Along with being the Regional History Curator for the WMU Archives and Regional History Collections, Lynn taught Michigan history for Western’s Department of History from 2002 to 2017.
Red Terror in Kalamazoo: An Incident in the Shakespeare Strike of 1948

Learn how the postwar Red Scare and a raid by some Detroit union members on the company offices helped turn a simple strike for higher wages into a congressional investigation.

Have you ever wanted to know what happens behind the scenes at the library? Do you want to meet other teens and have fun? Do you like to share your opinion or make the world a better place? Do you want relevant experience for future job resumes and college applications? We are looking for teens in grades 9–12, ages 14 and older, to join our Teen Task Force and we’d love to have you check us out! Submit a short application at kpl.gov/teens/task-force Volunteer opportunities will be set up as tasks in our online calendar monthly. Once your application is accepted and you’ve attended a short orientation, you can join in as many tasks as you’d like, depending on your interest and availability. Coming up this Spring we will be crafting a “Poet-Tree” for the Oshtemo and Central children’s rooms, prepping crafts for children’s programs, and many more projects. From helping to develop program ideas to decorating the teen space for a party, we’ll have a tasks for a variety of interests and skill levels. Director’s Note Kalamazoo Public Library continually seeks ways to enhance patron experiences, provide better services, and introduce new technology to our lineup of offerings. I am pleased to share a few recent additions: By way of a generous donation, Central Library updated its adaptive technology in the second floor public computer area, providing software that improves accessibility for patrons with vision loss. New screen-reader technology has been installed on multiple computers to assists patrons by providing speech and Braille output for internet, email and desktop applications usage. The HUB Digital Lab on the 3rd floor at Central is a popular destination for patrons seeking to digitize media including photographs, slides, negatives, LPs and cassettes. The Lab also has digital editing software for the creative start-to-finish production of video and audio content. In addition, expert and attentive staff can assist those needing to use any of the HUB’s lineup of impressive technology, including KPL’s newest high-end 3D printer. Bring in your idea for a 3D printing project and make it a reality with this latest high-tech and amazing addition to the HUB. As a convenience for our patrons, KPL recently implemented a courtesy one-time renewal feature where, upon an item’s due date, we will automatically renew materials for an extended period (1 week for DVDs, 3 weeks for books). If you are signed up for email or text notifications, a helpful notice will be sent to you two days prior to due dates, indicating the upcoming auto renewal. Items not renewed automatically include Hot Picks, items on hold for other patrons, and materials that have already been auto-renewed once. I would be remiss not to mention two programs of note: this year’s Reading Together selection Evicted: Poverty and Profit in the American City by Matthew Desmond — and the exceptional programming planned around it — makes it a must-read. Plan to pick up a copy at any branch and then also consider attending any one of the many book discussions and impactful programs at branches and offsite locations during March. Meet the author Friday, March 16, 7 p.m. at Chenery Auditorium. Also, this year marks the 15th Annual Teen Filmmaker Fest, a fun tradition that draws the best of the best of young talent from across Michigan. This year’s top films will be highlighted on Saturday, March 17 at the Judy K. Jolliffe Theatre in downtown’s Epic Center. Be sure to visit these events and your local library! We Have Tax Forms During tax season, all KPL locations will distribute paper copies of basic federal forms and instructions, and MI tax forms and instruction booklets (free of charge, while they last). We now have federal (IRS) 1040EZ forms, 1040 forms and instructions, MI Home Heating Credit Claim forms/ instructions and MI-1040 forms/instruction booklets (including Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim and other forms).
