FOYLEFILMFESTIVAL.ORG

WELCOME WELCOME to the 29th Foyle Film Festival Education Programme, which includes a diverse range of local and international films and digital workshops, exploring this year’s theme MAGIC & WONDER. The primary programme launches with the magical animation Storks, a company that used to deliver babies but now delivers packages worldwide. When the company’s top delivery stork accidentally activates the ‘Baby Making Machine’, it forces the organisation to re-evaluate its true vocation in life. Kubo And The Two Strings is the story of a young Japanese boy who makes a living for himself and his mother by telling tales to the local townsfolk. His simple existence is thrown into turmoil when some shady figures from his past come back into his life, pushing him to embark on a sacred quest to find a magical suit of armour that belonged to his late father. Boy And The World is an amazing Brazilian animation that truly illustrates the power of imagery and music to deliver a powerful and deep message. If there ever was an easy way to teach primary-aged children about our global footprint and the perils of corporate capitalism, then this film delivers. The post-primary programme includes special screenings of visionary director Tim Burton’s latest movie Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, a secret refuge where young Jake discovers clues to a mystery that spans alternate realities and times. In the Palestinian drama The Idol, aspiring musician and Gaza refugee Mohammed Assaf prepares to compete in the 2013 edition of 'Arab Idol'. His journey ultimately leads him to make the dangerous crossing into Egypt for the first auditions of the competition in Cairo where he hopes to impress enough to make it onto the main show as a symbol of hope for Palestine.

Life, Animated is the wondrous true story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films. This inspirational film provides parents and teachers with a great insight into working with children with autism. CCEA’s Moving Image Arts (MIA) Showcase is Foyle Film Festival’s annual celebration of the talent, imagination and creativity of the MIA students. City of Derry Crystal Awards are presented to the successful students on the day as part of this special ceremony. The Nerve Centre’s Creative Learning Centre team will also bring Foyle Film Festival’s Education Programme into schools giving students a unique opportunity to use fun ICT skills in the classroom in order to explore the festival themes. As well as film screenings in Brunswick Moviebowl, the programme gives teachers the opportunity to screen a series of educational films in their own school. More details in the programme. We look forward to welcoming you all soon. Bernie McLaughlin Foyle Film Festival Director & Programmer

“ A truly unusual cinema experience that harks back to the days of early animation which used simple techniques to dazzle for a purpose, this is well worth catching.” Jennie Kermode, EyeForFilm

From the creators of Shrek comes DreamWorks Animation’s Trolls, a smart, funny and irreverent comedy about the search for happiness, and just how far some will go to get it. This hilarious film transports audiences to a colourful, wondrous world populated by the overly optimistic Trolls, who have a constant dance in their step and a song on their lips, and the comically pessimistic Bergens, who are only happy when they have trolls in their stomachs. After the Bergens invade Troll Village, Poppy, the happiest Troll ever born, and the overly cautious curmudgeonly Branch set off on a journey to rescue her friends. Together, this mismatched duo embark on a rescue mission full of adventure and mishap – trying to tolerate each other long enough to get the job done.

Bodi, a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff, is expected to become the next village guard to a group of fun-loving, countryside sheep, but fears he doesn’t have the passion to assume the role from his dad, Khampa. Everything changes when a radio literally falls out of the sky and Bodi hears a song by rock legend Angus Scattergood, opening his heart to a musical world he must explore. Leaving home to chase his destiny in the big city, Bodi attracts the attention of Khampa’s nemesis, Linnux. Leader of a hungry wolf pack, Linnux believes that Bodi is his ticket back into the village and closer to delicious sheep. It is up to Bodi to save his family and friends from harm without giving up his newfound dream.

The Nerve Centre’s Creative Centenaries project has been bringing a digital approach to help young people learn about and understand the impact of 1916, as well as creating cutting-edge resources such as animations and curriculum-linked comic books to further explore themes from the time. These engaging workshops will allow students to examine the impact and legacy of the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme like never before.

A young girl in northern Spain is fascinated by her father’s mysterious past and his childhood in the pre-civil-war south. Spain’s enigmatic master Victor Erice has completed only three features since 1973, but each one is an exquisite masterpiece. El Sur is the second of these, a film that endured torrid production difficulties and a troubled distribution history – but whose power and beauty endures. It has a mythical quality and is studded with moments of haunting beauty and immaculately constructed compositions.

From Academy Award® winning director Roger Ross Williams, Life, Animated is the inspirational true story of Owen Suskind, a young man who was unable to speak as a child until he and his family discovered a unique way to communicate by immersing themselves in the world of classic Disney animated films.

Pedro Almodovar chose the film in a selection of great Spanish works screened at BFI Southbank, and he said of it:

“ 95 minutes of emotions so intense that you’re left breathless. I cry every time I watch it.” Pedro Almodovar 21

Life, Animated is an inspirational film that will provide parents and teachers with a great insight into working with children with autism.

“ A radiant, uplifting story.” Duane Byrge, The Hollywood Reporter

“ Deeply moving, a warm testament to a family’s love and resilience.” Justin Chang, Variety

CREATIVE CENTENARIES DIGITAL WORKSHOP HISTORICAL PODCASTING TUESDAY 24 and FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER

AVAILABLE TO BOOK FOR THURSDAY 24 AND FRIDAY 25 NOVEMBER

VENUE: SCHOOL BASED OUTREACH SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 3 AREAS OF LEARNING: THE ARTS / ENVIRONMENT & SOCIETY / HISTORY / ENGLISH / POLITICS / LLW / CITIZENSHIP / LITERACY / COMMUNICATION / UICT THEMES: HISTORY / HUMAN RIGHTS / WAR & PEACE DURATION: 2 HRS MAXIMUM PLACES AVAILABLE: 30 COST: £3pp From 1912 to 1922, Ireland was caught up in a period of tumultuous change as a number of defining events shaped the future of the island. In 1916, as Irish men fought for Britain during the First World War, many felt conflicted when news reached them of the Easter Rising in Dublin. Francis Ledwidge, an Irish nationalist, was one of those soldiers fighting overseas for Britain. He saw action at Gallipoli and in Serbia, eventually suffering injuries that brought him to Manchester from where he learned about the events of the Easter Rising and the fate of the leaders of the rebellion, some of whom he called close friends. Regarded as one of Ireland’s greatest poets, Ledwidge was stationed at Ebrington Barracks in Derry~Londonderry in late 1916, where we wrote a number of poems about the events of the Easter Rising, including ‘Lament for the Poets’. The Creative Centenaries project has produced a new graphic novel resource on the life of Francis Ledwidge, detailing his motivations to go to war and how the events of 1916 shaped his outlook. This workshop will see pupils work in small groups to create an interview podcast with Ledwidge during his time stationed at Ebrington in the aftermath of the Easter Rising. Students will assume the roles of people from the time and imagine how Ledwidge would have responded to the events of that year. All pupils participating in Creative Centenaries workshops will receive FREE graphic novels. 23

While the sonderkommando is to be liquidated at any moment, Saul rejects plans of rebellion to save the remains of a son he never took care of when he was still alive. “ It has sometimes been suggested that there’s little more to be said, in cinematic terms, about the unspeakable horrors of the Holocaust, that it has been churned over too often. Director: Mizuho Nishikubo. Cast: Tatsuya Nakadai, Yukie Nakama, Yûsuke Santamaria. Duration: 1hr.42mins. Cert: PG. Language: English, Japanese and English subtitles In the aftermath of the most devastating conflict mankind had ever experienced, the tiny island of Shikotan became part of the Sakhalin Oblast – and on the unhealed border in this remote corner of the world, friendship among children from two different countries timidly blossomed, striving to overcome language barriers and the waves of history. Inspired by true events.

“ In a manner relatively uncommon for animation, Giovanni's Island deals in historical events including occupations, deportations and concentration camps... It's a brave choice that works much as The Book Thief or The Diary of Anne Frank have done, offering young viewers a window of understanding into incomprehensible events.” Variety

THE FRENCH MINISTER (Quai d’Orsay)

SUITABLE FOR: KEY STAGE 4 (YR 12), SIXTH FORM AREAS OF LEARNING: INTERNATIONAL POLITICS / CITIZENSHIP / FRENCH LANGUAGE THEMES: INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS / DIPLOMACY / POWER / CORRUPTION France.2013. Director: Bertrand Tavernier. Cast: Thierry Lhermitte, Julie Gayet, Jane Birkin, Raphaël Personnaz, Niels Arestrup. Duration: 1hr.49mins. Cert: 15. Language: French with English subtitles Doors slam and papers fly in this off-the-wall comedy about French politics directed by master filmmaker Bertrand Tavernier (The Princess of Montpensier). Tavernier's blistering assault – based on the award-winning graphic novel by Abel Lanzac, a former government speech writer – concentrates on fictional Minister of Foreign Affairs Alexandre Taillard de Vorms (a tour-de-force comic performance by Thierry Lhermitte). A human whirlwind and a man confident in France's importance on the world stage, de Vorms takes on American neo-cons, corrupt Russians and the opportunistic Chinese, while his hapless speech writer (Raphael Personnaz) endures the eccentricities of his megalomaniacal boss and his sycophantic entourage. 26

In the vein of recent political comedies such as In the Loop, The French Minister is a hilarious send-up of diplomacy and international politics with rapid-fire dialogue and a brilliant ensemble cast.

“Tavernier pulls off a remarkable balancing act of not only fashioning comedy out of diplomatic politics, but giving us an insightful window into the quirks of that life.” Kenji Fujishima, Slant Magazine
