REFORESTING FOREST GROVE

The Forrest Grove Cemetery Assoc. is searching for donations to assist in planting more trees on the cemetery grounds. In the Fall of 2013, through the generosity of Memorial Gift and the assistance of Culver-Stockton College students participating in Extreme Done Makeover, the Forest Grove Cemetery Assoc. was able to add 32 trees to the landscape of the cemetery grounds. Since the organization of the current Cemetery in the 1870s much of the existing tree canopy has been lost due to disease, storms and/or drought. The board members of the Cemetery are committed to adding to the existing planting as funds become available. Anyone interested in donating a tree or trees as a gift or memorial may contact – Forest Grove Cemetery Association P.O. Box 303 Canton, Mo 63435

GROUPS NEED TO RETRIEVE STORED ITEMS

The American Legion building in Canton is under new ownership. Anyone who might have items stored there should make arrangements to collect them by August 31. 2014. Any groups such as VFW and Auxiliary, Kiwanis or any others should contact Dick Pulse or Bill Dorris for access to the building. The American Legion Post 170 sold the building, but the Post is still very active. They meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the Saints Ave. Restaurant. Interested veterans are encouraged to come to a meeting for more information.

(Photo by Rita Cox) The Lewis County Fair was a big event last week with many children of all ages enjoying the activities. The fair featured livestock and 4-H projects, displays, great food and entertainment. Many people had the opportunity to visit with friends and neighbors and many enjoyed the good weather.

Constitutional Amendment 7 Projects Announced When Missourians head to the polls on Aug. 5, they will know exactly what their tax dollars will bring to the state if they approve Constitutional Amendment 7. The Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission approved a list of hundreds of transportation projects that represents the commission’s commitment to Missourians who want to invest in the state’s transportation future. “This list is the culmination of years of work, with collaboration from local transportation planners as well as input from thousands of citizens from across the state,” said Commission Chair Stephen Miller. “It represents a substantial investment in Missouri’s transportation infrastructure – but also means safer roads, more jobs, and a better economy.” The list includes $4.8 billion in transportation projects.

While the majority of work focuses on Missouri’s roads and bridges, it also incorporates other modes of transportation. “One of the most impressive things about this list is the expanse of work it covers and the real, tangible value you can see for your money,” said MoDOT Director Dave Nichols. “It includes resurfacing thousands of miles of roads, improving ports, railroads and airports, and even provides additional OATS service throughout rural regions of the state.” Ultimately, the delivery of projects outlined in this priorities list will go a long way toward fixing roads and bridges where Missouri’s system is already in bad condition. The end result of this work would affect Missourians in every region of the state and help meet the goals set forth in last year’s long range transportation plan.

The entire transportation improvement list and information about the amendment are available at www.modot.org/ movingforward. Improvements for Lewis County include: Resurface Route 81 from Iowa to Route 16 in Lewis Co. includes road and bridge. Add shoulders on Rte 6 from Rte 15 north Juntion to Rte DD. Resurface Rte 6 from Rte 15 north junction to Rte DD. Resurface Rte C from Rte 6 at Ewing to Business Rte 61 in LaGrange. Resurface Rte A from Rte E to Rte 16.. Replace/ repair the Rte 156 bridge over Seeber Branch. Replace /repair the Rte 156 bridge over Spees Branch. Replace/repair the Rte 16 bridge over the North Fabius River. Replace/ repair the Rte 16 bridge over the Middle Fabius River. Resurface Business Rte 61 from Rte 61 to Rte B in Canton. Resurface Business Rte 61 from Rte 61 to Rte B in

La Grange. Improve the terminal and extend the dock for the Lewis County-Canton Port Authority. Improve the Highland High School entrance on Rte 6 in Ewing. Resurface Rte 156 from Rte 63 in Macon County to Rte 6 in Lewis County. On Aug. 5, Missouri voters will decide on Amendment 7, a ballot measure to temporarily raise Missouri’s sales tax by three fourths of a cent. All proceeds from the 10-year tax would go toward much-needed transportation improvements across the state. The amendment’s provisions include the creation of a project list prior to the election so Missourians can see what their tax dollars would fund. For more information, visit www.modot.org/movingforward or contact MoDOT’s customer service center at 1-888-ASK-MODOT (1-888275-6636).

Students certified in financial literacy Culver-Stockton College reaches full residential capacity Culver-Stockton College is announcing the fall 2014 admission deadline as July 15, instead of the original deadline of Aug. 1. The deadline change is due to the largest incoming class of new students in nearly 15 years and a noticeable increase in retention of current students. “As enrollment numbers nationally are down, we are very excited to

go against that trend, Misty McBee, Director of Admission said. “The campus is buzzing with excitement as the additional housing is being built to accommodate the larger class and we await all of the new students to arrive on campus in August. Because of the rural location and lively College community, Culver-Stockton College is primar-

ily residential, with more than 95 percent of students planning to live on campus in the fall. This puts the College at full residential capacity, although regional commuting students will still be accepted through Aug. 1, 2014. We will offer eligible non-commuting students, that have been placed on the waiting list, early spring admission for 2015.

Junior Achievement’s “Our Region” program was recently taught at Highland Elementary School to fourth grade students. Community volunteers from United State Bank including Curt Meany, Luke Rothweiler,

and Kathy Hinkle went into the classroom and lead hands-on activities that taught students about financial literacy, workplace readiness, andentrepreneurship through this program. The skills that are promoted through

Junior Achievement’s programs help students make connections between what they learn in school and how it can be applied to the real world. The “Our Region” program leads students to examine re-

gional and state resources and supply chains as well as solve problems by weighing risks and potential rewards. JA classroom volunteers show how resources are combined to create goods and services.

Grant Funds History Writing Project The Missouri Humanities Council (MHC) has awarded a grant of $2,500 to Canton R-V Elementary School in support of the project, Wiki-Write: Missouri Local History in Wikipedia. The MHC is the only statewide agency in missouri devoted exclusively to humanities education for citizens of all ages. It has served as a state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities since 1971. Canton R-v Elementary School will host two separate one-day workshops in August on Saturdays, August 9 and August 16 to teach community citizens interested in Northeast Missouri and local history how to incorporate local history into one of the most consulted online resources, Wikipedia. People all over Northeast Missouri know a great deal of their local history and then are disappointed when Wikipedia misses so much. The solution is to improve Wikipedia by

incorporating what people already know and can contribute. This will be the first workshops if its kind in the entire Midwest. The one day Wiki-Write workshops will be led by experts who will guide writers through the complexities of editing Wikipedia. Participants will learn how to correct errors and misinformation, how to add new information and how to include photographs, maps and links to sources of information. The only prerequisite is the ability to navigate email. To learn more about the grant and to sign up to become a participant, visit http://wikiwritelocal.weebly.com or email wikiwritelocal@gmail.com or call D’Ann Campbell at (860) 917-1729. LEWIS COUNTY HISTORY

BACKWARD GLANCES From the pages of early Lewis County newspapers 25 Years Ago The Press-News Journal June 1, 1989 Missouri’s fall gun deer season will likely see a new harvest record and has been set for Nov. 11-19, with some changes from last season when hunters took a record 138,387 deer. There will be a further increase of any deer permits, from 265,650 last year to 290,000 this year. Most other regulations are the same as last year, except that checking hours will be 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., rather than 9 p.m. as in the past. There will be 57 management units, with antlerless deer quotas on all but two in the southeast which remain bucks only. There were no injuries in a freak accident Wednesday, May 24, in Canton that extensively damaged on car. A box trailer, owned by Canton Marine Towing, which had been unhooked a tractor truck for several minutes due to mechanical problems, was parked on Seventh Street between White Street and the alley to the north. The asphalt beneath one of the trailers two sand pads apparently couldn’t support the weight of the trailer loaded with wood chips. The trailer fell at 4:13 p.m. to the east, pinning the bumper of a 1984 Chevrolet coupe to the ground. The vehicle was owned by Jackie Schroder of 614 White. Though the nose of the car was pinned under the trailer, no headlights were broken. However, it is believed the car has extensive damage because of uni-body construction and the frame is believed to be sprung. Free lifetime entrance passports to federally-operated parks, monuments and recreation areas are available to persons age 62 or older or who are blind or permanently disabled and eligible to receive benefits under federal law. The Golden Age Passport is issued to citizens or permanent residents 62 years of age or older. The Golden Access Passport is for residents who have been medically determined to be blind or permanently disabled.

45 Years Ago The Canton Press-News June 3, 1969 An overflow audience in Alexander Campbell Auditorium saw honorary degrees conferred on the Dr. Alexander Lewis, Jr. (the speaker) and three other distinguished guests and the awarding of degrees to 202 seniors – the largest graduating class in the history of the college. One hundred twentytwo sophomores will be candidates for graduation from the Keokuk Center of Southeastern Iowa Area Community College at the commencement ceremonies Thursday night, June 5, in Calvert Stadium. Candidates for graduation from Canton are Kenneth Lynn Crawford, Janis Richard Galbraith, John Raymond Stiffey and Gary Wayne Lupardus. Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Hemming of Canton will celebrate their golden wedding anniversary at an open house Sunday, June 8, at their home. Stanley A. Morrow, 68, a former Canton resident, died suddenly in St. Louis on June 1. Morrow was president of the Federal Intermediate Credit Bank of St. Louis since 1957. The Lewistown community had its first cleanup day May 24. The Junior Girl Scouts 74, assisted by their leader, Mrs. Dean Phillips, delivered notices to the area homes. Nine volunteer boys and Ronnie Logsdon and Richard Penn picked up trash that had been placed on the curbs. Boys volunteering were Merle Robinson, Doug Vaughn, Rodney Webster, Robert Peacock, Steve Vaughn, Stephen Austin, Kent Van Meter and Kevin Van Meter. Keith Hetzler, Lewistown, has been selected to attend the American Legion Missouri Boys State on the campus of Central Missouri State College at Warrensburg, James Lee Spurgeon of Williamstown has been selected to attend the American Legion Missouri Boys State at Warrensburg. Dixie Brennan of Williamstown received her bachelor of science in nursing degree at St. Lou-

is University, St. Louis, which ended its year long sesquicentennial celebration with graduation. Degrees were conferred on 1515 students. For the first time in the known history of Williamstown school, co-valedictorians were named for the 1969 graduating class at its commencement. They were Jane Shannon and Nanette Hudnut. 75 Years Ago The Canton Press-News June 8, 1939 Canton will in the near future launch a general improvement of city streets. Orders were placed with the O.B. Avery Co. of St. Louis for a 10,000 gallon tank storage battery coils and equipment and 500 gallon asphalt distributor. According to the plan of Mayor George Martin and the town board the street improvement is to follow completion of Canton’s fine municipal light and water plant. This street program will meet with popular acclaim and housewives will be glad to know that the possibility of ridding Canton streets of dust is about to become a reality. Ed P. Gaines, 63, was killed instantly about 8 o’clock Friday morning while working at a saw mill on the Roy Halliburton farm near Benjamin, when a board, hurled by the saw, hit him in the temple. At the meeting of the Culver-Stockton College Board of Trustees last week, Willard Hawkins, president of the Bank of Canton, was named a member of the board. Ted Owen handed his contract back to the Canton school board and said he would teach elsewhere next fall. He has had several good offers. Ted made a fine record in the local athletic field and knew how to get along with the boys. Mrs. Owen graduated from C-S last week. They have only the kindliest feelings for Canton and will leave only because Ted feels he cannot afford to turn down a much better offer. Changes in the personnel at the Farmers and Merchants Bank if La

Grange are taking place with the retirement of C.A. Bozarth, cashier, and Mrs. Louise Wolf Bozarth, assistant cashier, according to the Indicator. Effective June 1, Morey Bozarth is cashier. R.L. McLeon continues as assistant cashier, Miss Cleota Mae Downs took the position of bookkeeper. C.A. Bozarth has been connected with the bank a good part of the time since it opened in 1904. In these 21 years, he has proved his ability as a banker by his demonstration of good judgment, conservative management and trustworthiness. 85 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal June 6, 1929 A most horrible accident occurred south of Lewistown Saturday which resulted in the death of Ray Lewis, one of the best known young men of the community. He had been hunting with a companion and had slipped from a stump, striking the gun and his arm was almost blown off. He was taken to Canton Hospital where his arm was removed Tuesday but it was impossible to save his life and died at 5:30 Wednesday morning. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Walter B. Lewistown, and was about 21 years of age. Homer Bittleston, 45, died at his home near Maywood June 1. He was a prominent young farmer, who moved to his community from Illinois several years ago. 95 Years Ago The Lewis County Journal June 6, 1919 A few years ago when a person went to town he either had a nice driving horse and buggy or he went in the big wagon. When he got to town he found a big open space with hitch-racks to tie his horses to. Or perhaps he put his horse in the livery stable. Nowadays when one goes to town he steps into his automobile, pulls down the juice, and travels at the rate of 15 to 20 miles per hour.

COMMUNITY NEWS LaGrange News

By Myrna Hoteling

Do you remember where you were on July 20, 1969? Neil Armstrong was the first to walk on the moon during the Apollo 11 Mission. His words were “Thats’ one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.’’ I was at my sisters home in Bettendorf, Iowa. July 22 is Hot enough for you day? Alice Solter recently returned from a family reunion in Fredericksburg, Va., which celebrated the 50th birthday of her daughter, Mindy Littleton. Other family members attending were Mindy and Katie Littleton, Laura and Calvin Roberts, all of Fredericksburg, Susan Schulz of Quincy, Ill., and Lee Ann Rose, Mario Arrambide, Doc Dorsey and Ashley Whipple of Buffalo, N.Y. Alice was able to stay for an extended visit and returned home with Jay and Vi DeGroot of Edgerton, Minn., who visited family members in the area. Charlotte McDowell Miner and Jane Fohrman Gaus were classmates all 12 years of school so they share a lot of memories of those days plus the ones formed following school. Wednesday evening they got together for a visit with Stan Miner adding his thoughts. Guests in the home of Larry and Maxine Wolfmeyer to enjoy a Friday evening fish fry were Bruce Solter, Alice Solter, John and Jan Solter, Patty and Jerry Logsdon of La Grange and Jimmie Wolfmeyer, Kaye and Jerry Carpenter of Taylor. A real attention getter Sunday morning at the First Baptist Church before services began was the

smoke alarm going off. Steve and Jackie Gillespie and 3 children from WhiteHouse, Tenn., surprised his parents Friday evening when they arrived for a visit. Steve will be attending a church conference in Kansas City and came home for a short visit beforehand. I read of a man bitten by a copperhead snake at a park in St. Charles, Mo. I recalled that in 1973 a kindergarten girl, Dawn Hadfield, daughter of Jerry and Judy Hadfield was also bitten by a copperhead snake. She suffered three bites, determined by the puncture marks near her thumb. She was in critical condition for three or four days but her experience had an amazing outcome as he recovered completely. The man was not so lucky. Stan and Charlotte Miner went to Davenport, Iowa on Thursday, their home for many years, and conducted business and visited several of their old friends plus her sister Marsha White. Buckley McCutchan had a three day delay before getting back on the road as his truck required some work. He is now on his way with a load for Washington State. Cyin VanWardhuizen, great niece of Conni Blessing returned to her parents Friday. They met at McDonald’s in Mt. Pleasant after a week long stay. The little 14 year old girl captured the heart of Aunt Conni and Uncle Bob who found her a joy. They enjoyed eating out, shopping and cooking together. Conni called on Pat Waterman Sunday. Pat is a great jigsaw puzzler.

Slater Reunion The five surviving children of the late Ruth and Carl Slater had a reunion July 4 through 5. The reunion was held in LaGrange on the Slater homeplace which had been vacant for several years. John and Susan Knoche entertained family and friends with a 50th birthday party for Mike Durst and Tammy Knoche on Saturday evening. Everyone had a great time. Jack and Pete Fountain just had a week with their littlest grandson, Kaden. They had Daycamp adventures, gardening fun and swimming. Thursday evening their granddaughter, Sydney Fountain came and spent the night and on Friday Kaden returned home to get ready for his fifth birthday party in Highland, Ill. The Fountain’s had a lot of detours on the way back to Highland since they ran into lood waters. On Saturday, Chris and Tracy Fountain arrived in Highland for the celebration of the birthday and everyone returned home on Sunday. Kaden’s mother and father are expecting a new baby anytime now so I’m sure the Fountains will be on the way to Highland, Il again soon.. Monday, Loretta Bringer attended the Hannibal Regional Hospital Board meeting and had orientation for two new members. The new Volunteer

of the Year was recognized along with the new Chaplin Volunteer of the Year. Loretta was recognized as last year’s volunteer and her portrait that had hung in the hospital mall for the last year was a gift to her. The area was sorry to hear of the death of Betty Kolthoff of Vibumnum,Mo. Betty and her husband, Arlo and family were active in the South Union Baptist Church until moving out of area. Betty and Arlo had a first year anniversary party for Marvin and I and she was a talented and attractive lady. Saturday evening, Marvin and Loretta Bringer enjoyed the ice cream social in Rensselaer. It is always a fun evening to visit with friends and they had dinner with Dalton Shepherd in Palmyra earlier in the evening. Paul and Irene Durst, Mary and Wayne Snodgrass, Nellie Snodgrass and Lounell Southard met Tuesday evening for supper in Quincy.. Mr. and Mrs. Les Lair of Quincy, Mr. and Mrs. Larry Lund and Sue Whitaker of Ewing took their mother, Betty Glenn, out to eat on Friday in observance of her birthday, Betty played bingo at the Senior Center on Thursday, after Kay had taken her to lunch at the Lewistown Diner and then they had supper at the Ozark Steakhouse. They also enjoyed seeing the exotic animals at the growing zoo exhibit. Sue Whitaker has moved back to Ewing after living in LaBelle for a while. Denise and David Goodwin spent a lot of time at the Lewis county fair, assisting where needed at the gate, 4-H stand, her Collector of Revenue booth and the democratic committee booth at the commercial building, children games and working with the 4-H kids and parents. Denise won best of show for her canned tomatoes and chocolate chip cookies Erma Dee Jones celebrated her 85th birthday last week, she joined JoAnn Hawkins and Karon Peer at the 18 Wheeler and then Doug and family took her to the Texas Roadhouse where Sonya Mock was also honored for her July 10 birthday. Present were

Sonya and Kelly Mock, Emily, Karah and Olivia; Brad Martin, Doug and Teresa Martin and Erma Dee Jones. Later they went to the Mock home for ice cream and cake. Sunday afternoon at Erma Dee’s house, Kevin Martin and family brought ice cream and cake, Present were Doug and Teresa Martin, Kevin and Robin Martin and Jaymee Martin, Rebecca and Landon, Kelly and Sonya Mock, Emily, Karah and Olivia. Jaymee furnished a decorated butterfly cake for her Grandma Dee and Robin brought the ice cream. Jaymee’s birthday was July 6 and was celebrated at Wakonda State Park where they were camping. Brad’s work schedule did not allow him to join on Sunday, but cake was sent to him. Erma Dee went to the fair and as always enjoyed the quilt show and other household exhibits. Although entreies were down in numbers this year, hopefully next year more people will take the time to take exhibits to the fair and show off their homemade goods. Thought for the Day: You are here to make the world a better place because you have lived.

FOR THE RECORD Named to Preseason All-America Team Junior defensive end David Marcinko heads a list of four Culver-Stockton College football players on the 2014 USA College Football NAIA Preseason All-America team. Marcinko was named to the first team while senior defensive end Mike Davis, junior cornerback Andy Smith and junior running back Desmond Phillips were honorable mention selections. Marcinko, a native of Kansas City, Mo. (Staley HS), led the Wildcat defense during the 2013 campaign with 18.5 tackles for loss and

nine sacks. Both of those totals were second-best in the HAAC. He also recorded 61 total tackles, including 27 solo stops, two quarterback pressures, and he forced and recovered two fumbles. He was the first Wildcat defensive player to earn first team all-conference honors since 2005. Davis, of Wayne, Mich. (Wayne Memorial HS), was the perfect complement for Marcinko on the other side of the defensive line. Davis recorded 52 total tackles (26 solo), 12 tackles for loss and

was second on the team with five sacks. He also broke up two passes, recorded one quarterback pressure and recovered two fumbles. Smith, a native of Defiance, Mo. He also had a team-high seven pass breakups, which was third in the HAAC, and recorded 53 total tackles, including 31 solo stops. Phillips, of Macon, Ga.

(Central HS), Phillips posted a team-high 738 yards and eight touchdowns rushing for the Wildcats in 2013. He averaged 4.4 yards per carry and 67.1 yards per game. He topped the 100-yard plateau in three games this season, gaining 135 yards on 12 carries against Sterling (Kan.) and 132 yards twice, against Central Methodist (Mo.) and Evangel (Mo.). He also scored two touchdowns in each of those games. In addition, Phillips netted four receptions for 19 yards.

ASA STATE CHAMPIONS

The Silver Streaks 14u softball team clinched the ASA Missouri Class C State Championship at the tournament held in Kirksville June 27-29. The Silver Streaks came out of pool play on Saturday in first place in

their pool and only allowed a total of four runs in their pool play games. After moving on into bracket play, the Silver Streaks went undefeated until facing Venom late Saturday afternoon. In a tough and well-played

game, Venom defeated the Silver Streaks 9-8, but the two teams immediately had to play each other again in the championship game. The Silver Streaks came out on top in that game; clinching the ASA State Cham-

pionship title by defeating Venom 8-2. Becoming the state champions was an incredible honor for the players and coaches; especially since the Silver Streaks are a first-year start-up team. The team is made up of girls

from Ewing, LaGrange, and Kahoka in Missouri and from Liberty and Fowler Illinois. Team members are: Samantha Smyser, Becca Scott, Morgan Jennings, Lorna Meyer, Hannah Fisher, Kennedy Flanagan, Payton Anderson,

Kaela Wellman, Jenna Hahn, Brook James and Cearia Wardlow. Team coaches are: Glenn Smyser, Tim Glascock, Jason Anderson and David James
