I have only lived in Reston for 9 years…not even close to the 54 years some original residents have enjoyed. In that time, I have met many of the Reston pioneers who helped grow this community and who helped make it the special place it is. These ‘settlers’ are ambassadors to founder, Bob Simon’s Master Plan—”to welcome all.’” One of my Reston friends is long-time resident, Steve Gurney, who many of you may know and who is featured with me in the above photo. Steve tirelessly gives back to our community, touching lives with his spirit, energy and thoughtfulness. For 30 years, he has been serving the senior community locally and throughout the DMV. He is a humble force, and I’m excited to share his story in this issue. Reston is home to many wonderful residents who volunteer and contribute selflessly. As one who grew up on a military base, home meant change. I am happy to now be part of this welcoming community, my “forever home”—where change is good.

A Good Cry The conviction that crying has positive effects is of ancient origin. More than two thousand years ago, Aristotle theorized that crying has the power to “cleanse the mind.” Psychologists today contend that unresolved sorrow festers like a deep wound ultimately building to a state of chronic distress. If crying removes excess chemicals from the body and reduces tension, one would expect it to be directly related to psychological health. Researchers conclude crying lowers your BP, pulse rate, and temperature, and results in more synchronized brain-wave patterns. These different areas of research all support the conclusion that crying allows people to cope with stress and can be considered an inborn healing mechanism. Despite the verified advantages of crying, the cultural stigma that remains deeply embedded within a teardrop may actually hinder the progression to a better physical and psychological well-being. So next time you’re feeling a little emotional, remember, it’s good to cry.

Where Church Meets Community Restoration Church is doing something that seems out of character for a church. Monthly, they are meeting for Pour Theology (a discussion group) at either the Lake Anne Brew House or the Lake Anne Coffeehouse and Wine Bar at Lake Anne Plaza. Pour Theology is a play on words. “Pour”— because drinks are poured and “Theology” because they are talking about the things of God. You might ask, what is a church doing in a wine bar or a brewhouse? Pastor Tim Ward says “Restoration wants to meet people where they are at the local watering holes and in the community.” Restoration is a church that is unconventional anyway. Instead of meeting at a church with a steeple on Sunday, they have been meeting at a local elementary school—Forest Edge in Reston since 2014. Anywhere from 40–90 people are showing up for Pour Theology. The group is covering some pretty controversial topics, including Human Sexuality, Mental Health, Healthcare, and Politics. Restoration is not afraid to discuss any topics. One of the largest attendance evenings was when former Press Secretary, Mike McCurry came to talk about “Faith and Politics in the Land of Trump.” This was a lively discussion about what separation of church and state really means. Recently, Rabbi Holzman and Pastor Tim had a JewishChristian dialogue entitled “A Rabbi and a Pastor walk into a BrewHouse”. When asked why people attend these conversations, Pastor Tim said “People seem to have a longing for real conversations about things that matter. So many things in our society today are exclusive to certain groups of people. Pour Theology is open to all—open to diverse mindsets and experiences. I believe that we are at a time where having a civil conversation with people who disagree with you seems somewhat impossible. We provide forums for such conversations.” Conversations are always lively and all people are welcome. Many people who are not of faith come to learn and understand what discussions are happening in the realm of faith. Pour Theology returns from summer break on August 28. Discussion will be with former Economic Advisor to President Trump, Paul Winfree—topic: “Was the Good Samaritan actually good?” September 25 topic will be on Addiction. www.restorationreston.org

Looking Backwards and Forwards:

Celebrating Thirty Years at NextStop Theatre Company

We all have memories of our first theatre experience. Whether it was performing on stage at our high school’s latest production or seeing a show-stopping marquee event on Broadway, the universal themes remained the same: the thrill of sharing a common experience Original dressing room with the spiral staircase from the days with those around us and feeling the of The Elden Street Players. Credit: Matt Rose Photography catharsis of actors expressing emotions that we sometimes cannot. Memory plays its own important role in theatre, where reminiscing on performances past allows us to re-create the original sensation and remind us of what is still to come. This notion of memory is especially relevant as NextStop Theatre Company is poised to celebrate a landmark event in 2018: the thirty-year anniversary of the founding of The Elden Street Players, the precursor troupe to what is now known as NextStop, Herndon’s first and only professional theatre. In 1988, a group of devoted volunteers came together to create an indispensable part of the Reston and Herndon artistic community. Recognizing this accomplishment in the face of almost insurmountable odds is what NextStop’s 2018/2019 season seeks to bring to its audience. Evan Hoffmann, NextStop’s Artistic Director, honors the theatre’s humble beginnings in the forthcoming season: “Our founders Credit: Lock and Company were actually laughed at by some when they set out to start a theatre company that would produce Shakespeare, lesser known new works, and cutting edge musicals in the suburbs. They were told that the only way to do theatre outside of the city was to do the tried and true classics. Fortunately, our founders ignored the naysayers and forged a commitment and tradition of artistic ambition and innovation that has guided us to where we are today.” Taking his 14

own message to heart, Evan has structured the new season—which launches in August—so that each show reflects some aspect of the company’s history. The first show to open in the fall is a volunteer community outreach production titled Amour, where veterans of The Elden Street Players and lifetime area residents come together again to commit their time and talents to a musical love story. In a fitting tribute, Amour brings back the artists and technicians that helped make NextStop successful. The rest of the season is an eclectic mix of ideas and aesthetics, with a smashing rendition of Singin’ in the Rain directed by Evan Hoffman capping off the celebratory year in May 2019. Residents of Reston and Herndon remember the origins of The Elden Street Players with pride and fondness. Jean Offholter has lived in Reston for the last twenty-five years, and recalls how she came to know the company. “I’d never seen anything like them before. My daughter Cheryl moved to Reston before I did, and introduced me to the theatre. I loved how intimate it was, and seeing my neighbors and friends in the surrounding seats made me feel like I had a second home.” Cheryl had originally learned about The Elden Street Players after serendipitously getting lost and driving by their unconventional performance space in a converted warehouse in Sunset Hills Industrial Park, Spring Street, Herndon. After “almost swerving to the side of the road in excitement,” she pulled over and inquired about their upcoming show. Cheryl attended every event thereafter, never faltering in her dedication to supporting their unique artistry. This kind of loyalty is a trademark of the NextStop audience, and is part of the ethos that motivates the staff. Jean recalls the infancy of the theatre, when the budget was microscopic and the space almost half the size it is now. “I was so impressed by how such stellar productions could be made under the tightest of circumstances. The ingenuity is what kept me returning.” Indeed, “tight” is certainly a fitting word—many at NextStop look back at what was once a notoriously tiny dressing room located at the top of a cramped spiral staircase and see it as a symbol of where they’ve come from. The staircase continues to be a distinctive feature of the theatre’s architecture, and it stands as a physical, tangible memory of the history that lingers there. Sally Smith, another longtime Restonian, concurs: “They put on beautiful works with limited resources, and that creativity and adaptability is what makes them special.” Evan sums up the fusion of past and future well: “Thirty years ago, [the founders] saw the potential for greatness in our community, and today we are poised to become a new epicenter for arts and culture in the greater DC region.” Truly, lifers and newcomers to the Reston and Herndon area are in for a nostalgic treat and a hopeful nod to the future with the theatre’s thirtieth year, where memories come back to life and new ones are created at every turn. www.nextstoptheatre.org CONTRIBUTOR: Lauren Magnussen is a freelance writer, community activist, and theatre professional in Northern Virginia.

NEW CHIEF AT RESTON POLICE STATION Captain Jack T. Hardin Coincidentally, Captain Hardin’s career as a police officer began at the old Reston Station ... 28 years ago. In those many years, he has witnessed considerable growth – both in our community and in himself. He has held a wide range of positions in the police department working in multiple Fairfax County stations. He brings over 23 years of supervisory and leadership skills with him. Captain Hardin’s assignments have included patrol, bicycle squad, along with many others, including nine years on the undercover narcotics team. There is a large portrait of a bald eagle hanging over his desk, a gift from one of his sons, and it can sum up much of my first impressions of the Captain. ‘Hardin is a no-nonsense professional, who cares deeply about his community and his officers. He is fair above all, reasonable, and tough.’ Law enforcement runs in Captain Hardin’s family— his brother is a Virginia State Trooper. Captain Hardin comments, “John, Guys like you are obviously friendly and approachable; when it comes to me, as law enforcement, I try to remember to make sure I am smiling to ensure I am approachable in uniform. I promise I am in a good mood, but sometimes my face doesn’t show it!” Under Captain Hardin, the department will implement a community centric mission. He explained the mission as ‘flipping the pyramid,’ giving the officers out on the street the tools to gather and use information effectively, and filter the information down to the Captain instead of up in a sense. “Providing the resources and empowerment to the officers who are in the trenches places them in better positions to succeed.” states Hardin. Captain Hardin strives for continual growth and learning —a principle he is instilling in his officers as well. He does not see himself as just the ‘Captain,’ he is the leader and senior mentor of the Reston Police Station. He sums it up in two phrases—‘Take care of your people’ and ‘keep your people out of trouble.’ The motto for the Reston Station is “Engaging our Community to Enhance a Solid Foundation of Trust”. The Reston area continues to be one of the safest communities in Fairfax County, and it is the Reston Police Station’s goal to provide the highest level of service. The Police Department works closely with local citizens and neighborhoods to reduce crime, address traffic concerns and improve the quality of life. You can engage with the department and our new Captain at the monthly Citizen Advisory Council meeting—held the 4th Tuesday, 7:00pm at the Reston Police Station, www.fairfaxcounty.gov/police/district/reston

Seeing the Vision —The Eyewear Gallery RTC

Opening a business is a risky undertaking, especially in a down turn economy as 2008 was. However, that’s just what Dr. Dawn Devaney Gammon did in Reston Town Center 10 years ago. This year, Dr. Dawn Devaney Gammon and The Eyewear Gallery celebrate ten years of protecting the eyesight of local Restonians while helping them look their best in the latest eyewear styles! “Dr. Dawn” has been practicing optometry since 1996. She loves working with her patients to solve their vision care needs. She states, “When I opened The Eyewear Gallery in 2008, my vision was to create a practice to provide professional eye care services in a comfortable, friendly environment. With a passion for fashion, I also wanted to offer the most unique eyewear to my clients, and The Eyewear Gallery at Reston Town Center was born”. Dr. Dawn regularly volunteers her services and time to the community, visiting Honduras to help those in need with Virginia Hospital Medical Brigade and most recently raising money for The Pink Fund for Breast Cancer in a local Dancing with the Services competition. Dr. Dawn’s team includes two licensed Opticians, Karmen and Jen, each with 20+ years’ experience in the optical industry. They use the latest technology available in lens designs, “Our goal is to provide our patients with the sharpest vision possible and find the most flattering frames to express their personality through their eyewear”, Karmen, the Optical Manager shares. “We offer eyeglasses and sunglasses for those who want to stand out in a crowd, make a statement with their eyewear, or who just want top quality expertise and customer service.” The Eyewear Gallery motto is, “Like a fine work of art, every face deserves a fabulous frame!” Dr. Dawn and her team travel to the fashion capitals of the world to select the glasses and sunglasses offered in their optical boutique. In celebration of their 10 year anniversary, The Eyewear Gallery recently completed a full renovation re-design, creating an exciting, modern space to showcase their latest eyewear fashions. The Eyewear Gallery has been voted Best Eye Care Provider in the 2016, 2017 and 2018 issues of Virginia Living Magazine.

Dr. Dawn 20

In these times when many small businesses are closing or selling to larger organizations, The Eyewear Gallery continues to prosper as a locally owned and operated small business in Reston where customer service and personalized care are a priority. We are excited to support their commitment to our community. www.eyewear-gallery.com. AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

Leaders Around Reston

Jennifer Wappaus

Dr. Rishita Jaju

Growing up in a family of entrepreneurs and having a mother who was an advisor/hedge fund manager, Jennifer Wappaus just may have been born to be a financial advisor. She started at a young age learning stock charts from her mom and writing school reports on books like “Rich Dad, Poor Dad.” After graduating from Penn State, Jennifer became a financial advisor. This was 2008, the year of the financial crisis. While all investors were concerned at the time, Jennifer noticed that women seemed to have more anxiety about the market than men investors in similar circumstances. She learned that she could help relieve her female client’s fears through coaching and education, skills learned both as a competitive lacrosse player and through training. Jennifer’s early experience counseling women investors during one of the toughest times on Wall Street inspired her true purpose as a financial advisor.

Dr. Rishita Jaju believes in the power of hard work and that a helping hand from someone at the right time can change a life or create a career path. Growing up in India and moving to the United States at the age of 18 gave Dr. Rishita a unique perspective on opportunity and gratefulness.

Jennifer specializes her financial advisory services to a few areas: women in transition, be it due to a divorce, loss of a spouse, or a lack of time to plan for themselves and entrepreneurs or family businesses. To be a successful advisor, it takes an innate desire to help others. Of course, there are the essential qualifications needed, including securities licenses. It is helpful to have a degree in finance, and there are a number of specialized designations one can obtain, such as the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification. Beyond credentials, it’s important for an advisor to be a natural helper and a people person. Jennifer believes that an important characteristic of a strong leader is passion. A good leader lives, eats, and breathes what she does for a career, and her clients and coworkers can see it. Having that level of passion is contagious and inspires others to follow suit. Jennifer lives in Reston Town Center with her husband who is also a financial advisor and their two daughters.

Dr. Rishita completed her dental education at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in Boston, MA and continued to receive specialty training in Pediatric Dentistry at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington DC, where she was appointed as the Chief Resident. At CNMC, Dr. Rishita found her passion for pediatric dentistry - helping those with special needs and for working with patients who need a little extra help feeling comfortable in a dental setting. Dr. Rishita is the only pediatric dentist in the Mid-Atlantic region who has achieved Advanced Laser Proficiency Certification from the Academy of Laser Dentistry. After having worked as an associate in other practices for eight years, in 2015, Dr. Rishita opened her own pediatric dental practice in Reston—Smile Wonders—just off Sunrise Valley Drive. Dr. Rishita shares, “During dental school, my parents’ combined annual income was less than my annual tuition. Besides qualifying for scholarships and grants, I needed to be enrolled in a work-study program to afford living expenses. The rigors of medical school, dental school and holding a job helped me realize that if I put my heart and soul into something, I can achieve what I thought was ‘impossible’.” When asked about what makes a leader she says “someone who can look at the bigger picture, rather than focusing on one small specific obstacle makes a successful leader. My patients and my great office team continue to motivate me to be a better version of myself every day!” Smile Wonders gives back by participating in Give Kids a Smile initiative by American Dental Association to provide free dental care for children of Northern Virginia.

It Takes 3 Legs of a Stool It was 2003, and I was two years into my first term on the RA Board. It was during this time that I was introduced to Leadership Fairfax Inc (LFI), an organization that brings together leaders from the public, private and not-for-profit sectors to work together on ways to improve life in Fairfax County. I was coming from the private sector and was serving my community in my role with RA, but it wasn’t until I completed my LFI experience that I understood the importance of the partnerships between all three legs of our community stool. By Doug Bushée

PUBLIC SECTOR It goes without saying that our community depends heavily on public services. In Reston, these services could come from your neighborhood association, or the county, state or federal government. The impact public sector or quasi-public-sector groups have on our quality of life is immeasurable. These include our schools, parks, police, fire, social services, roads, public transportation planning, and zoning coordination and the list goes on. These services provide us the infrastructure to thrive as a community and to protect those in our community that need help, however, expecting these organizations to solve all our problems or to be responsible for all aspects of community life is a mistake.

PRIVATE SECTOR All of us depend on a strong private sector environment to help grow our community. Look around at youth sports sponsors and community events, and you’ll see an extensive list of private sector companies and individuals sponsoring these events and giving back to the community. Of course, the private sector has an enormous impact on our local economy. Small, medium and large size businesses provide jobs and tax revenue that help fund the public sector. Their contributions to nonprofit organizations often make the difference between a nonprofit’s success or failure.

‘NOT FOR PROFIT’ SECTOR Nestled in between the public and private sector is the ever important ‘not for profit’ sector. Unlike the public sector, ‘not for profit’ organizations are not guaranteed revenue and income and unlike the private sector, they cannot make money from the services they provide, however, what they can do is identify gaps in the services provided by the public sector and rally their communities to help make life better for people, animals and our planet. The challenge for us is to understand how these three legs of our community stool work together and not be swayed by advocates for one sector at the expense of another. All three are important to our community. We owe it to all three to support their missions and initiatives. We can do that by supporting local businesses, volunteering our time and resources to nonprofit organizations and staying involved in public sector initiatives.

Reston Triathlon: 35 Years Strong! By Mary Ellen Wolf

On Sunday, September 9, 2018, Reston Triathlon will hold its 35th race! Initially organized by Reston athlete, Norm Happ, the first race took place in September 1984. There were 164 finishers out of 165 starters. The race has grown to 500-600 participants. Norm collaborated with fellow athletes and friends, Dick Hayes, Reston Bicycle Club, Joe Fleig, Reston Runners, and Floyd de Andrade, Reston Masters Swim Team. The Reston Triathlon is sanctioned by USA TRIATHLON and is run by a board of directors composed entirely of volunteers. A portion of the race fee is donated to local youth groups and organizations. “The Tri has such a supportive community, from the race directors and volunteers to the athletes who train and party together, that once you do it, you’re hooked.” states participant, Dan Grove.

Two Reston athletes, Neil Medoff and Rick Uhrig have completed all 34 races and are registered for the 2018 race. Reston residents, Joseph O’Gorman and Jerry Bonnes have completed 31 races and have been involved in the planning aspect of the race for many years. Athlete, Jim Nagle will be participating for the 25th time this year. “The Reston Tri changed my life. My 1st Tri was a humbling experience, however, it was at this event that I learned that I was a solid runner. I

The Reston Triathlon includes a 1500 meter swim in Lake Audubon, a 40 km bike ride along Reston roads, and a 10 km run along the paths of South Reston. A relay team option has been added for 2018. On race day, athletes will arrive at South Lakes High School as early as 5 am to set up their bike-to-run transition area with the race beginning at 7:05 am.

Reston resident, Dan Grove has completed the race 26 times. He remembers, “In the late 80’s, I edited the newsletter for the Reston Area Triathletes (RATS) and profiled members in each issue. Gifted athletes were profiled, but many non-athletes who started in the early years did the race for a reason—surviving a crisis, or celebrating those who didn’t. For me, the loss of my parents. Reston has one of the oldest continuous triathlons in existence because of our community and the reputation we’ve built.”

The Reston Triathlon was an honoree at the 2009 “Cornerstones of Our Community Best of Reston Awards,” in partnership by Cornerstones and the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce. This community gala honors individuals, businesses, civic and community organizations that have demonstrated significant contributions to the greater Reston / Herndon area. https://restontriathlon.org AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

Autumn is a Season, FLU is not Every year at this time we hear about the impending flu season. It’s as if the flu bugs mark a certain date on their calendar to come out and infect everyone. More likely, certain behavioral changes at this time of year may weaken our immune systems. As the weather turns cooler and the daylight hours are shorter, we tend to be less physically active and we don’t get as much sun exposure, resulting in decreased levels of vitamin D. Here are a few of my tips to help boost my immune system so that I can enjoy the beautiful season of AUTUMN. 1- Stay Active-make plans for a “Happy Hour” walk/run around the neighborhood with a friend or family member. Since it gets dark earlier remember a flashlight, or wear some reflective clothing. Safety first! 2- Stay Hydrated-our lymphatic system (a main part of our immune system) can’t function properly if we are dehydrated. If you don’t like to drink water in the cool weather, try drinking naturally decaffeinated herbal tea. 3- Drink broth-bone broth has been used for centuries across most cultures as a healing food. It is chock full of nutrients and easily digested, two important properties when you are not feeling your best.

4- Get your Vitamin D-we know the importance of vitamin D for bone health, but research shows that it is also a key nutrient for optimal immune function. We get most of our usable vitamin D from sun exposure, so try to get outdoors at lunchtime and roll up your sleeves. It only takes about 15 minutes of sun exposure a day for your body to produce healthy amounts of vitamin D. There are also food sources of vitamin D, including mushrooms, cod liver oil and supplements. 5- Get a Massage-research has shown that massage stimulates your body’s killer T cells which fight infection and strengthen your immune response to invaders. But please remember, if you are already sick, wait until you are no longer contagious to come in for a massage session. I hope these tips help you to stay healthy this year so that you can enjoy all of the beauty of Autumn!

Don’t Like Things the Way They Are? A long-established maxim is that if you don’t like things the way they are then you should change them. In one’s personal life, once we develop the will to bring about change we can often make change happen. Increasingly, however, many of us are not liking the way things are in society and in government. The path to bringing about change may seem too far and too bumpy, but the necessity of making improvements in our society burdens us with a sense of guilt that makes us want to act. Seldom have I witnessed the kind of citizen activism that is happening in our community, state and nation as I have seen over the past year. Before our nation returns to the basic values to which most of us subscribe, there is going to have to be even more civic engagement. Some people do not want to get involved because they do not like politics. Politics is about the way our government operates, and as a citizen you should have some say in that matter. If you do not like the way immigrants are being treated, you can be involved in the political issue without declaring yourself a Democrat or a Republican. Involvement in issues does not have to be partisan. Take a position on an issue without deriding those who think differently. Dialogue can often lead to resolution. Compromise can lead to everyone being a winner. Joining groups like Indivisible or Moms Demand Action can lead to involvement in the governmental process outside partisanship. I see a need for change where we can believe our elected officials at the highest levels, where people in leadership have dignity, respect for others, and allegiance to democratic principles of government, where we do not have to apologize for the actions of our government. We may have a long way to go where the basic core values of our society are respected and where we respect other people for who they are regardless of age, sex, race, or who they love. We’ve never had any of this worked out perfectly in our society, but we have made steady progress until the past year. I do not like the way things are. I am going to work to do something about them. Join me in writing letters to the editor, appearing in vigils and marches, talking to my neighbors, staying informed, and voting. If all of us work together to bring about change, it will happen. Let me know, Kenplum@aol.com. Delegate Kenneth R. “Ken” Plum represents the 36th District, including all of Reston, in the Virginia House of Delegates

Herndon High School Marching Band to represent the USA in Normandy, France By Rini Dutta

HERNDON HIGH SCHOOL MARCHING BAND TO REPRESENT THE USA IN NORMANDY, FRANCE

By Rini Dutta

The Herndon High School Band (Pride of Herndon) has been invited to represent the United States at the 75th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy, France in June 2019. The Pride will be honoring the WWII servicemen and women, our veterans, active duty military and their families. They will be playing in the D-Day Parade at the American Cemeteries in Brittany and at Omaha Beach, as well as in the D-Day Musical Salute to Liberation. As they march, the Pride will also be paying a special tribute to the brave men of the USS Herndon, the destroyer that led the Allied naval armada in the assault on France and named for Commander William Lewis Herndon, after whom the Town of Herndon, VA is also named. The Pride of Herndon was recommended for this event by the government and military organizers of the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade at Hawaii based on their performance there in 2013, where they also won grand champion. They were initially selected for the event at Pearl Harbor based on recommendations from members of the Marine Band and members of Congress. The head of the parade then “scouted” the Pride online—watching videos, going through their webpage and following them on social media. “Getting to represent not just Herndon, not just Virginia, but the entirety of the United States will be a life shaping experience for our students,” said Kathleen Jacoby, the band director at Herndon High School. “Not only are they connecting with current day Americans, but we’re asking them to time travel back to 1945 and put themselves in the shoes of the brave men who were on the beaches of Normandy.” As the students gear up for this event, there is ongoing effort to help raise funds to ensure that all students will be able to participate, regardless of financial circumstances. This includes spirit nights at local restaurants as well as community events. The next upcoming community event is the Annual Fun Ride Bike-a-thon on Saturday, October 7th in Herndon sponsored by Green Lizard Cycling, www.greenlizardcycling.com. Proceeds from the Bike-athon will go directly towards offsetting the cost of the trip. https://m.facebook.com/GLBikeathon/ www.herndonband.org 44

Homes of Reston—

Old, New & Renovated

The Reston Master Plan established in 1962 called for seven village centers, each designed for 10,000 residents. With this plan, 70,000 people could live in Reston by the 1980s. Although only five village centers were built, by 2010, almost 60,000 people lived in Reston. The Master Plan specified that housing would include many new types of home options—group houses, townhouses, single-family homes, homes on the lakes and on hilltops. Neighborhoods were arranged in patterns called clusters, surrounded by trees rather than lawns. A 1967 article in The Reston Times states ‘“residents of the clusters enjoy the privacy the trees provide while giving the feel of an oldfashioned neighborhood.” Hickory Cluster by Charles M. Goodman Associates Architects

Sketch from the Reston Master Plan

Architecturally, many of the new homes took on a modern style. Unlike today where an open floor plan is often preferred, in the 1960’s, the division of rooms was given positive feedback both from buyers and the press. One newspaper article praises the home layouts for their “complete separation of functions.” The desire for separate private and public areas was also taken into account for patio locations and designs. Reston was advertised as a community with a variety of home choices, with 21 private builders designing and building homes—the homes not only had different interior layouts but exterior designs varied as well. The new modern style homes were furnished with modern furniture, some purchased from one of the first shops at Lake Anne Village Center—a Scandinavian furniture store.

Bowman House

When Reston was developed, one house already here was the Bowman House. The home was a large brick mansion of 25 rooms, built in 1902 by Dr. Karl Adolf Max Wiehle. Though Dr. Wiehle’s idea never came to fruition, Dr. Wiehle also believed the area that would become Reston was the perfect place to create a planned community. The Bowman House belonged to the A. Smith Bowman family who owned the Sunset Hills Distillery. It remains today on Old Reston Avenue and serves as office space.

Over the years, many of the original Reston homes have been renovated, making them newly unique and innovative, just like the original Reston homes. Each October, guests have the opportunity to view some of the exciting changes by attending the Reston Home Tour, hosted by the Reston Historic Trust & Museum. This popular, one day event gives visitors the opportunity to walk through selected residences chosen for their creative updates and style. The Reston Home Tour is the museum’s largest fundraiser with all proceeds benefiting the Reston Historic Trust & Museum. 48

The Reston Historic Trust & Museum Hosts Annual Reston Home Tour 2018 THEME: DESIGN INTERVENTION Saturday October 13, 2018 / 10am-5pm The 17th Annual Reston Home Tour focuses on six homes that have undergone major redesign in the form of renovations, additions, complete remodels, extensive landscaping, hardscaping and interior decor, each offering a unique Reston flair. Visitors will travel in architectural time from a South Reston 1968 Dutch Colonial to Reston’s newest luxury apartments, The Signature at Reston Town Center where a “Taste of Autumn,” catered by Balducci’s Market will be offered.

Expect the Unexpected! So you put your Reston home on the market and you got an offer. Great! Now what? Once your offer becomes ratified, seller should order disclosure documents from Reston Association. It is best to order the documents right away—the packet can take up to two weeks to receive. Once received and delivered to the buyer, the buyer has three days to review the documents and can back out of the transaction for any reason. The disclosure documents address the budget, rules, regulations and any violations on the property. Sellers are often surprised by the number of violations Reston Association notices on their home. I’m an agent, and recently, I closed on a single family home in Reston. I was on the buyer’s side of the transaction, and the home they were purchasing was an “As Is” sale. When we received the disclosure documents, we were all surprised by the long list of violations to be addressed. The buyers had been prepared for the obvious issues however, none of us were expecting two pages of violations that needed to be corrected within 90 days of receiving the documents. Typically, the seller would be responsible for correcting the violations, then getting property re-inspected before closing. Reston Association would then provide the seller a letter stating that all violations were addressed. However, this home was a foreclosure and an “As Is” sale. The buyers were responsible for ensuring that the property met Association regulations. Can you sell your home without correcting all the violations? Yes, if both buyer and seller agree in writing. A few of the violations that came up on this home purchase were: Strip paint off back patio and leave a natural color. Power wash house and repaint trim a Reston approved brown color. Paint entry doors and garage door. Remove ‘non approved’ outside lights and replace with approved fixtures. Landscaping issues. Address cable wires. Repair back fence. Along with many more. As a long time Reston resident and REALTOR, I am accustomed to violation notifications. Reston Association Design Review Board policies are one reason Reston neighborhoods look inviting and steadily grow in value. If you are thinking of putting your home on the market, be prepared! Expect the unexpected when Reston does an outside inspection of your property. They are most likely going to Ellen Moyer find violations. SOUTH LAKES GRADS

Making an IMPACT Debbie Hall Ventimiglia During her freshman year at Old Dominion University, Debbie Hall (South Lakes High School Class of 1983) thought she was being adventurous as she considered doing a year of study in France. She had never traveled outside of the country and had rarely flown on an airplane. When she told her freshman English professor of her plan, he said, “France will always be there!” He challenged her to apply to the University of Botswana instead. “I thought he was kidding,” says Debbie Hall Ventimiglia now, “but I applied and a few months later at the age of 18 I was flying on a 747 to Southern Africa.” Debbie, who grew up on Catalpa Court in Reston where her parents lived for 48 years, studied International Relations at the University of Botswana and traveled deep into the Kalahari Desert to learn about the !Kung people of Southern Africa. The impact on her was immediate: “I remember playing a variation of ‘jacks’ with a group of !Kung children, and it occurred to me for the first time how very similar we humans are. Since then, I’ve searched for ways to feel that global human connection in my day-to-day life, my work, and my writing.” She graduated from University of Botswana, eventually went to UCLA where she and her husband-to-be, Tom Ventimiglia, met while receiving Masters Degrees in Public Health and African Studies. Shortly after their marriage in 1994 they moved to Dakar, Senegal, to work with non-governmental organizations on projects in maternal child health, family planning, and HIV/AIDS prevention. They followed that with moves to

54

Bamako, Mali; Lusaka, Zambia; Dar es Salaam, Tanzania and elsewhere. Debbie’s search has taken her to Africa numerous times: as a volunteer comforting babies with HIV in Mother Theresa’s Orphanage in Lusaka; helping launch the Depo-Provera shot in Mali to increase women’s access to modern contraceptives; traveling to Nepal to deepen her understanding of women and children’s social and geographic challenges to accessible health services; and engaging in countless other activities to improve health and living conditions in Africa. Her three children “grew up in Zambia and Tanzania—never questioning that children everywhere were pretty much the same,” Debbie says. Debbie, who lives in Rockville, still works with NGOs and travels regularly to Africa and Asia on various projects. She says, humbly, “My individual work hasn’t made much of an impact, but I’ve loved working with organizations with the potential to make a global impact and alongside international and country-based experts who make an impact.” Debbie acknowledges that her life is not one she could have imagined in the days when wandering around Reston was considered adventurous. But there is a true sense of appreciation for her decisions when she says, “At the end of the day, if each of us can change the lives of just a few people— further their educations, give them reason to dream, impact their access to simple, life-saving services—then we’ve accomplished something important.” CONTRIBUTOR: Chuck Cascio, author of The Fire Escape Stories, Volumes I & II. AROUND RESTON— 2018 Summer/Fall Real Estate Market

As Summer in Reston comes to an end temperatures remain hot while the real estate market cools off. Sales have slowed since their second quarter peak. Recent home buyers are busy making their new house a home. Long days are filled with outdoor activities and time at the pool. While some are enjoying all that Reston has to offer others are quietly preparing their home for sale. They know that Fall is the second best time to sell.

Active Listings: Previously we looked at the number of Active Listings for different home types in Reston. Now we have combined the total number of Active Listings for all home types over the last 10 years. We had the most in July of 2008 (414) and the least in January of 2013 (59). Today we are inbetween with just 226 homes for sale in June of 2018. Inventory is still historically low and home buyers have limited selection.

Average Sold Price Per Square Foot: Low inventory continues to put upward pressure on pricing. We have seen a steady increase in the average price per square foot over time in Reston. In June of 2018 homes sold for an average of $316 per square foot. Since 2014 we have been hovering around $300 per square foot without a huge increase. If this trend continues we can expect a slight decrease in the coming months.

Tim’s Tips 5 Tips to Get the Best Deal on your Next House

TIM FINEFROCK

703-828-4846 timfinefrock@gmail.com

1. HIRE AN EXPERT. Find a Realtor early in the process. Look for strong knowledge of the market and good negotiating skills. They can also help find hidden inventory. 2. STAND YOUR GROUND. Know your finances. Figure out your total monthly cost for the house. Know your limit and stay in your comfort zone. 3. MAKE A REALISTIC OFFER. Know the market and comparable sales. Homes in Fairfax typically sell for 98% of their asking price. You can get a good deal without making a low-ball offer. 4. CONSIDER A DEADLINE. For example, this offer expires in 24 hours. This can help seal the deal and avoid competing offers. 5. PRICE ISN’T THE ONLY THING. If the seller is stuck on a certain price, ask for other things like closing costs or repair items that can really affect your bottom line.

In The Know explores the “hidden gems” of Reston—people, places and things known to few people—and shares their stories with Around Reston readers so everyone, even Reston newcomers, can be “in the know.”

IN THE KNOW! Cooling off at Lake Anne Plaza Fountain

The other day I spent an unexpected hour exploring Lake Anne Village Center. My initial stroll through the Farmer’s Market led me to the plaza followed by a walk across Van Gogh Bridge and into Hickory Cluster. With each step, I admired concrete architecture—mid-century modern buildings and townhomes, as well as a pyramidlike playground, quirky rowboat and the plaza fountain. Despite the posted sign, kids were splashing in the plaza fountain. They were soaked. They were blissfully happy. I remember well my own daughters playing in the fountain. Hot summer days, visiting Lake Anne to watch a morning kid’s performance and finishing up with an impromptu splash in the fountain. I was never prepared with a change of clothes or towel, and it didn’t matter. My girls had so much fun, right down to their pruned fingers and flip-flop toes. If you are looking to beat the heat this summer, consider visiting the Plaza Fountain at Lake Anne Village Center. Designed by James Rossant, one of the original architects to develop Reston’s Master Plan in the early 1960’s, and his longtime friend and artist Gonzalo Fonseca, the fountain is supposedly reminiscent of sand castles they built as children with “pots around [the abstracted forms] that spray water represent the kids who would gather and watch” [from Public Art Reston web site]. Plan your visit to include a delicious meal, coffee, wine and or local brew, as well as homemade chocolates, ice cream and pretzels; browse for a book or gently used toys and children’s clothing; rent a boat or paddleboard (by appointment) on the lake; enjoy a concert; shop at the Farmer’s Market; stroll around Lake Anne; relax on [Reston Founder] Bob’s bench and explore the Reston Museum. With so much to see and do, you’ll keep cool in the heart (and hub) of Reston! Ashleigh Dorfman is a Reston mom of three daughters and enjoys exploring and writing about our community.

Running with Tim In 2008, Tom and Nancy Susco started an annual race in memory of their son, Tim, who passed away in August 2007 following a ruptured brain aneurysm. The Suscos wanted a way to remember their son, but also to raise awareness about brain aneurysms and raise donations for two organizations that helped them following Tim’s death. As Tim was a 1999 South Lakes High School graduate, the Suscos thought a charity race at South Lakes, along the same roads and trails Tim ran as a four-year member of the track and cross-country teams, was the best choice. And so, the Susco 8K: Running With Tim was born— the 8K length was chosen to represent the 8 lives one individual can save through organ donation. Now in its 11th year, the Susco 8K has grown into a staple Reston event held every September, during Brain Aneurysm Awareness Month. The race has grown to over 650 participants, volunteers, and spectators. The 8K runs along Reston’s rolling hills, making it a good course for weekend warriors, but also challenging enough for those training for longer DC-area races later in the fall. In addition to the 8K run, the event also includes a 2K fun run/walk for all ages. Over the past 10 years, the Susco 8K has raised over $450,000 for the Brain Aneurysm Foundation and the Washington Regional Transplant Community, the DC-based arm of Donate Life America. But the Suscos know that much more needs to be done for both brain aneurysm research and organ donation awareness. Donations from the Susco 8K support brain aneurysm research aimed at detecting and treating brain aneurysms. Approximately 1 out of every 50 Americans has a brain aneurysm and one ruptures every 18 minutes. Donations also support organ and tissue donation awareness programs in the DC area. On average, 21 people die every day waiting for an organ transplant and someone new is added to the national waiting list every 10 minutes.

This year’s race will be held on Saturday, September 15th at 8:30am. 64

RESTON for a lifetime. Steve Gurney is one of those people that never seems to stop doing. He lives by the motto, “Try to learn something new every year.” Originally from the DC area, Steve and his family moved to Reston when Steve was in 6th grade. Steve was one of the first students at Terraset Elementary School when it opened in the late 70’s and was getting tons of attention as the first solar powered school. After graduating from South Lakes High in 1983, he went away to college with no plans of returning to Reston. However, in 1998, he married his wife, Bonnie and they chose to buy their first home in Reston. Twenty years later, they are still enjoying the benefits life in Reston offers with their two children, Asa and Ashley and Golden Doodle, Violet. The family

66

lives walking distance to Steve’s mom and brother in South Reston. Steve’s career path began early. When he was in college, his grandfather was in a nursing home. Regular visits to see his grandfather gave him an early understanding of how a family faces elder care and the challenges associated with ensuring loved ones are well cared for. After graduating from college, Steve took an entry level position in an advertising agency where he became familiar with publishing and media. Recognizing that there was no comprehensive resource for aging families in our area, he decided to merge his media/

AROUND RESTON MAGAZINE

publishing skills with the knowledge he had acquired about senior needs while watching his parents care for his grandfather. He developed what is now called Retirement Living Sourcebook, a print and online publication for the metro DC senior community. Retirement Living Sourcebook was purchased by The Washington Post in 1998, and Steve remains as publisher. www.retirementlivingsourcebook.com. What began as an idea to show his new employer that he was hard working and self-motivated became a rewarding career that Steve has enjoyed for 30 years.

Steve was one of the first

Shortly after starting students at Terraset Elementary Retirement Living Sourcebook, School when it opened in the Steve earned his Masters late 70’s and was getting tons Degree in Management of Aging Services at University of of attention as the first solar Maryland Baltimore County. He powered school. currently teaches there as an adjunct professor embracing the opportunity to share a different perspective on aging with students at one of the most innovative programs in the nation. Steve was one of the original founders of Reston for a Lifetime, an initiative to help people live in our community as long as they choose to. He is excited to see the organization continue under new leadership and help embrace Bob Simon’s vision that Reston is a place for everyone. Steve speaks and organizes groups regularly to address innovative approaches to aging and life transitions. One project Steve is particularly proud of is when he moved into several senior living communities to live as a temporary resident. “I had been regarded as an expert in senior living, however I had never spent one night in a resident’s shoes,” Steve says, “Living as a resident in a variety of different communities gave me a perspective that has been invaluable to better understanding transitions and thinking about solutions in the future.” Steve’s main hobbies are cycling, paddle boarding and snowboarding. A few years back, he became a snowboard instructor at Liberty Mountain Resort where he learned of their adaptive snow sports program, Blue Ridge Adaptive Snow Sports, a non- profit. Steve got certified as an Adaptive Snow Board Instructor and now each winter, you’ll find him on the slopes of Liberty introducing snow sports to people of all ages and abilities. He loves it, and “his only regret is that he didn’t start sooner.” At Liberty Mountain, Steve met Chris Higgins, fellow Restonian who thought it would be a great idea to offer paddleboard lessons on the lakes in Reston and established, Surf Reston. www.surfreston.com. As a fan of the entrepreneurial spirit, Steve helped Chris from the sidelines. However, about the time Chris got approval from Reston Association, he also got a promotion at his ‘real job’ to move to Denver. He passed Surf Reston on to Steve who figured he would run it for a year and find someone else to take it over. Five years later, Steve continues to run Surf Reston, consistently adding programs and events such as SUP Yoga and “Take A Break Concerts” paddling on Thursday evenings at Lake Anne that make enjoying our lakes fun to all. “It’s great to have long-time Reston residents experience our lakes from a totally different perspective,” says Steve. Steve Gurney is just one of the many residents active and giving back in our community. If you know others in our community whose story we can share, please email us at info@aroundreston.com. Around Reston Magazine is “by and for our community.” We want to hear from you.

Celebrating 30 years in Reston— TALL OAKS ASSISTED LIVING CONTRIBUTOR: Leslye Lawson

Earlier this year, Tall Oaks Assisted Living, a residential living center located on North Shore Drive, celebrated 30 years of caring for seniors and their families in Reston! Developed by the Lutheran Fellowship Foundation, Tall Oaks Fellowship House, as it was originally known, opened in 1988. In 1991, Tall Oaks at Reston Limited Partnership with Robert McNichols as General Partner purchased the community. Tall Oaks Assisted Living offers multiple levels of senior care needs – independent living, assisted living, and dementia and memory care. There are over 100 dedicated team members providing thoughtful, individualized resident care. To meet the growing needs of residents with dementia, The Rose Memory Care Center opened in 1998. In 2009, Tall Oaks underwent a major renovation to include a makeover of common areas and the addition of an expansive community living room, a chapel, a home theater and a terrace solarium. Co-owner, Mary Elyn McNichols remarks, “Bob and I, along with Tall Oaks staff and management, have worked collectively to make the lives of residents and their families more enjoyable. The various additions and improvements made over the years have made Tall Oaks Assisted Living more comfortable and safe. We’re proud to be part of this wonderful community.” Many residents have lived at Tall Oaks Assisted Living for five plus years, choosing to enjoy the lifestyle for the social benefits, medical services, healthy gourmet meals and organized activities. Some residents have lived in Reston much of their adult lives and feel fortunate to remain in the community they love, close to their families. Tall Oaks residents are actively involved giving back in our community through onsite outreach opportunities. Packing and delivering lunches to Embry Rucker Shelter in Reston is just one of many charitable volunteer options available to residents. These small acts of kindness promote wellbeing for seniors as well as help those in need in our community. Renovations to the Tall Oaks Village Center, where Tall Oaks Assisted Living is located, are now underway. When completed, the shopping center improvements will provide walking access to retail shops and a variety of services offering an added level of independence for residents.

We wish Tall Oaks Assisted Living another wonderful 30 plus years in our community. 68

She is currently working on a documentary film with her husband (a film director and professor) and a new mystery series featuring Hollywood icon Mae West. Kathryn and her husband, Paul, can be found hanging out at Reston Town Center, shopping the Farmer’s Market at Lake Anne or strolling the W&OD Trail. Foal Play (2013) Winner, Malice Domestic Best First Traditional Mystery Novel Competition Fire Chief Colleen McCabe is enjoying an uneventful summer supervising her firefighters, making rounds with her Border collie Sparky, and keeping an eye on the wild horses escaped from the local sanctuary. But when a dead body washes ashore, she knows trouble has arrived in Corolla. She is ready to start work on the investigation, but her best friend, Sheriff Bill Dorman, makes it clear he doesn’t want her poking around. The stubborn Colleen, however, is not so easily deterred. When a man with a gun is spotted lurking around the lighthouse and her former school teacher’s house explodes, she adds arson and a second suspicious death to her secret murder investigation. But her clandestine sleuthing quickly comes to an end when a bigger threat enters the picture.

Murder on the Hoof (2014) It’s mid-August in Corolla. The wild horses have been relocated to the sanctuary, the town is occupied with the upcoming theatre production, and Colleen is busy conducting rookie training and spending increasingly more time with Bill. But when a member of the acting troupe is found dead in the dunes and Bill’s ex-fiancée arrives in

70

town for a film shoot, Colleen knows trouble is back with a vengeance. When a second member of the theatre company is discovered dead at the Whalehead Club, Colleen is forced to put aside her feelings about her relationship with Bill and work with him to uncover who is murdering the thespians and why. She discovers as much drama offstage as on and quickly finds herself swept up in the intrigue of the community theatre group. As the danger mounts, Bill warns her off the investigation. But Colleen is determined to stop the killer before he or she strikes again.

Neighing with Fire (2015) Pacific Book Awards Finalist in Suspense, Library of Virginia Literary Award Finalist Colleen’s peaceful start to the tourist season is shattered when a tropical storm blows through and unearths a body buried under a vacation home boardwalk. When callous land developer Denny Custis dies in a suspicious fire, she has a hunch the two deaths are linked. As she and Bill investigate, they discover virtually everyone has had a beef or run-in with Denny and a motive for murder. When Pinky Salvatore, a rival developer and Colleen’s friend, becomes Bill’s primary suspect, Colleen is determined to clear his name. While digging through an ever-widening list of suspects, she becomes embroiled in a battle between those committed to saving Corolla’s wild horses, those protecting the endangered piping plover shore bird, and a greedy tour company that would destroy their habitats.

SAME DAY CROWNS In the past several years, new dental advances have changed the way that dental care is delivered. This is great news for patients and dentist alike. Chief among these new technologies is 3D milling. Over the past several years, Cerec 3D milling has quickly become the preferred method that dentists use to actually make crowns in one visit. No more sending them off to the lab and delivering your crown at the next visit. The result is that patients can be diagnosed and treated with their new crown on the same day. Not every dentist has this technology; in fact, less than 15% have the ability to mill crowns in their office while you wait. Make sure your dentist is using the most modern technologies to improve your dental experience.

How has the Bike Lane, which was located at Reston Town Center for 10 years, become more than just a bike shop? Well, the story has at its heart Anne Mader, whose family moved to Reston when she was only four years old, young enough for the community aspect of Reston to become ingrained in her. “Growing up in the Reston community always felt special,” Anne says. “It was a unique, diverse community that exemplified inclusion. Bob Simon’s vision to create a community in which to live, work, and play resonated with me, and our bike shop models that vision.” Anne, who graduated from South Lakes High School, and her husband, Todd, a Robinson High School grad, opened their first bike shop, The Bike Lane, in Burke, VA in 2001. That shop provided them with enthusiasm to do more to give back to the communities where they grew up. So after six years of having one shop, two kids, and many employees whom they refer to as “fabulous,” they decided to open a second location in Reston Town Center in 2008. The Reston location was especially important to Anne, who says, “It meant a lot to come back and support not only the cycling community, but to be a part of Bob Simon’s vision for Reston.” The Bike Lane’s 10-year lease ended at RTC in May 2018, which led to even bigger ideas for Anne and Todd. The couple decided to move to a location that was more accessible via the W&OD trail and had plenty of free parking. “The Reston Town Center was a great location to launch our bike

shop,” Anne says, “but we were looking to expand our business into offering coffee and opening up a nano-brewery. Todd has been a home brewer for many years and we felt it was time to bring all our passions together into one place.” The new location of The Bike Lane has direct access to the W&OD with lots of parking and is close to the Wiehle Metro Station. Also nearby are the mountain bike trails in Lake Fairfax Park. In addition to bikes, brews, and coffee—the new Reston location will continue offering weekly road and mountain bike rides, including its weekly Junior Mountain Bike Rides. This year, The Bike Lane also launched Beeline Bikes Mobile Bike Shop, which offers tune-ups and bike service to customers at home and work. “We believe in supporting our customers no matter where they are in their journey to becoming lifetime cyclists,” Anne says, “and now we can do this by serving customers in the shop or by coming to them.” Over the years, The Bike Lane has supported hundreds of cycling events, including sponsoring the Reston Century, Reston Triathlons, Reston Youth Triathlons, as well as hosting one of the region’s largest cyclo-cross races at Lake Fairfax Park, which has raised over $30,000 for park trails. “We are very excited about the opportunities that our new location presents for us and for our customers!” Anne says. “We are thrilled that we can continue to grow our business in the Reston community by becoming more than just a bike shop.”

STEAM Team Brings Public Art to Lake Thoreau By: Abigail Fundling

In July, Reston welcomed Connie’s Quilt, a new temporary public artwork realized by the South Lakes High School STEAM Team. This annual project is presented by Public Art Reston, Reston Association, and South Lakes High School STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and math) Team. Each year, the students create a large scale artwork that is installed on the Lake Thoreau spillway for up to five months, consulting professional artists and engineers while gaining experience in both conceptual and technical skills. “The STEAM Public Art program at SLHS has grown to become a much anticipated event.” says Marco Rando, professional artist and the teacher guiding the STEAM Team program. “The students are ecstatic about the communal anticipation. They place considerable pressure on themselves to deliver a professional work of art. The senior members are seasoned to know now, that as the sculpture’s structural integrity is tested in the school parking lot, unforeseen problems will arise. When creating a temporary sculpture of this scale, whether you’re a professional or a student, the challenge

is the same. Every aspect [of the artwork] must be created and engineered from design to assembly. I see this process of discovery and development as one of the most powerful learning experiences for any individual.” This year’s sculpture, Connie’s Quilt, is made from over 200 rings of white tubing strung together to create an organic and kinetic sheet suspended over the lake. The STEAM Team describes Connie’s Quilt as follows: “The artwork comprised of many parts is representative of our societal fabric and the importance of connectivity between people. Connie’s Quilt sets out to dispel the myth of the “self-made man” and identify the reality that nobody gets where they are without support from family and friends. The rings of this artwork represent how every individual is connected, even the rings not part of the main sheet that dangle by the grasp of other rings belong to the whole.” The artwork was named for Marco Rando’s Aunt Connie who he considered to be his ‘other mother.’ She passed away in April. The students agreed it was a fitting memorial. “Connie taught me much of what I pass on to students—the qualities of a giving personality,” says Marco. The 2018 STEAM Team includes: Kimi Nacu, Leslie Mills, Amira Kirwan, Lily Vogel, Harrison Cahn, Phoebe Liu, MacKenzie Krider, Sabrina Carstens, Levi Park, Catherine Lashley, Samantha Busch, ShaKeira Conely, Sarah Mamros, Marley Elmore, Morgan Ryan, Zayyan Budiman, and Alisha Basra. In addition, many others gave a hand along the way, including alumni. It is thanks to generous supporters that the Lake Thoreau Spillway project with the South Lakes High School STEAM Team celebrates five years. Public Art Reston was founded in 2007 by Reston civic and community organizations and leaders. It is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that imagines public art throughout Reston that inspires the community and engages the mind and senses. www.publicartreston.org

Career Readiness: A Collaborative Effort South Lakes High School offers classes through Career and Transition Services, a department designed to help students with disabilities acquire the skills to help them transition to adulthood, both personally and professionally. Two highly successful programs offered at SLHS are Secondary Transition to Employment Program (STEP) and the Work Awareness Transition (WAT) class. Both focus on work based learning and college and career readiness through life skills instruction. Students learn practical skills of independent living and employability, i.e. budgeting, cooking and traveling in the community.

“I have learned many things including about resumes, interviewing, life skills, and using public transportation.”-Husam Kuraishi STEP student

All students in STEP and WAT participate in an on-the-job internship, designed to assist him or her in assessing their interests and abilities and allowing them to learn in real life settings. Many of our local businesses enthusiastically support both programs providing work opportunities for students in various fields, such as child care, food service, government contracting, tech, hospitality, animal care and government. Without these community partners, SLHS students would not get the hands on experience of working and learning the many skills needed for successful employment.

“I have learned teamwork, time management, and communication skills”-Maryam Asghar, YMCA Intern

The opportunities offered to students through South Lakes High School, Career and Transition Services, and the Reston/Herndon community are invaluable to the young men and women who are becoming the adults who will live and work in our community. These programs are fast becoming a springboard to success for FCPS students with disabilities as they transition to adulthood. Students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in FCPS are eligible for the STEP and WAT programs.

Percussion Work s—Let’s Do This! By Michelle Pepino

What if you didn’t have a drum, but wanted to make some music?! Would you go to Home Depot and pick up an orange paint bucket and get some drum sticks?! Just maybe! The kids from Percussion Works, an after school percussion ensemble run by The Music Loft in Herndon drum to this different beat, captivating audiences with their unique style of music. Over 200 students from six Herndon elementary schools participate in the music program performing in parades and at local concert series. These young musicians learn the basics of drumming while playing their favorite songs. They also learn movement and how to read music and understand rhythm, which allows them to develop and hone critical skills. Having the arts incorporated into a lesson plan has been shown to enhance academic performance, build interdisciplinary skills (fine and motor; verbal and written), and improve teamwork skills. Group member, Molly Schoenfeld says, “It is so much fun and has given me experience performing in front of large crowds and learning how to dance and drum together!” “The Percussion Works program teaches a universal message that music can help a child succeed in other aspects of school education. Through grants and sponsors, Arts Herndon is able to provide this music program free to Herndon elementary schools. Laura Readyoff and the other instructors at the Music Loft are an integral part of the program and show such dedication to their students.” states Anna Schoenfeld, Arts Herndon Executive Director, Exhibits. Program sponsor, The Music Loft is owned by local resident, Laura Readyoff. In 2017, Ms. Readyoff was awarded the “Distinguished Service Award” for her contributions to the Herndon community to include: Percussion Works, a free music program for young musicians, Play It Forward Instrument Donation Drive, and for providing over $15,000. in need-based music scholarships. www.themusicloftonline.com At their 2016 debut at the Town of Herndon’s Homecoming Parade, the young musicians of Percussion Works were awarded first place in the Show Group category. The kids had fun working hard for their well deserved success. Maybe you’ve heard Percussion Works entertaining the crowds drumming out songs on their vibrant orange buckets at Arts Herndon’s Third Thursday Arts Crawl or at Friday Night Live! concerts where they are regular performers. ‘Raised Reston!’

ALICIA BENJAMIN SCHMITT The Benjamin family moved to Reston just in time for Alicia Benjamin Schmitt, and her sister Jackie, to attend South Lakes High School in its inaugural year. Alicia loved being a part of the new school and helping to create the traditions that continue to this day. She was most active in cheer, but also participated in dance, some musical groups, and played a little soccer for Reston. To this day, the excitement of being part of that new school stays with her.

Prior to moving to Reston, the family had moved around a lot for her father’s job with the National Park Service. They lived in many different towns, including the “other” planned community, Columbia, MD. Alicia’s Dad liked the planned community concept, and the idea of a new high school in a planned community was especially attractive to the family. They picked Reston for their new home and have never looked back. Alicia’s parents remain on Pinoak Lane to this day. “When we moved to Reston, I think there was only one stoplight,” Alicia says when talking about how things have changed. “Things are very different now.” Alicia remembers skating on the lakes in the winter and swimming in them in the summer. She loves the paths behind her parents’ home where they enjoy their walks. Alicia speaks wistfully of the former “organization by colors” (sub schools) that were removed when SLHS was updated. “It was so unique and great for bonding, and it made the school feel like home.” I asked Alicia about her favorite teachers, “So, so many favorites at South Lakes! Mrs. O’Toole–English; Mr. Elliott–Geometry (“you do what you think is best” —I hear this every time I do any task to this day); Mr. Cascio– journalism; Mr. Archibald–English; Dr. Wareham–greatest sub school principal of all time; Ms. Burke–PE. Oh, and I could never forget our sub school secretary, Mrs. Waddell, and counselor, Ms. Adcock. I can’t name them all but we were so lucky to have such incredible teachers and administrators. I could go on and on....” When Alicia and her husband, Kent decided to buy a home, they explored many options before choosing Reston. The draw of community amenities, the walking paths and the neighborhoods was very strong for them. They started out in McLean, moved to a Reston rental, lived in Franklin Farm for a period, then returned to Reston where they now own their second Reston house. Alicia, Kent, and their sons, Matthew and Tommy, are the proud owners of Oakley and Copper, 2 large breed dogs called the Leonberger. The family lives in the North Reston neighborhood where their boys were (mostly) raised. While her sons did not follow in Alicia’s footsteps and attend SLHS, their experience at Herndon High was a wonderful Do you want to share your ‘Raised Reston’ story? one.
