CONCEPT DEISGN RECEPTION SPACE

The office space design began with a focus on the reception space. The area was designed through the process of carving away at a simple box form. This allows the walls of the space to become multi-functional as both partitions, seating, and a desk. The design of the reception desk reflects the design of the space in which it exists. A series of angled shapes are manipulated to become an arching form that becomes the desk itself.

CONCEPT DEISGN CAFE

A cafe space is accessble from within the building as well as from the exterior. This allows it to be utilized by not only the occupants of the office space but by the general public as well. The location of the building is within walking distance of residential neighborhoods as well as a public park providing many opportunities for business.

DESIGN CHARETTE HOW MUSIC CAN CREATE FORM MIXED MEDIA EXPLORATION

9

CONCEPT DEISGN MUSIC PAVILION

The design began with the idea of two elements that work together-a musician and their instrument, and how they work together to create one thing-music. Within this space two organic shapes work together in a way that they support one another. One piece loops around and forms a gesture of a space where the musician performs, while a secondary gesture becomes a galley space and leads the viewers up and around.

MIDDLE SCHOOL RE-DESIGN SENIOR STUDIO COLLABORATION PROJECT KINETIC PERFORMANCE SPACE

13

A secondary space serves as a black box performance space that can also be used as a gallery.

There are individual stages within each performance space that can be moved up and down to create variations in height when the spaces are combined. The stages can create one large stage or three individual stages that can be used separately.

A tunnel-like entry brings people from the street level up and through a large curtain wall at the end.

The main performance space serves as a traditional theater. The walls on either side of the space retract and allow the three separate spaces into one large space.

14

An outdoor performance space an be utilized in the warm weather and the large glass curtain wall that separates the indoor and outdoor space retracts to combine the two spaces into one large performance space.

15

16

MAIN PERFORMANCE INDOOR SPACE Two partition walls, one on the interior and one on the exterior, can open up or close the space into three different spaces. A main auditorium, a black box theater, and an outdoor performance space. The partition walls can collapse and allow the three spaces to become one. A system of panels flank either side of an indoor performance space. These panels can be pushed back to open the space up to the other performance areas as needed depending on what kind of space is needed. The glass panels fill the space with natural light as well as open the space up to the outdoors, allowing it to become open to the elements during warmer weather.

MUSICIANS IN RESIDENCE CUSTOMIZABLE SPACE FOR THE INDIVIDUAL SPACE DICTATED BY MOTION

19

CONCEPT DEISGN CHANGING SPACE

This temporary living space for musicians in residents has the ability to expand and contract based on the preference of the current occupant, which changes every three months.

20

21

The movable wall has built in seating which lets the scale of the space expand and contract along with the wall and eliminates the difficulty of having to move large pieces of furniture

Closed Plan

The two movable walls hang on a track shown in red These walls divide the space on two different axes. Within these partitions are metal screens that can be pulled out to further divide the space

A desk is built into the second moving wall Open Plan

CONCEPT DEISGN LIGHT QUALITY

MICRO UNIT 300 SQ/FT LIVING SPACE MAXIMIZING SPACE

27

28

A set of panels holds artwork that can be moved and expanded to create one large photo or multiple smaller ones.

A large custom cabinet provides large amounts of storage with panels that can slide and close off certain parts of the cabinet.

A ladder sits on a track and is used to access the loft space. The ladder can slide across the width of the apartment to access the bookshelf and extra storage that sits behind it.

A second track runs around a large skylight above the main living space that holds lighting.

29

30

MULTI-FUNCTIONAL LIVING SPACE

A 300 sq.ft apartment was designed to maximize the amount of space available. A concept of motion is present throughout the design. Storage space was maximized by creating a large custom cabinet that spans 3/4 of the length of the north wall. The challenge was to fit all necessary living utilities into such a compact space. This included a full bathroom, washer/ dryer, bedroom, kitchen, sitting area, and separate eating area. In addition, because thee apartment is located on the to[ floor, as much natural light as possible was utilized to give the illusion of more space.

LIGHTING DESIGN INSPIRED BY CHARLES DICKENS EVERYDAY OBJECTS

33

90 WATT SOFT LIGHT 1450 LUMENS

A lamp was designed using found objects of a wire trashcan and coffee filters. The design is inspired by a quote by Charles Dickens that says “There are dark shadows on the earth, but its lights are stronger in the contrast. The grid of the trash can and the arrangement of the coffee filters lets light through the holes but blocks it where the filters are scrunched up, creating a contrast of light and dark on the filters.

INHABITING THE UNINHABITED CREATING THE INTERFACE BETWEEN PEOPLE AND UNINHABITABLE SPACE GRADUATE THESIS

37

THESIS PROPOSAL ABSTRACT

The thesis proposes a framework defined by the characteristics of tectonics, boundaries, and transition. All sites have a history and specific characteristics that must be examined and understood during the design process, however, many of these elements are forgotten once a space becomes inhabited. The exposure of these features can begin by looking at the idea of a scaffold as an impermanent means of viewing something as permanent as a building. Designing a temporary way of dwelling and experiencing the spaces that were not intend to be inhabited will allow the forgotten to be noticed again. Through seeing an experiencing space from a vantage point that it was not designed to be viewed from, we can encourage people to rethink their preconceived notions about buildings and question their knowledge about what they know as “space.

38

39

The decision to take the

studies begin to show different geometric patterns in relation to the scale of a person as well as how certain areas could be closed off or open relative to the skeleton of the scaffold. The ability for certain areas to be closed off, while others remain open begins the dialogue of how this can be utilized in order to allow this apparatus to be manipulated in order to adapt to each individual site.

skeletal frame of traditional scaffolding and re-adapt it began the design of a skin that wraps around the frame and becomes manipulative and adaptable to individual situations. Geometric shapes were looked at and how they could be assembled in order to create a unique and adaptable skin that began to integrate factors such as framed views and solid vs. void.

40

41

Multiple parts make up the design of this apparatus.

The skeletal frame consists of: standards - the vertical poles ledgers - the horizontal poles adjustable base plates - these allow the appara- tus to adjust to changes in topography floor plates - lock into ledgers rosette - provide connection between standards and lock in with ledgers

42

43

The use of the skeletal

take on a more long-lasting experience of existing within the installation for longer periods of time by expanding the interior space. This space can start to become a gathering space, where people can congregate and spend time in. The triangular panels can then be inserted on the interior of this apparatus and begin to direct the interior paths and directions that the users of this installation take.

framework of scaffolding allows this apparatus to be re-configured and re-adapted depending on the needs of each individual space it exists in. This allows the person installing it to curate how they want the users to move through the space and allows it to change in width, as well as in height. It can create a singular experience of simply moving up and through, or it can begin to

44

45

The ability of the apparatus to create paths and change

direction gives it the ability to create space separate from the space inside it. It can enclose and encapsulate existing space and create smaller pockets of space within it. The apparatus begins to intersect with the trusses in the space. In the parts where the installation and building intersect, triangle pieces were removed to accommodate the shape of the truss.

A cabin in the woods creates a modern escape from the

hustle and bustle of everyday life. A simple design cconsists of minimal materials such as glass and wood that allow the inhabitant to be immersed in their surroundings. The design is meant to mimic the contextual and conceptual aesthetic of a traditional sheds while providing the inhabitants with a cozy modern retreat.

An office of financial

planing becomes a stimulating space with a modern design. Glass office spaces provide privacy while still encourage employee interaction and collaboration. With windows only along one side of the space, the glass offices allow the finite natural light to illuminate not only the individual offices, but pass through into the hallway and open work space. Adjacent to the private offices sits an open work space with desks as well as a small libray.

A 280 unit indepen-

dent living facility was designed to incorporate an all-inclusive luxury lifestyle for those looking to move away from the “home-owning life. The facility emphasizes outdoor recreation with 2 large courtyards as well as 3 terraces. The site also includes 46 townhome units. It is located within minuteso Princeton Medical Center and a bistro restaurant provides a public amenity for hospital workers, local residenets of the community, as well as residents of the facility.
