Itisinterestingtonotethe reasonthisbridgeiscalled theFreeBridge.Initially, therewereonlylimitedferriestocrosstheMerrimack RiverinConcordandthey wereownedprivatelybyinvestors.Investmentsneeded tomakeaprofitandthere wasacostassociatedwith crossingtheriverinthe ferry.WithcoldNewHampshireweather,theferrywas attimeschallengingandthe investorsdecidedtobuilda bridge,nearourcurrent BridgeStreet(Loudon Road)bridgethatcrossesthe Merrimacktoday,though notontheexactlocation,it

waswithinyardsofthepresentbridge.

Thenewbridgealsorequiredyoutopayatollto cross,satisfyingtheowners andprovidinganicelittle profit.TheMinisteratthe NorthChurch(thepresent locationoftheoldWalker School)becameconcerned atonepointwhenhefound attendanceonthedayof Sabbathtobelacking,people werenotattendinghis Sundayservice.

Thegoodministerspoke tohiscongregationand foundpeoplewerenotat-

tendingonSundaybecause theycouldnotaffordtopay thetollatthebridgetocross fromtheeastsideoftheMerrimackRivertothewestside wherethechurchwaslocated.Theministerthought aboutthisanddecidedtoapproachthepoliticiansatcity hall,certainlytheymightbe abletohelp.TheConcordselectmenlistenedtothegood ministerandworkedtoresolvetheissue.Theyspoke tothepeoplewhoownedthe bridgeandaskedforfree passageonlyonSunday,the investorscounteroffered andaskedthecityofConcordtopayaflatannualfee, thiswouldallowthebridge tobeopenandfreeonlyon Sundays.

Thisworkedquitewellfor sometime,theministerwas pleasedandthepeopleloved theideaofafreebridge withouttolls.Infact,the peoplelovedthisideaso muchthattheyaskedthe politicianswhythebridge

couldnotbefreeeveryday oftheyear,justlikeitwas eachSunday.

Thepoliticiansthought aboutthisandvotedtopurchasethebridgefromtheinvestors,allowingeveryone totravelacrossthebridgeall yearlongwithouttolls.The

investorssetapriceandthe cityofConcordbecamethe newownersofthebridge.

Fromthedaythecitypurchasedthebridge,itremainedfree,hencethename ofthebridgebecameknown asthe“FreeBridge”from thattimeforward.
