Itisinterestingtonotethe reasonthisbridgeiscalled theFreeBridge.Initially, therewereonlylimitedferriestocrosstheMerrimack RiverinConcordandthey wereownedprivatelybyinvestors.Investmentsneeded tomakeaprofitandthere wasacostassociatedwith crossingtheriverinthe ferry.WithcoldNewHampshireweather,theferrywas attimeschallengingandthe investorsdecidedtobuilda bridge,nearourcurrent BridgeStreet(Loudon Road)bridgethatcrossesthe Merrimacktoday,though notontheexactlocation,it

waswithinyardsofthepresentbridge.
