.

Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

Museum Masterpieces Art & Essay Contest

Naval Aviation Museum Foundation (NAMF) is excited to announce its third annual Museum Masterpieces Art and Essay Contest. The theme for this year’s contest is To The Rescue. This theme commemorates the 80th anniversary of the first mercy mission conducted by Naval and Coast Guard aviation’s first helicopter, the HNS-1 Hoverfly in 1944.

Naval, Marine, and Coast Guard Aviators conduct many humanitarian operations including rescuing people at sea, delivering emergency aid, and providing disaster relief for hurricanes, tornadoes, and earthquakes. All entries should communicate the theme, “To the Rescue.” All public, private, and homeschool students in grades Kindergarten – 12 are encouraged to participate. The contest calls for entries of original artwork from students in grades K – 12 and essays from students in grades 6 – 12. The contest will be separated into separate grade level groups. Escambia County Healthy Start Community Baby Shower

The Escambia County Healthy Start Coalition and Florida Department of Health in Escambia County are partnering with various organizations to host another community baby shower in Century, Florida. This is an event designed to serve families in the north Escambia region. It will be a free event, inviting new and expecting parents, and their families. The event will be held on Saturday, April 13, 2024, inside the Century Community Center at 6001a Industrial Blvd. from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.

More than ever, families struggle to access community resources and connections that can aid their journey through parenthood. This community baby shower will provide much-needed baby items in addition to connection with family support organizations. Caregivers attending this event will learn the basics of keeping themselves and their babies healthy. Guests are invited to be “showered” in resources and giveaways while supplies last.

Mozart’s Magnificent Voyage

West Florida Tech Student

Named Scholar Athlete of the Year

Jennifer Mims, a senior at West Florida High School, is a phenomenal all-around athlete, scholar, and winner of the Friday Night Rivals scholarship. Mims carries a 4.92 GPA and participates in the National Honor Society and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. She is a phenomenal all-around athlete. She qualified for the state meet in swimming and diving all four years -- two-time district champion in the 1-meter springboard. She also qualified for the state track meet in the 100 and 400 hurdles and one relay. Members First Credit Union presented Jennifer Mims with a $5,000 scholarship. She will run track at Belmont University.

East Hill Christian Visits State Capitol

East Hill Christian School’s eighth grade students visited Tallahassee to explore our state’s historic and current state capitol buildings. Through photographs, recordings, and displays throughout, and having the opportunity to sit in during a legislative session, our students enjoyed an immersive look into our state’s government, both past and present. The best part of these trips is seeing what our students are learning in the classroom come to life right in front of their eyes!

Pensacola Catholic High Class of 2024 Hall of Fame Announced

One of the time-honored traditions at Pensacola Catholic High School is the naming of Seniors to the Hall of Fame from the current Senior Class.

On February 23, ten Seniors were recognized for their status as exemplary Crusaders as they were inducted into the Hall of Fame during a ceremony in which their families joined them as their names were revealed during a student body assembly. The Hall of Fame was first conceived by the CHS Student Council in 1982 and its purpose is to honor students who show outstanding personal achievement and integrity through their attitude and service. The criteria to be nominated and inducted into the Hall of Fame include: an unweighted GPA of 2.0 or higher; good conduct, good citizenship; eligibility in light of the Academic Integrity Policy; performs service to school and community; displays leadership and a positive attitude; and is actively involved in school organizations. The Senior Class, athletic teams, clubs, and extracurricular organizations nominate an eligible Senior for consideration. After nominations are compiled, the faculty and Senior Class make the final selection through an anonymous balloting process. Congratulations to this year’s inductees to the CHS Hall of Fame: Maria Bush, Cooper Meckler, Natalie Biggs, Chris Rembert, Scott Sanderson, Julia Ulmer, Gabby Goyins, Virginia Lee, Mariana Contreras, and Ava Adams.

Escambia County History Fair

Congratulations to all students who participated in the Escambia County History Fair on February 13. The entries competed in a variety of categories including exhibits, websites, performances, documentaries, and historical papers. These students had advanced from school-level competitions. Creative Learning Academy Mathletes Shine at Pensacola Invite

Creative Learning Academy’s sixth through eighth-grade students showcased their mathematical finesse at the recent 15th Annual Pensacola Invitational PI Competition. This rigorous and challenging event, organized entirely by students, brought together math enthusiasts from Escambia County’s diverse educational landscape, spanning both public and private institutions. With categories tailored to all math levels through Eighth grade, participants engaged in individual testing and team rounds, each designed to challenge their problem-solving abilities to the fullest extent.

Held on March 9th, 2024, this year’s Pensacola Invitational once again offered a platform for emerging mathematicians to compete, thanks to the generous support of local sponsors. All county schools were encouraged to maximize student participation, fostering an atmosphere prepped and ready for intellectual growth and healthy competition. For CLA students, the opportunity to demonstrate their mathematical abilities was met with concentration and determination.

When time ran out and all pencils were down, CLA mathletes emerged with commendable achievements and recognition. From individual accolades to collective triumphs, their dedication and skill were evident across various categories. Here are the results for CLA students: Math 1 Individual: Ian Truong (1st), Ethan Johnson (2nd), Liam Walker (4th), Ryan Blalock (7th), Marshall Pilger (8th); Math 1 Team: CLA 1 (1st), CLA 2 (2nd). Blind Simulation at Montessori School

Students at Montessori School of Pensacola got to have an experience with what it might feel like to be blind. After a presentation from the Escambia County of Blind Services, students led each other through a maze of boxes that had been constructed. The student in front was blindfolded to simulate being visually impaired. Here is some of what students had to say about the presentation and the simulation.

“The maze was hard, but got easier about halfway through because I was getting used to using my other senses.”

“The maze was tough- we had the option to have a guide or a walking stick and I chose both. I bumped into almost everything.”

“You had to trust the person guiding you.”

“The visitors from the Division of Blind Services explained things so well- like eye diseases and technology for blind people and what life is like reading Braille.”

Aletheia Christian Academy Celebrates Ancient Day

Aletheia Christian Academy’s sophomore class celebrated Ancient Day on Tuesday, February 27th. Mr. Belton’s students explored World History by creating models of ancient historical structures such as the Roman Coliseum, the Temple of Heaven, and a typical Judean home. Other students discovered the past by creating replicas of artifacts such as the Winged Victory of Samothrace, a Greek theater mask, and an Egyptian sarcophagus.

Each student gave a presentation of their project, which included a discussion on how the artifact illuminates ancient history. The students’ semi-formal attire brought great dignity to the proceedings. Everyone came away from the experience knowing more about the distant past.

“History is a vital part of a Christian education,” said Mr. Jim Belton. “It serves as a laboratory of ideas. Many of the ‘new’ ideas trending on the internet today are ancient ideas wearing the costumes of modern language. Through the study of history, we can often identify which ideas worked in the past, and which were catastrophic failures.”

J.M. Tate Helps with Literacy Week at Local Schools

The J.M. Tate FFA Chapter helped get National FFA Week “MOOving” through Literacy at Local Elementary Schools. National FFA Week was February 17 - 24, 2024 and the J.M.

Tate FFA Chapter got things MOOving by sharing a story about Florida’s dairy industry to local first grade students. The J.M. Tate FFA officers, students from the Agriculture Communication class, and agriculture teachers/FFA Advisors partnered with Jim Allen Elementary and McArthur Elementary on February 16th to introduce the agriculture literacy program through Ag in the Classroom. Students read and shared “Moovers, Shakers, and Milk Makers,” a book which highlights dairy production here in Florida. The first grade students learned about the dairy cow breeds, the practices used to care for dairy cows, and how a dairy operates. After reading, the FFA students worked with the first graders on activities that focused on “Moovers, Shakers, and Milk Makers”, the Agriculture Literacy Day Book.

Celebrating Montessori Education with Montessori School of Pensacola

At Montessori schools around the world, the last week in February known as Montessori Education Week. This week was started to celebrate Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician, and the child-focused educational approach she developed. The week involves activities that help show appreciation for the uniqueness of the Montessori classroom and the benefits it offers children. At Montessori School of Pensacola students and teachers showed school spirit all week by wearing shirts from the annual school Minithon fundraiser runs. One evening, the parent-teacher organization hosted a fundraiser at Panera Bread. Another night, families were invited into the classrooms, so their child could show their favorite pieces of Montessori work. Maria Montessori opened her first “Casa de Bambini” in Italy in 1907 and there are now more than 40,000 Montessori schools worldwide.

Local Figure Skaters Place at Denver invitational

Local skaters Houston and Cameron Konetzki from Navarre, Florida competed in the 2024 Denver Invitational which was held March 7th10th. The event was hosted by the Denver Colorado Figure Skating and held in Highland Ranch, Colorado.

Debuting both their Ten Fox Pattern Dance Programs and Free Dance Programs in the Juvenile Combined Solo Dance Division, Houston finished in 2nd place and Cameron finished 4th. At this time Houston is ranked 2nd in both the Eastern Section and National Standings. Cameron is currently ranked 6th in the Eastern Section and 8th in National Standings. The U.S. Figure Skating Solo Dance Series runs March to September, with the 2024 National Solo Dance Final being held in Wesley Chapel, Florida mid-September. Both boys are associate members of the Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club and compete representing Baltimore Figure Skating Club where they began their skating journey and still have access to year-round ice.

Pensacola Catholic High School Math Team Competes

Congratulations to the Senior members of the CHS Math Team who competed in the Math Bowl on March 1 at Northwest Florida State College. The team finished second in their division with Nate Flores placing first overall. Mariana Contreras and Elizabeth Watson tied for seventh overall and Jackson Brewer rounded out the top ten. ECPS Special Olympics at Tate High

Escambia County Public Schools’ Special Olympics were held Wednesday, March 14 at Tate High School with over 400 student athletes and close to 700 Tate student volunteers assisting as “buddies” and event workers. The event began with a Special Olympics Torch making its way around the track at Carl Madison Field at Pete Gindl Stadium. The National Anthem was performed by Tate senior Ella Kizer. So proud of our Aggies and these wonderful athletes.

St. Paul Catholic School Fish Fry Volunteers

SPCS Middle school students have been volunteering at St. Paul Fish Fry events this Lenten season! We are thankful to our Knights of Columbus for allowing SPCS students to have this opportunity and proud of their commitment to serving their community!

N.B. Cook Students Presents to School Board

At a recent School Board meeting, all in attendance were treated to a special treat. N.B. Cook Elementary 5th grader Olivia Graham presented a five-scene dramati zation about the life of Marie van Britten Brown, an African American woman who is responsible for the invention of home security systems. The audience was captivated by Ms. Graham’s talent and poise. We know great things lie ahead for this talented young lady. A special thanks to Olivia’s teacher, Ms. Rachel Bismark, and N.B. Cook’s principal, Mr. Larry Knight.

Westgate Center Hosts Mardi Gras Parade

Under a cool, cloudy sky, Westgate Center held its annual Mardi Gras Parade. This event gets larger and more impressive every year.

We’d like to thank all of our community partners, law enforcement agencies, and local krewes who participated.

We can’t give our students all they need without your help. The parade brought a tremendous amount of joy to these wonderful students.

St. Paul Eagle Scout Alum Gives Back

St. Paul Catholic School alum Walton gave back to his former school with his Eagle Scout project! Students are so grateful and have been enjoying the new picnic tables! Thank you, Walton!

Aletheia Christian Students Compete in Speech Contest

Every year, Aletheia Christian Academy 4th6th grade students participate in the Tropicana Speech Contest. This program is underwritten by the Tropicana Corporation and coordinated by Holmes County 4-H. It has been in school systems across Florida since 1969 and continues to grow each year.

Teachers in 4th, 5th, and 6th grades set aside part of their classroom time to help students research, organize, practice, present, and critique speeches based on their topic of their choice.

Congratulations to Patrick Higgins (4th) and Lucy Jackson (6th) for moving forward to compete at the county level on March 14th.

Pensacola Figure Skaters Compete at ISI Winter Classic

Ten skaters from Greater Pensacola Figure Skating Club recently competed at the Ice Sports Industry’s National 2024 Winter Classic which was held at the Orlando Ice Den. Competing against over 500 skaters from as far away as British Columbia, New York and California, Pensacola was well represented with skaters bringing home 36 medals (6 first, 8 second, 10 third, 7 fourth, 1 fifth and 4 sixth) in a variety of categories. Montessori School of Pensacola Middle Schoolers on the Job

You’ve heard of interning while you are in college, but at Montessori School of Pensacola (MSP), 7th and 8th graders get a taste of the working world. 7th grade students take part in internships working in classrooms at MSP, while 8th grade students work in a business. They go through the process of contacting and applying This year, some feedback from 7th grade teaching interns included having to use patience and at time being stressed. One student said, “The most rewarding part was seeing the children’s faces after I gave them a lesson, they were often amazed.”

8th grade students interned a variety of businesses, including a hair salon, an industrial design firm, with an accountant, and at a bakery. The student who worked at bakery was at Continental Bakery in Birmingham, Alabama. They said, “I picked this internship because I enjoy baking and I wanted to intern at a real bakery.” They share, “I think interning is valuable because it teaches you more about a field you could possibly go into and it creates job opportunities.” They enjoyed decorating the sugar cookies the most.

“It’s time for karate class,” I said to my 13-year-old son.

“Do I have to go?”

“Yes.”

This has been a common exchange between us for a variety of activities over the past 10 years. He has tried everything from baseball to cooking class—yet nothing holds his interest as much as video games.

Every now and then I wonder if it is worth investing money and time into classes or sports he doesn’t want to participate in. But if I hold off on signing him up for things, he does nothing except play video games until we try something new again. It’s a never-ending cycle.

Are Video Games Healthy?

My son is not an anomaly. According to the Pew Research Center, 72% of teens—and 84% of teen boys—play video games.

There is a lot of conflicting information about video game use, so it can be hard for parents to know what to allow. It’s screen time, of course, but video gaming is often also a social activity played together with friends either in the same room or online. And if it’s a popular pastime among a teen’s peer group, some parents may be inclined to let them play for an unlimited amount of time with their friends.

Playing video games can have positive benefits, says Dr. Larry D. Rosen, a professor at California State University and author of The Distracted Mind. Gaming “can offer some skill-building, including

reaction time, executive functioning, and strategic thinking,” says Rosen. He cautions, though, that “playing video games can be very addictive and create problematic thinking, including desensitization to violence.”

Video Game Obsession?

Rosen recommends that video game play should be limited, since research shows physiological arousal increases when playing—and kids need breaks from that. He suggests limiting gaming for teens to 60-90 minutes at a time, even if parents decide to allow more total time daily.

Maria Sanders, a licensed social worker and certified parent coach, also recommends creating clear boundaries with your teen regarding when and how long they are allowed to play. She says an example of boundaries might be letting teens choose to play an hour of video games either before or after completing homework.

She encourages parents to learn more about their teen’s interest in video games. Sit down and play the games with them. “The child will see that you have an interest in what they are doing,” she says, “and you will learn about why they are so attracted to the game.”

Encouraging Other Activities

Teens should live “balanced lives and not live solely in the video game,” says Sanders. But if your teen doesn’t express interest in anything else, it may be difficult to figure out which activity or sport

to encourage. Sanders suggests asking your teen about the type of video games they like to play. Then you might be able to figure out an activity that uses similar skills or gameplay. An avid Fortnite player, for example, might enjoy a laser tag league.

Parents should avoid simply announcing which activities their teen must do. Rosen stresses the importance of including the child in the decision-making process. With your child’s input, create a list of the types of activities they could do at home during unstructured times or when they feel bored. Similarly, involving your child in discussions about organized extracurriculars will prevent them from feeling forced into participating in certain activities.

Stay Positive

Often parents make comments like “video games are a waste of time” or “video games are unhealthy” in an effort to decrease video game use. Rosen says this almost always backfires. Instead, parents could reward the child for responsible behavior. For example, when a child demonstrates that they can stop playing on their own without parent badgering, parents might loosen strict time limits on screen time.

Instead of making negative statements about video games, Sanders says, “The best thing a parent can do is guide their child down a path of self-reflection. Asking questions like, I notice you seem pretty tired after playing video games. How are you feeling? will help your child figure out their own beliefs about video game use.”

Parent negativity can make a teen feel as if they are being judged and misunderstood. Focus on their strengths while playing a video game— perhaps, for instance, their ability to help a friend get to another level. A parent should notice that ability and point out how it might connect to real-life situations. Next step: Parents can help them get out there and do just that.

Video game addiction is not yet a disorder recognized by the American Psychiatric Association. The World Health Organization, however, recently recognized the existence of “gaming disorder” for the first time. Excessive video game play and other types of addictions do show similar patterns, says Rosen.

Some signs parents should look for:

• Isolating behavior or ignoring family and friends

• Sneaking video game play at night or at friends’ houses

• Changes in eating or sleeping patterns

• A decline in academic performance or not doing homework

• A need to continue playing video games beyond a time limit

• An interest only in playing video games, at the expense of other activities

• Always thinking about video games

Taco Tuesday was a phrase originally coined in the 80s to help a popular Mexican restaurant gain more business on its slowest day of the week - Tuesday! It didn’t take long for the phrase to be picked up by other restaurants and then eventually make its way into meal planning for parents across the country; officially making Tuesday nights exciting everywhere!

This month’s Dinner’s Ready recipe is brought to you by the Arevalo family from Pensacola.

“We all love tacos,” shared Megan. “My husband Alex has many taco-themed shirts! Our family could eat some version of tacos every night...burritos, tostadas, fajitas, taco salad, etc.”

Alex is originally from El Salvador. He and Megan met while attending high school in Tallahassee in 1996 and married in 2008.

Alex is a pediatric cardiologist and Megan is a veterinarian for local shelters. Together, they have eight-year-old twins, Aaron and Elise. Aaron is very athletic and loves to be on any type of field, but excels at soccer, and Elise loves theatre, choir, and most things artsy.

“We are in that busy season of life with work and kid activities,” Megan shared. “One of our biggest joys in life is support-

ing the kids while doing the activities they love.”

While the family loves to cut loose and eat out on the weekends, most weeknights are spent at home having dinner together in the kitchen.

“Alex and I share cooking duties but Alex cooks more often because it is his best stress reliever and hobby to be in the kitchen. He loves to pair his meals with a specialty or signature cocktail,” Megan light-heartedly shared. “I also tease that he likes to cook because if I cook we will all eat vegetarian. In our house, it is not just meatless Mondays, but meatless any day I cook!”

Cool Ranch Crockpot Chicken with black beans is a favorite in the Arevalo home because it is easy to make for meat lovers and vegetarians alike. Megan chooses to sub black beans for her protein while the others enjoy them as a side or even a topping. From the Arevalo house to yours... live any day like it’s Taco Tuesday using this recipe!

Instructions:

1. Place chicken breasts into a crock pot.

2. Add package of ranch dressing season ing and package of mild taco seasoning. Then completely cover the chicken with broth for 5 hours on the low setting.

3. Lightly toast the tostada shells.

4. Shred the chicken in the crock pot and leave it there to serve.

5. Assemble tostadas with the desired top pings and garnish with lime, jalapeño and cilantro.

Ingredients:

• 12-ounce can of black beans, rinsed

• 1 tablespoon onion powder

• 1 tablespoon oregano

• 1/2 teaspoon sea salt

• 32 oz vegetable broth

Cool Ranch Chicken Tostadas

Ingredients:

• 4 chicken breasts, about 1.5 lb

• 1 packet of taco seasoning

• 1 packet of ranch dressing seasoning

• 1.5 cans of chicken broth

• Tostadas, 1-2 packages

• Toppings of choice: We use 1/2 purple onion chopped, warmed corn, 1 tomato chopped, 1 avocado sliced and crumbled cojita cheese

• A garnish of choice: We like uses sliced jalapeño, cilantro and lime wedges

1. Add beans, seasonings, and vegetables to the Instant Pot. Pres sure cook on high for 25 minutes. Then let the beans rest in the pot for 20 minutes so the steam can dissipate naturally. 2. Carefully remove the lid once steam has fully escaped. The beans should be tender and perfectly cooked, but if not, seal the lid again and pressure cook on high for an additional 10-20 minutes, or until they’re tender.

You’re in public and your child makes an embarrassing comment to someone. They pick their nose while you are eating at a restaurant. They share an embarrassing story about you.

Every parent has been there and most of the time other parents understand the ups and downs of parenting and are willing to be patient, help out, and excuse behaviors that seem impolite or embarrassing. Sticky situations with kids can be difficult to navigate, but there are a few things you can do to make the best of them.

Your child does something rude at a restaurant

You’re eating out and your child does something gross or impolite like burping, picking their nose, or throwing food. Place your hand on the child’s shoulder and quietly ask them to stop the behavior and explain that they are being impolite. If you think their behavior is rooted in attention seeking and is somewhat tolerable, it may be appropriate to simply ignore it. However, if your child persists, it may be best to ask them to take a bathroom break. When you return to the table, try to find something to distract your child. Some parents may bring a tablet, coloring book, or small toys to keep their child busy while waiting for their food but if you find yourself unprepared you can play “I spy” or another guessing game to keep them occupied.

Pro parent tip: Put together a “busy bag” that you can bring to restaurants. Include a few art supplies, small toys, books, magnet toys, or fidgets to keep your child

ate, have your child apologize to them as well. Let your child know that it is never okay to make fun of someone’s appearance or comment on their race, weight, or age. If you feel that your child is simply curious about something and not making the comment rudely, try to take the time, when appropriate, to explain to your child. For example, if your child has a question about why someone is in a wheelchair you could explain that they need it to help them move around.

Pro parent tip: Let your child know that people come in all sizes, shapes, races, and ages. Our differences are what makes us each special. Your child will follow your lead when it comes to accepting others. If you celebrate diversity, they will most likely do the same. Talk to your child about differences and let them know it’s okay to ask questions but never to make fun of others.

Your child shares embarrassing and private information about you

“My mom and dad kiss a lot. And I mean a lot!” was what one preschooler told me while I was teaching a Sunday school class. Another child told me how their dad snores and has stinky feet. Young kids usually don’t have much of a filter and are willing to share private and sometimes embarrassing information with teachers, friends and even complete strangers. In this situation, try to change the subject or turn the comment into a joke. “Well, we do have four kids” was how the kissing couple responded after their child shared that information.

Pro parent tip: When it’s the right time, you can talk to your kids about not sharing private information outside of the family. In the moment, try to turn the moment into a joke. If you brush it off with a laugh, others are more likely to do so.

During the months of potty training, accidents are likely to happen. It’s best not to make a big production of it and clean it up as quickly as possible. Try not to shame or embarrass your child, which can cause problems long term and even prolong potty training. Potty accidents always seem to happen in the most inconvenient times and places. Ideally you have an extra change of clothes in your car or diaper bag, but if not, it’s okay to leave early or borrow clothes from someone if needed.

These sticky situations can be embarrassing, but the good news is, they are common. Every parent has a few embarrassing moments they can share about their parenting journey. Often in these instances, you may be able to use humor to distract from the situation or simply apologize and move on. If nothing else, you can wait until your child is a teenager and share some of your own stories that might make them blush now that they are a little older. Sarah Lyons

Q I have an idea for a small business I think would be a huge success in my area. How do you feel about me keeping my current day job, and hiring a full-time manager for the business to handle the day-to-day operations, while I do the accounting and oversee things? If it doesn’t break even or better, I can always close it. In my mind, I equate my plan to being like selling real estate on the side, while keeping my regular, full-time job. What are your thoughts?

A. To be honest, I don’t think there’s a high likelihood of success using this model. Unless, of course, you’re willing to devote 40 to 50 hours a week to this new business, in addition to the time you spend at your current job. In my mind, you’d have a better chance of making it

work if you bought an existing business with a manager already in place. That way, at least you wouldn’t have to be so entrepreneurial and constantly involved in things like adjusting the business model, checking prices and dealing with customers.

Honestly? This idea isn’t a lot like real estate at all. Real estate will run itself—for the most part—once you find a tenant. Also, the number of hours you’d have to put into selling real estate on the side is nothing like the time you’d spend getting a new business off the ground.

Here’s the deal. The secret ingredient to your small business success is you. You are the ideas, the passion and the energy. The problem with your plan is that you

are only a small part of the equation. Franchises and chains try to train this kind of stuff into people with pep talks and other forms of motivation, but when something’s your baby, it’s really your baby. You’re going do your best, days, nights and weekends, to grow it properly. You’re going to worry over it constantly, and treat it almost like it’s your very own child.

I love your entrepreneurial spirit, but I’m sorry, I just don’t like this plan. It sounds like your idea is to swing by once in a while, eyeball things and crunch a few numbers. And if that’s the case, I wouldn’t waste my time or money if I were you. You’d probably benefit your community more by just giving what you’d invest in the venture to a good charity.

AI and the Loss of Truth

In today’s rapidly advancing technological landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as a powerful tool that has the potential to revolutionize various aspects of our lives. From assisting with everyday tasks to making groundbreaking scientific discoveries, AI has undoubtedly transformed how we live and work. Our kids are using it daily in classrooms. It is on their phones via the apps they use. However, as AI continues to evolve, there is a growing concern about the potential loss of truth accompanying its widespread adoption.

One of the primary issues surrounding the loss of truth and AI is the rise of deepfake technology. Deepfakes are manipulated videos, images, or audio files that appear very realistic, making it difficult to distinguish between what is real and what is fabricated. With the help of AI algorithms, individuals can create deepfakes that can be used to spread disinformation, deceive the public, and manipulate public opinion. This poses a significant threat to the integrity of information and raises

questions about the authenticity of the content we consume. Not only are adults having a hard time distinguishing between what is real and what is not, but our kids are as well. Couple that with a bit of teenage impulse control, and we are seeing many fake images and content being rapidly sent by kids to one another. There are numerous serious concerns here.

In addition to deepfakes, AIpowered algorithms used by social media platforms and search engines can contribute to the loss of truth. These algorithms are designed to personalize the content we see based on our preferences and interests. While this may seem convenient, it also creates echo chambers, where individuals are only exposed to information that aligns with their existing beliefs and biases. As a result, people are less likely to encounter diverse perspectives and alternative viewpoints, leading to a narrowing of their understanding of the world. This can further reinforce existing prejudices and hinder critical thinking. And as we

know, in order for our kids to grow and learn, they must be exposed to various thoughts and viewpoints. It builds character and empathy, and challenges thought processes.

To address the potential loss of truth associated with AI, it is crucial to prioritize ethical considerations and responsible deployment of AI technologies. This includes developing robust safeguards against deepfakes and disinformation, promoting digital literacy and critical thinking skills, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability among AI developers and providers. Additionally, efforts should be made to educate our youth on responsible, ethical use of AI.

We must encourage them to think critically and with an open, curious mind. As parents, we must stay up to date on AI to have educated conversations with our kids. Because no matter our thoughts around it, it is here to stay.
