La Isla del Encanto Borinquen, atlántica y caribeña, isla de particular encanto que combina un pasado colonial con vestigios españoles, sumándole la modernidad y tecnología de los nuevos tiempos, inserta en el mundo del norte sin perder su contacto natural con el sur de nuestra América. Puerto Rico, como hoy se la conoce, no oculta su pasado indígena, por el contrario, sus habitantes, conocidos como "boricuas", exaltan sus raíces nativas, su cultura ancestral entrelazada con la española y su condición actual, de estado libre asociado a los Estados Unidos de América. Esta situación tan particular permite a Puerto Rico extraer lo mejor de dos mundos, combinar historia y tecnología, agregarle un condimento caribeño bañado de mar, sol y rumba, con un toque particular de la calidez y bohonomia de sus habitantes que con razón llaman a este territorio la "Isla del Encanto". Quizás cuando Juan Ponce de León colonizó la isla en 1508 y fue nombrado su primer gobernador por la Corona Española, desplazando a los pacíficos y hospitalarios indios taínos, que a pesar de su posterior resistencia sucumbieron a los conquistadores, ni unos ni otros hubieran imaginado la evolución y prosperidad que alcanzaría esta tierra. Con playas de aguas cristalinas y paisajes tropicales, sus principales ciudades son cosmopolitas, con espléndida cocina internacional y emocionante vida nocturna. Las imponentes fortificaciones españolas, como el Fuerte del Morro en San Juan, alternan con modernos edificios, plazas y parques, además del magnífico puerto que recibe los más importantes cruceros del mundo. Las principales ciudades de la isla, como ser San Juan, Mayagüez, Ponce o Fajardo, entre otras, están unidas por modernas autopistas con indicadores que facilitan el tránsito de turistas. Puerto Rico tiene una de las economías más dinámicas y diversas de América Latina. A mediados del Siglo XX, la economía puertorriqueña estaba dominada por la agricultura, especialmente el cultivo de la caña de azúcar. Sin embargo, una gran inversión en la infraestructura y extensos programas de incentivos han logrado transformar considerablemente la economía. Desde los 60, se han establecido en la Isla numerosas empresas multinacionales de las industrias farmacéutica, electrónica, textil, petroquímica, y más recientemente biotecnológica. The Island of Enchantment Both Atlantic and Caribbean, Borinquen is a particularly charming island that combines a colonial past with Spanish reminiscence and today's modernity and technology. Although located in the midst of the northern world, it still preserves its natural contact with the south of our America. Puerto Rico, as it is known today, makes no attempt to hide its indigenous past; quite the opposite - its people, known as "boricuas", extol their native roots - their ancestral culture intermingled with the Spanish culture - and today's condition, as a free commonwealth state of the United States of America. Such a peculiar status provides Puerto Rico the best of both worlds, combining history and technology, adding a Caribbean seasoning to the charm of the ocean, sun and rumba, with the unique touch of warmth and outgoingness of its people, who righteously call this territory the "Island of Enchantment". Juan Ponce de LeĂłn colonized the island in 1508 and was appointed as its first governor by the Spanish Crown, displacing the peaceful and hospitable TaĂno Indians. The latter resisted the Spaniards subsequently, and were defeated by the Old World's conquerors. It is very likely that neither party at the time would have imagined the progress and prosperity that Puerto Rico would attain with time. Blessed with crystalline water beaches and tropical landscapes, its main cosmopolitan cities offer a splendid international cuisine and an enticing night life. Impressive Spanish fortifications, such as San Juan's Fuerte del Morro, alternate with modern buildings, squares and parks, and a magnificent port that welcomes the world's most renowned cruise ships. The island's main cities, such as San Juan, MayagĂźez, Ponce or Fajardo, among others, are connected through modern highways signaled with placards meant to make tourists' transit easy. Puerto Rico has one of the most dynamic and diverse economies in Latin America. In the mid twentieth century, Puerto Rican economy was dominated by farming, being sugar cane its main crop. However, significant investments on infrastructure and broad incentives programs have succeeded in transforming their economy considerably. A vast array of multinational pharmaceutical, electronics, textile and petrochemical corporations settled in the island as early as in the 60's, and were more recently joined by the biotechnology industry. At present, manufacturing and service industries (including tourism) have replaced agriculture as the island's main source of revenues. Livestock and dairy products have replaced the sugar industry as the main commodity.

In that regard, the various tourism promotion entities have developed interesting campaigns to spread the word about Puerto Rico's virtues, and have favored that industry with policies that encourage investment across many areas, supported by the state's active role in the construction and refurbishment of its infrastructure.
En este sentido, las diferentes entidades de promoción turística han desarrollado interesantes campañas para dar a conocer al mundo las bondades de Puerto Rico, además de favorecer al sector con políticas proclives a la inversión en las distintas áreas, así como la participación estatal en la construcción y reacondicionamiento de su infraestructura.
In the meetings and incentives tourism segment we must highlight the job done by the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau; created almost 50 years ago, the Bureau conducts a decisive professional work to promote the island as a destination for such events.
En el segmento vinculado al turismo de reuniones e incentivos, se debe destacar la labor del Buró de Convenciones de Puerto Rico, el que ya cercano a los 50 años de vida realiza un trabajo de promoción de destino determinante y profesional.

Reuniones impecables Smooth meetings Con más de 13,300 habitaciones en hoteles de primera línea, y más de 100.000 delegados registrados por el Buró de Convenciones que visitaron la Isla por congresos y exposiciones en el último año, determinan que Puerto Rico sea uno de los destinos más requeridos por las asociaciones profesionales para la realización de sus reuniones internacionales.
The island offers over 13,300 top-level hotel rooms, and its Convention Bureau registered more than 100,000 delegates that visited the island for conferences and fairs only last year, an evidence that Puerto Rico is one of the most popular destinations chosen by the professional societies organizing their international events.
San Juan, por su condición de capital, reúne la mayor demanda, pero las instalaciones existentes en otras regiones conjugan una oferta variada para satisfacer las demandas de los viajeros de reuniones más exigentes, con hoteles de cadenas internacionales y locales con centros de convenciones que compiten con los más destacados del mundo.

Many of the hotels and resorts offer premises perfectly fit for incentive groups, and are close to the sort of attractions typically sought by these travelers. Magnificent swimming pools and leisure areas complement the spacious terraces and balconies that make these resorts a true delight for one's senses.

Muchos hoteles cuentan con una muy buena infraestructura para convenciones, las cuales se han venido desarrollando en la isla en muy buena cantidad y calidad en los últimos años, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta su relación especial con los Estados Unidos. Esto permite realizar eventos nacionales donde los participantes tienen la sensación de viajar a otro país sin los requisitos normales de un viaje al exterior.
Many hotels have a very good infrastructure for conventions, having thrived in the island in recent years, in good numbers and very good quality, especially favored by their unique relation with the United States. This allows them to hold national events, where the attendees feel as if they were traveling abroad without the regular requirements of an overseas trip.
Pero a pesar de esta situación favorable, todo cambió a partir de noviembre de 2005, con la inauguración oficial del Centro de Convenciones de Puerto Rico, convirtiéndose en el más grande del Caribe y con la tecnología más avanzada a la fecha, convocando a los eventos más exigentes del mercado, no solo regional sino también internacional.
This favorable situation was further enhanced after November 2005, when everything changed owing to the official opening of Puerto Rico's Convention Center, conceived to be the largest in the Caribbean, endowed with the newest technology known to date, summoning the market's most demanding events, not only regional, but international as well.

La industria farmacéutica es responsable de dos tercios de las exportaciones de Puerto Rico. The pharma industry accounts for two thirds of Puerto Rico's exports. ¿Cómo evalúa el movimiento actual de pasajeros para reuniones e incentivos en Puerto Rico y qué evolución espera para los próximos años?
How do you evaluate the present movement of passengers for meetings and incentives in Puerto Rico and what evolution do you expect for the next years?
Evaluamos el estado de nuestro negocio de reuniones y convenciones tanto por el número de reservas como por el tamaño de los grupos reservados. En el último año fiscal (2007/2008), el Buró aumentó el total de reservas de grupos en la Isla en un 20 por ciento, con un total de 236.017 noches de estadía.
We evaluate the health of our meetings and conventions business by both the number of bookings and the size of our groups booked. In the past fiscal year (FY 07-08), the Bureau increased its overall group bookings to the Island by 20 percent, with a total of 236,017 room nights.
Hemos visto un definitivo incremento en las reservas de asociaciones en los tres primeros trimestres de 2008 en relación al año anterior. Las reservas de asociaciones alcanzan ahora el 25 por ciento de nuestras reservas contra el 17 % del año anterior. Esto se debe en gran parte a la apertura del Centro de Convenciones de Puerto Rico y otras sedes para conferencias en la Isla así como un serio proceso de remodelación en las principales propiedades. Adicionalmente, hemos visto que las reservas corporativas se mantuvieron igual, con bloqueos menores de noches de alojamiento. Las reservas de asociaciones, sin embargo, se mantienen en forma consistente en términos del tamaño de los grupos.
We've seen a definite increase in our association bookings for the first three quarters of 2008 vs. the previous year. Association bookings now account for 25 percent of our bookings versus 17% in the year prior. This is in large part due to the opening of the Puerto Rico Convention Center and other conference facilities on the Island as well as a serious remodeling process in all the major properties. In addition, we've seen the number of our corporate bookings remaining about the same, with smaller room night blocks. The association bookings, however, are remaining consistent in terms of group size. We are in the Board of Directors of COCAL and besides our participation in such a renowned organization, we see it as a unique opportunity to spread the word about Puerto Rico as an incentives and meetings destination. We also participate in La Cumbre and other exhibition shows that allow us to showcase the uniqueness of our destination to host incentive groups. We see incentives on the rise with so many improvements in our hotel inventory and infrastructure. The Island has great attractions and between the tourist attractions and the shopping benefits for our friends from Latin America we see very good opportunities to continue promoting this market. We are definitely the most Hispanic city under the U.S. flag and the fact

También estamos trabajando en aumentar nuestro acceso aéreo lo que hará de Puerto Rico un destino aún más amigable para reuniones e incentivos desde América Latina. ¿Qué cambios se han registrado luego de la inauguración del Centro de Convenciones y cuáles se esperan cuando se finalice la construcción del hotel y los otros servicios del Distrito de Convenciones? Cuando fue inaugurado el Centro de Convenciones de Puerto Rico en Noviembre de 2005, sabíamos que las reuniones en la Isla nunca volverían a ser iguales; estábamos ingresando en una nueva fase desarrollando uno de los más significativos generadores del negocio del turismo para la Isla. Desde la apertura del Centro, dimos la bienvenida a grupos de asociaciones grandes y de alto perfil, así como a las mayores convenciones que jamás se hayan realizado en la Isla. Esto incluye la Asociación de la Guardia Nacional de los Estados Unidos, AARP y la Cámara de Comercio Hispana en EE.UU., trayendo cada una de ellas más de 5.000 delegados a la isla. Un hotel central de 500 habitaciones, el Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino se está construyendo en el Distrito. La propiedad abrirá sus puertas a fines de 2009. Otras dos construcciones se completarán en 2012, ofreciendo 552 habitaciones adicionales en el Distrito. El Distrito, que espera finalizarse en 2012, será un espacio dinámico multiuso. Además del Centro y sus hoteles, el Distrito incluirá zonas residenciales, de oficinas y comerciales, centros de entretenimiento y restaurantes. Nuevas calles de acceso así como un atractivo boulevard conectando la zona de Condado con el Distrito del Centro de Convenciones y el Viejo San Juan, han sido desarrolladas para hacer esta área fácilmente accesible al aeropuerto, el distrito financiero y otras atracciones. El Aeropuerto Internacional Luis Muñoz Marín finalizó una renovación de US$ 400 millones, incluyendo un terminal de US$ 77 millones y un centro comercial de US$ 15,3

Moving forward, we do expect that the challenges of the global financial crisis will affect meetings to the destination, most likely within the corporate market, but Puerto Rico will continue to grow its association business with more and larger association group bookings at our hotel conference facilities and the Puerto Rico Convention Center. We are also working on increasing our air access which will make Puerto Rico an even friendlier destination for meetings and incentives from Latin America. What changes were noted after the inauguration of the Convention Center and which ones are expected when the construction of the hotel and other services of the District of Conventions will be finished? When the Puerto Rico Convention Center opened in November 2005, we knew that meetings on the Island would never be the same again; we were entering a new phase in developing one of the most significant generators of tourism business for the Island. Since the opening of the Center, we've welcomed large, high-profile association groups and have welcomed our largest citywide conventions ever held on the Island. These include the National Guard Association of the United States, AARP and the US Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, each of which brought more than 5,000 delegates to the Island. A 500-room headquarter hotel, the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino is being built at the District. The property will open in late 2009. Two other properties will break ground on construction for completion in 2012, offering an additional 552 rooms within the District. The District which is on track for completion in 2012 will be a multi-use dynamic gathering place. In addition to the Center and its hotels, District elements will include residential, business and retail space, entertainment venues as well as restaurants. New access roads as well as an attractive boulevard that connects the Condado area with the Convention Center District and Old San Juan has been developed to make all this area very accessible to the airport, the financial district and other attractions. The International Luis Muñoz Marín airport has undergone a $400 million renovation, including a $77 million terminal, and a $15.3 million shopping mall to better service our visitors and group market. Which is, from your point of view, the greatest strength of Puerto Rico to candidate as venue for international meetings? Geographically, Puerto Rico is at the Center of the Americas and serves as a natural meeting point for

With the weak dollar, the exchange rate for groups to Puerto Rico is STRONG and a value opportunity to make meeting dollars work harder for delegates. Within everything what implies the incoming tourism, what place occupies the incentive trips and which is its main offer? Incentive groups account for about 25 percent of our corporate group bookings. The city's name has undergone odd changes along history. When Christopher Columbus discovered the island, he christened it Saint John the Baptist, but years later, conquistador Juan Ponce de León discovered a wide bay on the northern coast, and called it Puerto Rico. As time went by the two names were swapped the island took the name of Puerto Rico, and the bay, the port and the city, were better known as San Juan.

Es una ciudad tranquila, con detalles marcados en su arquitectura y sus plazas, de extrema pulcritud y señorío, orgullosa de su situación como segunda ciudad de la isla. A peaceful city with rich, meticulous architecture and squares, Ponce is an extremely dainty and lordly town, proud of being ranked as the island's second city. Among its most representative buildings, you will find the Old Fire Department Park (Antiguo Parque de Bombas), constructed in 1882 as a Fair's main pavilion, then transformed into the Fire Department, to end up as a museum; the City Hall (Casa Alcaldía), a colonial building; the Las Delicias Park, a social gathering point across the Casa Alcaldía; the La Perla Theater, a neoclassic building, and Guadalupe's Cathedral, a temple first erected in the 1830's, and partially destroyed by the 1918 earthquakes; its façade was subsequently reconstructed (1931 - 1937), and declared Cathedral by Pope Pius XI in 1924.

Some of the festivities worth attending are the Patron's Day, honoring the Virgin of Candelaria early in February, close to a very colorful Mardi Gras. Mayagüez will be hosting the 2010 Pan American Games, providing the infrastructure needed to practice all sorts of sports, in the outskirts of the Villa Olímpica, the center used by Puerto Rico's high performance athletes.

Ubicado en las montañas al norte de Puerto Rico y a 30 minutos de la ciudad del mismo nombre, el Observatorio de Arecibo aloja el radar y radio-telescopio más grande de la tierra.
Located in the northern ranges of Puerto Rico, 30 minutes away from the city that bears that name, the Arecibo Observatory has the world's largest radar and radiotelescope, attracting scientists from all over, who go there to study the skies.
Científicos de todo el mundo acuden a este lugar a estudiar objetos astronómicos y la atmósfera del planeta tierra.
Its 38,778 aluminum panels form the world's largest reflector that weighs 300 tones. Each panel is adjusted individually to achieve a round curvature with a 2mm precision.
Los 38,778 paneles de aluminio forman el reflector más grande del mundo. Cada panel es ajustado de forma individual para lograr una curvatura esférica con una precisión de 2 mm. El reflector tiene un peso de 300 toneladas. Es una experiencia única contemplar el contraste del gigantesco radar de tonos grises con la espectacular vegetación de las montañas que lo rodean con sus diferentes matices de verdes.
Contemplating the contrast of the huge gray radar against the spectacular vegetation of the surrounding mountains with its range of green nuances is indeed a unique experience.

El Yunque National R ainforest
El Bosque Nacional El Yunque es el único bosque pluvial tropical en el Sistema de Bosques Nacionales de los Estados Unidos, el que cuenta con poco más de once mil hectáreas, destacándose por su clima tropical y su gran biodiversidad.
El Yunque National Forest is the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forests System with over eleven thousand hectares, especially appreciated for its tropical climate and vast biodiversity.
Casi la totalidad de los terrenos del bosque están compuestos por la Sierra de Luquillo, que alcanza una altura de mil metros sobre el nivel del mar. Sus empinadas laderas pueden recibir hasta 508 centímetros de lluvia al año en la parte más elevada, teniendo una temperatura promedio de 21º C, con escasa variación, un clima ideal para la exuberante vegetación tropical.
Sierra de Luquillo com prises almost all the forest's territory, rising one thousand meters above sea level. Its steep slopes get as much as 508 centimeters rainfall annually in its highest areas, with quite an even average temperature of 21º C, an ideal climate for its exuberant tropical vegetation.

Fajardo Su nombre proviene del apellido gallego del hidalgo que descubrió el río del mismo nombre. Es conocida como la Ciudad del Sol Naciente porque es el primer pueblo de la isla que recibe el sol.
Named after the Galician gentleman that discovered the river that also bears his name. The town is also known as the City of the Rising Sun, being the first town in the island to receive dawn.
La economía de Fajardo, tradicionalmente, se había orientado hacia el comercio a través del puerto, el cultivo de la caña y la ganadería. Actualmente depende de la manufactura de equipos médicos, el turismo y el comercio.
Traditionally, Fajardo's economy had been related to port trade, sugar cane and livestock. At present it thrives mainly thanks to the manufacture of medical equipment, tourism and trade.
Por este motivo residen en la zona ejecutivos de empresas internacionales dedicadas a este tipo de producción, y sus hoteles son sede de una diversidad de reuniones que generan estas industrias.
Hence, the city is home to senior staff of international corporations involved in the above-mentioned production, and its hotels host a broad range of meetings generated by those industries.
