CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE
W
ith two rounds remaining the battle for victory in the 2015 Australian Kart Championship are starting to really heat up across the various classes. We are truly seeing the best drivers in each class rise to the top of the championship standings and I look forward to seeing the best drivers crowned as Champion in their respective class come the final round in Geelong. Close to 200 entries has once again been received for this weekend’s round in Newcastle with drivers from all across the country lining up on the grid. I expect that there will once again be some great racing in all classes with the winners also claiming the title of NSW Champion for 2015. I wish all competitors and teams the best of luck this weekend and look forward to seeing the winners standing on top of the podium on Sunday afternoon. A SPORT FOR ALL AGES K
art racing is considered by many to be a young person’s sport, however, it has been proven that it is also one that can be enjoyed by people of all ages – the young and the young at heart. The youngest drivers, in the Cadet 9 category aged between 6 and 9 years, will reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. While karting for these kids is more about fun than winning championships the sport teaches them, both boys and girls, about car control long before they are able to obtain their road licence. Along with the skills they learn on the track, karting teaches these children a lot about being responsible for their own actions, respect for other competitors and is also an opportunity to bond with their families. For some of the younger generation, the sport can also provide a foundation as they aspire to build a motorsport career - a prime example of this is the fact that all 25 V8 Supercar drivers on the grid in 2015 started their career in karting.
While the sport can teach children many valuable lessons, age is no barrier when it comes to kart racing with Karting Australia having active members well past sixty years of age. There are many categories to cater for a variety of age, weight and budget capacities within the sport. While the youngsters start out in the Cadet or Junior National categories - depending on their age, senior drivers (over 15) have several options as an entry level category including Clubman and TaG Restricted. There are more than 90 clubs affiliated with Karting Australia across the country with in excess of 7,500 members. NEW AND OLD FACES GRACE THE PODIUM IN IPSWICH
J
aie Robson was left to wonder what could have been after coming within three laps of securing a maiden round win in the Australian Kart Championship in Ipswich on July 5. Robson, who secured the first KZ2 podium of his career at the previous round in Monarto, fought his way to the front to hold a comfortable buffer over CRG team-mate Jason Pringle as the laps wore down in the 25-lap final. Disaster struck however when Robson suffered an engine failure through turn one with three circulations remaining allowing Pringle to take over the lead. The Victorian was then forced to fend off the challenges from a fast-finishing Jake Klarich to claim his first win at the top level of the sport in almost four years. Klarich, who won the first two rounds, cemented his Championship lead through his second placed finish, whilst completing the podium was former Australian Champion, Chris Hays. In the elite junior class, KF3, Canberra driver Zane Morse got his championship chase back on track with a dominant victory across the weekend. A group of four karts were at the front for much of the race, with the tense battle going to the wire. Round two winner, Reece Sidebottom staked his claim for Championship glory coming home in second and move into the points lead. Sidebottom’s fellow Victorian Thomas Hughes secured his second straight podium finish with a third placing and Aaron Cameron completed the top four – the Victorian Arrow driver at one point overshooting the final turn and spearing through the grass. Harrington Doyle Racing Arrow Karts’ Scott Sorensen fended off the challenges from Holden Kart Team JC Kart driver Liam McLellan to take his second consecutive KF2 win, in the process successfully defending his Queensland Title. Finishing third was debutant Josh Davey. KA Junior fell the way of Victorian Monaco driver, Jordan Caruso. Harrington Doyle Racing’s Declan Fraser took the chequered flag first, however postrace, officials deemed that a collision with Jack Doohan to take the lead was avoidable and handed Fraser a 10 second penalty. This dropped him to third behind Doohan – who extended his points lead. In X30, Daniel Rochford took a hard fought victory in his Monaco chassis ahead local Arrow driver Ben Stewart to claim the Queensland Championship in the process. Stewart shadowed Rochford for the majority of the affair before one small mistake slightly dropping a wheel into the dirt cost him momentum and allowed Rochford to pull away. KA TaG produced some of the best racing of the weekend throughout the heats and local driver, Nicholas Andrews had the perfect weekend, winning every race in comfortable fashion. Thomas Cooper got the best of the field in the KA12 class after a spirited battle with Oscar Comley and Championship leader Jay Hanson. The James Sera domination of KA1 came to an end with Toby Pope getting up for a surprise victory.
