2015 Australian Kart Championship Round 2

CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE

W

hat a fantastic start to the 2015 Australian Kart Championship we had in Melbourne. The racing was some of the best I’ve seen in many years, not just in karting but all forms of motorsport across the globe. At the end of the weekend we had eight deserved winners stand on the top step of the podium. The vibe around the pit area in Melbourne was fantastic with everyone representing karting in the best possible manner. All throughout the weekend there was also large number of spectators, which was great to see. Not only did the event attract significant interest trackside but also all across the Internet with more than 18,000 views of the live streaming on Sunday, a significant number in anyone’s terms. A big thank you to everyone involved in the successful opening event, particularly the members of the Go-Kart Club of Victoria who presented the venue in a fantastic manner. They have really set the bar high to ensure the remaining four host clubs present their venues to the highest of standards. Special thanks must go to our partners Castrol EDGE, Jayco, MG Tyres, Dunlop Kartsport, Vortex and IAME for their great support of the 2015 Australian Kart Championship. This weekend we’re at the Monarto Karting Complex for Round Two, which also doubles as the South Australian Championship for classes run in the AKC and I believe the racing will again step up a notch. I look forward to seeing some more great racing across the weekend and throughout the year. Mick Doohan Karting Australia Chairman

A SPORT FOR ALL AGES K

art racing is considered by many to be a young person’s sport, however, it has been proven that it is also one that can be enjoyed by people of all ages – the young and the young at heart. The youngest drivers, in the Cadet 9 category aged between 6 and 9 years, will reach speeds of up to 80 km/h. While karting for these kids is more about fun than winning championships the sport teaches them, both boys and girls, about car control long before they are able to obtain their road licence. Along with the skills they learn on the track, karting teaches these children a lot about being responsible for their own actions, respect for other competitors and is also an opportunity to bond with their families. For some of the younger generation, the sport can also provide a foundation as they aspire to build a motorsport career - a prime example of this is the fact that all 25 V8 Supercar drivers on the grid in 2015 started their career in karting.

While the sport can teach children many valuable lessons, age is no barrier when it comes to kart racing with Karting Australia having active members well past sixty years of age. There are many categories to cater for a variety of age, weight and budget capacities within the sport. While the youngsters start out in the Cadet or Junior National categories - depending on their age, senior drivers (over 15) have several options as an entry level category including Clubman and TaG Restricted. There are more than 90 clubs affiliated with Karting Australia across the country with in excess of 7,500 members. To get involved in the sport visit the Karting Australia website www.karting.net.au to locate the details of your nearest club.

NEW ERA BEGINS FOR AUSTRALIAN KARTING A

new era for Australian Karting kicked off in Melbourne on April 3-5 with the opening round of the Australian Kart Championship presented by Jayco and Castrol EDGE in Melbourne. Near capacity fields were received in many of the eight classes being contested with more than 240 entries received in total. In the KZ2 Gearbox class, West Aussie Jake Klarich who was victorious to become the t driver to win a round of a National Championship in both the KF3 and KZ2 class. In front of a large crowd that included V8 Supercar drivers James Courtney, Scott McLaughlin, Fabian Coulthard and Paul Dumbrell along with several team personnel, Klarich showed tremendous poise aboard his TB Kart. Local driver, Troy Woolston led the first 17 laps of the race before Klarich made his move at turn one. Woolston made a rare mistake running wide opening it up for the youngster to charge through for the win from Jason Pringle and a resurgent Chris Hays. It was a five kart freight train for much of the race which also involved fourth placed Matthew Wall. 2014 V8 Utes Champion Kris Walton crossed the line fifth, while Woolston recovered for 10th. Lucas Dumbrell Motorsport V8 Supercar driver, Nick Percat scored a sensational eighth placed finish after dropping back to 15th at one stage early in the race. Liam McLellan has got his Championship chase underway in the perfect possible way for the Holdensupported JC Kart team by taking the $1,000 victory in the KF2 class. He was followed to the line by Pepsi Max supported Arrow pilot, Scott Sorenson with Championship debutante Bradley Marsh-Stepney third. In the top junior category, KF3, Victorian Oscar Piastri continued the great form of yesterday to take his FA Kart to victory in convincing fashion, 5.1 seconds the margin. Not so convincing was the battle for second which included four drivers and raged from the opening lap. In the X30 class, Brad Jenner continued his good form to win while Formula K’s Adam Lindstrom’s won the KA Tag class by 2.7 seconds over Ricciardo Kart Victorian Dean Foster. The KA Junior class - a new class to Australian karting using an IAME KA100 motor - produced some outstanding racing right throughout the weekend. Cooper Murray emerged on top in his Arrow kart over Angelo Mouzouris and Cory Arnett. In the KA12 category using the Vortex Mini-ROK engine a surprise winner emerged in Emerson Harvey. For drivers between 9 and 12 years of age, KA12 produced some of the most intense racing throughout the weekend. Harvey came out on top from Tex Starr-McCoy and Jay Hanson. The KA1 class - also using the IAME Reedjet 100cc - was one of the highlights of the weekend. Victorian Matthew McLean emerged on top taking a narrow victory over James Sera.

In between rounds of the Austral ian Kart Championship, the Marquis family created some karting history at the opening round of the SA Kart Cha mpionship in Nuriootpa. With the trio competing in the Clu bman Heavy class, it was a family affair with the eldest sibling Luke leading home his younger sibling Holly and the pair’s father, Sparky. HOSSACK SIDELINED, KLUNYK SUBBED IN

With their star driver David Sera still sidelined with a wrist injury, the DPE Kart Technology team was dealt a further blow recently with Team Manager Darren Hossack suffering injuries to both knees during a Speedway crash recently. The accident will see him endure a lengthy spell on the sidelines from not only his own racing in both Speedway and Sports Sedans but also his role with the DPE team. In his absence former long-time DPE employee Adam Klunyk will fill Hossack’s role as Team Manager for the outfit.
