a shopaholic’s dream
Never has shopping been a more intensely cultural experience than it is in Chennai. The city’s hotspots introduce the connoisseur to a world of art, collectibles and vintage handicrafts that define the vibrant spirit of South India. Text: Kamala Thiagarajan nourish a hazelnut cappuccino while relaxing on white wicker chairs along the sweeping veranda of Wild Flower Cafe, a coffee shop enveloped in lush greenery in the heart of the city. I have just explored the rather lovely vintage store next door, the Amethyst boutique. My purchase – a dazzling old-fashioned jewellery box – dotted with lush glittering butterflies and equipped with a silver and gold lock, will make an ideal gift for my sister. The store is housed in a stately
150-year-old colonial style building, painted sunset yellow and filled to the rafters with handloom, handicraft and heritage items. You’ll find the finest hand-spun kadhi here (the material that Mahatma Gandhi popularised and urged all Indians to wear more often) as well as end-of-the-season sales on designer clothing, vibrant Indian print textiles and bedsheets, unique scarves in rainbow shades, handcrafted concept jewellery from top designers (pendants etched with Hindu gods and goddesses, tribal style
merchandise and plenty of other jewelled trinkets). Amethyst is truly an avant-garde lifestyle boutique with an eclectic mix of art, housing accessories and handicrafts. Stop off at Blooms, the popular flower store on the premises and feast your eyes on the exotic foliage. Your significant other is sure to appreciate their creative bouquets brimming over with red roses, dahlias and anthuriams. There’s something undeniably charming about a shop that’s housed in a heritage home. Shreya’s (in
Purasawakam), tucked away in a sprawling stone mansion with impressive pillared columns, honey coloured walls and rust brown tiles will transport you back to an era in which elegance took centre-stage. It’s an art and bargainlover’s paradise and the merchandise is tasteful and carefully hand-picked from across the country. I can lose myself for hours, happily browsing amidst their collection of silk and cotton sarees, elegant salwar-kameez and stylish kurtis. Their linen section is particularly wellequipped, with luxurious bedsheets, quilts and designer cushions in jewelled and pastel tones. But it’s the knick-knacks that capture my interest. I love the Rajasthani wooden toys, the ornate clocks, the tiny
wooden chest-of-drawers, the cane napkin holders, trendy wallets, silk purses and the rather unique hand-crafted bamboo bags. You’re certain to find a souvenir here that has lasting emotional appeal, ideal for loved ones back home. A visit to Vummidi Bangaru Jewellers, a premium jewellery store should be enough to reveal why this country loves its gold. Their range of temple and bridal jewellery is certain to make an impact. You’ll find the more traditional designs similar to to the ornaments donned by stone deities in Hindu temples. If it’s a gift you seek, there’s an impressive range of silverware to celebrate every occasion, from childbirth to marriage.

If you’d like your shopping to serve a lofty purpose, then you’ll find a thread of compassion behind the merchandise stocked at Manjal, a Chennai store run by the M. Rm. Rm Cultural Foundation, a non-profit organisation that documents and supports the revival of rural craft, textiles and architecture of the Chettinad area (which is a day’s trip from Chennai). Manjal works with village women, helping them sustain a livelihood while reviving age-old crafts that are rapidly disappearing. Here, you’ll find the famed kottan (handmade palmyra containers with intricate weaves), colourful plastic baskets, kandanghi sarees (checked sarees with wide borders that are unique to this region) and the famed athangudi JUNE/JULY 2014

The baskets made by the craftswomen of the Foundation have won them the UNESCO Seal of Excellence for handcrafted products several times and the kottan basket has been recently awarded a GI (Geographical Indications Registry) by the Government of India. For beautifully crafted, ecofriendly items with utilitarian appeal, the Auroville showrooms situated in Nungambakkam and Beasant Nagar in Chennai are truly a treat for the senses. Full of colour and fragrance, the store specialises in all things handmade and
natural. You’ll love the ceramic diffusers, the delicate pottery, incense sticks, colourful candles decorated with all kinds of dried leaves, brass Buddhas, gorgeous paper bags in a rainbow medley of colour and the tie-and-die bed sheets. Their range of hand-made soaps are truly unique. Crafted from certified pure and organic coconut, neem, almond and castor oils, these are 100 percent vegetarian, laced with herbal and fine essences which add natural scent and ensure a chemicalfree bath. Indika Antique in Nehru Nagar offers vintage furniture and lovingly restores your own family heirlooms,
even providing these pieces with a contemporary twist. Shanta Narayan started the business in 1999, when her own home needed refurbishing. When she wasn’t happy with what was commercially available, Shanta hired her own team of gifted carpenters and began working on a range of furniture that had durable as well as modern appeal. She found that she had the knack of transforming old clunky furniture into something stylish, while still retaining its classic timelessness. One of the first pieces she worked on is an antique wooden tailor’s table that she transformed into a mini-bar. “I retained
the dimensions,” she says, “I converted the draws into cubby holes, made space for a central 36-inch wine storage area and crafted side-boards from the paddy chairs.” She works with rosewood and teak but is particular about sourcing environmental-friendly recycled wood. “The grains are richer as the wood has already been treated,” she says. In her showroom, you’ll find interesting items – like double-decker cupboards, chaise-lounges and even the planter chair that was popular in colonial India. Fortunately, international shipping is available and Indika has clients from around the world.
