MACY No, I am fortunate that I have never experienced any form of discrimination.

TAMARA No, I have never experienced any discrimination.

MACY I have seen discrimination yes for example I know that there are a lot of racist people in the protest against the vaccine, but I think I live in an environment where there is not a lot of racism or discrimination

TAMARA LARA

No, I also actually have never see any racists acts in my country.

I've had the unfortunate experience to experience discrimination. I remember some memories where I was discriminated against because I was a woman. However, what is the most memorable is when I was on a Greek island and I told a guy I was Turkish, and he stopped talking to me and left.

7

LARA Yes, I have seen some racist or discriminatory acts in my country. I have seen some of my friends get random checks by police officers just because of their skin colors. I also have seen some of these acts during protests such as the BLM movement.

TAMARA I think we need to change the mentality of these people.

MACY I think the best way is to educate the children and the people around you and show them that discrimination and racism are very bad things. Also, show them how these people feel when they are discriminated.

LARA I think we should all learn from a young age not to discriminate. Everything starts when we're young, hate is something we learn, not something we're born with. We should also listen and learn from the people around us who might be experiencing these things.

8

MACY If I see any form of discrimination, I would try to stop it and say something to the person who is discriminating. I would try to make them understand that what they're doing is a bad thing.

LARA I'm trying to attend the different protests such as BLM or for the equality of women. I also try to educate myself by reading about these matters.

TAMARA I'm doing nothing personnaly.

First, what is discrimination? Most people think about homophobia, racism, or sexism when they think about discrimination. But discrimination is much more. These are the most terrible and strong forms of discrimination.

But there are also other forms. All people who don’t fit in the norms live with a sort of discrimination. Our body ideal, but also the norms society wants us to fit in are a form of discrimination. Young people get a wrong image of an ideal from social media. They want to have the same clothes and have the same body as their idols.

13

Everyone who doesn’t fit in risks being excluded. Exclusion is also discrimination. Often exclusion doesn’t even happen on purpose, but it’s happening. I think it is important that we don’t judge people for who they are. Everyone has the right to be respected and accepted just like he is. So Discrimination still finds its place all over the world. We try to get more open-minded nowadays, but will the discrimination ever disappear?

Prejudice is a burden that confuses the past, threatens the future, and renders the present inaccessible. - Maya Angelou

According to a Swedish study, France is one of the most racist countries in Europe. Indeed, 22.7% of the French do not want a neighbor of a different "race" than their own. Also, more than three quarters of French people support the fight against racism. The tolerance index, which has been rising steadily since 2013, has stabilized after reaching its highest point last year. Economic and social issues are the first concerns of the French, far ahead of questions of immigration, racism and religious fundamentalism, which are at their lowest. The encouraging results on state of opinion and prejudice should not obscure the fact that racism linked to origin claims many victims. Thousands of women, children and men are victims every day of discrimination in access to public services, education, housing, the world of work, even during identity checks and on social networks. The CNCDH is once again concerned this year about the persistence of prejudices and strong discrimination against some minorities and especially against the Roma. Another worrying fact is the increase in racist acts, to be put in perspective with the low number of disputes on racist grounds. For many years now, the CNCDH has called on the public authorities every year to remedy the causes of the underreporting of racist acts by victims. The prevention and deconstruction of prejudices in all sections of society must be privileged for a lasting fight against racism. While the CNCDH is very attached to a comprehensive approach to racism, it also wishes to underline the specific forms it can take depending on the minorities concerned. The focus on anti-black racism highlights prejudices that are still very active, often underestimated, and offers several recommendations to combat them.

17

The focus on hatred on the Internet returns to the law on online hatred, adopted definitively by the National Assembly on May 13, 2020, and on which the CNCDH issued a critical opinion. Although worried and aware that the dissemination of hateful messages is favored by the anonymity allowed in social networks, the CNCDH considers the law inadequate and disproportionate with the risk of unjustified censorship. Also, according to the president of the CNCDH “racism is undervalued in France, there is some but it is hidden”. There is a form of paradox with France that may be more tolerant than before, but racism and acts of racism that are increasingly violent and aggressive. The specialists practice the studies with an index of tolerance and, on this index, France does not place too badly. And in particular, since this year, it is a point that interested us on anti-visible black minority racism and blacks are the people with Jews, the best tolerated in France. However, blacks are the most discriminated against. This discrimination which we see publicly in stadiums, for example, sometimes in a terrible way, is present on social networks, in housing, in employment and in education. This discrimination is completely contradictory with the tolerance which the black minority is nevertheless the object of. In conclusion, we can say that France is not very racist, but unfortunately there are still racists.

How to fight discrimination or racist acts around you Listen and educate yourself It is important for one to learn to fight this, to educate themselves. If you have never experienced discrimination or racist acts against you, then it is significant that you listen to those who have. There are many ways to do this. You can ask the people around, which will help you gain a lot of insight. There are also many articles or movies related to these experiences that you can watch. Here are some examples of some movies: "Selma" and "Just Mercy"

Voice your experience/ raise awarness If you have experienced racism or discriminatory acts, you should try to voice it. This will help raise awareness. On the other hand, if you have not experienced it, then you should help those who are trying to tell their stories. To do this, one of the best ways is through social media. However, you can also raise awareness at home, give a good example to your siblings for instance.

Stand up and act It is very important to be socially active. Attend the different protests that are being held in your country. Correct the people around you if you see them making racists/ discriminatory comments. Report these acts to the police.

Don't forget! Discrimination comes in many forms. It can be agaisnt a race, gender, religion. Keep your eyes open and edcate yourself and your surroundings.
