A good book for under the tree Our friends at MainStreet Bookends in Warner offer suggestions

By KATHARINE NEVINS

MainStreet BookEnds of Warner

Here are some local and global recommendations for children and adults as you top off your holiday shopping.

Fellowship Point

The Myth of Normal

By Alice Elliott Dark This is my favorite fiction of the season. Several Quaker Philadelphia families have maintained the homes and wilderness of an idyllic Maine peninsula over hundreds of years, but times and pressures are changing fast. Relatable and fascinating characters, focusing on the lifelong friendship of two women now in their eighties. Beautifully written, chock full of honesty, humor and wisdom.

By Gabor Maté, MD, Daniel Maté This best-selling author on childhood development, addictions, and stress takes on the big picture of what we have come to view as “normal” in a fundamentally sick society. Increasing illness, both physical and mental, can be traced to personal trauma but also more deeply to the toxic nature of our materialistic, isolating, patriarchal, and racist culture. He stresses the need to return to a compassionate and whole-person-based healthcare system, to break down the myths that keep making us sicker and further isolated from each other.

THE GIFT OF READING

The Mediterranean Dish: 120 Bold and Healthy Recipes By Suzy Karadsheh This wonderful new cookbook offers recipes that are clear and accessible, to help us create the wonderfully healthy meals from the Mediterranean regions. Stock up on vegetables, olive oil and garlic!

This Story Is Not About a Kitten

Randall de Sève, Carson Ellis (Illustrator) I just love everything about this picture book, from the illustrations from award-winning artist Carson Ellis, to the uplifting story of a community coming together for a kitten…with the punchline, of course, being that this story IS about caring for each other.

A Beginner’s Guide to Being Human

By Matt Forrest Esenwine, André Ceolin (Illustrator) What greater work do we have ahead of us but to learn what it means to be human, and to help others along the way. There are wonderful examples throughout the book of compassion, kindness and thoughtfulness, and above all forgiveness of others and ourselves. Matt is one of our illustrious authors from Warner, with this his newest picture book for children about important concepts.

THE GIFT OF READING

At the Pond By David Elliott, Amy SchimlerSafford (Illustrator) Warner is also the hometown for David Elliott, best-selling children’s author of picture books and young adult fiction, mostly all told in verse. This is the latest nature-poetry picture book from David, with gorgeous illustrations, about a world that is right within walking distance for the little ones to explore. Beautiful images and lyrical words to remember and to be part of a child’s library.

The Anxiety Audit By Lynn Lyons, LICSW One of our very own psychotherapists with a practice here in Concord, Lynn has been highly sought after over the years as an expert on breaking the anxiety cycles within families. This follows her first, Anxious Kids, Anxious Parents, and identifies the many forms anxiety can take in our day-to-day lives; worrying, isolating, disconnecting from others, creating chaos, irritability , and self-medicating. Here she provides steps to reverse the anxiety cycle.

The sweetest tour of all Participants happy to pick up cookies along the route By ASHLEY SAARI

Monadnock Ledger-Transcript

Each year, the Currier and Ives Cookie Tour provides the opportunity for participants to travel the Monadnock region, try various types of Christmas cookies, expand their recipe boxes and get in some Christmas shopping as they visit the various vendors along the tour route. For the cost of a $20 ticket, residents have the opportunity to visit each of the 14 stops on the tour on Dec. 10, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Try a cookie and get a card with the recipe for that cookie, so you can recreate your favorites at home. The tour also acts as a fundraiser for the Hundred Nights Shelter in Keene, which provides “shelter and crisis related services to those COURTESY at risk of or experiencing homeMaria Pappas-Donati, right, hands out cookies and cider to customers on the Currier and Ives Cookie Tour last year lessness,” according to the organi- at New England Everyday Goods in Jaffrey. zation’s website, is the recipient.

COOKIE TOUR Jim Therriault, owner of New England Everyday Goods in Jaffrey, mans one of the stops on the tour, and has since 2015. The tour has become a beloved yearly event for many families that take the tour. “For many families, it’s become a tradition for them,” Therriault said. “They get to explore the region, and at the end of the day, they know a majority of the proceeds go to a good cause.” Last year, New England Everyday Goods boasted a maple chocolate chip cookie, but Therriault expects that this year, as in the years before, they’ll have a new recipe to share with visitors. “We haven’t determined what we’re doing this year, but it’ll be something new – we try not to duplicate,” Therriault said. Cyndi Babin, owner of Wildflowers Country Gift Shop in New Ipswich, said this will be her second year on the tour. Her previous offering was a gluten-free chocolate chip cookie. The recipe has been adapted from a childhood recipe, Babin said, and made gluten-free after she and her daughter adopted a gluten-free diet 15 years ago. “A lot of people were happy to see a glutenfree option, so I might do that again this year,” Babin said. This year’s tour includes 14 stops throughout Troy, Fitzwilliam, Rindge, Jaffrey, New Ipswich and Marlborough. Participants who visit at

least 10 stops on the tour are entered to win a gift certificate valued at more than $100, which can be redeemed at any participating location on the tour. Tickets for the event are $20, and can be purchased with cash only at The Inn at East Hill Farm in Troy, New England Everyday Goods in Jaffrey, or the Woodbound Inn in Rindge. Visit currierandivescookietour.com for information about this event, including a full list of participants.

New England Everyday Goods’ ginger molasses cookie recipe ¾ cup softened butter or margarine 1 cup dark brown sugar, firmly packed ¼ cup molasses 1 large egg 2 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon ginger root powder ½ ground cloves ¼ teaspoon salt 2 ¼ cups sifted all-purpose flour Coarse granulated sugar Cream butter and gradually add brown sugar. Blend in molasses and egg thoroughly. Add all dry ingredients except flour and mix completely. Add flour three-quarters of a cup at a time, mixing well after each addition. When dough is fully combined, cover tightly and refrigerate for at least one hour.

COURTESY

Ginger maple cookies.

Form dough into one-inch balls and roll the tops in coarse granulated sugar. Arrange balls three inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Bake cookies in a 375-degree oven for seven to eight minutes. (Shorter baking time produces a chewy cookie; longer time makes them more like a crisp gingersnap.) Remove cookies from sheet and cool on wax paper. Store cookies in an airtight container for up to a week. This recipe was a participant favorite in a prior year on the Currier and Ives Cookie Tour. New England Everyday Goods will have a new cookie and recipe card for visitors this December.
