VOLUNTEERS Hello! I am Annalisa, I come from the wonderful city of Bologna (Northern Italy). I have an academic background in International Relations (European Affairs) and look forward to become a project developer in international cooperation, tackling social issues through the participation of civil society. I am spending a year in Kalamata, volunteering at the K.A.NE’s office, helping out with the design and management of youth mobility and social projects.

ANNAL I S A

CLARA Hey, my name is Clara, I'm 18 and I'm from France, more specifically Lille. I wanted to go abroad to learn English, get out of school before resuming my studies and discovering new cultures. I am now a new volunteer at the Kalamata dog center for a period of 6 months.

EMM A Hi, I’m Emma, I come from France and I’m nineteen years old. I’m in Greece for six month as volunteer to discover lot of things, as much as possible, to improve my English and why not to learn Greek. So I work in a horse therapic center.

K A S S A N D RA Hello! I am Kassandra and I come from Germany. I am eighteen years old and I’ve just finished school, so now I have time to experience something new and to travel. This is why I take part in the ESC in Kalamata for one year and I am pretty excited about it. I work in the Dog Rescue Center, because I love dogs and I want to support them.

MAR I A Hey! I’m Maria and I come from Lisbon, Portugal. I just finished my bachelor in Communication Design and after doing an erasmus semester in Athens, I knew I had to come back to Greece. So, I ended up here in Kalamata where I’m going to work with video. I also have a big interest in performance art and cinema and in my work I always mix these different backgrounds and interests. I’m only going to stay for two months, but I’m really excited to get to know the Peloponnese and to enjoy this beautiful city by the sea.

MAGDALEN A Hi, my name is Magda, I come from Poland and will stay here in Kalamata until the end of January. I have a degree in Civil Engineering, but I didn’t like working in my profession, so now I’m switching to graphic design. And that’s what I will do here as a volunteer - help with all the design issues and create a consistent visual identification of K.A.NE. My idea of a time well spent is hiking, road tripping and checking out every cafetería in town.

TA M A R A Hi ! My name is Tamara Termignon, I come from the south of France, I have a Professional Baccalaureate in Management Administration, and following that I was hired as a maintenance agent. Before going on a permanent contract I wanted to discover other things, that's why I'm here today. I am coming to Greece for 1 month and I am volunteering in the dog shelter. Animals are my passion, as are Korea and music.

TANIA Yuhu! My name is Tania. I come from a town in the northeast of Spain. I studied psychology, although now I don’t have in mind to dedicate myself to it. Honestly, now what I want is to know new places and live new adventures. My life plan is to live in as many different countries as I can. I will stay in Kalamata for a year and I’m volunteer in The Dog Shelter. I love the nature, sea, music, photography and enjoying the life.

VAL E N T I N Bonjour (hello in English). My name is Valentin and I am a student in France. I'm 21. I decided to go to Greece for several reasons, the first one being that I love this country, I regularly come to Greece during my holidays. I am also here for my studies, having some English gaps I come to perfect my English. Finally I hope to meet many people during my 4 months in Kalamata.

VIKTO R Čau, I am Viktor, a 20 years old dude from Czech Republic. I’ll stay here until August 2021 so I will be here for a one whole year. Actually I have just moved from my parents house and this is for the first time when I am living on my own. Most of my time I watch some TV shows or read good books. Looking forward to writing many amazing articles for you.

VIRA Доброго дня любі друзі! My name is Vira, I am 25 years old. Last year I gradua-

ted with a Master's degree of Marketing and International Communication from the University of Economics in Katowice. I always believed that if a person really wants to achieve something, there are no boundaries to get it. I think so, because 3 years ago, before I came to Poland, I had a surgery on the spine that changed my life. Volunteering is close to me because I believe that only by supporting each other, teaching, talking - we can succeed, improve our lives on this planet. 5

COLLABORATORS FI L A R E T OS Hello, I am Filaretos Vourkos. For the last 15 years I am working in the field of Non-formal education as a volunteer, youth worker and youth trainer. 10 years ago, I decided to create the Youth Centre of Kalamata, in order to initiate youth work in Kalamata and promote active citizenship as factor for change.

JELEN A Hi, I’m Jelena Scepanovic, an EVS coordinator in K.A.NE. and a volunteer of the Youth center. I came from Montenegro in 2012 as an EVS volunteer. I really liked the idea of the youth center and the work that K.A.NE. does, so I decided to stay and be part of it.

“a problem with being old is that they think that we still have to learn things when, in fact, we are unlearning them, and it makes perfect sense that it is so that we sink unconsciously into the imminence of disappearance, unconsciousness erases the pains, of course, and extinguishes the joys, but there are not many joys anymore and in the result of the account it is well seen that the heads of the old are destitute of the reason that, so facing death, we do not panic (…)”

I f y o u c o u l d pi ck a de a d pe r s o n t o ta l k to , w h o w o u l d i t be ? ANNALISA I have a long list of historical figures I’d really like to have a talk with, but if I had to pick just one, maybe it would be my great grandmother Ermelinda (also a historical figure, in her own way).

MARIA

CLARA

EMMA

My granddad. He died some weeks before my birth so I never met him. But my mom always says that in some ways I’m very similar to him and he was the only person in my family that had an “artistic vein”.

I think it would be my dutch aunt because she left too early.

TAMARA

I will choose my grandmother because she died before I was born and I would have like to know her.

KASSANDRA

Louis de funes is an actor that I would have liked to know, I think his movies were great.

My grandmother because she was very similar to me with same goals, so I really want to show her my life now, to know what she would think about it and if she were proud about me.

TANIA I would like to speak with some ancestor of mine from the 5th century to ask him who he was, what his life was like, where he lived and many other things to know more about my roots. VALENTIN If I could talk to a deceased person, I would talk to my grandmother for sure because she disappeared when I was young. VIKTOR

MAGDALENA

I would like to talk to the one and only Alexander the Great. It would be such an experience and also at the end of our conversation I would ask him about the location of his grave.

David Bowie, the music icon who inspired generations and left way too soon - in January 2016, at the age of 69. I remember finding it out at work and being devastated, especially that he had just released a new album (Blackstar) and in my radio we’d prepared the whole “artist of the week” section about him, hoping for his upcoming gigs and not knowing he was struggling with cancer.

VIRA If I had the opportunity to communicate, it would be me - but ten / fifteen years ago. I would like to say to myself: well done and I'm doing everything right - but I have to believe in myself more. 10

MARIA

Ignorance.

W h a t a re you most a fr a i d o f?

MAGDALENA I’m afraid of the consequences of uncontrolled capitalism. Ah, and of overpopulation.

ANNALISA I think nothing scares me more than having to rely on someone else for everything, not being able to make my own decisions. CLARA To miss opportunities that could make me evolve. TAMARA

EMMA

I'm not afraid of death, and I don't care how it's going to turn out, I'm just afraid of fire, sharks and fireworks.

I'm afraid time will pass too quickly.

TANIA I’m quite impulsive, and then when I make a decision I’m afraid of not having chosen the right one. VALENTIN I’m afraid that I don’t have enough time to do all the things I have to do.

KASSANDRA ITo miss chances and not to live my life in the best way I could.

VIKTOR

I'm afraid I'll be hit by a car in Greece. VIRA I'm afraid that when I'm will have 80 year, I'll regret not doing something I dreamed of (not going to a meeting that could change my life, not saying "I love you ..." to the person I once loved). 11

W h a t do y o u th i n k a bo u t de a th ? ANNALISA I think it’s an enormous topic for humans, I’ve never heard of a culture that hasn’t built a system of beliefs around it. From personal experience, I think that death is more about the people who have to live on and experience real loss than about those who die.

MAGDALENA What should I think about it? It’s a part of life cycle but people managed to create thousands of ways to make life end unnaturally. TAMARA I think that’s a natural thing, it always was and always will be. TANIA

CLARA

I would love for reincarnation to exist and to be reincarnated into a bird or a fish, but unfortunately I think we die and that's it.

I don't think much of death just that it's part of the cycle of life and it's fate. EMMA

VALENTIN

It’s sad but it’s inevitable, I think you better not think about it and live your life to the fullest.

I think that after death, the person will continue a better life wherever they are.

KASSANDRA

VIKTOR

It‘s sad that we have to die, but we are just made by molecules in the end. However, I still hope to meet Peter Pan.

Death is the permanent cessation of all biological functions that sustains a living organism. This is not my thought, this is a definition from Wikipedia because I do not know how to answer this question.

MARIA It’s everything and nothing. It gives life meaning, but takes significance from existence.

VIRA Unfortunately the concept of death is very broad. For me personally - death can happen during your lifetime. Death - is not a desire to live. Death - is absence of motivation. Death - this is degradation. Death - this is putting life off for later (procrastination). Death - is an integral part of life (as there is day and there is night). 12

FEAR AND DEATH 16

Author: VIRA

DEFINITION OF FEAR

program by nature itself and by God, so that man does not die before HIS TIME. The house of fear is us and our head. So let's knock to our neighbor's door - and say "HELLO I CAME TO YOU IN PEACE". We must accept fear in our lives as something normal. It is normal to be afraid. But there is one BUT.

We live in a wonderful time. We can read and find all the information about fears, death, eternal life, reincarnation and so on on Wikipedia and the Internet. But as 1000 years ago and still now - the main factor in human development and evolution is FEAR and FEAR OF DEATH.

WE HAVE TWO CHOICES Why? You ask. It is because if a mammoth attacked a person, or a tiger wanted to eat an ancient human being- fear forced them to get fire, build a house, learn to hunt, develop your physical shape and learn to cook (in order to not to die of starvation). Fear forced people to unite - to create villages, cities, countries. It is because of fear, we know that once upon a time Sparta, Byzantium, Kievan Rus etc. existed. By the way, the majestic history of Kievan Rus developed due to the fact that people were afraid of enemy attacks. They expanded their territory, constructed buildings and wrote books. They wanted to be better than their enemies, whom they feared. History gives us a lot of such examples.

1. We can lock ourselves in the room. Cover ourselves with a blanket - and be afraid of living, going outside and communicating with people. We can stop working and just "spit" at the ceiling. 2. We can understand that fear is something good. We can find the reason for fear, think about why we have it. Adopt a strategy what can I do to get rid of fear. When we meet our FEAR, we can take action. First of all go outside. Smile at the sun. And by small steps of a 5 year-old child, we can train our immunity depending on which fear we have.

“

WHERE FEAR LIVES Fear lives only in our head. Genetically it is passed down to us from our ancestors. It is just a fantasy of our brain. The brain generates fear solely based on negative human experience, on information received from the Authorities (mom, dad, grandpa, grandma, teacher, television). Also, fear is a genetically prescribed

What do we get after making the choice - ooo believe me, the universe has prepared an incredible life for us, full of happy people, REALIZATION OF PLANS and what is the most important - love and peace. Here the main thing is to make a CHOICE. DEATH What do we know about death? Who is this woman with a braid in a black dress? What is this terrible event in life? What are dead people? Zombies? Vampires? Werewolves? Maybe! In the 21st century, people have learned to drive a car, watch TV and use the Internet. We get all the information about the world around us from movies and TV series. But if you include critical thinking - the scripts of all the films are written by people to whom it is very important to sell their film/series. And how to do it – is to write a scene where the protagonist dies - and it's a terrible tragedy. Of course, it is very scary, but this negative aspect makes us remember this emotion of DEATH and to carry it in our head throughout life.

ple in India and China, the color of death is WHITE. Hindus believe that the soul is eternal and Death does not exist. THEY BELIEVE THAT REINCARNATION EXISTS - the birth of a soul in a new body. There are many of such examples. The main thing is that we all have the right to believe it or not. To be afraid or not to be afraid. For some, death is the beginning of life in another reality. For some, death is the end. I have no answer to this question - only theories and analysis of the thoughts of PHILOSOPHERS, MYSTICS, SCIENTISTS who wrote books on the concepts of death and life. THE END IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF THE NEW The main thing in our life is not death but LIFE. It is important what we did. Who we were. Have we changed the world? Did we plant a tree? Did we love? Did we travel? Did we say I LOVE YOU‌. . Were we good parents/friends/children? Did we make our dreams come true? Did we dream? Have we helped others? Did we believe in people? Did we think positively? Did we throw garbage in the dump?

IT IS IMPORTANT TO LIVE HERE AND NOW BECAUSE DEATH IS JUST A STEP ON A PATH WHICH WE DO NOT KNOW

DIFFERENCES: GREECE AND FRANCE

Each country has its own culture. However, what makes sense in some countries doesn‘t make sense in other. The geographical location, religion or history of countries play an important role in the habits of people.

FRENCH LANGUAGE vs GREEK LANGUAGE

Although cultural diversity can be noted in the kitchen, it is also possible to notice differences in everyday life.

These 2 languages are very complex to learn because they are filled with subtlety and expression. They are both languages that are as different as they are similar, just by looking at their alphabets, you can see that some letters are alike and other are very different.

GREET EACH OTHER IN FRANCE AND GREECE The French people are known for their ways of kissing each other to greet each other, this gesture may seem trivial, but it responds to a very precise code. We don't kiss everyone, or in every situation. Depending on the region, we do 2, 3 or 4, starting with the right cheek or the left cheek. In Greece, trying to kiss someone (even on the cheek) can be frowned upon, as can giving a handshake. For this greeting, the Greeks use the word kalimera. This word is the exact translation of good morning. 23

HALLOWEEN IN FRANCE AND GREECE For Halloween, French children go from house to house to collect candy or simply party at home. Some French people love to dress up as zombies, vampires or other creepy creatures, while others watch horror movies with their friends or family.

In Greece, it's completely different, Halloween may be an important holiday and it is celebrated in Europe for more than 20 years, Greece is not one of its followers, apart from a few organized parties in bars and clubs. First, I will present the project to you: The therapeutic horse riding center is a rehabilitative organization giving children with physical and mental disabilities therapies through horses and horse riding.

I work with Siim, another volunteer, and the owners Amalia and Panayotis and I spend very rewarding moments with them.

My tasks consist of preparing, training and taking care of the horses before and after the sessions with children. During the sessions, my role is to assist the therapists, for example by holding the horse or by playing therapy games with the children.

Moreover, I have already had the opportunity to work with disabled people so I really liked the project. I also went horseback riding throughout my childhood and the idea of having a different approach to riding appealed to me.

INTERVIEW In this LINK we interview our new colleague - Maria, the volunteer from Portugal.

1

When you compare Portuguese and Greek mentality can you see any differences? Maria: From my experience, for Greeks it's normal to arrive more than one hour late to an appointment, while for Portuguese 15/20 minutes is the maximum acceptable. Greek people are not really trying to reach an ecological/sustainable way of living, since they are still ok with leaving trash on the floor or not really doing recycling. While most Portuguese people are more and more aware of ecological policies and try to do the best they can in this subject. 32

What do you like about Greece and Kalamata the most?

Greece, because I did an erasmus semester in Athens last year. And after spending quarantine and summer in Portugal I really needed to go out. In Kalamata, I just want to be able to do a personal project and develop something with the community.

Maria: The weather, the amazing landscapes where the mountains meet the sea. The hospitality, the really great food and greek chill way of living.

Have you ever volunteered abroad?

Maria: No, only in Portugal and I’ve participated in some youth exchanges abroad.

ART REVIEW

COCO - THE FILM

Author: ANNALISA

For this “dark” issue, I’d like to present

Coco, a 3D computer-animated fantasy film about a Mexican boy, Miguel, who - in order to pursue his dream of becoming a musician - goes all the ...and pays a visit to his idol Ernesto de la Cruz, who used to be a great ultra popular musician of humble origins, enchanting folks live and on tv with his voice and guitar, eventually dying in a tragic stage accident in 1942. First of all, why “Coco”? Well, Coco is Miguel’s great-grandmother, an incredibly sweet lady, daughter to Mamá Imelda, the long-deceased founder of the family shoe-making business, highly respected for her strength of character and resilience, which allowed her to make an opportunity out of a crisis and raise a little girl all by herself after being abandoned by her husband. Due to her age, Coco suffers from some sort of degenerative brain condition, which makes her confuse past and present, so we mostly see her reliving her happy childhood. As I was mentioning, Coco opens with a sad family history, in which Miguel’s great-grandfather - also a great musician abandoned his wife and little girl, starting a new era of shoe-making and music banishing for the whole family. In the first sequence, a big family tree is set up on an altar (of course, the traitor ancestor cut from all family pictures), celebrating with ofrendas the Día de los Muertos - the Day of 36

way to the Land of

the Dead...

the Dead

- Mamá Imelda on top of the tree. The whole family is busy with the preparations for one of the most important festivities of the year, and Miguel is frustrated and saddened by the ban on music, preventing him from expressing his one true passion, and forcing him to set up his own personal little altar in honour of the great Ernesto de la Cruz. He wants to participate in the annual town’s talent contest, but his grandmother catches him playing a guitar and angrily reminds him of the tragedy brought by music into their family, trying to convince him to leave music and be a part of the family’s celebrations. His answer is blunt: he doesn’t care about the ofrendas, he wants to play music. A long series of events unfolds:

the grand-

mother breaks his guitar, he tries to find another one and eventually goes to De la Cruz’s grave in the cemetery, takes the guitar from the altar, tries to play it and by doing so crosses

over the Land of the Dead, where he meets

his ancestors, new friends and the one and only Ernesto de la Cruz, living one adventure after the other while trying to go back home. He learns a lot about his family history, unexpectedly intertwined with Ernesto de la Cruz’s,

I’m not going to spoiler too much about this movie, but there are some very interesting elements I’d like to point out. Personally, I think the real protagonist of this movie is Mexico: its landscapes, traditions, colours and flavours. I haven’t spent a lot of time in Mexico - just a couple of days - but I do have a few friends who are from different parts of the country and I remember reading - as a teenager - a book that left me a very strong impression (Como agua para chocolate). 37

From all the stories I’ve been told about this huge and magical country, I think the makers of Coco have done a very good job recreating its atmospheres and telling the world about its customs and cultural beliefs. The architectural

patterns I recognised while watching this movie.

Why “Coco” for a Link issue on death and fears? Well, for me this is a movie that talks about death by portraying it as part of a cycle where different elements are inextricably intertwined. The most relevant of them, I think, is memory. Especially in these difficult and extraordinary COVID 2019 times, I find it very important to represent death as something that concerns who leaves us as much as us - those who are left to live on. In the Land of the Dead, only those who are remembered by someone who is still alive can stay, while others slowly disappear. I find this concept very interesting: the point is not that someone dies and someone lives, it’s their connection, the fact that they remember each other, and they support each other through memory. Throughout the movie, we can see Miguel becoming more and more aware of what “the Land of the Living” looks like from the perspective of those who have pas-

I love that, in Coco, the Land of the Dead combines regular bureaucratic elements with fantastic creatures (maybe it reminds me of the Harry Potter universe), I love the aesthetics of it - the colours, the urban landscapes, the little decorative details and make up on the dead’s faces, I love that female characters have as much spa38

PLACE TO TRAVEL

ZAKYNTHOS - Navagio Beach and the Blue Caves

This June I and four other volunteers decided to take a five day trip to one of the Ionian islands, Zakynthos. We saw amazing places there, but we saved the most famous for the last day. Navagio Beach, which means shipwreck beach, is considered one of the most beautiful in the world and one of the main attractions of Greece, this is why it is visited by thousands of tourists every year.

A lonely cove, vertigo cliffs, crystal clear waters, white sand and a ship stranded in it. The view couldn't be more perfect. The skeleton of the ship that overlooks the bay, has remained there, lonely and rickety, for more than 30 years after a storm. It is the Panagiotis, which, it seems, was used by the Italian mafia to transport whiskey and smuggled tobacco from Turkey. Nobody has thought, not even remotely, to remove the ship, because it has become one of the incentives to visit this place.

Being able to visit this place without practically people is surely an experience that we will not be able to repeat. It really was amazing, incredibly beautiful. What impressed me the most was the color of the water. I've never seen a color like this. It was an electric turquoise color. It seemed that someone had put coloring in it. Due to the bad state of the sea, Andreas could not embark on the sand so we had to jump off the boat and then swim against the waves to shore. For me it was an incredible experience to bathe in that turquoise water between the cliffs that surround the beach and the ivory white sand. We visit the Panagiotis closely and explore the corners of the beach. To get back to the ship, we had to go one by one. It was a bit difficult because the waves were heading towards the beach.

Instead of looking for a tour on a boat that would transport a lot of people, we found a good deal with a small boat just for us. We met our captain, Andreas, in a restaurant in the middle of the road. There, he told us to follow him with the car to Puerto Vromi. The road was full of curves and Andreas was going very fast. When we got there, we got on the boat and started the adventure. That day, it was quite windy and the sea was agitated. So we voted against the sea with great intensity. The place was incredibly beautiful, full of high cliffs. We finally reached our destination, the beach. Normally this beach is crowded with tourists but due to COVID-19 we were practically alone, since at that time the borders of Greece were still closed for foreign tourists. There were only two more boats and no one on the beach.

Then, we went to visit the Blue Caves. These arched caves, where the turquoise blue sea water runs through, are located on the cliffs that surround the beach. They can be explored in a small boat but we were unable to enter some due to the waves. After this, we went to the port. There, we took the car and went to a viewpoint where you can see a perfect view of the beach and take the typical postcard photo. Finally, we finished our adventure. It really seems like a recommendable experience to me.

PAST EVENT HIKING AND CLEANING IN KATO - ANO KARVELI

Πεζοπορία και καθαρισμός στο Κάτω - Άνω Καρβέλι / Hiking and cleaning in Kato - Ano Karveli When: Sunday, 18th October 2020 Where: Departure near Messiniakos stadium in Kalamata Organizers: ΕΟΣ Καλαμάτας - EOS Kalamatas Price: 5€ per person Link: https://eoskal.gr/syllogos/anakoinoseis/item/1141-pezoporia-kai-katharismos-sto-katoanokarveli-kyriaki-18-oktovriou

On October 18th, a walk was organised by the EOS association of Kalamata (ΕΟΣ Καλαμάτας), to cover the most beautiful hiking trails in the villages of Taygetos and Kalamata, on the path linking the villages of Kato (Κάτω) and Ano Karveli (Άνω Καρβέλι). It is a historical path that plays a central role in the ancient network of paths of Messinia and Taygetos and was probably once part of the axis that linked Kalamata to Sparta. During this hike, the path was cleaned by collecting the rubbish found on the path, as well as cutting branches and pulling up plants that had grown on the path, making it impassable. During the 6 hour walk we were able to admire magnificent panoramas, as at the start with the view of the town of Kalamata and its beaches or with the arrival at the village of Ano Karveli with its mountainous landscapes. The route ended with the meal with all the hikers on a small square in Ano Karveli with local products such as wine or seasonal fruits, a musical atmosphere accompanied by traditional dances before returning to Kalamata.
