A number of electrical companies are battling it out to win an Action Renewable Award after being shortlisted for the flagship awards of the renewables industry in Northern Ireland. Following the highest entry rate to date for the annual awards, BHC Distributors, Northern Ireland Housing Executive and Saliis Renewables Ltd have been shortlisted in the category ‘Most Successful Renewable Electricity Installation’ category. A heartfelt desire to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support has led to a series of challenging fundraising events by Ryan Rivers, a sales rep at BM Electrical Wholesale, Coleraine, and his partner in sport, Trevor Magee, brother of the firm’s director and founder, Ken Magee. To date the pair have raised over £20,000. A series of strenuous events have included a four-hour charity spin cycle at BM Electrical Wholesale’s Coleraine branch, fundraising spin cycles at Sainsbury’s in Ballymena, and a competition to win a 32” TV by predicting the outcome of the RBS Six Nations Rugby championship. Trevor has just returned from a fundraising cycle in America where he cycled 170 miles from east to west Florida – all in a single day - as part of the Spacecoast Freewheeler’s Cross Florida Challenge. “We are very proud of what both Ryan and Trevor have achieved and would also like to thank all our suppliers, sponsors and the individuals who supported this very worthy cause,” said Ken Robinson, General Manager, BM Electrical Wholesaler. An electrical contractor from County Wicklow has been given a six month prison sentence for undertaking dangerous and illegal electrical works that “represented a danger to human life”. Under the Electricity Regulation Act 1999, it is a criminal offence for any individual or company to undertake restricted electrical works if they are not a Registered Electrical Contractor. The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) successfully secured the prosecution against the Wicklow man for portraying himself as a registered electrical contractor. The case was heard in Naas District Court under presiding Judge Zaidan, who, due to the severity of the case and the poor standard of the work, imposed a six month custodial sentence. The sentence included three months for carrying out of the electrical work whilst unregistered and three months for portraying himself as a Registered Electrical Contractor. No portion of the sentence is to be suspended. The works undertaken consisted of an attic conversion of a domestic home into a bedroom. The CER’s investigation found that the electrical works carried out by the contractor were wholly unsafe and constituted a real danger to the occupants of the house, which included two adults and three young children. Judge Zaidan heard evidence from Sean Ward, Electrical Safety Officer with the CER that the works carried out created a serious safety hazard for the occupants and the works were bad workmanship. The CER’s Commissioner for Energy Safety, Dr Paul McGowan, said, “The fact that the Court felt a custodial sentence was required reflects the seriousness of this case and the clear danger to human life it represented. This sends a clear message to anybody engaging an individual or company to carry out electrical work in a house that they must be suitably qualified and a Registered Electrical Contractor. The CER is committed to using its resources to investigate and prosecute unregistered individuals who carry out restricted electrical works or portray themselves as Registered Electrical Contractors. Registration is required to protect the safety of the public. “ T: (RoI) 01 492 9966 or (NI) 00353 1 492 9966 W: www.reci.ie

NICEIC airs first ever TV commercial in Northern Ireland Householders in Northern Ireland were among the first people to see a new TV commercial from NICEIC promoting the use of its registered contractors. The Cage is a 30-second insight into the potential hidden electrical dangers that can exist in a home. It is the first time NICEIC has ever produced a TV commercial and it aired on UTV and Channel 4 in Northern Ireland over the Easter weekend to coincide with the start of the DIY season, when many people try to undertake home improvement projects themselves. “This is an exciting first for NICEIC,” commented Mark Smith, Marketing Director at NICEIC. “We are committed to promoting our contractors in new and innovative ways that recognises the specialist work they do.” Using advanced CGI animation, The Cage shows a home-owner oblivious

Planners to rule on North-South electricity interconnector An application on plans for a North-South electricity interconnector is set to go before the Planning Appeals Commission in June. Under the proposals, 299 pylons would be constructed over the 103km route between the border at Clontibret in Monaghan and a large substation in Batterstown, County Meath. The pylons would vary in height between 26m and 51m across Monaghan, Cavan and Meath. In Northern Ireland, the lead on the project is being taken by System Operator for Northern Ireland (SONI) while in the Republic of Ireland, the stateowned commercial energy company, EirGrid, has submitted plans for the southern half of the project. An Bord Pleanála, the Irish planning authority, has been hearing submissions from EirGrid and opponents to the plans, at a hearing in Carrickmacross, County Monaghan, where it heard that the interconnector linking the two power grids is to be built above ground, against the wishes of campaigners. From innovative outdoor lighting to outdoor sockets, the electrical sector has a clear opportunity to benefit from the garden market…

Cash in

on the nation’s love of

alfresco living W

ith the clocks springing forward, every garden owner is starting to think about gardening – and a surprising number of them will be doing a lot more than just mowing the lawn and planting a few bulbs. According to market researchers AMA, the overall garden landscaping market is recovering after a volatile period from 200812, when it suffered from the impact of the economic downturn and weather conditions (notably poor in 2012). Sustained growth is now expected until at least 2019. Key factors influencing the market include the housing market, consumer confidence, and the general interest in gardening as a hobby or to grow produce. Add to that the trend for gardens to be seen as an extension to the home and al fresco dining, and there’s clearly an opportunity for electrical

installers to share the bonanza. Nathan James Dodd, blogger at gardensite. co.uk, has identified lighting as one of the top five trends for 2016 alongside more ‘serious’ outdoor furniture, built-in barbeques, more container growing and encouraging wildlife. New and innovative lighting techniques, he says, will increase the amount of time we spend outside; with energy-efficient LED technology enhancing the alfresco lifestyle at a much lower cost. So what are you waiting for? What is your strategy to get in on the boom? What can you offer? Every home-owner wants to enhance the appeal of their home and garden, and the right exterior lighting adds a lot of extra magic after dark. What they might not be so keen on is having to gouge out a recess in their garden wall to fit lights.

That’s where Timeguard’s new range of super-slimline, compact surface-mounted IP65 LED step lights make it easy to add decorative and safety lighting on steps and decks. These LED deck/step lights are a great way to add distinct accent lighting and provide safety lighting to your steps or deck walkways. Wired directly to your home’s electrical system or your 230V mains voltage landscaping system, they use very little energy. Once installed, you’ll have the quality assurance of the Timeguard’s extended guarantee - they’re designed to last for years electrically, plus they’ll continue to look good for years to come as well. There’s no need to channel out the step or wall and, furthermore, the double-insulated luminaires do not require an earth. The surface-mount back plates provide for fast

terminal block connection, making them even quicker and easier to install. Delivering from 20 to 24 Lumens of cool white light, the new dark grey and white polycarbonate Timeguard Step Lights have the good looks and guaranteed durability that property owners will welcome indoors or out. They are remarkably compact – the round model, for instance, is just 150mm in diameter and 27mm deep, and will provide discrete, trouble-free downlighting for steps, corridors and passageways indoors and out for many years. Electrical wholesalers are now stocking square, oblong and round versions in both colours.

Safety first Electric barbeques and garden tools all need regular mains power, and it’s worth

giving all your customers’ outdoor sockets a health check. I’ve seen some shocking examples of loose casings and missing lids with the socket exposed to the elements and – more importantly – to kids playing in the garden. Any IP protection may be long gone. There is plenty of choice when looking for replacement sockets but, if one of the main reasons you are replacing the old ones is that they look so bad, then do choose a replacement that looks stunning and can be relied on to stay looking that way. Weathersafe Vision from Timeguard not only looks good but has the added safety of see-through covers that show people the on/off status of the supply at a glance. Sockets with built-in RCD’s (safety cut-out circuit breakers) enable you to provide extra functionality for your customers.

PEOPLE PROFILE

New Profit Centre Manager talks to the electrical magazine about the many advantages of working with stearn…

Adrian out to ensure life is plain sailing for Stearn’s customers

A

s a sailing enthusiast, Adrian Lyon hopes to make sure that business remains plain sailing for Stearn’s customers. Joining the company last December, the new Profit Centre Manager at Stearn Belfast is the first to recognise that a change in personnel can rock the boat a little. But he’s been working hard to steady the ship and the initial success has been encouraging. “Change can be unsettling, but it can also be a great way of introducing improvements. We have a great business here and a concept that really works, but, in business, you can always improve, so we are trying to listen and learn.” The concept is simple. Stearn is a national super distributor that prides itself on being the electrical wholesale industry’s ‘other warehouse’, stocking market-leading brands in abundance and offering next-day delivery anywhere in Ireland without additional charge. “Stock is so important, and that is one of our core strengths, but it doesn’t mean much if we can’t get it to our customers,” added Adrian. “Stock has to be balanced with great service, and that is something I believe is essential.” These may be basic principles but then simple can also be effective. For Stearn, the focus remains on keeping life as straightforward as possible for the company’s customers. “We only supply to electrical wholesalers,” said Adrian. “That is something we are always keen to stress. We don’t sell to the public and we don’t sell to contractors. “Electrical wholesalers want a reliable supply chain, which is exactly what we deliver. Reliability in terms of service and reliability in terms of product.” The latter is an essential element to Stearn’s success. The company has developed a strong product portfolio that consists of the industry’s leading names offering the latest advances in technology. The product range is also vast, covering areas such as wiring accessories, controls, fire and security, space heating, and lamps and lighting, amongst many others. “Our range is backed up by strong warranties,” Adrian explained. “We only

work with credible manufacturers and this is proven by the extensive warranties they offer on their products. We don’t believe in stocking the cheap and cheerful products as we find they only create problems for everyone.” Coming from a background in construction and interior products, Adrian has been involved in the electrical sector for four years, initially working for two lighting companies before joining Stearn. He feels the sector is one of the fastest moving he’s been involved in. “The market is changing all the time and when you look at areas such as LED lighting, then it can be hard to keep up. But we have really strong relationships with all the leading manufacturers, so that gives us direct access to the latest products for our customers.”

Adrian also feels that the strength of the Stearn business model pays dividends to customers. “As a Profit Centre we have a certain amount of autonomy when it comes to decision-making, which means we can be more flexible,” he explained. “But we are also part of a large buying group, so we are able to offer our customers highly competitive rates. It’s a great combination.” Adrian loves nothing better than getting away from it all out on the ocean waves with his wife Miriam, who is a Hospice Manager for Marie Cure Cancer Care. “I love sailing and the coastlines here are simply beautiful. It’s a great way to clear your head.” T: (NI) 028 9077 1506 or (RoI) 048 9077 1506 W: www.stearn.co.uk

reland’s popular Electrical Trade Event returns to the Citywest Hotel, Dublin this year on Wednesday, 5 and Thursday, 6 October - and the good news for everyone is that it just keeps getting bigger and better! The organiser, Ireland’s Electrical Magazine, has established a winning formula that ensures both exhibitors and visitors return year after year to support the industry’s leading trade event in Ireland. Show organiser, Janice Uprichard, said, “When we first set up the show back in 2013 we knew there was a demand for an event such as this, but we could never have dreamed it would be the huge success it has undoubtedly become. “We have no trouble attracting top companies and trade bodies to attend the show as they can easily see the valuable opportunities it provides the crowds that turn up each year are testament to that. We have worked hard to produce an event that has something for everyone and that has wide industry appeal.” Visitors to the event will be able to find out about the latest innovations and products across a wide range of sectors, including residential, education, health, leisure, manufacturing, ecclesiastical and others. Lauded by those in the industry as the

perfect platform for building business, one of the main attractions is the chance to meet with so many people from the industry under one roof. Exhibitors can meet with customers from across the sector, including wholesalers, contractors, M&E consultants and contractors, as well as construction firms. The show also attracts a wide range of decision makers, including those from Government departments and leading manufacturers, giving you the chance to talk to the influencers about the issues that matter. Visitors also have the chance to find out about the latest developments and, more importantly, opportunities in the electrical industry in Ireland. “We’re looking forward to meeting new faces at this year’s event, but also welcoming back return exhibitors and visitors,” said Janice. “Even if you have attended the show before, there will still be something new for you to look at. As always, this will include product launches, expert advice, business opportunities and seminars on the latest developments, plus a dedicated tool zone and lots of competitions and giveaways.”

Sign up for Mount Kilimanjaro trek in aid of Northern Ireland family

T

he Electrical Industries Charity is looking for 25 enthusiastic, passionate and fit trekkers to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and support research into a rare form of cancer and provide financial assistance to a Northern Ireland family. The charity is aiming to raise £100,000 by February 2017 - its largest fundraising challenge. This money will help the family of Christopher Hendrie who died from the rare bile duct cancer. The life of Christopher and his family changed in just 10 days in August. On August 25, 2014 Christopher and his wife found out they were expecting their third child. But on August 28, 2014 he fell sick with a mystery illness. On September 5, 2014, Christopher was diagnosed with an extremely rare form of cancer, cholangiocarcinoma. Nine weeks later, on October 31, 2014, Christopher passed way in the Mater Hospital, Belfast, following nine weeks of radiation and chemotherapy, with his wife by his side. He was 32 years old. Due to his existing genetic autoimmune disease, Christopher wasn’t eligible for life insurance. For his family the repercussions of Christopher’s loss confront them daily. To help lift this heavy burden, many industry representatives, his friends, team-mates and family have been joining together to cover the expensive costs associated with the loss of a loved one. The goal of this fundraiser is to raise £100,000 - 10% of the funds will go to Cancer Research UK and the remaining 90% to the Hendrie family. By joining this incredible adventure, you’ll raise funds to ensure the Hendrie family get the financial assistance they need and critical funding will go into the research we need to find a cure.

Changes to annual events This year’s fundraising events organised by the Northern Ireland branch of the Electrical Industries Charity include: The late Christopher Hendrie and his family. The Mt Kilimanjaro trek is to raise money for his family and research into the rare cancer that killed him.

Climb date: February 4-13, 2017. These dates will mean that the night the team pushes for the summit will be a full-moon, illuminating the glaciers and lighting the path. Fundraising goal: £5,000 per person. This includes travel costs, accommodation in twin-share room in three-star hotels and comfortable camping, plus all costs associated with the climb. Minimum age: 16 years old (when accompanied by a parent or guardian). To participate, contact Tessa Ogle on 020 3696 1710 or e-mail tessa.ogle@ electricalcharity.org

Financial support for apprentices

There are ten bursaries on offer with a total of £4,800 available for each of the 10 apprentices in a 12-month period. The Bursary Scheme is part of the recently

launched Apprentice Support Programme which is designed to help young people deal with some of the key challenges that affect them as they work towards their apprenticeship. The programme offers independent advice and information. The programme is supported by the Charity’s industry partner, City Electrical Factors (CEF). T: 0800 652 1618. W: www.electricalcharity.org

HellermannTyton strengthens sales team

H

ellermannTyton, a global manufacturer of cable management solutions, has provided additional support to its sales teams in Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland in the form of its new Product Promoters. These Product Promoters have been introduced to assist the electrical wholesaler in promoting and selling HellermannTyton’s portfolio of more than 20,000 items, which includes cable ties and other associated cable management products. They will work with the company’s distribution partners to help drive interest and sales by providing support to its distributors through ‘breakfast morning’ product demonstrations and visits to end-users. In addition to the ‘on the road’ demonstrations, the promoters will also be offering training on products, including the unique Spotclip downlight fixing range, which won the’ Innovative Product of the Year Award’ at Northern Ireland’s Electrical

Midlands BRIEF firms enter data centre Gaelectric to sell off sector €750m of in €5m windfarms partnership Irish energy

The Aviva goes green Under a new deal with SSE Airtricity, the Aviva Stadium’s power supply is to come entirely from renewable energy sources. By removing its carbon footprint, the stadium says it is saving the environment nearly 3,000 tonnes in

annual emissions, equivalent to the carbon stored by 22 acres of mature rainforest. The switch also makes the Aviva the only stadium in the RBS Six Nations championship to be powered solely by clean energy.

firm Gaelectric is considering a deal that could place a €750million enterprise valuation on its assets. Proceeds would be used to develop Gaelectric’s other renewable energy assets and projects including energy storage, solar and bioenergy.

Two businesses in Louth and Meath plan to create more than 30 jobs manufacturing the newest generation of containerised data centres. Dunleer-based Suretank, a manufacturer of specialist containers and equipment for the oil and gas industry, has joined up with Stamullen-based Hanley Energy, an SME that offers energy management services and specialist data centre power-management products to clients. The two firms plan to manufacture modular versions of data centres in an investment worth €5million.

ESB worker creates safety tool Bernard Camon who has invented the Safe Line Lifer.

A design by Co Offaly native Bernard Camon is helping ESB Networks crews stay safe while powerlines are being installed. The ‘Safe Line Lifter’ is a lightweight tool that helps lower injury risk of ESB network technicians while working on overhead lines. It also reduces safety risks for colleagues working on the ground. According to Bernard, inspiration struck while watching two colleagues at a height struggling to lift a heavy overhead cable.

“I thought that there has to be a better way, where there was no danger to a Network Technician and other people on the ground. The Safe Line Lifter is a basic design, with a lever arch type effect.” The ESB Networks employee also says the lever arch mechanism will ensure a more efficient and safer method to aid installation and maintenance work. “It allows the user lift the line while not leaning back. Assuming a

more comfortable position, the line can be installed quicker, more safely and everybody can go home without incident.” Bernard’s Safe Line Lifter won an award in the safety category at the 2015 ESB Staff Innovation Awards, showing how an individual staff member can drive continuous improvement in safety and health. Company Profile – 80th Anniversary

Leading suppliers in lighting, communication and power system equipment remain as forward-thinking as ever…

AJ Hurst - 80 years of powering progress

G

reat service, quality products, competitive pricing - every company uses the same adjectives to describe its success yet few can genuinely follow through on these promises. AJ Hurst is one of those few and, as the company celebrates 80 years in business, it continues to strive for perfection. The company recently unveiled a new look that includes the strapline ‘Powering progress’ and these two words perfectly sum up the ethos of AJ Hurst. The company has developed strong relationships with the world’s leading suppliers in lighting, communication and power system equipment, meaning customers benefit from the latest innovative technology. This forward-thinking attitude

permeates the experienced AJ Hurst team, with staff always keen to build on an already extensive product portfolio and keep themselves ahead of the competition. This drive and passion is normally seen in companies working to establish themselves, not in the case of AJ Hurst which has been in business for over eight decades. But it is an ethos that comes from a company history that has seen AJ Hurst overcome adversity time and time again. The sudden death of original founder Alfred J Hurst almost saw the company fold before it was taken over by Geoffrey Goldsbrough who ensured its initial survival and early growth. His son, also named Geoffrey, then overcame the negative effects of the Troubles, the

collapse of major customer DeLorean and a move to Newtownards, before a move to the newly established enterprise zone at Duncrue brought some much-needed stability. Now the third generation of the Goldsbrough family - Managing Director, Lisa Kitchen, and Sales Director, Mark Goldsbrough – continue to demonstrate the company’s inner strength and, more importantly, a progressive attitude. “We are not a company that ever rests on its laurels,” explained Lisa Kitchen, Managing Director. “With such a strong core of customers who have worked with us for 10, 20, 30 and even 40 years, it would be easy to take this for granted. But we realise that now, more than ever, you have to work extremely hard to keep your customers happy and to stay

COMMUNICATIONS

“Our partnership with AJ Hurst gives us supply and application solutions and a one-stop-shop for controls and automation established in a key market. Their relationships and understanding of customer needs are vital for our success. Customers can expect value-adding services and support from a strong local team with market-leading brands.” Colin Green, General Manager, Phoenix Contact.

CONTROLS SAFETY ahead.” Mark Goldsbrough, Sales Director, agrees, “A commitment to research and development by the manufacturers we work with is something we feel is vitally important. We are always looking for a new way of doing things. We enjoy learning about new products and explaining these benefits to our customers.” The urge to focus solely on price regardless of quality is an issue that AJ Hurst constantly faces up to, particularly given the regular influx of cheaper products into the marketplace. “We have always held firm to our principles of only working with manufacturers of the highest quality,” added Mark. “That started with Schneider in 1970, and we

“TES has been working closely with AJ Hurst for over 15 years and, as a testament to the responsive, quality service we have received throughout this period, we consider them to be a key partner rather than a supplier to our business. remain one of their longest-serving distributors in the UK and Ireland. The same can be said for Lutron, Phoenix Contact UK and Static Systems. By working with established companies, we can offer reliability.” Lisa added, “We are always looking to expand our range but we won’t add a new product just for the sake of it. It has to complement our current range and add something significant.” Looking ahead, maintaining the same level of service remains a priority, while building on recent successes in the GB market and an eye on expansion into the Republic of Ireland are also on the agenda. The continuation of the company’s progressive attitude is probably the best way to celebrate such a significant anniversary!

“We can’t speak highly enough of the team at AJ Hurst. We have worked with the company since the inception of Sperrin Switchgear 20 years ago and that relationship has not been broken in all that time. They are efficient, reliable, honest and genuine and provide a superb back-up service. It is for all these reasons that we view them as one of our best suppliers.” Niall McGuigan, Technical Director, Sperrin Switchgear.

“We started working with AJ Hurst a few years ago, first with control gear products and, more recently, lighting. We have been highly impressed with the quality of the products and, just as importantly, the high quality service.” Andrew McClenaghan, Director, B.I. Electrical.

Positive change at ECSSA Since the beginning of the year, ECSSA (Electrical Contractors Safety & Standards Association) has been operating as a trade and training association delivering technical and business advice to its members along with a variety of other services. Some of these services include accredited training courses, instrument calibration and technical publications. A number of training courses have been scheduled for the coming months including Verification Certification courses which will run until July and a series of Emergency Lighting courses, running until May. On January 1, 2016 all Registered Electrical Contractors (RECs) who were members of ECSSA at the end of 2015 will have automatically transferred to the new Safe Electric Scheme. Three information evenings were held last December to ensure RECs were aware of the changes arising as a result of the transfer and to answer any questions contractors had. Other news at the ECSSA includes plans to launch a new website which will provide details of new and helpful services to members and will also feature news updates on a regular basis covering any industry developments. As a world leader in diversified power management solutions, Eaton is able to provide a complete portfolio of electrical power protection, distribution and monitoring technologies. The experienced team also includes David Moore, Northern Ireland Account Manager, and Chris Orr, Northern Ireland Business Development Manager – both of whom are well known faces in the industry – along with the latest addition, Jason Hill, EWS Fire Account Manager. for their roles with Cooper Lighting and Safety but since the acquisition of electrical equipment supplier in 2012, Eaton has been able to expand the product portfolio. By capitalising on the Cooper’s proven capabilities in utility power distribution, smart grid, lighting, lighting controls, wiring devices, and safety solutions, Eaton has combined these specialisms with its own strengths in power quality, power distribution and energy services. Stephen Balfour, Northern Ireland Sales Manager, believes the new ‘One Eaton’ philosophy provides a wide range of advantages for customers. “We have such an extensive range on offer but this new approach makes it easier for customers to access these products,” he said. “With everything from switchgear MV/LV, lighting, wiring accessories, consumer units and fusegear through to fixings, UPS systems,

fire panels, emergency lighting, including CBU and static invertors, this gives us unique strengths and opportunities in the market. “We are really excited with the expansion of an already very successful team in Northern Ireland and are currently interviewing for a new member of the team.” Eaton provides a complete portfolio of electrical power protection, distribution and monitoring technologies including: • Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS) from the smallest home office to the largest hyperscale datacentre applications. • Intelligent software that allows the monitoring and control of Eaton hardware, plus management of IT virtual infrastructure. • In-rack power distribution with options for standard, metered, monitored and managed technology. • Medium voltage (1kV to 35kV)

Contractors know it’s a brand they can trust and it simplifies the process for them if they can source products from a single company.” As you would expect from a company the size of Eaton, all products are designed to meet latest industry standards and manufactured to the highest levels of quality. But this is enhanced with a company ethos that extends beyond the initial purchase of the products themselves. Eaton offers a fully professional presales and post-sales support function that includes technical support, contract management, BIM/Revit models, CAD and a full range of delivery, installation and life-cycle management services. David added, “We take pride in the service we deliver and being able to offer BIM/Revit models shows that we continue to embrace new technology. We proactively engage with customers to combine our products and service to build an overall solution that is right for each need.”

working hard to keep customers updated on the latest innovations...

Servicing the market and doing it well

A

constantly changing market doesn’t faze Brendan McGowan, Manager at Irwin Electrical in Letterkenny. “Our business is always adapting to meet the needs of an ever-evolving market. The strong relationships we’ve developed with our suppliers stand us in good stead and ensure information regarding new products and trends is quickly communicated. “We have the largest electrical stockholding in Donegal, so effectively we’re a one-stop-shop for a contractor or DIY professional. That’s a major advantage for us and when you couple that with the experience we have here, you can be sure of a quality service.” Having the backing of EWL and their extensive portfolio of products means Brendan and his team can meet the needs of virtually every customer who walks in their door. “When someone comes into the store with a query about a product or rings us up, they’re always going to get a direct, informative answer.” A huge selection of products is available at Irwin Electrical including lighting, lamps, cables, wiring accessories, domestic, commercial, industrial, switchgear and fusegear, control and automation, and cable management. The range also comprises ventilation, space heating, water heating, cable components and accessories, emergency lighting and fire detection, security access control, site electrics and supplies, tools and fixings, instrumentation and electronic components. “LED lighting is a major product for us at the moment,” says Brendan. “We’ve seen a major shift from standard incandescent lighting to

LED lights. It really is a constantly changing market, with new products hitting the floor every day.” All staff at Irwin Electrical are trained to the same high standard. “We strive to be one step ahead and really it’s our staff who make that happen.” No job is considered too small or too large - “It’s being under the EWL umbrella that allows us that flexibility. We service everything from a plug top to complex panels. Some of the independent guys currently operating in the market may not have the opportunity to offer the same levels of service.”

GREEN DEMAND An increasing market demand for energy-efficient products is also being met by Irwin Electrical, whether that be LED lighting or the technologically advanced heating products currently entering the market. “We’ve recently completed a few projects with hotels where we changed their existing storage heating or panel radiators to energy- saving, fully programmable systems. There’s a huge focus now on the greener side of the business and there’s also a growing emphasis on reducing our carbon footprint. We pride ourselves on the fact that we understand this demand and we’ve happily jumped on board.” Future plans at Irwin Electrical include building on current growth and continuing to adapt to the needs of a changing industry. “We’ve come out of the other side of the recession and right now

we’re showing very healthy growth. Things are looking good but we never lose sight of the fact that we need to stay on top of customer demands and ensure we stay knowledgeable about new products coming into the market. “You have to be prepared to change with the times. We are constantly analysing the market and we’re always very happy to adapt and change as required.”

LED Group ROBUS Award

LED Group ROBUS scooped a prestigious accolade at the recently held Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards…

And the award goes to… LED Group ROBUS!

L

ED Group ROBUS was named one of Ireland’s ‘Best Managed’ companies in the Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards Programme at a gala dinner in Dublin on March 4, hosted by RTE broadcaster Miriam O’Callaghan. The Deloitte Best Managed Companies Awards Programme, in association with Barclays Bank Ireland, recognises indigenous Irish companies across Ireland that are operating at the highest levels of business performance. The network of 115 ‘Best Managed Companies’ now employs over 47,000 people around the country and has a combined turnover of almost €10billion. LED Group had over 30% growth in turnover last year and has ambitious

growth targets for Ireland and overseas. Commenting on the award, Michael Slein, Founder and Director of LED Group, said, “The Best Managed Companies programme forced us to look in great detail at how we conduct our business across all areas and has helped us to make significant improvements to our 2020 plan. “We have a detailed 2020 financial plan and the programme made us stress-test that plan more rigorously than we might otherwise have done. It encouraged us to look at some areas where we could upskill ourselves, and we’re in the process of implementing those changes.” Last year, the firm created 20 new jobs in Ireland and expects to take on three project engineers in the UK this year. In more good news for the company, a new managing director has been appointed in Australia to support the anticipated doubling of business there over the next two years. To meet growth in demand, LED Group ROBUS has invested in upgrading its warehouse in Dublin; an extra 800 pallet spaces has been created while a move to voicerecognition picking will also allow the firm to expand comfortably. LED Group was one of 16 companies from around Ireland awarded Best Managed status for the first time this year. This came after a lengthy qualification and judging process in which the complete performance of a business is assessed, moving

beyond finances to areas like operational excellence, strategy and human resource processes. Furthermore, LED Group was singled out for a special recognition prize for ‘Excellence in Commitment’. The annual event included a symposium and, later that evening, more guest speakers joined the gala awards ceremony. Many speakers touched on the potential of Irish businesses to become the knowledge creators of Europe. Founded in 1984, LED Group ROBUS is headquartered in Dublin and now has branch offices in Britain, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Guangzhou in China. Over 200 people are employed worldwide. LED Group ROBUS is all set to exhibit its latest products in Frankfurt to current and potential new international buyers at the Light + Building expo, the world’s largest trade fair for lighting and building services technology. Here, LED Group ROBUS is launching its largest catalogue yet, featuring 30 new product ranges. By the end of 2016, LED Group will have doubled in size over a threeyear period. The company says it is at a point of transitioning, incorporating lifelong learning into its culture. Receiving the two awards from Deloitte has further highlighted the firm’s LED ambitions for the future. T: (RoI) 01 709 9000 or (NI) 00353 1 709 9000 W: www.ledgrouprobus.com

Job Management System

Mobile solution is helping improve the overall service on offer and enhancing efficiency levels…

WorkPal workflow management solution powers TES NI

R

esponsible for power conservation, distribution, water treatment and wastewater treatment throughout the UK, TES NI is now relying on WorkPal’s mobile workflow management solution to help the company manage its vital operations across the UK. TES NI’s IT Manager, Mark Cleary, explained why they trust and rely on the system. “Before WorkPal, assigning work was a difficult task. It was hard to know the location of our staff and who was best suited to carry out a work order,” he said. “This was particularly difficult with emergency response jobs. “Since implementing WorkPal, our head office team can now see exactly where our mobile staff are located and what they are doing. This visibility saves valuable time and gets our engineers to jobs quicker. “It also allows for all of our jobs to be fully transparent and traceable, with both the client and our office receiving paperwork in PDF format for faster invoicing. With WorkPal, this now happens automatically, which is a great help, as all the rates are built into the system.”

WORKPAL SOLUTION The WorkPal solution now enables TES NI to quickly send job details to an engineer’s mobile app, which they use on-site to complete documentation, take pictures, capture clients’ signatures and more. Once a job is completed, all the information is automatically synced back to the office. Invoices are generated, service histories are created and recurring maintenance is automatically scheduled.

Mark said, “We found working with the WorkPal team seamless when setting up our new system. The customer care before and after signing the contract has been excellent, which is very reassuring when investing in this type of software.” He added, “One of the biggest benefits we have noticed is our ability to respond faster to emergency jobs. Being able to see where all the engineers are and what they are working on lets our office team find the closest suitable engineer. “Before WorkPal, this process took a considerable amount of time. Now, it’s a matter of seconds. Our clients are experiencing a much better service and we are more competitive as a result. Everything is in real time, no information is lost, and everything is traceable with a tracking history.”

ENHANCED BUSINESS CAPABILITIES “Our customers are now getting a better insight into what work is being done and when. The app automatically notifies our customers when an engineer is on route, when they arrive and when the job is complete. Health and safety is also very important to us as a company so it’s great that WorkPal prompts our engineers to fill out risk assessments before every job. “By utilising the app, the GPS tracking and the storage of all paperwork automatically, and with the addition of simplified invoicing, we are now anticipating substantial cost savings over the next 12 months,” Mark explained. The biggest compliment you can give a service is a recommendation and Mark’s

response to whether he would advise others to use WorkPal was pretty clear. “Absolutely! We have already seen the commercial benefits of implementing WorkPal across our operations and have referred a number of our suppliers and customers to the WorkPal team. “The app has a focused number of features that make managing mobile workers much more efficient and will no doubt enhance our ability to manage our growing workforce and client base more effectively in years to come.” T: (NI) 028 9096 0366 or (RoI) 048 9096 0366 E: info@barclaycomms.com W: www.barclaycomms.com

In addition to this, the Prysmian FP product range continues to be a major performer in high-end specification projects while the ever-expanding product range now includes Permanoid cables, Bicon Components, copper B-Line and Beldin equivalents. Sean Cox, Sales Director at Precision Cables, said, “The telecom industry is the most recent specilised area of supply for us and having these quality products makes a significant difference. Everyone is looking for the highest levels of efficiency for their network infrastructure and with the quality and reliability of our product range that is exactly what we can offer.” Sean added, “Here at Precision Cables we are fully committed to brand awareness and are very

It has to suit our customer base and our route to market through the electrical wholesalers.” The quality of this product range is just one part of a double-pronged approach from Precision Cables that also includes a dedication to the highest levels of service. CONTROL PANELS

A firm that specialises in customised panels for control systems, Troy Panels is currently celebrating 10 years in business…

Troy Panels celebrates a decade of success

M

anufactured and tested to the highest specification, Troy Panels supplies a range of control panels to various sectors in Ireland and the UK. Products include Form 2 and 4 distribution panels, MCC boards, PLC controls, bespoke combination unit systems, panels for biomass burners and custom-built panels for the food and beverage sector. The firm is also a specialist when it comes to bespoke poultry controllers, electrical panels for custom-built grain drying facilities, panels for a wide range of ventilation systems, panels to control feeding systems and heating control systems. All the control panels are designed, built and programmed exactly to the clients’ needs within the firm’s own workshop. Not only does the company produce its own control panels but it also acts as a manufacturer for other control system requirements. Manufacturing is carried out in-house by a team of panel builders who have years of experience and who consistently achieve high levels of quality. “Each and every panel is built to the clients’ specification, and our efficient manufacturing techniques allow for an unusually fast delivery time and a cost-effective solution,” says Gareth Scott, Director at Troy Panels. “We also work very closely with machine manufacturers to solve automation issues from prototype design through to fully functioning machines.” Using the latest industry standards, Troy Panels works with companies to improve process flow, save time and ultimately costs. The team at Troy has found over the past few years that, with profit margins getting smaller, they’ve been approached by companies from almost every sector to help them improve a process or control system. The firm has been fulfilling this request through the use of PLCs (Programmable Logic Controllers). “These are basically

industrial computers that can be programmed to suit every application. They also have the flexibility to be user friendly with parameter inputs to be entered by a general operative via a touchscreen or webpage. These types of systems (depending on process) typically have a very quick payback time,” says Gareth. Typical automation examples provided by the firm include solutions to help improve or speed up a certain process within the food and beverage industry and control systems for energy-saving biomass burners. The firm also supplies power factor correction systems that reduce the effect that ‘inductive’ AC motors and light fittings have on energy costs. Power factor correction units add capacitance to cancel the inductance which causes the wattless hours. Troy Panels states that PFC units often pay for themselves in a matter of months, regardless of the initial cost. Managing energy going to motors in heavy

industry (for pumps, fans etc) can also lead to significant savings as, quite often, motors don’t need to be running at full speed all of the time. A reduction in speed of 10% reduces the energy used by some 27% and, if the speed is reduced by 20%, there is a 50% reduction in energy consumed. Variable speed drives, supplied by Troy Panels, allow for this reduction. According to Gareth, the best way for a company to save energy is to understand its energy consumption inside out. “Knowing how much energy each part uses, what is necessary and what is being wasted is extremely helpful. By following four simple steps, any company can reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. They just need to review the process, collect and analyse data, follow recommendation and implementation and continually review the process.” T: (RoI) 047 72265 or (NI) 00353 47 72265 W: www.troypanels.com

Case Study – Kilroot Power Station, County Antrim

Collaborative approach is the key to success at the largest energy storage array in the UK and Ireland…

Scotts Electrical Services and Hilclare Lighting power progress at Kilroot

A

leading Northern Ireland electrical contractor has recently completed the installation of the largest energy storage array in the UK and Ireland – and utilised the skills of Hilclare Lighting in the process. Scotts Electrical Services Ltd was the Balance of Plant contractor for AES UK & Ireland - part of one of the world’s largest power companies, The AES Corporation to create the UK’s largest battery energystorage facility at Kilroot Power Station, just outside Belfast. Officially opened in February, the Kilroot Advancion® Energy Storage Array provides 10 megawatts of interconnected energy storage, equivalent to 20 megawatts of flexible resource. This AES facility will increase the efficiency, flexibility and cost-effectiveness of the electric grid, placing Kilroot at the cutting edge of global power delivery and fundamentally sustaining the system upon which our society depends. Gordon Nixon, Managing Director of Scotts Electrical Services, is proud of the company’s involvement with the project.

“Not only it is the largest energy storage array of its kind in the UK and Ireland, but it is also the joint largest, to date, in Europe,” he said. “To be involved in a project of this innovative nature is a significant step forward for our company and one we plan to build on. “This work for AES is an ideal example of the Scotts’ ethos expressed through our slogan; Empowering Society. We employ our unequalled knowledge, experience and skills to help keep power flowing, wherever it’s needed; from homes and businesses to industries, airports and hospitals. “Through this approach, we installed the innovative new energy solution from AES, a major global player that is itself driven by the mission to ‘improve lives by providing safe, reliable and sustainable energy solutions’.” This highly complex installation was set against the challenge of a tight timescale, with the project getting underway in August 2015 and officially operational on January 1, 2016. Scotts Electrical Services delivered an engineered solution to make

the system as effective as possible. “We were under pressure although our professional team pulled out all the stops to hit the first deadline for substantial completion ahead of schedule and made sure we easily met the final completion date.” The company’s success is based around a collaborative approach and that was reflected in the lighting as design of the overall project. “We have worked extensively with Steven McMurray at Hilclare Lighting on a wide range of projects, so we were confident in their ability to deliver an effective solution within our overall design,” added Gordon. “Given the timescale and the unique challenges this project offered, we are delighted with the final result.”

CHALLENGE Steven McMurray, Northern Ireland Project Engineer for Hilclare Lighting, loves the opportunity of tackling a tough lighting challenge on projects such as Kilroot Advancion® Energy Storage Array. “This was a totally unique project for us and

highly specialised, so we were really put to the test,” he said. “There was very little that we could call upon in terms of past experience, so instead we had to use the skills we have developed across a wide range of projects. But we have a great working relationship with Scotts Electrical Services and having that in place helped us significantly. “With low ceilings and significant airconditioning ducting placed within a complex wiring structure, we had a lot of different variables to counteract. One of main issues was balancing energy efficient lighting with the CCTV monitoring of the site. We installed Catalona T5 fittings with individual sensors that dim when no-one is present but maintain a sufficient lighting level for CCTV monitoring. Getting the balance right between energy efficiency and practicality was massively important.” In addition to the BESA (Battery Energy Storage Array) rooms, Hilclare also designed a solution for the control room and transformer room, with Seville LED panels, Varas LED low bays and

Electrical Contractor St Joseph’s CONVENT PS AND St Clare’s Abbey PS, Co. Down

Simultaneously carrying out the electrical installation on two primary school projects in Newry puts experienced contractor to the test…

School test success for Braham Electrical

S

ince Braham Electrical completed its first education project, schools have changed significantly. Yet, on every project completed by the Warrenpointbased electrical contractor, there is one common denominator – quality. The company was established in 1972 and, over the intervening 40-plus years, Braham Electrical has completed numerous education projects ranging from work at primary schools through to universities. The work at St Joseph’s Convent Primary School and at St Clare’s Abbey Primary School and Nursery School – both located in Newry - was unique in that the company had to simultaneously balance the two

projects. But for such an experienced team, this didn’t cause too many issues. Stephen McQuaid, Director, Braham Electrical, explained “We successfully won the tender for St Joseph’s Primary School and we were delighted to again be teaming up with the main contractor, Felix O’Hare, and the consultant engineer, Delap & Waller – two companies that we have enjoyed long-standing relationships with. “About six months into working on St Joseph’s we were successful in winning the tender for the St Clare’s Abbey project. Again this was alongside Felix O’Hare and Delap & Waller. With those strong

relationships already in place, we were confident that we were able to meet the challenge of successfully completing the two schools.” Relationships are vitally important to Braham Electrical and it is clear that, in the time-sensitive environment where clients want projects completed to ever-tighter deadlines, the peace-of-mind that good rapport brings is an obvious benefit. Stephen added, “Regardless of whatever industry you are working in, people buy from people, and that is why we prefer to work with companies we can rely on,” added Stephen. “We are accustomed to working on many projects at the same

Two schools to the highest standard Braham Electrical has successfully carried out the complete electrical installation at two separate primary schools in Newry:

St Clare’s Abbey Primary School and Nursery School

“Regardless of whatever industry you are working in, people buy from people and that is why we prefer to work with companies we can rely on.”

This £5million new-build primary school and nursery school brings two former schools together onto one site. St Clare’s Primary School and St Colman’s Abbey Primary School previously operated on two single-gender sites and the opening of this new school marks the beginning of a new era. Catering for 400-plus pupils and comprising 15 classrooms, including special needs accommodation, the new school incorporates school meals accommodation, an assembly/ sports hall, office accommodation and a separate two-classroom nursery

time, but this was a little bit different in that it was two schools within a close proximity.” That is where the company’s logistical skills came into play. “We worked closely with Felix O’Hare and Delap & Waller before we moved on site to try and iron out any issues beforehand,” added Stephen. “With the best will in the world, what is planned on paper doesn’t always translate to site, so you’ll never get it perfect. But we will always try to ensure that a project runs as smoothly as possible, and we definitely saved time at both St Joseph’s and St Clare’s Abbey by making changes at the planning stage and taking a collaborative approach.” While building long-term relationships is important to Braham Electrical, the company is also forward-thinking – a necessity when working on education projects. Schools have changed extensively since the company first completed a new-build

education project, with modern learning environments benefitting from a plethora of new technology that includes the likes of interactive whiteboards, computers and controlled access control systems. All this has to be incorporated into an energyefficient system. “Both these projects included much of the innovative technology that is now commonplace in schools,” added Stephen. “From an electrical perspective, this all adds to a more complex installation, which again places an added emphasis on the initial planning.”

The opening of the new facilities for St Joseph’s Convent Primary School at Edward Street is the latest chapter in the success of a school that has been part of the education fabric of Newry for over 150 years. The £5.3million project has delivered a modern, progressive learning environment for the school’s 400-plus children, with facilities including a multipurpose hall, library and reading areas, shared spaces, play areas, all in a bright, open, contemporary style.

Electrical Supplier St Joseph’s CONVENT PS AND St Clare’s Abbey PS, Co. Down

Reliability is a key benefit from working with this dedicated electrical wholesaler, as the company proved on these two school projects…

Milltown Electrical Wholesale lightens the load

W

ith the sheer volume of products and accessories required to complete the construction of two new primary schools, Milltown Electrical Wholesale Ltd helped to lighten the load and ensure the project was able to run smoothly. Working closely with the electrical contractor, Braham Electrical, regular deliveries were made to the sites for St Joseph’s Convent Primary School at Edward Street in Newry and St Clare’s Abbey Primary School, which is also based in the city. As a reputable electrical wholesaler, the key to success for Milltown Electrical was in achieving planning perfection to ensure deliveries arrived exactly when they were needed by the electrical contractor. “We were at both sites at least once a day, delivering everything from cable baskets, trunking, cables and other accessories – basically all the supplies that are needed on every electrical project of this size,” explained Kevin Daly, Manager of Milltown Electrical. “Initially the focus was on St Joseph’s Convent PS but the project for St Clare’s

50 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

Abbey PS started a few months after that so we had to co-ordinate our delivery schedule to make sure we could utilise our deliveries as effectively as possible. “That required a lot of communication with the teams on each site and working closely with our own supply chain to ensure we had the products to hand. With all the planning that goes into every project, the last thing a contractor needs is to be let down by a missed delivery, so we work hard to make sure they have the equipment to get on with the job. “We were delighted to be able to achieve this for both these projects.” The high levels of service delivered by Milltown Electrical is high on the company’s list of priorities and the team works hard to provide consistency to every customer, regardless of the size of order. “But to be able to achieve such a great service you need to have the right stocks in place,” added Kevin. “We pride ourselves on our exemplary stock levels, not only in terms of the high levels of stock we have in place but the leading names in the industry

that we represent. “When you combine that all with competitive pricing then it all makes a big difference.” Making the most of its cross-border location, Milltown Electrical has built up a loyal customer base ranging from the domestic electrical installer to larger electrical contractors in both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland. A steady flow of customers at the trade counter is matched by deliveries up and down the coast twice a day. “We offer reliability and once we have had an opportunity to prove ourselves we are confident that customers will keep coming back,” concluded Kevin.

With that in mind, and a proven track record in this sector, leading manufacturer, Concord was awarded the lighting contract for both projects. Delivering energy-efficient systems to the two schools was one of the top priorities, and Concord supplied a range of tried and tested products throughout the buildings. At both schools, Braham Electrical placed its order for Concord’s lighting through KEW Electrical, Belfast. The project was carried out in conjunction with Braham Electrical, Warrenpoint and consultant engineer, Delap & Waller, Antrim. “We had a close working relationship with Delap & Waller during the design of the project and, later, a similar relationship with

Braham Electrical throughout the duration of the contract,” said George Montgomery, Senior Project Engineer, Concord. “We have been involved in a growing number of schools projects over the years, and therefore our expertise and experience in this specialist sector meant that we could provide added value on both school projects. “The vast majority of the school lighting is LED, which will assist in savings on power consumption, lamp replacement and maintenance costs. We are delighted at the final results in both schools.”

AS ONE OF THE UK’S FASTEST GROWING INDEPENDENT WHOLESALERS, KEW ELECTRICAL WAS ABLE TO PROVIDE A FAST AND EFFICIENT SERVICE ON BOTH SCHOOL PROJECTS…

Kew Electrical plays key supporting role

W

ith a well-deserved reputation for, quite literally, ‘producing the goods’, KEW Electrical ensured the electrical work at both St Clare’s and St Joseph’s was not held up for lack of supply products. Boasting an extensive stock, reliable service and same day delivery, the team at KEW played an essential role in the continued smooth running of both projects. The company enjoys a strong working relationship with Braham Electrical and was a natural choice when Braham was looking for a supply partner for its latest projects. Service just doesn’t get any better than with KEW Electrical, which was named Northern Ireland’s ‘Wholesaler of the Year’ at the Electrical Awards 2015. “It’s all part of the service, and we pride ourselves on being an integral part of the supply chain,” said David Adgey, KEW Electrical’s General Manager. “By providing a direct link with a wide range of leading

electrical manufacturers, it means that the electrical contractor has one point of contact to get the products they need, rather than having to chase multiple people.” This level of service is what customers have come to expect from KEW Electrical and, recently, this has also been recognised by the wider electrical industry. In addition to winning the Northern Ireland ‘Wholesaler of the Year’ title, the company also celebrated its 20th anniversary by being named as the ‘Best Electrical Wholesaler’ at the Electrical Wholesaler of the Year Awards in London. A philosophy of same day stock availability, handled by experienced, customer-focussed staff has resulted in KEW’s success story as one of the UK’s fastest growing independent wholesalers. KEW Belfast carries a stockholding of around £500,000, enabling it to service customer needs off the shelf in most cases, while a fleet of vans covers the whole of Northern Ireland each day. The company’s investment in its trade

counter facilities and showroom continues to pay off, as does a commitment to recruiting the best staff. David concluded, “Through careful recruitment and our apprentice scheme bringing new blood into the industry, we have a superb team of people offering a great service and high levels of professionalism. Whether you are a single tradesman or a major contractor, we are confident we can meet your needs.” To ensure competitive pricing, Kew is a key member of Fegime, one of Europe’s leading electrical buying groups.

This 170mm aluminium trunking proved the perfect fit on a previous school, the new Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagain in Belfast, and Core Electrical was delighted to be asked to supply it again at both St Joseph’s Convent and St Clare’s Abbey primary schools, as further evidence of its suitability for use in the educational sector. “We believe that the Bunscoil Bheann Mhadagain was the first school project in Northern Ireland to use the Elegance 170, and since then we have been successful in obtaining other school contracts, such as these two for Braham Electrical,” said Adrian McGarrity, Sales Director, Core Electrical (NI). Elegance 170 Aluminium (170x55mm) is hard-wearing, good-looking and lightweight, making it perfect for educational and office projects, where a robust yet stylish cable management solution with extra mechanical strength and a higher cable capacity is required. Solar Panels St Joseph’s CONVENT PS AND St Clare’s Abbey PS, Co. Down

Bespoke solar solutions put two County Down schools to the top of the class with optimum green credentials…

The future’s bright for Activ8 Energies

W

orking to achieve environmentally-friendly energy solutions, County Monaghanbased company, Activ8 Energies supplied a range of solar products to St Clare’s Abbey Primary School and Nursery School. “We used Suntech 270w black mono solar panels with black frames, which give an aesthetically pleasing finish on a tiled roof,” explained Gary Connolly, Head of Activ8 Energies’ PV Division. “They are MCS and SEAI certified and offer high-efficiency output in low light conditions. These top-rated, Tier 1 solar panels - as rated in Bloomberg New Energy Finance Tiering system - ensure that the solar panels are of the highest quality, from a manufacturer with a bankable reputation.” Activ8 also supplied a Solis 3 phase inverter, which boasts a highly efficient yield curve, 2 MPPT trackers, and a 10-year warranty - five more than the industry average. The solar mounting was a GSE ‘In Roof’ integrated roof-mounting system, which fits into the roof rather than sitting up above it. It is less obtrusive, and more aesthetically pleasing than the conventional mounting system. “The design element came about as a result of an issue on site - the roof was a Kingspan slate and tile support system,

54 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

which meant that all regular mounting systems compromised the weather-tightness of the roof,” said Gary. “After investigating our options, we sourced this ‘In Roof’ as the only way to ensure the weather-tightness of this system. A very positive plus side to this was that the integrated system looks extremely well on the roof, and does not take away from the architectural styling of the building.” Activ8 Energies worked with MGA Communications to integrate the monitoring of the system into the onsite BMS. “This allowed the system performance to be presented on the existing BMS, for expressing the school’s green credentials, whilst also providing an easy learning tool for the students,” Gary explained.

INDUSTRY LEADER Activ8 Energies is Ireland’s largest solar panel installer. Established in 2007 in Carrickmacross, by 2011 the company had almost twice as many installs as any other companies in Ireland, as measured by SEAI’s Greener Homes Scheme Solar Grants. In 2012, Activ8 Energies opened Solar NI as its solar PV arm in Northern Ireland, with a base in Newry. Using only the best products in the industry, the company became an installation and distribution partner with

Enphase Energies (Inverters), Schletter (mounting systems) and Suntech (solar panels). “Our work is varied and ranges from the likes of installing 100kWp systems on cinemas, right down to Part L compliant 1kwp systems on new-build housing developments,” continued Gary. “Having completed over 7,000 solar installations in Ireland, and as the only solar specialist in Ireland with ISO 9001 accreditation, we are uniquely positioned to work with companies like Braham Electrical on its commercial installations, and have enjoyed a great working relationship with Braham, whom we find to be an excellent electrical contractor. “In 2016, we see continuing growth in commercial solar installations throughout Ireland, and are available throughout the year for RIAI recognised CPD training on solar PV and its uses in Part L.”

Fire and Intruder Alarms St Joseph’s CONVENT PS AND St Clare’s Abbey PS, Co. Down

No cause for alarm with Radiocontact Ltd

F

ire and intruder alarms at St Joseph’s Convent Primary School were installed by Belfast firm Radiocontact Ltd. For both buildings – the nursery school and primary school - the two fire alarm panels were networked together so, if an activation occurs in the nursery school, a notification will appear on the unit in the primary school and vice versa. The MX4000 fire panel from Advanced was specified for the project. Fully compliant with EN54 part 2, 4 and 13, the MX5000 is also CE marked under the Construction Products Directive (CPD). Each panel has a high resolution LCD display with a high-tactile feedback membrane keypad; this combination provides an easy to use menu-based, high resolution, graphical user interface with simple select and click programming. On the intruder alarm side, Radio Contact installed control panels from Honeywell Security Group. Alarms from the Galaxy range were used on the school. This control

panel series is a fully integrated intruder and access control security solution, ideal for small to medium sized, Grade 3 security systems. The system’s panel options are based on a modular design that allows full customisation to meet specific needs. Radiocontact Ltd has been designing a diverse range of products for the security market for more than 30 years. The firm specialises in the design and installation of major security systems such as CCTV, intruder alarms, secure access control, public address, fire alarms and control systems for large industrial and government establishments and is a NACOSS Gold approved solution provider.

centrally it means that cable interference, from anything that may be plugged into the sockets, is avoided. With more complex charge-management software and circuitry being built into tablet computers, smart phones and E-readers, for example, the amount of current that the device will accept is limited. A device will go into protection mode when it recognises fluctuations within the power supply, resulting in reduced charge or no charge at all. Supply fluctuations can occur for a number of reasons, including the plugging in of another device into a neighbouring port. Utilising a single USB option eliminates the potential for this problem to occur. Scolmore’s single USB outlet provides a constant charge rate and guarantees charge, no matter what the device, and has proven to reduce the recharge time of devices. This USB technology has been integrated into the CLICK 13A 2 gang switched sockets with single 2.1A USB outlet. They are available within the Mode, Deco, Polar, Definity, Define and Metalclad ranges providing a total of 52 different plate designs and finishes. The Mode, Deco and Polar USB sockets can be fitted into a 25mm back box. Definity, and Define USB sockets require a 35mm back box and Metalclad USB sockets are supplied complete with a 40mm back box. Introducing the StudBox® StudBox® - part of CLICK® Essentials is a universal first fix electrical back-box system for dry lining applications which will significantly reduce installation time. It replaces the time-consuming and tedious practice of installing metal back boxes into stud walls attached to timber noggins, and will typically reduce the installation time down from five minutes to 30 seconds. There are plasterboard marking points on the corners of each StudBox® cavity which provide the exact position to cut out without the need for measuring. There are 3 products within the StudBox® range – 1 Gang (120mm – 600mm centres); 2 Gang (130mm – 600mm centres); and the Universal StudBox®. The Universal StudBox® (SB6IN1) has integrally moulded mounting flanges so that it can be hung between the faces of timber studs with centres between 380 and 450mm in a matter of seconds.

TOOLS AND TESTING

Megger’s new MIT400 Mk 2 range will change your thinking…

Think again about insulation testers

Megger’s new MIT400 Mk 2.

I

f you think all insulation testers are pretty much the same, it may be time to think again. Megger’s new MIT400 Mk 2 range proves that the technology has moved on. One particular feature of the new range is feedback-stabilised test voltage, which means the test voltage you select is actually the voltage the instrument uses. You may have assumed that this was always the case and if so, you might be surprised to know that the IET Wiring Regulations actually allow a variation of up to 20% on nominal insulation test voltages. That means when you set an ordinary insulation tester to 500 V, you could actually be testing at just 400 V or, possibly even worse, at as much as 600 V! Stabilised test voltage is convenient as you know for sure, without having to check, that the test voltage will always be within 2% of the value you’ve selected. While we’re talking about test voltages, it’s fair to say that most insulation tests are carried out at standard voltages – 250 V, 500 V or 1,000 V, for example. But there are cases, particularly with electronic items, where the manufacturer

www.elecmagazine.com

FOLLOW US ON:

“One particular feature of the new range is feedbackstabilised test voltage, which means the test voltage you select is the voltage the instrument uses.”

specifies some other voltage. With the new Megger MIT400 Mk 2 testers, this isn’t a problem, because many models allow the test voltage to be adjusted in 1 V steps over a very wide range. And then there’s battery life. Insulation test sets can be notorious battery gobblers, and the batteries always seem to run out at the most inconvenient time. This means that the extended battery life offered by the new testers – a minimum of 3,000 tests from a set of six ordinary AA batteries – is a very useful feature. Some Megger MIT400 Mk 2 series testers go even further by accommodating rechargeable cells that can be recharged without removing them from the instrument. These are a very convenient source of power and, over the life of the tester, they will save a lot of money. It’s a fair bet that most users will actually carry out more continuity tests than insulation tests! For this reason, a continuity test function with a fast reaction time is very important. Even a delay of 100 milliseconds or so soon becomes annoying if you’re carrying out a lot

of continuity checks. Megger’s new instruments not only offer fast-reaction continuity checking, they also offer a choice of continuity test currents – 200 mA and 20 mA. They’re not the only testers that do this, but for most others the maximum circuit resistance for a 200 mA test is just 10 Ω. With the latest Megger instruments, this limit is extended to a much more useful 20 Ω. Naturally, the new instruments incorporate all of the features traditionally associated with Megger products, including robust construction, reliability, convenience, ease of use and outstanding value for money. With all of this in mind, it may well be time to think again about your existing insulation tester. Is it past its prime? Are its limitations starting to show? And would your life be easier with a newer model? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then an instrument from Megger’s MIT400 Mk 2 range is the right choice for you! The Electrical Magazine looks at the new opportunities in the Republic of Ireland offered by PAT testing and the regulations in Northern Ireland…

Keep up to date with Amendment 3

E

Testing, testing

P

ortable Appliance Testing - or PAT Testing as it’s more commonly known - is now part of Irish legislation, providing a new opportunity for electricians in the Republic of Ireland. All businesses’ must carry out PAT Testing on all portable appliances to ensure the safety and welfare of employees and customers. In fact it’s imperative that businesses take heed of the legislation as the onus now falls squarely on the employer who is 100% responsible to carry out PAT Testing. Portable Appliances refers to any electrical equipment that can or could be moved from place to place. This might include office machinery (computers, copiers, fax machines), kettles, extension leads etc, usually having a lead with a plug attached. This type of equipment is naturally more susceptible to damage than fixed electrical equipment, is more likely to be used in different environments and is quite often directly in contact with the user. The Safety, Health and Welfare at Work (General Application) Regulations 2007 state that portable equipment that’s supplied at a voltage exceeding 125 volts alternating current and is exposed to conditions causing deterioration that could result in danger should be visually checked by the user before use. Equipment should also be regularly inspected by a competent person, appropriate to the nature, location and use of the equipment. Furthermore, to comply with regulations records must be kept for at least five years for random spot checks carried out by the HSA. Irish insurers/ underwriters are now requesting proof that all portable appliances comply with the legislation prior to the renewal of existing or commencement of new policies. PAT Testing has many advantages for companies. Some of the key benefits include improved safety in the workplace as well as for the general public; reduced insurance costs; decrease in liability; enhanced preventative maintenance; increased productivity through safe and reliable equipment; and reduced legal risks for managers. For electricians, highlighting these advantages alongside the new legislation could provide a wide range of new opportunities. For more information on PAT Testing regulations, visit www.hsa.ie or telephone (RoI) 1890 289 389 or (NI) 00353 1890 289 389

lectricians have been reminded to ensure they are following the changes made to the model forms of certification and reporting in BS 7671 which came into force on July 1, 2015 as part of the 3rd Amendment to the 17th Edition. Appendix 6 focuses on this issue. The schedule of inspections (for new work only) has been replaced by examples of items requiring inspection during initial verifications (which must be appended to the Electrical Installation Certificate). This is in addition to asmall number of changes to the Electrical Installation Condition Report and associated notes have been made, including a requirement to carry out an inspection within an accessible roof space where electrical equipment is present in that roof space. For the Electrical Installation Certificate, a new section has been added on the first page of the Electrical Installation Certificate for details to be recorded of any permitted exceptions to Regulation 411.3.3. This relates to where additional protection for one or more socket-outlets rated at 20A or less by an RCD has been omitted on the basis that a documented risk assessment has determined that such protection is not necessary. This exception may be used only for an

installation other than in a dwelling. Where the exception is used, a copy of the risk assessment must be attached to the certificate as required by Regulation 411.3.3. Other changes include an expansion to the section where details of the main protective bonding conductors of the installation are to be recorded while, in the notes of guidance for recipients, a change has been made to the note that points out that, for safety reasons, the installation will need to be inspected at appropriate intervals. Instead of referring to ‘a competent person’, the note now refers to ‘a skilled person competent in inspection and testing of electrical installations’. The existing Schedule of Inspections for the Electrical Installation Certificate has also been deleted while, amongst other changes to Part 3 (Essential Tests) of the Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate, the fields for insulation resistance test readings to be inserted have been changed from ‘Line/ neutral’, ‘Line/earth’ and ‘Neutral/earth’ to ‘LiveLive’ and ‘Live-Earth’. Klauke launches new wide-range bootlace ferrule crimping tool…

Simple solution from Klauke

W

ith the K 30/6 K, Klauke has introduced a neat solution for crimping insulated and non-insulated bootlace ferrules from 0.08 – 16mm2 onto the market. Normally to cover this range of wire sizes, an installer would typically require at least three different tools. Now with just a single tool, the installer can keep the weight and cost of his tool bag to a minimum. The clever mechanism has a smooth ratchet control which moves six precise jaws, producing a neat hexagonal crimped result. This has the benefit of ensuring the termination remains as round as possible, fitting directly into the equipment without any need for ‘rounding’ square corners. To ensure the ferrule is always located exactly in the middle of the jaws, a clever positioner has been added to keep the ferrules centred. This guide can be relocated on the reverse side for left-handed users. Under the part number K306K, it can handle both single and double-entry ferrules and possesses the quality you would expect from a German-made product. It features non-slip handles and a name tag field inside the handle to identify it’s yours.

The launch of the K 30/6 K is part of a wide range of impressive products developed by the experts at Klauke. The new product is available from all branches of Demesne Electrical Sales. Top designers have come up with effective improvements to side cutting pliers...

Bahco gives electricians the cutting force they need

A

scientific study of cutting force when using side-cutting pliers led Bahco’s tool designers to conclude that the first penetration of the blade is the only part of the process which requires maximum force, so at that point a comfortable hand position is absolutely vital. Once the wire or cable has cracked, the cutting blades only separate the two parts by extending the crack, so the amount of force required is substantially reduced. The Swedish designers looked closely at the shank width, too. They discovered that some cutting pliers provide optimum grip when the pliers are closed and no force is needed. So they designed side cutters to give optimum grip when they are opened to a span of between 55 and 60mm. And when the Bahco design team compared the leverage needed to cut 2mm hard wire, they used their research findings to develop heavy duty side cutters which need 25% less effort than standard cutters. They also looked at different applications, including the use of insulated cutting pliers for work on live equipment up to 1000 volts. This resulted in Bahco’s 2101S insulated side-cutting plier, which complies with IEC 609000. Made from high performance alloy steel, it has edges which are induction hardened at 62 HRC and a cutting radius optimized to cut both soft and hard wires. Bahco’s designers devised and patented a new type of On-Off return spring, which increases the ease of cutting with an automatic opening of the jaws. The brand’s ergonomic heavy duty pliers, 2101HDG, provide a sturdy cut all over the blade and will cut up to 3mm of piano wire, even in extreme site and weather conditions. They are designed to outlive more than 50,000 cuts of hard wire, while protecting even the toughest hands. T: (NI) 01709 731 731 or (RoI) 0044 1709 731 731 W: www.bahco.com

Apprenticeships

According to the CIF, apprenticeships within the electrical sector are on the up. Good news for the industry, but there’s still some way to go…

A lot done, more to do I n its 2016 manifesto, the Construction Industry Federation (CIF) is calling on the new Government in the Republic of Ireland to create a policy framework that will allow the industry to forge ahead with development and continue its current levels of growth. Key to this growth is skills and employment and a big element of this is apprenticeships. There’s no doubt that the industry as a whole needs more apprentices. Some areas are doing better than others; no apprentices in floor and wall tiling for example have been recorded in the past two years while numbers in plumbing have increased from 318 in 2014 to 330 in 2015. On the electrical side, 845 apprentices were recorded in 2014. This rose to 875 in 2015. “This is certainly a healthy enough increase but there’s scope to do more. We’ve been very busy creating and developing relationships with Education and Training Boards (ETBs) and SOLAS to create more opportunities for people who are interested in taking up an apprenticeship,” says Tom Parlon, Director General at the CIF. The landscape in construction has changed, says Tom, and this has had an impact on the numbers being taken on for

www.elecmagazine.com

“A lot of firms that have taken on apprentices who are now project managers and site managers. These are the guys that are most likely to stay with you.”

FOLLOW US ON:

apprenticeships. “From the point of view of the CIF, one of the issues on the electrical side is that main contractors are diversifying and becoming more project management-led. These firms are no longer taking on apprentices, they’re employing specialists, so it’s now down to these firms to take on apprentices. We’re going to have to encourage these specialist firms to be more proactive when it comes to apprenticeships, which can be a difficult task when a company mightn’t be certain of their future workload.” According to Tom, the CIF is working with the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, ETBs and SOLAS to come up with ways around this difficulty. Initiatives with the likes of JobPath, the service that caters mainly for people who are longterm unemployed (ie, over 12 months), will hopefully push the situation. “We’re trying to put specific training courses in place that will bridge the gap between the employers who are actively looking for skilled workers and the people on the live register who want a job.” A pilot scheme involving main contractors and workers is currently in its infancy but, if successful, could prove useful in

helping to solve the industry’s skills gap. “Apprentices are imperative in the industry. For so many firms, they build a commitment to your company. We have a lot of firms that have taken on apprentices who are now project managers and site managers. These are the guys that are most likely to stay with you. “The biggest by far percentage of apprentices that have come on board and qualified in Ireland have come through construction, so the sector owes a lot to this group.” If current growth figures are anything to go by, apprentices and skilled workers are set to become even more sought after. Based on recent CSO figures, the industry will need at least 45,000 new construction workers if it’s to achieve its sustainable level of 12% of GNP. In 2015, there were 20,000 workers with construction skills on the live register. Getting these people back to work is key, says Tom. “We also face a challenge in trying to encourage back the 100,000 plus skilled workers that emigrated during the downturn. We’re seeing that happen at the moment but we still have a way to go.” T: (RoI)) 01 406 6000 or (NI) 00353 1 406 6000 E: contact@cif.ie W: www.cif.ie

heating controlS connection system

Klik, supplied by Chronotherm Controls Ltd, makes installing a home heating system child’s play…

As simple as ‘Klik’

C

hronotherm Controls Limited has been supplying Klik, a secure heating controls connection system, to the market since early 2015. Co-designed by Hager, Chronotherm and Vintero, Klik provides mechanical and electrical connection in one plug-in action. The advantages to using the Heating Klik system are significant, explains Tom Noone, Managing Director at the company. “Using the considerable electrical knowledge of Terry Kelly of Vintero, who has over 30 years’ experience in electrical heating controls installation and working closely with Hager and Chronotherm, Heating Klik was designed to cut out a certain amount of wiring that an electrician or plumber has to do when installing a home-heating system. Up to recently, the norm was to use a multi-block connector wiring centre, which can be quite a messy job. This process is eliminated by Klik, a semi pre-plug system that fits onto a connector box.” An additional and significant advantage of the new Klik system is the ability to perform mandatory test requirements such as loop impedance and RCD testing. Klik also provides motorised valve actuator isolation which may become a mandatory requirement in the near future. With the new product, motorised valves actuators can be plugged-in in seconds, without circuit isolation and provide full interlock, as required under Part L of the UK and Irish building regulations. The nonwander design also prevents disconnection of the plug from its socket by vibration or snatch withdrawals. The Klik product exceeds relevant standard requirements and also allows for compliance with IEE wiring regulations and safety regulations. Safety is a major factor with Heating Klik. Mechanical and electrical connections made in one ‘click-in’ action save time and allow for safe installation. Designed for on load isolation, Klik allows individual motorised valves to be removed for maintenance without affecting other heating controls on the circuit. As already mentioned, maintenance testing and installation tasks can be carried out speedily and safely. All plug-in connectors are factory prewired and sealed. In addition each plug-in connector is colour coded so

as to indicate which heating or hot water zone it relates to: • • • •

Heating Zone 1 has a ‘White’ indicator Heating Zone 2 has a ‘Black’ indicator Hot Water Zone has a ‘Red’ indicator Blank Connector has a ‘Blue’ indicator

Programmer and thermostats are wired into a Klik Marshalling Box which can cater for up to three zones. The Marshalling Box has seven copper bus bars, each dedicated to specific tasks: • • • • • • •

Room Stat 1 Room Stat 2 Cylinder Stat Permanent Live Neutral Earth Switched Live Out

The plug-in connectors are designed similar to a key and only Zone 1, for example, will activate when the relevant Klik connector is attached to the Marshalling Box (hence the importance of the connector colour coding). Another advantage of the key type plug-in connector is that it is impossible to misconnect the various zones at the Marshalling Box. Each Marshalling Box has a fourth connection point. This is where the blank connector is fitted. This is done for safety reasons. However, the great advantage of the fourth connection point is that this is where loop impedance and RCD testing can be performed, using appropriate testing equipment (nearly all makes of test meters are suitable for use). All plugs are factory pre-wired using the CTC motorised valve actuator plug-in cable, in Hager’s UK manufacturing facility. This plug-in cable is designed for use with Chronotherm’s CTC brand of motorised valves. The range consists of a quick release actuator and valves suitable for either imperial or metric sized copper pipe. The actuator is also equipped with a Power On LED and comes with a white cover. Heating Klik was launched onto the Irish market early last year and has been demonstrated at trade shows during 2015. “We’re slowly but surely getting it out onto the market and we’ve been having an

excellent response from the industry. Klik also complies with proposed upcoming regulations and when passed, these regulations will certainly make the product more mainstream,” says Tom. Another benefit of Klik is faster installation time which makes a significant contribution to both the on-site wiring and on-going maintenance costs. “The product allows contractors to isolate the zone valves which may be called for under the new regulations,” adds Tom. Klik is currently being used on sites in Dublin and proving successful.

Take a closer look… Klik will be on display on the Chronotherm Controls stands at the following exhibitions in 2016. • Plumbex, Citywest Hotel, Dublin 25th-26 May • Plumb Power Heat Light, Titantic Exhibition Centre, Belfast - 7th-8th September • Electrical Trade Show, Citywest Hotel, Dublin - 5th/6th October

EMERGENCY LED LIGHTING

With all mounting options available in the one box, the new Fusion LED exit sign from Ventilux is the ideal option for installers…

Light up with Fusion LED

L

aunched onto the market only very recently and already proving popular with contractors, the Fusion LED is an extremely flexible, economic, panel-edge-lit EXIT sign product that comes fitted with an LED lamp source. The EXIT sign is easy to install and maintain, says Ryan Walsh, Sales & Marketing Manager at Ventilux, and provides installers with a variety of options. “With other fittings, you would have to specify what panel direction you’d need but, with this product, it’s all available within the one box. Directional legends make the work a whole lot easier for contractors.” While other products may be limited to side-wall mounted or recessed fittings, the Fusion LED comes with all mounting options. “The box contains both a ceiling bracket and a recessing kit. It’s also very competitively priced when compared to products that are limited to just one mounting option. The Fusion LED is the first of three products that Ventilux intends to launch this year. “We hope to introduce the OptiLens escape route LED luminaire onto the market by early summer. A typical LED downlighter gives you spacing of about 8.5 to 10m; the OptiLens will give approximately 18 to 20m on an escape route corridor. “Again, for a contractor, this product will have both the open plan and the escape route option in the box available to them when they open it up on site, so there’s no need to order one or the other.” “The OptiLens will be included in our premium range. It’s also worth noting that this product will reduce the quantity of luminaires being used on an overall project. So for the installer, that will mean fewer materials to use on a project. It will also end up saving the enduser money as they won’t have to

www.elecmagazine.com

replace as many batteries when undertaking maintenance.” Ventilux will also launch the MultiLux this year, a multi-mounted exit sign. “This product will feature a downlight to provide additional coverage on the escape route of approximately 2.5m. It will include all mounting options within the one box.” It looks like 2016 is going to be a very busy year for Ventilux; as well as launching three new products, the company is celebrating its 30th anniversary year with a move to larger premises at Bray IDA Business Park on the Southern Cross Road later this year. At more than twice the size of the firm’s previous base, the new 30,000sqft premises will provide a state-ofthe-art manufacturing facility. The relocation will also help Ventilux service its wide-ranging client base in an even more efficient way. T: (RoI) 01 214 8800 or (NI) 00353 1 214 8800 W: www.ventilux.com

F

ounded in 2001, the Irish Electrical Benevolent Association (IEBA) continues to make a real difference to the lives of families who have fallen on hard times. The main objective of the association is to provide short-term financial support to colleagues and their families in the electrical industry in the Republic of Ireland that have experienced difficulties with bereavement, illness, accident, redundancy etc. To qualify for assistance an individual would need to have worked in the electrical industry and have a requirement for financial assistance. The overall administration of the IEBA is entrusted to an elected Board of Trustees, all of whom are unremunerated. A subcommittee (Appropriations Committee) is appointed to consider all applications for assistance, clearly establish the nature of distress and the short-term financial support the applicant needs to relieve this distress. The service is free, confidential and independent. In 2015 a Munster branch of the IEBA was established and it’s hoped that, in 2016, more branches will be created. Over the last 15 years the IEBA has distributed almost €600,000 – money which hundreds of supporters from all sectors of the electrical industry have contributed. Through this generosity the charity has been able to help over 100 families.

Recent reports show tender prices rise by 2.8% as SCSI highlights lack of electrical sub-contractors…

Construction recovers but where are the skilled trades?

P

ublished by the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland (SCSI), the latest Construction Tender Price Index has revealed that tender prices increased by 2.8% in the second half of 2015. According to the Society, tender prices for building projects increased by 5.5% during 2015, a rise that shows an upward trend in tender prices since 2011. This increase is down to several factors, one of which is the lack of electrical and mechanical specialists, particularly in the Greater Dublin Area. Commenting on the news, Chairman of the Quantity Surveying Professional Group at the SCSI, Micheál Mahon, said, “As activity levels in the construction sector have increased so also have costs, due to material cost increases and capacity constraints. This is occurring in a number of regions, but is a particular issue in the Greater Dublin Area. Here, the shortage of skilled trades/specialist sub-contractors and professionals, such as mechanical and electrical, curtain walling and joinery, who are available to take on the increased level of construction activity, is a real issue.“ Micheál added that the rise in tender prices also comes down to a question of supply and demand. “A lot of companies have not scaled up over the past couple of years and are limited in the amount of work they can physically undertake. Accordingly, they are only taking on a select number of contracts from an increasing supply of work. Overall, while the continuing economic recovery is having an impact on tendering/pricing levels, the market remains very competitive with tender prices currently at 2000 levels.” Tender prices peaked in the first half of 2007 and fell rapidly for the following four years before levelling off in the second half of 2010/first half 2011 when prices were down 33% from the peak. The Society expects the index to show an increase again in July as suppliers increase their prices and capacity constraints continue. Micheál said the sector needed to create a more stable environment with the appropriate level of construction output for a country this size. “Recently, the President of the SCSI, Andrew Nugent, called on the parties

which will form the next Government to appoint a Senior Minister with responsibility for Planning, Property and Construction. This would be a way of recognising the importance of the sector to the national economic recovery and also enable the drawing up of a cohesive plan for the longterm sustainability of the sector,” Micheál concluded.

GRADUATE SHORTAGE Recently, the Association of Consulting Engineers of Ireland (ACEI), Engineers Ireland and the SCSI said the country won’t have enough graduates to meet the future demands of the construction sector. All three bodies warned that the lack of college-leavers has become a “critical concern”. The director general of Engineers Ireland, Caroline Spillane, stated that the crash resulted in students turning away from construction courses and added

that there is a huge demand for various engineering skills to meet the criteria of the Government’s house-building plan. “Electrical, civil, technological and construction-related engineering skills are in great demand to meet the requirements of our growing economy and to deliver on the government’s capital plan which includes major development of infrastructure and housing over the next six years and beyond,” she said. On a more positive note, recent reports have indicated a significant jump in CAO applications to architecture, engineering, construction and business-related courses as college applicants flock to third-level courses linked to the economic recovery. Good news for the future but not so good for current demand; it’s expected that 2,000 jobs will be created in construction by 2019, with Irish graduates only filling half of them.

ELECTRICAL LICENCE

SparkSafe Licence to Practice system is now formally part of the Government’s procurement policy and best practice…

Northern Ireland’s electrical contractors lead the way

N

orthern Ireland is currently leading the way in the UK, with the industry’s electrical Licence to Practice (LtP)

system. The LtP initiative has become subject to a formal Procurement Guidance Note (PGN). PGN’s are the administrative means by which Government departments are advised of procurement policy and best practice developments. The LtP initiative has been applied to all appropriate Government construction contracts from February 1, 2016. This means that procurement and contract documentation issued from this date, will contain the requirement that the main contractor, electrical contractor, sub-contractor and electrical workers are registered with the LtP System for specified projects.

How does LtP work? The industry’s LtP initiative is the first of its kind in the UK. The initiative requires that only licenced electricians and workers are employed to undertake electrical installation work on behalf of Government clients. This means that electrical workers employed on Government construction contracts must register online. A unique system has been developed that connects the competency of individual electrical workers, on a project by project basis, by licence type. This appears in the form of an online workforce composition report, providing the client with visibility, transparency and reporting tools that deter fraud and encourage improved contract performance.

Why was IT developed? Quality improvement and value for money are the drivers for LtP. At the present time, there are circa 2,500 to 3,000 practicing electrical workers in Northern Ireland. Over half of these workers are dependent on projects emanating from the Public Sector. Significant numbers of electrical workers are either unqualified or underqualified, for the work that they are tasked to carry out. LtP is aimed at providing the client with a resource to discern and select the preferred electrical contractor, based on the competency and composition of their direct and sub-contracted workforce. The

86 | ELECTRICAL MAGAZINE

system is primarily designed to highlight the competency of electrical workers to the client. A secondary purpose of the system, is to help motivate and steer unqualified and underqualified workers to meet acceptable client and industry standards.

Monitoring and compliance It is important that implementation of the LtP requirement is monitored throughout the project. As part of this, the main contractor will be required to provide appropriate evidence to demonstrate compliance with the LtP requirements. This includes, but is not limited to, verification via self-declaration by the main contractor; by carrying out onsite identification checks of electrical workers against records held in the LtP database; by facilitating random onsite inspections by the LtP system provider; and by reports extracted from the LtP system indicating the composition of the electrical workforce by Licence Type.

Next steps 1. If you are a main contractor and are wholly or partly dependant on Public Sector contracts, you are advised to register your business details within the ‘Main Contractors’ section of the website www.sparksafeltp.co.uk. Registration for

main contractor is free . 2. If you are an electrical contractor wholly or partly dependant on Public Sector contracts, or if you are seeking opportunity to tender for Public Sector work, you are advised to register your business details on the ‘Electrical Contractors’ section of www.sparksafeltp.co.uk. Registration for electrical contractors is £485 per annum. 3. If you are an electrical worker, now is a good time to self-assess the requirement for an electrical licence. Electricians and apprentices working exclusively in the private sector will not be obliged to apply for a licence. However, some may wish to do so, on the basis of providing their private sector clients with an online option to independently verify their photographic identity by licence type. The system is designed to provide you with independent access to the licensing system. A charge of £140 for a three-year licence is payable by the electrical worker. This means that you retain ownership and control over your licence. The revenue is used to fund the maintenance of the IT system, the essential administration processes, and the development of the interest of the licence holders. upils of St Patrick’s Armagh made the right connections during a visit to the ETT Armagh Centre in February. ETT’s lecturing and assessment staff provided the assembled audience with a tour of the facilities, and an overview of what it’s like to be an electrician and work in the electrical industry. ETT staff provided a useful insight into the excellent support and resources at the ETT Armagh Centre, and explained how these would be used to help steer the next generation of local school leavers, to become qualified electricians. The prospective apprentices had an opportunity to roll their sleeves up for a go at some hands-on exercises. This included bending and threading 20mm galvanised steel conduit. Speaking on behalf of ETT, Craig McNeilly said, “I think the pupils learnt that being an electrician is much more than working with cables and hand tools. The modern electrician must be a highly skilled, flexible worker, who is able to provide the quality workmanship and services required in an industry that is constantly changing.”

NICEIC

NICEIC OFFERS DATA CABLING TRAINING COURSES FOR INSTALLERS IN RESPONSE TO TREND FOR SMART HOME TECHNOLOGY…

Data cabling offers up opportunities for electricians

T

he rapid advancements in technology have altered the way we work and are increasingly changing the way we

live. More and more people are now implementing smart home technology into their properties, enabling them to control a wide variety of services via their phone or tablet computer. Such is the advancement in wireless technology that home-owners can now monitor and manage energy use efficiently, with heating, cooling or lighting technologies reacting to the presence of people in a room or to changes in temperature or external light levels. As the UK’s largest regulatory body for electrical contractors, NICEIC has been discussing the merits of home automation for many years now. For reliable operation, these home networks depend on a strong electrical/data cabling infrastructure – a

clear point of entry for electrical contractors. A growing number of installers are now moving into this area as even more householders adopt new technologies in their homes and, in response, NICEIC has set up two distinct training courses for installers looking to move into this area. The courses, data cabling for commercial installers and data cabling for domestic installers, provide a balanced mix of theory and practice relating to structured cabling systems. They provide delegates with adequate knowledge, confidence and practical experience for future supervision and assessment of system installations. The one-day course covers the concepts

of structured cabling systems, the types of cable used, depending on the installation environment, and practical tasks associated with installing, terminating and commissioning structured cabling networks. T: (NI) 0870 013 0389 E: traininginfo@niceic.com W: www.niceic.com

BlueSky recently launched the Crystal Trust, the UK’s first trust-based, managed flexible drawdown plan and is open to any employer, pension scheme or individual. At retirement, a transfer of pension rights into the Crystal Trust will enable individuals to receive a tax-free lump sum and pension income. In the new world of flexible savings which includes pension changes, there is more control and freedom of choice available through Crystal, where historically, individuals had to make a single irreversible decision and buy an annuity. There are no set-up fees or minimum terms when joining Crystal, with investment and drawdown options starting at just 0.75% per annum.

Further details can be found by visiting www.crystaldrawdown.uk. For further information on how BlueSky can help your business, visit www.blueskypensions.uk or contact info@blueskypensions.uk.

A lot of space on two levels

Venture showcases new VLED range

n The TS 8 modular enclosure system from Rittal offers many well thought-out solutions that are not available elsewhere. The central element is the frame section of the TS 8 with its uniform 25-mm pitch pattern. Equipment can be installed very flexibly and ‘wasted space’ due to the limitations of the mounting options is practically non-existent. In addition to the frame section, two mounting levels are available that are used for installation. By using the external mounting level, up to 15% more space is available in the enclosure than with a single-level alternative. n Venture Lighting Europe has unveiled its newly introduced range of VLED luminaires, including its VLED Integrated Driver Technology (IDT) system for outdoor floodlights, industrial and commercial plus road lighting applications. The new Westminster VLED module and retrofit LED solution is specially designed for street lighting using Venture’s SUPRAX® glass optics, offering exceptional benefits to local authorities. Electrical safety assured with Rittal’s TS 8 baying system n The TS 8 baying system from Rittal is a great example of how safety can be built-in through automatic potential equalisation without necessarily having to separately earth each individual panel. To help limit the risk of human error when attaching earthing straps, Rittal has developed an effective solution with the TS 8 bayed enclosure system. During the assembly phase, the side panels, enclosure roof, rear panel and gland plates are automatically connected to the frame conductively.
