Another season has arrived and the KBTX Sports Team can’t wait. Cody Coil has been working on the Smith Dairy Queens’ Friday Football Fever Magazine for the last three months with a little help from John Wilson and Jake Kobersky. Back in June we were able to get the stars to align allowing us to get A&M Consolidated’s Josh Ellison, College Station’s Brandon Joseph, Huntsville’s T’Vondre Sweat, and Burton’s De’Monderick Winters to gather for our annual magazine cover shoot. The quartet are expected to lead the way as Division I signees from the Brazos Valley in December and February. Several Brazos Valley teams have changed coaches over the last 9 months, but our fall football roster here at KBTX Media remains intact for a third straight year. John Wilson, Cody Coil, and Jake Kobersky will be back on the sidelines again with live reports during our 6 and 10 pm Friday evening newscasts. That’s 69 years of broadcasting experience that makes KBTX one of the most established Sports Departments in the state! Our coverage will kick off Friday evenings at 6 p.m. with live reports from Cody, John, and Jake, and then at 10:15 p.m. we’ll check back for highlights from our sideline trio and let you know how other area teams are doing during Big Game Friday Night. Allen Academy returned to varsity football with a three win season. The Rams started strong with a pair of wins in their first two games, but dropped five of their final six games in which they fielded a team. Allen Academy had to forfeit their last two games because they did not have enough healthy players.

The Rams welcome a new head coach to the fold for the 2018 season in Adrian Adams. Adams coached nine years at Emery/Weiner, leading the school to the 2015 TAPPS Division I state championship. Adams will implement a no-huddle offense and a 2-3-1 defense. “I think a new scheme on both sides of the ball will give us an advantage. We will look to play a faster pace. With the faster pace in mind we will need to have great conditioning throughout the season,” said Adams. He will see four starters return on both offense and Photo: Allen Academy defense. “Our backfield will be solid with Brandon Boyd moving to quarterback HB/DL Sam Dawson and Brent Tucker playing running back full-time. We also have some capable wide receivers in sophomores Aaron Boegner and Sam Deupree. Sophomore Ryan Hassell will be a playmaker at middle linebacker. On the defensive line senior Sam Dawson and freshman Luke Meadows are strong upfront. Senior Brandon Boyd with sophomores Brent Tucker, Aaron Boegner, and Dylan Scott will be in rotation in the secondary,” Adams said. The Rams competed well early when they had numbers a year ago, and hope to improve further in 2018. “The team is fairly young with only two seniors in 2018. We’ve added some guys that didn’t play last year. The players learned the new schemes quickly this spring. We plan to compete daily in practices and games. I think if we can stay healthy we can surprise people and contend for a playoff spot in our district. Our number one goal is to improve each day throughout the season.” Allen Academy plays four non-district games, two against 2017 playoff teams in Buckholts and Temple Holy Trinity and two against one-win teams in Austin Achieve and East Texas Christian. Then district play arrives at home against Spring Providence. “Our toughest game should be the last one of the season in district against Alpha Omega. And, for the first time we’ll be playing Bryan St. Joseph in six-man which I think will be a great rivalry game for years to come,” Adams said.

Buffalo went 55 years between their first and second playoff wins, but only had to wait one season between wins two and three. The Bison turned in one of the best seasons in school history, winning 10 games and reaching the area round of the playoffs for the second year in a row. Assistant coach Evan Stone said, “We established a strong offensive and defensive attack from a mature young group from the previous season. The junior and sophomore class contributed many dynamic skilled kids with some reliable big boys up front.” The team started the 9-0, but came up shy of a district title with a loss to Hearne in the regular season finale.

The Bison welcome a new head coach to Buffalo in former Rockdale offensive coordinator Brandon Houston. He takes over for Gary Grubbs, who went 24-21 in four seasons at Buffalo. Houston will have a solid team for his head coaching debut, as the Bison return a number of starters that earned all-district accolades a year ago. Dual-threat Colton Green is back under center, and the Bison get 1,000 yard rusher Hector Dominguez back from injury as well. The defense is headed by end Chase Thompson, who was the district defensive MVP as a junior. The Trojans welcome their fifth head coach in the past five seasons, but this one may stick around a while. Former Calvert great Ja’Marcus Ashley was promoted from assistant to head coach for 2018, replacing Chris Bennett. The Trojans have a new coach, but the same high expectations. “The expectations are set for us to have a great season. We’re going to give it all we have with the potential dream of playing in Arlington, Texas,” said Ashley. Calvert has a trio of two-way starters returning in James Green Jr., Matthew Steamer Jr., and QB/CB James Green Jr. Ja’Cobe Schells. “Green and Steamer will be utilized as utility backs, exploiting favorable advantages every Friday night,” said Ashley. “Darrius Brooks, Schells, Steamer, Tre’Quinton Green, Billy Thompson, James Green and Christopher Edwards have had the opportunity to grow within our program and should demonstrate great growth on defense.” Ashley feels good about his team as a whole, especially their versatility. “We have the athletes to adjust and matchup across the board with anyone in the state. But we must improve our fundamentals. Talent is a waste when one can’t consistently demonstrate the basics of the game.” Calvert has a difficult schedule lined up once again in 2018. “We are set to play the No. 3 and No. 4 ranked teams in Division I in Coolidge and Milford. The Trojans put together another solid season, claiming a district championship and reaching the playoffs. Calvert’s lone regular season loss was to eventual 1A D1 state champion Borden County, and their season ended in a bit of an upset loss to Oakwood in the bi-district round. As exciting as the games were, the practices were also memorable. “The best part of our season had to be the practices,” said new Calvert head coach Ja’Marcus Ashley. “Our athletes were ultra-competitive against each other week in and week out. The biggest challenge we faced was being plagued by injuries throughout the season that hindered our potential as the season progressed.”

The Yoemen return five starters on defense and six on offense as they look to return to the top of the district standings. “We expect to make another run deep in the playoffs and see if we can win another state championship,” said Brashear. Senior Anthony Layne and junior Braden Brashear will look to replace two-year starter Zack Andress as the starting quarterback. Brashear says look out for running back Davion Bynaum who is a “big-play threat,” leading returning receiver Ki’Zirrius Holt, receiver Kadrian Hammond, and running back Nico Vargas. Vargas led the team in tackles a year ago and is a player to watch on defense. He teams up WR Ki’Zirrius Holt with Jale Walzel, Pat England, and Ulices Cardona as part a very experienced foursome returning at linebacker. According to Brashear, the Yoemen will be able to count on improved offensive and defensive line play this season, but must improve their leadership on the field. The Yoemen open the season against a trio of 4A schools in Mexia, Gatesville, and Giddings. “Mexia will be the toughest pre-district game,” said Brashear. “The toughest district game, and the game we will be looking forward to most, is Rockdale.” The winner of the Yoemen and Tigers game will likely have the inside track at the 10-3A D1 title.

The Yoemen had their worst season in a decade, falling from 11 wins to four, but still reached the playoffs for the eighth year in a row. Cameron won its season opener against Bellville, but lost their next five games. The Yoemen bounced back with wins in three of their final four games to reach the postseason, but fell to Teague in the bi-district round. “Our biggest challenge was keeping our kids positive after losing so many close games,” said head coach Tommy Brashear. Yoe lost five games by seven points or less.

Consistency has been the name of the game for the Centerville Tigers under Kyle Hardee. After a state semifinal run in 2016, the Tigers made another deep run in 2017, falling to San Augustine in the state-quarterfinals. Hardee said, “Watching the team get better throughout the season and advancing to the fourth round was the best part of the season. Our biggest challenges were trying to gain momentum early in the season against tough competition and having to overcome injuries late in the year.”

Depth will be light; meaning much of 2018’s success will depend on how healthy the roster can stay. If they stay healthy, expect the Tigers to compete for a district championship. A tough non-district slate should get them ready. Four out of five non-district opponents on Centerville’s schedule made the playoffs in 2017, including the San Augustine team that ended the Tigers season a year ago. “Our schedule will be extremely tough this season,” said Hardee. “Our hope is that this tough schedule will prepare us for a very challenging district.”

College Station welcomes back four starters on offense, four more on defense, and reliable kicker Alan Guerreri as they look to defend their state title. Brandon Williams will step in for Marquez Perez at quarterback and has a pair of linemen returning in Logan Flasowski and Xavion Lewis. Head coach Steve Huff lists the offensive line as big team strength, along with the secondary on defense led by Brandon Joseph. Class 5A is split before the playoffs for the first time this season, and the Cougars are in District 8 of Division I and will likely contend with Lufkin, Magnolia, and Magnolia West for the title. The tough non-district slate includes Richmond Foster, (a 5A D1 quarterfinalist in 2017) Huntsville (20-5A district champ) and Nuevo Leon Mexico. The Cougars have to replace a lot of experienced seniors, but have the talent coming back to book another postseason trip.

A very young group of Cougars struggled through a difficult season, picking up just two wins after getting nine the year before. “Youth and inexperience were our biggest challenges,” said head coach Jeremy Colvert. “We were basically a JV team.” Leon did get a blowout win over Axtell on Homecoming night, and won a close district contest over Anderson-Shiro 7-6.

With experience under their belts, the Cougars should be back in the playoff mix in 2018. “Due to youth last season many kids got to see playing time, so experience will be a strength for us this year,” said Colvert. Nine starters return on offense and nine are back on defense. Peyton Pruett returns under center for his third year in the spread attack employed by Colvert, and has a trio of great targets to throw to in Keaton Caveness, Justin Massey, and Harris Sherrod. “Caveness is a tall Photo: KBTX Sports receiver with good hands. Massey had a QB Peyton Pruett great 2017 season, and Sherrod is a shifty playmaker.” Players to watch on defense include Curtis Stanford at linebacker and Nick Ucci and Aron Orndorff on the line. “Stanford was the defensive newcomer of the year in the district a year ago, while Ucci is big and tall with decent speed and a great motor and Orndorff is big, strong and hard to move,” said Colvert. The Cougars have a tough schedule ahead of them with games against the likes of Bremond, Lovelady, Kerens and Centerville, but Colvert thinks his team is ready to make big strides. “We expect to challenge for a district championship, make the playoffs, and play over Thanksgiving. We are looking forward to week one against Mildred to see where we are, and it should be fun to renew the Leon/Centerville rivalry in a game that falls on the final week of the season.”

Caleb Schneider moves to quarterback this season after starting on the defensive line a year ago. He will have a trio of solid linemen back to LG JD Williams block for him on the left side in Ryan Johnson and JD Williams and Trey Phillippi at right tackle. Bolfing said Johnson, “Has good size and great quickness.” Daniel Dobis will get a look at halfback after catching 44 passes out of the backfield as fullback a year ago. “He can do it all, running, catching and blocking,” said Bolfing. The defense will look to nose guard Wesley May for leadership. “He will anchor our defense. And Conner Wilson has a great deal of knowledge at free safety,” Bolfing said. From securing the Battle of the Bell to overcoming injuries and storming back to beat Brock for the Class 3A Division I State Championship, the 2017 Rockdale Tigers checked every box and more en-route to a history making season. The Tigers had to overcome some injuries early in the season and lost two of their first three games, but turned it on after that. After a loss at Franklin the Tigers refocused and went on a seven-game winning streak to close to season, culminating with a state title. Rockdale trailed Brock 21-0 in the second quarter of the championship game, but outscored the Eagles 45-8 the rest of the way on the way to the second state title in program history.

After finally getting over the title hump, head coach Jeff Miller’s next challenge will be figuring out how to replace five college signees, including Oklahoma’s JaQuaylin Crawford and Kansas’ Torry Locklin. The Tigers will return only nine starters, with four on offense and five on defense. Many skill position spots must be filled, but that’s not the case in the trenches. Miller said, “Our biggest strength this season will be on the defensive and offensive line. We will need to improve our speed.” Those replacements won’t have much time to get acclimated. DL Cayden McBride The Tigers sport another competitive slate in 2018, with non-district bouts against 4A’s Giddings and Caldwell to open the year. 3A-DII state-quarterfinalist, Lexington, pays a visit week three, while the toughest district tests will be at rival Cameron Yoe and at Lago Vista. “We expect to reach the playoffs and go at least two to three rounds deep,” said Miller.

2018 OUTLOOK
Coming off their third trip to the FCS final four in the past four seasons the Bearkats are still looking to break through and reach the national championship game. To do it this season, they’ll have to replace two of the best that ever put on the orange and white in quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe and defensive lineman P.J. Hall. The cupboard is far from bare, and the Bearkats should be in the mix to win the Southland conference and make an eighth straight trip to the FCS playoffs.
