Inspired

to Higher Education by Olivia Cane

Cambridge dictionary defines the word inspiration as, “someone or something that give you ideas for doing something.” Its root meaning is to “breath into.” In the case of Chevella Sampson, a hairstylist of ten years, that breath of inspiration came to her during a deeply moving spiritual transformation. “The Lord placed on my heart the urge to dig deeper,” she explained. “He called on me to study His word.” At the time, she didn’t know how God wanted her to do that. “Yet I was inspired to go to church one morning,” Chevella explains. “there I met a Belhaven University representative who told me that no matter what your course of study, Belhaven will teach you the word of Christ. I could actually feel God speaking to me.” “I was nervous. I hadn’t been in school for 25 years,” continues Chevella. “Would I be accepted How was I going to manage books, tuition, financial aid? But I wanted to learn more about the Bible, and I knew in my heart that the Christ-based curriculum at Belhaven was the right place for me. Then I called a Belhaven University counselor. It was like she completed my thoughts! All my fears were instantly put to rest. The staff made it so easy. Financial aid was available to me even before God promised me it would be. I

was overjoyed – and most importantly, I knew this was where I belonged.” Today, Chevella has been at Belhaven for two years. “Everybody seems like family They know your name and they want you to succeed. My professors have an open-door policy. If you need guidance, guidance will be provided to you. But it’s the Biblical perspective that’s super important. It doesn’t matter how smart you are or how much you’ve got it together –or even if you don’t have it together. Having a Biblical perspective in your education not only allows you to expand your career, it fulfills a purpose in life no matter what talent you have. Talent is no good without purpose. And your purpose is to know the word of Christ.” For Houston residents who want to complete a bachelor’s or master’s degree quickly and affordably, Belhaven University is the answer to a quality adult studies program. Both degree programs are tailored to the needs of busy working adults. Belhaven students graduate with the tools they need to stay competitive in today’s global economy, and they do it with all the love and support of the word of God. “Belhaven is everything you expect in a God-inspired learning environment,” Chevella says. “You will feel so at home here.”

“Everybody seems like ”

6 Bible Trivia 9 The Antidote to the Weariness of Motherhood 15 Pastor Profile: Tim Barker of Katy Community Fellowship 18 A Christian Childcare Family For You 25 Prayer Requests 26 2018 Health & Wellness Guide 30 12 Ways to Cut Costs On One Income 35 Charles Johnson: A Christian Conservative for Judge 40 Katy & Bend 41 The Buzz About Katy 45 Letting Kids Stumble 50 The Third Annual Golf “Fore” Autism Tournament 53 How to Empower Your Kids Against Bullies 62 2018 Christian Voter Guide 68 Commissioner Jack Cagle: A Caretaker for a Season 71 Health & Nutrition Quiz 73 Dear Doctor: Living With Neurosarcoidosis

Over the years, many people have asked us why we publish a Voter’s Guide in our magazines. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been told, “Christians shouldn’t be involved in politics.” At times, Christians are tempted by despair. We wonder if it’s even worthwhile to vote, if the politicians and the programs offered are even worth engaging in. Perhaps it’s better to simply sit out an election? Others wonder if, by voting, they are usurping the sovereignty of a God who works through the affairs of men to put in power whom he will (Rom. 13:1; Dan. 2:21; Psa. 75:7). I understand the temptation toward disengagement in the voting process, but I believe Christians should make their voices heard. Here are 10 reasons why we, as Christians, should make it a priority to participate in the voting process: 1. Voting publicly recognizes that we submit to the authority of the political system in our nation as established by God. (Rom. 13:1-7) 2. Voting recognizes the equality of all people and their right to speak and be heard. (Deut. 10:17-19) 3. It is one way that we can obey God’s command to seek the good of those around us and our nation as a whole. (Jer. 29:5-6) 4. It shows that we care deeply about who our leaders are as we are urged to offer prayer and intercession on their behalf. (1 Tim. 2:1-2) 5. It is a simple yet significant way we can do something about politics in our nation. ‘All that is required for evil to prevail is for good men to do nothing’, Edmund Burke. (Psalms 34:14) 6. It makes a difference the way a grain of salt makes a difference, and that is how we are to influence our society for good. (Matt. 5:13) 7. It is a privilege not to be taken for granted. Those of us who reap the benefits of living in a democracy should play a part in upholding democracy. 8. Not voting is a form of voting, as it will influence the outcome. We need to take responsibility for our actions, as well as our lack of actions. (Luke 10:25-37) 9. Voting has biblical precedence for example Acts 14:23 describes that the early Christians elected elders by voting. 10. Voting is part of our stewardship to use all the resources we have been given in ways that honor God; to waste a vote is to squander a gift. As a Christian publication, one of the primary factors that determines whether we endorse a candidate or not is their stance on Pro-Life issues. Another is their view on the sanctity of marriage. We feel the candidates that we endorse should best represent the views and values closest to that of our readership.

The Antidote to the Weariness of Motherhood By Jordan Harrell You guys. It happened. I’m sitting here under the awning of a coffee shop patio drinking water, only because I’ve already had two cups of coffee. And I’m by myself. Like, no child is near me. Well, scratch that. There is a toddler crying a few feet away from me, but the beauty is that calming her is not my responsibility. I dropped my three kids at school this morning. The first-grader I let out at the elementary school; the five and three-yearold went to preschool; then, I went to a coffee shop to write. And now I’m sitting here without anyone climbing on my back, or asking me if they can have a snack, or stealing my phone, or whining about … anything. I feel amazingly free and creeped out all at the same time. I watch that woman a couple tables over from me with her toddler strapped tightly

into the stroller, sipping on her coffee, attempting to feel like a real human-being for just a few seconds, and I want to reach out to her and give her a hug because she’s sporting the I-gottwo-hours-of-sleep-last-night look. I know that look. I wore that look for six years. Yet, here I am, sitting in a coffee shop by myself just barely on the other side of it. As in, a week. Here I am enjoying freedom and missing my babies and basking in silence and wanting to snuggle them. Here I am not listening to my child cry and so (SO) thankful, but also a little bit jealous of that toddler’s chubby hands and tiny ponytail atop the crown of her bobblehead. I wouldn’t dare say “It goes by so fast” or “Soak it up” or anything equally trite, because God knows, in those moments that’s the last thing you want or need to hear. While it does go by so fast, I don’t think it’s possible to soak it up. I think for most of us, the best we can do is go a day at a time. In those early years when we’re so sleep deprived and our weary bones are putt-putting on goldfish fumes and PB&J crusts, when we’re literally just trying to keep little people from being run over by cars or eating poison or slicing their heads open on the corner of the fireplace, there is no such thing as soaking it up. There is only gratitude. So if it weren’t completely awkward of me, I’d walk over to that sweet mama and tell her this. Tonight, after you’ve put the kids to bed and you’ve finally sat your tired behind on the couch only to ruminate over all the mistakes you made throughout the day, take a deep breath, and go into their rooms. Stand over them as they lie peaceful and still (for once), watch their breath move their tiny chest up and down, up and down. Do not touch

them. I repeat: no touching allowed. But breathe in their littleness. Take a mental snapshot of their tiny hands, untouched skin, pursed lips. And thank God for the gift of that child. You didn’t have a perfect day. You probably yelled once or twice. Patience is not always easy to come by in these parts. But you hugged them. You kissed them. You loved them as only you can love them, because you are their mama. God chose you. What a gift motherhood is, even in the messy, mundane, long days of the trenches. It’s hard to see, sometimes, isn’t it? It’s hard to find gratitude when your brain is overstimulated by shouts and crashes all day long, when your trying to get to at least one place on time for once, and you are responsible for dressing and combing and bathing and … and … and … Sometimes, in the messiest months of motherhood we forget to make space for gratitude because all we have space for is survival. But in the still of night, in the eerie calm of a busy home, it’s much easier to see our motherhood for what it is: good and blessed. It’s much easier to find gratitude for what God has so graciously placed in our hands. Tomorrow will be another long day. You will make mistakes. You won’t get it right every time, and neither will I. You might get flustered and annoyed and wonder if you’re the right woman for the job (you are, by the way). But in the dark, let God take your hand and lead you back to the good parts of the day, the good parts of your home, and thank him for the gift of those little slumbering bodies.

Pastor Profile: Tim Barker of Katy Community Fellowship By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein At Katy Community Fellowship, if you believe in the power of prayer, you’ve come to the right place. Pastor Tim Barker makes prayer a central focus of his work days, his church services, and his free time, and this is reflected in the close relationships he shares with members of his congregation. He asks church members to submit prayer requests during the offerings each Sunday, and he prays for them every single day. This helps him to know what is going on in the lives of the people he sees every week and reinforces the prayer lives of everyone in the congregation. Katy Community Fellowship has 600 members and about 450 attend regularly. Members dress casually and comfortably for the services, which tend to be contemporary in nature. The church is open to everyone and is Bible-believing, preaching, and teaching. Barker started the church in 1999 with his wife, Polly, in a growing community. They saw it as an opportunity to reach a new group of people and they were right - church members represent 17 different nationalities, a range of ages, and diversity across the board.

Barker understood the power of prayer and wanted to bring it to this new church community. He explained, “We’re a church that focuses on prayer; in fact, we have one service on Wednesday evening devoted solely to prayer, no teaching or preaching. We pray for our community and revival in our nation. During our hour or more together, we pray as a corporate body, in small groups, individually, and handin-hand with people coming in for prayer.” Born into a pastor’s family both his father and grandfather pastored churches - Barker knew as a teenager that he wanted to follow in his patriarchs’ footsteps. He’s been in the ministry for 30 years and has pastored Katy Community Fellowship for the last 18 years. His wife started and currently works with the Children’s Ministry, which Barker believes is a crucial program for the church. Promiseland caters its services to the youth, who are encouraged to bring friends to Sunday service. “Family and community are big parts of what we do. Our Katy Community Fellowship Home Center is devoted to helping people in all walks of life: marriages, young parents, grandparents, and singles. We provide resources and work with young families through all of the stepping stones of their spiritual journey.” Having been in Katy for 31 years, Barker and his wife are imbedded in the community. It should come as no surprise that Barker most values the contributions he is able to make through prayer. He is a member of The Katy Church, a group of pastors that prays together every week. They pray for each other and the city and community leaders,

and they’ve even hosted the Chief of Police, mayor, and school superintendent and prayed over them. “Our job is to be the House of Prayer. We take that seriously. We pray for our adopted nation of India and for people all over the world. We understand the power of prayer and the necessity of it. We’re for everyone, not just our own church. We believe in community - it’s our middle name.” For more information about Katy Community Fellowship, visit www.katyfellowship.com or visit services at 8:51 or 10:36 (to correspond with the Psalms passages). Children’s and student services are offered during both times. Or attend the prayer service every Wednesday at 7:00 pm.

A Christian Childcare Family For You By Caitlin Richards The harsh reality for working parents is that the majority of your children’s days are spent away from home and yourselves. It can be tough to find a childcare provider who loves your children as their own. At Stairway to Heaven Childcare, parents will find that and much more! “We are a Christian childcare center,” Stairway to Heaven Owner and Founder Shintell Bartley said. “I think this is one of the things that sets us apart. We are also big on education and safety.” At Stairway to Heaven, kids experience God’s love through nurturing, highly-skilled teachers and are taught it through the Christian-based curriculum. Starting at six weeks of age all the way to 12 years-old, Stairway to Heaven’s children are educated using the Abeka Children’s Curriculum, which incorporates cornerstone Christian values along with foundational educational principles. “They learn scripture and we teach them about Christ through songs and Bible stories,” Shintell said. “They will also be ready to go to school, but most importantly they will have knowledge of who God is. So they can continue in their journey through life in a positive manner.” Shintell founded Stairway to Heaven in her home in 2013. While she didn’t use a formal curriculum then, she was still teaching children

about Christ and his love. After a few years of operating in her home, the waitlist for her childcare services became so long that Shintell decided her next move was to open a childcare center. “I opened this center in March of 2018,” Shintell said. “I am in this because God has called me to it and I have a message for children and

their families.” Shintell’s lifelong passion for childcare is so powerful that she views her work as a ministry. A ministry, she said, that God called her to at a young age. However, it wasn’t until after her battle with cancer that she listened to the call and began Stairway to Heaven. “They gave me four to six months to live,” Shintell said. “I had stage five Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I have now been cancer free for eight years. After I went into remission, I felt God continuing to put it on my mind and showing me the vision of doing childcare.” Now held in an actual center, Shintell is able to expand her outreach and touch the lives of even more children and their families. At Stairway to Heaven, Shintell and the teachers genuinely care about benefiting the children and families they serve. One way they

strive to lighten the parental workload is simple: offering homework help. “One of my goals is to make life easier for parents,” Shintell said. “We all get into this routine of going to work, picking up the kids, making dinner, checking homework, giving baths, and then going to bed. Parents don’t have the opportunity to spend time with their children. That is not how we are going to be able to build strong families.” The teachers at Stairway to Heaven make a special effort to ensure their students get the majority of their homework assignments done before their parents arrive to pick them up. Stairway to Heaven feels like this act, while simple in nature, benefits both children and their parents alike. Stairway to Heaven offers before and after school childcare services for students at Cimarron Elementary School, Exley Elementary School, Memorial Parkway Elementary School

and West Memorial Elementary School. Located at 21950 Kingsland Blvd., Stairway to Heaven is a central location to serve these schools in the Katy community. To aid working parents even more, Stairway to Heaven aspires to offer childcare 24 hours a day and six days a week. Shintell reports that she is currently building a list of families who are interested in these services, to confirm that the communal need exists first. At Stairway to Heaven, students are divided into different classes based on age: “movers and shakers” are ages six weeks to 23 months, “stair steppers” are two-year-olds, “great leapers: are three-year-olds, and “adventurers” are four-year-olds. Finally, the before and after school students make up the “brainy bunch.” In addition to their Christian education, students also engage in outdoor playtime and have the opportunity to participate in extracurricular activities. Currently, children can participate gymnastics, but Stairway to Heaven hopes to offer rugby, ballet, tap and hip-hop dance soon. “We want our children to be well-rounded and whole,” Shintell said. “That means in health and fitness too. So many kids are into

technology and it is a great thing, but there has to be a balance. So, we want to keep them active and incorporate other activities that will allow them to do that.” Even though Shintell isn’t from the Katy area, she and her family feel right at home here in the Katy community. She has enjoyed serving the families of Katy so much so that the families at Stairway to Heaven have become her own family. “We are a family full of love at Stairway to Heaven,” Shintell said. “We are all family here. From the moment you walk through our doors, you are part of this great, big family.” Interested parents are welcome to stop in to find out more about enrollment and tour Stairway to Heaven’s facility. “We want the parents to feel like we are a family and they are not just a number,” Shintell said. “We are not just a business. We aren’t just babysitting your children either. We are actually nurturing them.” stairway-to-heaven-childcare-katy.site.datasphere.com Stairway To Heaven 24/6 childcare

12 Ways to Cut Costs On One Income By Jordan Harrell When Clark and I first decided that I was going to stay home, he didn’t have a job. He had just graduated from college and I had been our sole provider for two years. But I desperately wanted to stay home with Charlee so we began trying to figure out how we could financially make that possible. Four years later, we are entering into our first year of feeling like we can breathe a little, where finances aren’t quite so tight, and we might even be able to splurge some. But before those number-crunching days are too far behind me, I thought I’d offer some encouragement and advice to those currently in the throes of (or just considering) a one-income household. Disclaimer: I wanted to stay home because it was right for me. In no way do I think that it is the best way or only way to raise children. I occasionally think I might want to go back to work, and then I envision getting myself and all three children dressed and out the door by 7 am … and look down at my pajamas I’m still rocking at 3 pm and decide that it’s altogether impossible. All hail to working moms. Y’all are amazing. I also realize that my situation is very different than others’. We don’t have thousands of dollars in student debt or medical bills to worry about. Some people literally can’t afford to stay home. However, if you are wanting to stay home but are nervous about making ends meet or if you already do but are barely scraping by (solidarity, sister), here are a few tips and tricks from someone who has lived on one income all 7 years of marriage. Let’s start by getting a few realities out of the way. I had to come to grips with a few things early on (and pretty much every day since), some of which are really hard and some very relieving. I will not have the cutest _______. Fill in the blank. Clothes.

House. Kids’ clothes. Decor. Hairstyle. When I feel myself “needing” something that I can’t afford, I have to remind myself, “In this season, I will not have the cutest _____. And that’s okay.” Sometimes it feels really important (because Pinterest) but if staying at home is more important, some of those things just can’t be. I am going to have to make some sacrifices. Not just me, but everyone. I am going to have to cook a lot, paint my own nails, buy less presents for Christmas, cut out some “major wants” from our budget. Everyone will still survive. And, dare I say, learn a few valuable lessons

along the way. In the grand scheme, I am pretty rich. It’s really, really easy to look around and think, “everyone has so much more than us”. And lament over all the things we are sacrificing. But I mean, let’s be honest. This article could probably be renamed “First World Problems” because the things we are giving up, are usually not food. This is (most likely) the poorest we will ever be. Barring outliers, most people make more money the older and more experienced they get. So, you might have to make a few sacrifices right now, but it won’t be like this forever. So now that we’ve gotten those basic principles out of the way, let’s get to it. I have wracked my brain to think of all the ways I’ve cut costs the past few years. 1. Drink water. Don’t buy juice, coke, wine, beer, lemonade, tea. I know, I know. It sounds cray, but this is one of the biggest ways I have saved at the grocery store. Drink water. Not only is it healthy, it’s cheap. 2. Buy in bulk. I use Amazon Prime Subscribe and Save. I buy all my non-perishables through them — diapers, wipes, ziplocs, trash bags, toothbrushes, face wash, shampoo, soap, detergent, etc. — and have them shipped to me whenever I need more. You get 15% off your entire order if you order 5+ items (20% off diapers and wipes). Yes, there is a Prime yearly subscription, but if I cut out cable (we’ll get to that in a minute), the Prime shows and movies more than make it worth it. Try the Amazon Prime 30-Day Free Trial. 3. Use cash back for holidays. I know Dave Ramsey would not approve, but we buy everything on credit cards that have rewards programs. Two years ago, I didn’t pay for a single Christmas present. We had accrued enough points to cover all of them. Last year, we

October / November 2018

used them to go on a trip for our anniversary. BUT, that being said… 4. Never pay interest (if at all possible). We pay cash for everything. Pay your credit cards in full every month. When we remodeled our home, we paid cash. When we bought our cars, we paid cash. When we bought a new couch, we paid cash. If you don’t have enough money to buy something, don’t buy it. 5. Buy necessities for holidays. My mom told me this trick. At Christmas, use stocking stuffers to buy things your kids already need — socks, underwear, pacifiers, sippy cups — things you would have bought them anyway. Wam, bam. Two birds. One stone. Merry Christmas. 6. Use gifted money for splurges. This is my chance to splurge on myself. Two years ago, I used my Christmas money to restock my closet. Last year, I used it to redecorate my daughters’ room. This way, nobody questions how much money I am spending and whether or not we can afford it. It’s basically free, right? 7. Do hair care on the cheap. Master Cuts and Family Cuts, y’all. Haters gonna hate, but they do good work. Also, box color. In 5 years, you can spend $150 on a haircut & color. But today is not that day. I promise, you will look stunning with your $15 ‘do. 8. Cut the (cable) cord. It didn’t take us long to realize cable is freaking expensive. Here’s our solution: – pay for wireless only – get a streaming device (we have used AppleTV and FireTV and loved both) – subscribe to Amazon Prime and/or Netflix and/or Hulu (we do Prime and Netflix) – get an antenna for local channels 9. Get rid of stuff. I am always amazed at how much stuff we

For Advertising Information, Call (281) 741-8317 • www.KatyChristianMagazine.com • 31

have. Every time we move (once a year, duh), I end up with boxes and boxes of giveaway items. I’ve made some pretty good #cashmoney at places like Swap.com, Craigslist, and Facebook, but there are also the VarageSale and LetGo apps where I have bought stuff… and speaking of…. 10. Shop second-hand. Here’s the problem. I want my house to look like a high-end magazine. Here’s the second problem … I’m not savvy enough to figure out how to make my house look highend on my low-end budget. My budget is an antique/shabby-chic/ distressed-look budget. So, that’s my style… because that’s my budget. Second-hand shops (specifically the ones mentioned above) are a great place to find home decor. And did you know, a can of spray paint can work wonders. 11. Make a budget. Budget is not a bad word. It’s actually very freeing to be on a budget. Bought a new shirt? Don’t worry hubs! I have a $25 clothing budget this month so I’m actually under budget. No arguing. No accusing. Everybody wins. And guess what? There’s an app for that. Mint.com is the bomb.com. This website/app will allow you to import all credit cards and bank accounts so that you can see all your expenses in one place. You can then create budgets and categorize each expense so that you know how much you are spending on each category each month. It’s also super convenient during tax season to have everything categorized and searchable. If not for any other reason, make a budget so that you can see what you spend most of your money on. 12. Don’t stop giving. Budget tithing and giving first. There’s no better way to be reminded of how much we actually have and how faithful God is than by giving sacrificially. Buy gifts for needy children before your own for Christmas. Sponsor a Compassion child.

It’s amazing how much further your money goes when you steward it well. There is no better way to live by faith, than by trusting that God will take care of you if you take care of his people. I am by no means an expert. I still spend an exorbitant amount on groceries, and I have just given up. I don’t understand coupons. They make me feel stupid and angry.

However, I hope these are helpful. And, please, if you have ways that you save money, I would love to hear them! I am always interested in how other people cut costs! Happy budgeting!

Charles Johnson: Former Houston Texan Player for Judge By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Charles Johnson, by his own description, is a bit of an enigma. He’s African American, a former professional football player, a criminal defense attorney, and running as a conservative in the campaign for the 263rd Judicial Court as District Judge. With his strong Christian roots and conservative politics, he faces a lot of questions and judgements from his peers. “I represent something dangerous to liberals and democrats,” explained Johnson. “I’m not what anyone expects from a black athlete, and as a result, I’ve faced a barrage of criticism. My faith is the only thing that has sustained me through this campaign. An ad I ran in Katy Christian Magazine mentioned that I’m 100 percent pro-life. An opponent actually filed an ethics complaint against me for my expression of freedom of speech and religion. My opponents want to stop me before I can inspire others. But I am free, l love the lord, and I believe in conservative values. I have no desire to be on their plantation. Instead, I will try to free other minds.”

Johnson’s convictions came at a young age and were instilled by his parents. They taught him to “achieve the next thing,” and never to rest on his laurels. At 13, after qualifying for the Duke Program, he

traveled to Austin, where he wandered into the UT School of Law Library and developed an instant fascination with the law. He went on to earn top academic honors, including the National Merit Scholarship and All American status for both track and football. In addition, he earned a full ride football scholarship through college, followed by an offer to play in the NFL. He was drafted by the Denver Broncos, then went on to play for the New York Giants and the Houston Oilers. Despite the fame and fortune, his time in the NFL didn’t change the man he was raised to be. “I was raised on church, prayer, working hard, and striving for the next achievement. I was playing football, but my plan was to go to law school.” Johnson did just that, graduating from the University of Houston Law Center and beginning an 18-year legal career. “As a criminal defense lawyer, I have laid hands on the worst of the worse in our society. They deserve fair representation and a fair trial. But I’ve never taken my eyes off the victims, people who woke up and went about

The Right Choice

their day never knowing they were about to become victims. In this next phase of my career, I want to take my talents and help administer justice for these people.” As Johnson says, he is a believer in our system of checks and balances so that those who regulate us don’t become our rulers. As judge, he hopes to undo what he sees as the damage caused in 2016, when liberals were voted into the Sheriff ’s Department and District Attorney’s Office. His number one priority is to make Harris County a safe place where people have respect for law enforcement. “We need someone who makes the hard choices and stands for something. Tough on crime is definitely better than the liberal bent,” he said. He also hopes to model work ethic and ethics in general to the younger generation. “I believe in the protection of citizenry and enforcement of law. I want to inspire other young black men to be conservative, worship God, and do the right thing - and show them that it’s much more cool than being a part of the culture of vulgarity, death, drugs, and sex. I want them to become successful by working hard.” His upbringing and Christian convictions have inspired him to leave a lucrative job and enter politics, something he had never intended for his life. His message to young people and to the people of Harris County is this: “The battle for the soul of this state and this country is very important to me. The world has winners and losers, but if you work your butt off and don’t complain, blame someone else, or take what someone else has, you’ll win more than you lose. You get to write your own ticket and develop your own destiny.”

Letting Kids Stumble By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein The other day I was perusing Facebook and came across a video of a newly born giraffe attempting to take his first steps. His mother stood above him and watched as he repeatedly teetered on wobbly legs only to fall sideways, backwards, and even flat on his face. Each time, he lay on the ground, catching his breath, and his mother watched and waited. Occasionally she gave him an encouraging lick or a nudge of her head as a show of support, but it was obvious this was something the baby giraffe needed to learn through trial, error, and perseverance. Eventually he did, and if it’s possible for an animal to beam with pride, he did that as well. He happily experimented with his new legs and became more brave and confident with each step. I couldn’t help but root for the little guy and share in his success and joy. As someone who works with kids and parents, I naturally made the connection between giraffe parenting and human parenting. How many of us are willing to stand and watch while our children figure things out on their own, struggle, fail, and keep trying until they succeed? Are we more inclined to pave the path for our

children and try to remove obstacles? Do we jump in before they fail? Do we constantly worry about protecting their self-esteem and warding off hurts and frustrations? Twenty years ago, our nation saw a developing trend toward helicopter parenting that blew up into a form of overprotectiveness which, in hindsight, we realize truly harmed kids. This group of overly coddled children, now young adults, has few coping skills and cannot handle frustrations and roadblocks, thus resulting in a higher number of suicides and much higher rates of anxiety and depression. Because we didn’t want our children to face all the small failures that are part of growth, we created a generation of young people who can’t handle failure at all. We didn’t help them; we massively crippled them. However, parents today are witnessing the damage caused from carrying children, rather than forcing them to walk on their own. Due to this, we are seeing a return to “old school parenting,” where kids join sports teams and take music lessons and plug away at it until they get it right. They practice, put in sweat equity, enjoy small successes that build their self-esteem, and face small failures that build their character, and guess what? They’re growing, maturing, and learning to stand on their own two feet. As we start a new school year, I encourage you to take this proven philosophy and apply it to your children’s learning. I told my own kids as they were growing up that they had one job and that job was school. Make your kids responsible for their own job, and that includes keeping an agenda, putting effort into homework and turning it in on time, studying for tests and quizzes, and taking any concerns or questions they may have to the teacher. Your job is to be there, watching and encouraging, but not interfering. Your job is to teach them personal responsibility and independence. If they make mistakes - and they will

- they must face the consequences in order to learn and do better the next time. Whatever you do, don’t make excuses for children’s lack of responsibility and don’t ask teachers to continually give them another chance. If this means they earned a zero, then help them by discussing their options and how they might avoid any zeroes in the future. If it means they failed a test, help them determine if it was from a lack of understanding or a lack of effort. Provide a support system for the former and consequences for the latter. But don’t try to get a retake or argue that your child deserves a do over. This is where healthy support becomes unhealthy interference, and at this point, you are harming rather than helping your child. If you deprive kids of consequences, you are only crippling them. Better to let them stumble today than to cripple them for a lifetime.

The Third Annual Golf “Fore” Autism Tournament Stafford, TX (August 29, 2018) - Don’t call a ‘mulligan’ on the opportunity to show support and raise funds for Hope For Three, the only non-profit in the Greater Houston area to focus solely on autism and the only non-profit in the Fort Bend County area to provide financial assistance to families in need. The Third Annual Golf “Fore” Autism, presented by Timewise Food Stores, the retail division of Landmark Industries, is set for October 15 at Sweetwater Country Club in Sugar Land. Tee Time is noon with a shotgun start. Play among some “ausome” rookies, golf pros, celebrities and local community members, for a chance to win a commemorative trophy and yearlong bragging rights, all while raising funds to provide more than 3,000 children and families with vital therapies and services that support financial and crucial needs. As autism is no ordinary condition, this golf tournament is not ordinary either. Thanks to great underwriters, Trusted Senior Specialists, Final Expense Direct, Deep Down, Inc., Front Row Signs, Indeavor, JL Wood Electric, Bud Light / Silver Eagle Distributors, Bryan Smink and Off the Vine Bistro, players will experience entertaining contests and mouth-watering vendors. Participants will have the opportunity to swing for a “Hole in One” winning a brand-new 2018 Chevy Cruze from Classic Chevrolet Sugar Land or a 2018 NX200t / NX 300 from Sterling McCall Lexus. Also, take a chance to earn gas for a year, a $2,600 value, by purchasing a $20 ticket, or more, compliments of Timewise. Plus, fundraising activities such as a wine pull and auctions with items like an autographed guitar from Andy Grammer or tickets to Ben Rector, will set the tournament

into overdrive. “Last year’s tournament raised more than $54,000, allowing Hope For Three to directly impact more than 300 families, by hosting five major events and countless outreach efforts throughout the year that provide children with autism access to life-changing therapies and services they might otherwise go without,” said Darla Farmer, Hope For Three Founder and Executive Director. “We hope you’ll join us in exceeding last year’s funds by registering for Golf “Fore” Autism today.”

How to Empower Your Kids Against Bullies By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Bullies have been around for as long as we can remember, but their prominence in the news is like nothing we’ve ever seen before. Throwing a punch and calling a name has been replaced with a much more sophisticated form of torture, one that is relentless and sometimes drives its victims to suicide. Bullycide is the new term created to encompass the many children and teens who have committed suicide as a way to escape bullying. The fact that we have coined this term speaks volumes about where we are as a society and how important it is for parents to be aware of this danger. Bullying has changed quite a bit since we were kids, and the results can be devastating. No longer is bullying confined to isolated spaces and incidents. The days of stealing lunch money or shoving someone into a locker have passed and students can no longer look forward to the end of the school day to escape their tormentors. Home is no longer the sanctuary it used to be, as social media and the Internet infiltrate every aspect of our lives. Now, when a student faces embarrassment, it is broadcast to

the world and relived over and over again. As with other forms of abuse, the victims hesitate to tell anyone what they are facing or feeling. Only 40% of bullying victims tell any- Endorsed by Katy Christian Magazine -

one or seek help, which means as parents, you need to be aware of the signs that something isn’t right with your kids. Below are some pointers for recognizing signs of bullying and dealing with them before they push your kids to hopelessness. 1. Do NOT respect your kids’ “privacy” on social media. The very idea of social media being private is absurd. Don’t let your kids guilt you into feeling that an Instagram account is like a diary. The two have nothing in common. A diary is a place where one writes their private feelings, whereas social media, well, is social. Whatever is out there is out there for public consumption, and you, dear parents, are the public. If everyone else can see it, you should be seeing it. 2. Note changes in your child’s behavior and day-today habits. Look particularly for changes in eating (either not eating or bingeing) and sleeping (too much sleeping is a sign of depression, too little is a sign of stress). Are grades suddenly dropping? Does your child seem to lack confidence and have a great deal of self-doubt? Is your child avoiding social situations that she once enjoyed? All of these signs are potential red flags that something or someone is affecting your child negatively. Pay attention and don’t ignore these signs. 3. Keep the lines of communication open. Ask questions and listen. Inquire about specific friends. Note your child’s change of behavior and discuss it with them. Know and talk to your child’s friends to see if there is something you should know. Be careful to ask with concern but not paranoia. Friends will stay tight-lipped when they fear be-

traying a friend’s trust, but if you ask with clear concern and love, good friends will share in an effort to help.

4. Watch for signs that your child could be a bully. These include aggression, getting into trouble at school, hanging around with kids who bully, an excessive focus on self-image, and a high level of competitiveness. If your child is quick to anger and his first reaction involves hurting others in some way, whether physical or emotional, he may be a bully. If he fails to take responsibility for his actions and is always looking to blame others when he is in trouble, you will want to keep a

very close eye on his interactions with his peers. 5. Remember that today’s bullying is oftentimes anonymous. This makes it even worse for the victims, as they have no idea who is going after them on social media and what this person has against them. Psychologically, it’s devastating. The victim begins to question his relationships; he wonders if he can ever trust his friends. Without a clear person or reason behind the bullying, he is left to agonize over the who and why. As parents, you can step in and utilize the resources you have - the school, the police, anti-bullying organizations - to identify online predators and put a stop to their bullying. 6. Work constantly to help your children develop self-respect and confidence. We’ve all dealt with mean people who set out to hurt us. Whether or not we become a victim, however, is largely up to us. As parents, teach your kids their worth so that when someone else questions it, they know exactly who they are and how unimportant that person’s opinion is. Bullies tend to prey on the vulnerable, so do everything you can to strengthen your kids and let them know that their worth comes from within. When they refuse to allow others to diminish their worth, they will have stopped the bullies in their tracks.

Commissioner Jack Cagle: A Caretaker for a Season By Dr. Rebecca Deurlein Talking to Harris County Commissioner Jack Cagle is like talking to an old friend. He’s warm, forthcoming, humorous, and sincere. Those traits have helped propel him through a life of law and order, one that continues to focus on making Harris County a better place. He is running for re-election in the general election on November 6, 2018. With 1.4 million people and an ever-expanding infrastructure, Harris County requires constant attention. Cagle is on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Even his meals - frequently all three - include work, whether it be lunchtime meetings or dinner speeches. The issues on the table this cycle are varied, but all are important and most involve a great deal of money. Cagle understands these needs and is willing to take them on. His experience as a lawyer and a judge was the best preparation he can imagine for the job of County Commissioner. “As a lawyer you have to learn to advocate for positions, to analyze, to study them,” Cagle said. “I loved being a lawyer, especially going to court. Then as judge, I got to be in court every day. I thrived on solving problems, trying to help the community, listening to opposing voices, and weighing with judgment. In that job, I dealt with broken things. I saw examples of how not to do it, how it could all go wrong.” As County Commissioner, however, his perspective expanded. Instead of fixing what was broken, Cagle was given the opportunity to look toward the future, to ask, How do we build? As Cagle said, know-

ing what not to do was a huge blessing in this endeavor, and he couldn’t have done it without his previous experience as a lawyer and judge. He also couldn’t do it without his Christian values, ones for which he is unapologetic. “When people ask me how I can bring my Christianity into my career, my answer is my Christianity calls me to truth, justice, righteousness, being a person of my word, humility, and transparency. Would someone really want me NOT to have these qualities?” Cagle has had to demonstrate these attributes throughout his career, and his dedication to the best interests of Harris County is obvious. He discusses Hurricane Harvey with a passion to do better in preventing future flooding and preserving the Houston landscape. “We have the ability to work to-

gether to devise a system for flood control. We did relatively well in Harvey, and it was the worst storm in North American history. We got 14 months of rain in 4 days. But our loss of human life was in the dozens instead of the thousands. Can we do better? Of course we can. We know that water flows downhill. That is its weakness and that’s where we need to attack the problem. If we can attack the water at the top of the hill, in the middle of the hill, and the bottom of the hill, we can spread out our impact and minimize its damage to us. I want to see an integrated system of approaching this problem, not just plugging up holes.” Another initiative that Cagle sees as imperative to Harris County is its park system. He and his team are taking an aggressive approach to developing greenspace along Houston waterways. The benefits are fourfold: First, this land cannot be built on and therefore is cheaper, saving taxpayer dollars. Second, it preserves wildlife along those areas. Third, it creates an ideal opportunity for bike, pedestrian and ADA-compliant trails. And fourth, a year removed from Harvey (and the lessons learned), it provides a flat, wide surface so that, in the event of future flooding, parks fill with water, rather than homes. Cagle explained, “Our population is doubling in the next 15 years, and greenspace gives water a place to go. If you have a wide greenspace with natural swells, water has a wide space in which to soak in. A house built up on a flood-plain is on an artificial island that quickly funnels water away, causing problems. If you’re looking for the proper way to handle drainage, God’s design is much better than

man’s design.” Cagle’s proactive approach to solving problems played a huge role in the construction of 6 major road projects since Christmas Eve, 2011. On that night, he was part of a team that drafted a deal with TXDOT to begin construction on much-needed roads that had originally been planned for 20 years out. The construction of 290 and 99, for example, would have been delayed until 2031 had it not been for the persistence of several Commissioners, working together, to push the initiative through. While Cagle credits many others with the heavy lifting on this deal, he is proud to have been a part of this crucial growth to the infrastructure. Striking a crucial deal on Christmas Eve drives home the nature of Cagle’s character. He is a man for whom work never stops; a man who carries two cell phones and two iPads, even on vacation. Nevertheless, he has maintained a marriage of 37 years “to a lady who takes it all in stride,” and has three children who are now young adults, successful and pursuing their passions. It’s not surprising, then, that when asked what he wants to be remembered for, what he wants his legacy to be, Cagle struggles to answer. Not because he doesn’t know what’s important, but because he doesn’t want to take singular credit for it. “I want to be a good and faithful servant who took this position and handed it off better to someone else. I want the legacy to be to public service, not to me. To how we as a county came together, served, and made decisions for the right reasons. If I do this job right, it’s not about me; it’s about public service. I’m a caretaker for a season.”

Dear Doctor: Living With Neurosarcoidosis By Dr. Rohini Samudralwar Dear Doctor: I have neurosarcoidosis and taking steroids but experiencing a lot of side effects from the medication. Are there other medications that I can start to avoid long term use of steroids? Dear Patient: Steroids are an anti-inflammatory medication, used at initial diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis or during relapses to decrease inflammation in the nervous system contributing to your symptoms. An infusion medication that has been used for more severe neurosarcoidosis in several centers, is infliximab, a TNF alpha inhibitor. These medications do have side effects to consider and therefore usually involve routine blood tests and close monitoring.
