Take stress out of car shopping S

ome of life’s most stressful events include buying a home, starting a new job, and having a baby. One purchase that often tops these events in the stress-factor is purchasing a new car or truck. Today, the consumer can do a lot of research to minimize their car-buying stressors. The Internet has made the world a small place to live in, and Dave Jacobs, general manager of Kamloops Dodge, has noticed that most of his clients come in well educated about what their needs, wants, and desires are for their next automotive purchase. So what can you do as a prospective buyer to set yourself up for a successful car purchase? Jacobs has four pieces of advice to help you get on your way and make sure the carbuying process goes as smoothly as possible: 1. Do your research: Cars are like tools, you need to buy the right tool for the job which means don’t buy a vehicle for what you may do sometimes, buy it for what you do with it most times. Stay focused here as it’s easy to get off track. 2. Set a budget: Know what you are comfortable with paying for a new vehicle in conjunction with your research. There is no sense test-driving $50,000 vehicles if what you are comfortable with is a $32,000 vehicle. You will limit confusion and prevent a sense of disappointment. 3. Choose a reputable dealer: Most dealers have great people working for them with a passion for the brand they

represent and passion for the community they serve – don’t be afraid to let them help you.

4. Communicate your needs with the sales rep.:

Realize that your sales representative are like guidance councillors and are there to assist with those last few steps. They want to make them stress-free, fun, and friendly all you need to do now is tell them how.

Elegance comes standard in Cyclone toy haulers W

hile other toy hauler manufacturers have limited many of their interior designs to reflect a purely ‘racing’ lifestyle, Cyclone has listened to what customers are looking for and are excited to offer the best of both worlds — a coach that may say ‘Racer’ on the outside, but features truly elegant residential form and multi-lifestyle function on the inside! Some of the impressive features include the three seasons wall patio door option. Enclose your garage area while letting in the daylight and containing your heated or air conditioned air. The

doors easily slide open for passage to the ramp door patio and the doors swing open easily for loading and unloading toys. Cyclone owners can also enjoy built-in outdoor speakers. Listening to your favorite CDs, catch up on the news, or listen to the big game on these powerful outdoor speakers, conveniently located patio side and easily controlled by the garage receiver. What ever unit you decide to purchase, it’s always important to shop close-tohome. Heartland, the makers of Cyclone, urge you to consider buying

at your local dealer. Dealers are part of your community, providing jobs and contributing to your local economy. These dealers are under obligation to provide warranty service for products they sell, but are not legally required to service products purchased from other dealers. At some point, you may need to return to the dealer you buy from — why not stay close to home? Country RV on Chief Louis Way is proud to sell Heartland Recreational Vehicles. Visit Country RV to enjoy excellent selection and service on a wide variety of RV models.

or many vehicle owners, finding the right auto body shop is critical. The average price of a new automobile continues to rise and protecting that investment is important to motorists hoping to extend the lives of their vehicles and maximize their investments. Part of protecting your automobile investment is finding an auto body shop you can trust. A trustworthy mechanic whom you’re comfortable with can ease any concerns you have when taking the car in for maintenance, whether that maintenance is a routine tuneup or more extensive repairs. n Get a recommendation. Aside from his skill set, a trustworthy mechanic’s best friend might just be his reputation. Word-of-mouth recommendations from satisfied customers are invaluable assets for mechanics, and such recommendations should be equally valued by vehicle owners. When

looking for a new auto body shop, drivers should ask friends, neighbors, coworkers, and family members if they can recommend any local shops. n Don’t be afraid to get estimates. Drivers who tend to agonize the most over finding a new auto body shop tend to be those with little history taking vehicles in for repairs. This group is likely growing thanks to the escalating costs of new vehicles. Those costs are encouraging drivers to keep their vehicles longer, which means drivers are now keeping their vehicles even after the manufacturer warranty has expired. The cheapest estimate won’t necessarily be the best fit for you and your vehicle, but multiple estimates should give you an idea of how much certain repairs should cost and who may or may not be overcharging you. n Consider the shop’s location. Recent transplants to an area who might have relocated for a new job often want to familiarize themselves with their new home base as much as possible, and this can pay dividends when a vehicle needs repairs. n Ask as many questions as you need to. Some drivers, especially those who admit to having limited knowledge of cars, feel as if they must simply accept a mechanic’s assessment and estimates at face value. Though a good mechanic won’t try to mislead you, it’s still good to ask as many questions as possible before agreeing to let an auto body shop work on your vehicle. Initially, finding a new auto body shop can seem like a daunting task. But seeking the help of others and taking some additional steps can make the process go more smoothly and increase your chances of finding a mechanic you can trust. -Metro News Service

hat does your car say about you? Psychologists say our cars mirror our personality, creativity and intelligence. In other words, you are what you drive. Detail your car like it’s a diamond, add custom wheels, a sweet sound system and tinted windows, and all of a sudden it’s in a class of its own, and so are you. “We can make almost any car, truck or SUV look like a million bucks,” explained J.T. Tordoff, manager of Platinum Autosports. “Quality, custom products and individualized service give us satisfied customers every time,” he explained. Platinum’s top-to-bottom approach is reflected in its impressive range of services and products, from windows to wheels and everything in between. They offer an array of durable, virtually maintenance-free window films in a variety of colours and shades, and they’re a “one-stop source” for custom performance, alloy or chrome wheels. All tires are not considered equal D

rivers rarely think of the tires on their vehicles until they have a flat. But the type of tires on your vehicle can impact its performance. When choosing tires for their vehicles, drivers should consider a host of factors, including the terrain and driving conditions vehicles are likely to encounter. Understanding tires and what makes some a better fit than others for certain vehicles can make for safe driving and improved handling.

All Season Tires

The most common type of tire and arguably the best known is the standard all-season tire. Many vehicles come equipped with these tires, which are designed to be versatile enough to grip the road in various conditions. They are commonly made of a harder rubber that will not wear out quickly and will retain their tread. Most day-to-day driving can be done on all-season tires.

High Performance Tires

People who live in dry climates or drive sports and racing cars can benefit from high-performance tires. These tires are specifically designed to grip the road better and offer superior handling under higher speeds. Because high-performance tires are made of a softer rubber compared to standard tires, they will not last as long as all-season tires.

Snow Tires

People who live in snowy, icy conditions will benefit from the use of snow tires. These tires are designed with special

treads to offer more traction in slippery conditions. The rubber used to manufacture the tire can remain flexible even at extremely low temperatures. Winter tires are best reserved for extreme weather and not used all season long because they will wear out more quickly than others. They may not have the same level of traction on clear roads. In some cases, winter tires may have metal studs included to enhance traction in icy situations. People who do not want to switch tires when cold weather arrives sometimes invest in snow chains that improve traction on standard tires.

Mud Tires

Muddy areas can be just as slippery as snowy conditions. Mud tires are designed similarly to snow tires but will have extra grooves and a tread pattern that facilitates movement of mud away from the tires and road. Mud tires may be wider than standard tires as well.

Truck Tires

Drivers of trucks or sport-utility vehicles often need special truck tires. These tires can better handle the weight and size of a larger vehicle. Many drivers stick with the type of tire that originally came with their truck. Drivers who like to go off-roading may need an all-terrain tire to offer more traction when climbing hills or traversing different conditions. It can be easy to overlook the importance of tires, but tires help vehicles remain on the road and can affect mileage, maneuverability and safety. -Metro News Service

he thunderous roar of the most recognizable motorcycle brand in the world has again stepped it up. HarleyDavidson just launched the 2014 line of touring motorcycles with changes we’ve all been waiting for. “The steering is different, the saddlebags are different, the entertainment system is completely different than it was before,” said Kevin Chow, marketing manager for Kamloops Harley-Davidson. “There’s a 6.5-inch touchscreen display with built-in GPS, Bluetooth, voice connectivity. This is exciting stuff for all Harley-Davidson riders.” The most innovative and exciting feature of the 2014 touring motorcycles is the all-new ‘Twin Cooled’ High Output Twin Cam 103 engine featured in three of the touring models. This new engine system is something riders will have to see to believe, and the cooling system not only delivers more power, but makes it more efficient as well. Kamloops Harley-Davidson will be showing off the new 2014 changes on two different dates. On Sept. 28 the dealership is hosting an open house, complete with a customer appreciation barbeque, in-store specials, and of course, demoing of motorcycles. On Oct. 6 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. the Harley-Davidson Test Our Metal semi-truck will be at the Kamloops HarleyDavidson lot loaded with the new 2014 motorcycles. During this free event everyone is invited. You’ll need a D.O.T.

Product knowledge from your salesperson is not necessarily the # 1 reason to buy. You have to look at the entire dealership as a whole. There are key items that are a must to be a RV DEALERSHIP. Ask to meet the service manager. Ask to see the service department facilities. If they don’t have one, you really have to think about who is doing your warranty work? Is it being farmed out to someone else? Will they even be able to address any service or warranty issues when they happen to arise? Do they employ competent RV Technicians to properly diagnose and repair your RV appliances? Are the accessories you purchased actually being installed at this location? Check out the parts department. Meet the parts manager and get a feel for

Settle in for a good long drive

R

oad trips are popular all year long, and driving the same roads during various seasons can yield entirely different views along the way. Many scenic highways can take travelers across the country, and for those drivers interested in traveling the longest roads in North America, there are two options at the ready. n At 4,990 miles (8,030 kilometers), the Trans-Canada Highway is the longest roadway in North America. It is a federal-provincial highway system that travels through all 10 provinces of Canada between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. A person can travel all the way from Newfoundland to British Columbia on the highway. The system was approved in 1949 and the highway officially opened in 1962. Drivers on the highway will easily recognize the green-and-white maple leaf route markers. n Drivers south of the Canadian border can travel along U.S. Route 20. Spanning 3,365 miles (5,415 kilometers), Route 20 is an east-west highway and the longest road in the United States. In the east, Route 20 terminates in Boston, Mass. In the west, it ends at Newport, Ore. The “0” in the route’s number indicates it is a coast-to-coast route. Route 20 travels through Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. n Although the length of U.S. Route 6 was shortened when California renumbered its highways in 1964 and a portion of

Detailing vital for maintenance A

t 4-D Auto Shine, cleaning your rig involves more than just a hose and soapy water job. From boats to coupes to semi trucks, the crew at the shop can take on any task no matter how much grease, grime or gunk involved. Dean Matthews has owned the award-winning detailing shop for 20 years, and 4-D Auto Shine has been in business for 24 years, making it the longest established detailing shop in Kamloops. Matthews and his team of experts have everything you need to make your ride shine. “We do complete detailing, engine shampooing, washes, waxes, polishing, anything to do with detailing and cleaning up a vehicle,” Matthews said. According to Matthews, keeping your ride clean is one of the best things you can do as far as the trade-in and resale value goes. “I’ve always said that for the amount of money you have invested in a vehicle nowadays, for that extra $200 a year to keep them up, it’s well worth it. If you let them go, your trade-in valued decreases.” Having your vehicle kept clean also helps expose underlying issues earlier like oil leaks and rust spots. Matthews is able to nip rust spots in the bud before they grow to bigger issues. “With the metallic paints, there’s little metal slivers that go in between the layers of paint and they’ll start rusting, and when they start rusting, it gets in behind the paint and if you

don’t take those out, you’re eventually going to have little rust bubbles,” he said. “So we help with that; we take a clay bar and we take those slivers out, and we wax and take those dimples out.” With off-roading and hunting season in full swing, it’s also important to get your buck-whacked trucks in and have them polished and waxed before the winter driving conditions set in. Be sure to pamper your ride at 4-D Auto Shine.

transfer case mounted by the rear of the transmission. A button or selector lever on older model SUVs would switch the vehicle from 2WD to 4WD. Unlike in AWD systems, the front and rear axles are locked together in 4WD systems. Four-wheel-drive systems are better for off-roading, rockclimbing and driving through mud and water. Individuals who participate in many off-road recreational activities will find that 4WD, especially in vehicles with more gears, is more effective and provides better traction. All-wheel-drive provides stability, largely on roadways, and enables the vehicle to modify the level of power to either the front or rear wheels to improve traction as needed. Allwheel-drive is adequate for many drivers and situations. It is important to note that, on icy or slippery roads, neither AWD or 4WD systems assist with braking or completely prevent cars from skidding on slick surfaces. Having the ability to engage all four wheels at the same time should not be used as a replacement for cautious driving in inclement weather. Four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive both provide power to all four wheels on the vehicle but have subtle differences that make each better for certain driving conditions.

D001793918

inter weather is just around the corner, leaving some drivers wondering if their two-wheel-drive vehicles can handle roads covered in snow and ice. Now is the time people flock to car and truck dealerships to trade in their cars for something with a little more power and traction and also to take advantage of end-of-season pricing. When faced with an array of vehicles boasting fourwheel-drive and all-wheel-drive, consumers often wonder about the differences between the two options or if there is any difference at all. Though similar, four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive are not quite the same. Four-wheel-drive systems, often referred to as 4WD, trace their origins to the late 1800s, while all-wheel-drive, or AWD, did not arrive until the late 1970s, when an AWD system was used on an Audi vehicle for rally racing. Now many cars and trucks come with 4WD or AWD, particularly crossovers and SUVs. Both drive systems engage all four wheels at the same time to provide more traction. On AWD systems, the powering of the wheels is automatic and usually handled by the electronic system of the car. Some vehicles drive in two-wheel-drive, but then engage AWD when sensors detect a need for more traction and maneuverability. When operating 4WD vehicles, drivers may have to manually engage the system. True 4WD uses a

he beginning of an era started in Kamloops 75 years ago when Syd Smith moved his family here from Saskatchewan and built what is now one of the most recognizable dealership names in the city. Since the Muzzillo and Schreiner families took over from the Smiths in 1970, it has been family run ever since. Albert Muzzillo and Roger Schreiner ran it until 1990 and their sons Anthony Muzzillo and Michael Schreiner took it over from there. “It was originally called Syd Smith Ltd.,” said Anthony Muzzillo, Smith GM’s dealer principal. “We changed the name but kept the Smith namesake because it was so well known in Kamloops for so many years.” The result of being such a recognizable name in Kamloops has given the current generation of Smith GM owners a heightened sense of community, and giving back to those who have supported them throughout the years is one of the company’s top priorities. “We’ve been very involved in the community in many respects and we believe that it’s important to be a big part of the community,” Muzzillo said. “We live here, we raise our families here, and we support different organizations because they support us. That’s just what you need to do when you’re a part of the community.” One of the top ways Smith GM gives back is through Lucille,

Proceeds from every rental goes to help local charities, which in the past have included the Rotary Club of Kamloops, the Kamloops MS Bike Tour, the Relay for Life and more. New cars need fewer oil changes M

otorists who still adhere to the old standard of changing their vehicles’ oil every 3,000 miles (5,000 kms) are likely wasting their money. The majority of today’s auto manufacturers now build vehicles that can go twice as long, if not longer, between oil changes. Many automakers now call for oil changes every 7,500 miles (12,000 kilometres), and some go even further, recommending oil changes every 10,000 miles (16,000 kms). Vehicle owners should consult their owner’s manuals for advice on how often their vehicles’ oil should be changed. When establishing an oil change schedule for their vehicles, many drivers are hesitant to abandon the conventional interval schedule that was long espoused by the auto industry. But advancements in technology have allowed manufacturers to recommend longer intervals between oil changes, which benefits motorists’ bottom lines and even the environment. Rather than needlessly wasting perfectly good oil, in many instances motorists can now continue to use that oil twice as long, if not longer, reducing waste-oil dumping as a result. When consulting an owner’s manual for recommended oil change intervals, owners should resist the temptation to follow the “severe” schedules listed in many owner’s manuals. Such schedules are rarely applicable under normal circumstances, and only serve to waste drivers’ money and oil. -Metro News Service

Don’t forget to adjust the headrest W

hile buckling seatbelts is second nature when getting into a car, how many of us think to adjust the headrest? Reports show that headrests are one of the most overlooked safety features in motor vehicles today and many don’t realize the important role they play in preventing neck, brain and spinal cord related injuries. “Headrests are designed to work alongside the seatbelt so that when an accident occurs it prevents the head from twisting backwards, which subsequently results in whiplash,” explains Mauro Convertini, an insurance and claims expert at Aviva Canada. “Drivers can sustain an injury from an incorrectly adjusted headrest even at speeds as low as 15 kilometres per hour—the same speed as the average bicycle.” According to an Insurance Bureau of Canada study, only 14 per cent of drivers on the road have their headrests in the proper position. With whiplash being the most common soft tissue injury in auto collisions, it underscores the importance for all passengers to adjust their headrests properly. Convertini recommends that drivers follow three simple steps in order to prevent injuries associated with improper headrest position: n The top of the headrest should be in a straight line with the top of your head. n Position the centre of your headrest so that it is slightly Oldest, Most Reputable Used Car Dealer in Kamloops Since 1964 – Credit Specialists Can you believe it? Storing your car? Clean it up first C

anadians take a great deal of pride in ensuring their cars sparkle and shine during the summer months by washing and cleaning them regularly. However, many of us don’t realize that cleaning our cars before we put them away in storage for the colder months is just as important as the first wash of spring, as it will protect the car against corrosion. Autoglym Canada offers the following easy steps for washing your car before storing it for the winter: Wash and dry the exterior to remove industrial fallout including tree sap, traffic film and surface contaminants Pressure wash the accumulated soiling from the underside, wheel arches and the nooks and crannies of the vehicle Polish the car with a product like Autoglym Super Resin Polish to correct paintwork and rectify imperfections, and then wax the car to protect the achieved result. Ensure that you don’t leave any polish or wax on for the duration of storage, especially on non-covered cars -- any debris in the environment will settle on the surface and could scratch the finish when you’re removing the dried out polish or wax n Remove any food wrappers/debris from the interior before vacuuming n Clean and dry soiled fabric or hard plastics using an interior car shampoo n Clean and protect leather by using leather cleaner and conditioner

Before you put your car away for winter, make sure to give it a thorough clean.

n Make sure your car is completely dry inside and out before covering it. A quality breathable storage cover can then be placed over the car. — News Canada

Buying a car? Choose colour wisely T

he colour drivers choose for their car may say something about driver personalities and preferences. It also may play a role in the propensity to get into an accident. Various studies have been conducted to determine if a certain car colour puts a driver at a greater risk for a crash. Though it’s difficult to pinpoint which colour vehicles are most likely to be in accidents, common sense suggests that certain colours that are more conspicuous on the road are more easily seen, and this may make them less prone to accidents. Daimler Benz once conducted a study on the conspicuousness of cars. White cars were the most inconspicuous, followed by black, dark red and blue. Dark-coloured vehicles tend to be the most difficult to see on the road and therefore might be most prone to accidents. Another study from researchers at the University of Auckland in New Zealand in 2003 showed that drivers of brown cars had a higher risk of injuries in car accidents. Black and green cars also were involved in a high number of car accidents resulting in injuries. In addition, findings also indicated that people who drove silver cars had a 50 percent less chance of being involved in accidents resulting in injury. The reason why certain colour vehicles are involved in more accidents was missing from the studies. Visibility may play a role, which would make lighter colour vehicles less prone to

accidents. Another point to consider is that certain colours may be favored by individuals who have specific driving tendencies. For example, silver and gray cars are often seen as conservative and may be driven by an older demographic that is more cautious on the road. Black cars are often viewed as sleek and may be favored by those who like to push the envelope regarding speed. While vehicle colour may play a role in accidents, other factors also come into play, such as usage of lights and other features. The National Safety Council stated the safest car colour to be “one that is highly visible in the widest range of lighting, weather, and vision conditions.” They also indicated that white is most visible in uniform lighting but can be an unsafe colour in bright sunlight, snow and fog. Safety behind the wheel has a lot do with driver ability. Defensive driving can significantly reduce accident risk. Here are some other ways to reduce accidents. n Do not tailgate. Leave an adequate cushion between your car and the one in front of you to allow for braking or maneuvering around an obstacle. n Use daytime running lights when available to make your car even more visible in all weather conditions. n Leave for trips early enough so that you’re not rushing and being aggressive on the roadway. — Metro News Service

Insurance key for winter travel

I

t’s that time of year again, when Canadian snowbirds make their plans to spend the winter in warmer locales. RSA, one of Canada’s leading travel insurance providers, surveyed more than 2,400 Canadian travel consumers and discovered there are different categories of snowbirds with varying travel habits and preferences. “As our population ages, the snowbird sector has grown and diversified,” says Erin Finn, director of underwriting for RSA’s travel insurance division. “Our research has found there is noticeable variation in travel habits between different categories of snowbirds, in terms of trip lengths, frequency and destinations.” In addition to traditional snowbirds – 65-and-ups who travel longer than 30 days at a time and typically spend their winters in the common U.S. sun destinations – there is also a younger segment of snowbirds emerging. They are baby boomers, and they have their own unique preferences, typically favouring trips to more exotic, overseas locations. They’re also more likely to spend their time parasailing or trekking than lying on the beach. And, they tend to travel more frequently, but take slightly shorter trips than traditional snowbirds.RSA offers some recommendations for snowbirds and others buying travel insurance: n Don’t wait until the last minute. Talk to an insurance broker and get a policy that suits your travel needs. n Ensure that you have adequate emergency medical insur-

ance – up to $5 million – as well as trip cancellation and interruption insurance, if you require it for your trip. n Ensure your policy has you covered for the entire duration of your trip. n Check to see what exclusions and limitations your policy contains. Are there conditions around your health status, the part of the world you’re visiting or the activities you’ll be doing? It’s a good idea to talk to your broker about your destination and the kinds of activities you have planned to make sure you have the right coverage. n Ensure you have access to 24-7, worldwide telephone assistance, should you have to report a claim or require travel assistance.

Start your motorcycle journey out right M

n Practice away from other motorists. Don’t start riding on a freeway until you have grown accustomed to riding the bike at slow practice speeds you’ve honed away from other motorists. Empty parking lots make ideal training grounds. Once you feel comfortable in the parking lot, gradually move to roads without heavy traffic, such as residential neighborhoods. Once you’re truly comfortable on the bike, then you can hit the highway. n Go to class. A motorcycle safety course might be a requirement in some areas but not required in others. Regardless of whether or not it’s required, take the class anyway. Such classes might cost a few hundred dollars, but their value far exceeds that cost. A safety course prepares riders for anything they might encounter on the road. Just be sure to enroll in a class that teaches accident evasion. n Get the right size. Some riders envision themselves at the helm of a big hog, while others see themselves tooling down the highway on an ultra-light bike. But don’t go to extremes in either direction, at least not with your first motorcycle. A heavy bike might be more stable, but it’s also harder to control. A lighter bike might feel easier to control, but it’s best to wait until you have had a year or two of experience before buying bikes often referred to as “crotch rockets,” which are sporty and fast. — Metro News Service

en and women who ride motorcycles often insist there’s nothing quite like it. Riding a motorcycle not only can be exhilarating and provide a feeling unlike any other, but it also requires patience and discipline for beginners and veteran riders alike. Riding a motorcycle carries a certain stigma of being dangerous, but that’s only the case for inattentive riders who forget their responsibilities while on the road. The following are some tips that beginners can put to use when hitting the open road. n Gear up and stay geared up. Beginners often don’t have a problem gearing up, as many are understandably nervous and therefore less likely to leave necessary equipment in the garage. Always wear a helmet, motorcycle jacket, riding gloves, riding boots and motorcycle pants when riding. Many riders fall into the trap of wearing less gear once they become more acclimated to their bike. But gear should be worn whether you have been riding for 50 days or 50 years. n Prepare, prepare, prepare. There’s no such thing as too much preparation when riding a motorcycle. Motorcycle training guides are valuable tools of information for beginners. These instructional videos or reading materials provide insight into all aspects of riding a motorcycle, and no beginner should get on a motorcycle without first watching or reading a motorcycle training guide.
