“ If we only win the audience, we have lost, if we only succeed to irritate, we have lost as well.” K3 INTERNATIONAL SHORT FILM FESTIVAL The K3 Short Film Festival started back in the year 2007 as a spontaneous event. By now it is taking place in three countries, in three cities – Udine (Italy), Ljubljana (Slovenia) and Villach (Austria) on 8 days. With more than 1.700 film entries from all around the world, the number almost tripled compared to the last year. This enormous growth is a challenge for the K3 team to keep pace and to keep the known quality of K3.

Originally K3 was derived from “Kommerz, Kunst, Kino” (commerce, art, cinema) and its programme strived to draw borders and at the same time build bridges between these contradictory terms. As a result of this philosophy K3 is open to all genres and expressions. Avoiding special programmes for specific audiences, it creates a mix of genres from classic fiction to experimental films - to name probably the most contradictory - always being sure to keep a balance of irritating and winning films. Indeed in these two terms – irritating and winning (the audience) – the borders of commerce and art are trespassed, as it is an approach that is used by either of them.

K3 film programmes demand active involvement and interpretation of the audience as well as their passive (!) involvement (admittedly also as a reaction to the more and more passive media consumption, we keep enforcing films that demand active involvement). The one-of-a-kind concept of combining three countries in one festival in a region where not only three countries meet but in reality three cultures – the Romanic, the Slavic and the German culture – adds another meta-level to the entire festival and gives K3 the strength to look forward positively.

Council for Culture City of Udine

Council for Culture City of ljubljana

Vice Mayor, council for Culture City of Villach

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

For the first time the city of Ljubljana participates in the tradition in short films, an important section of slovenian film production, in which several national and international awards have been won. In this context it is important to further encourage the production of shorts in our country, the collaboration with the K3 short film festival is a great opportunity for this purpose. By supporting this central european project, the city of Ljubljana as a capital city and as a part of the region, helps to promote and to spread the culture of short film within a local and international audience. For Ljubljana are collaborating Slovenska kinoteka and Kinodvor, two acknowleged institutions in this field, which will certainly contribute to encourage the creation of short films in our region.

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen, dear visitors of the K3 Short Film Festival Villach,

within the framework of a well-established partnership of many years, the two cities of Udine and Villach have together consolidated an International Short Film Festival in 2011, which has also involved the neighbouring city of Ljubljana in 2012. The K3 International Short Film Festival is an excellent example of cross-border cooperation in the cultural area. Due to the cultural and linguistic diversity of this European region, the Alpe-Adria area offers geographically advantageous conditions for exchange. It provides the chance for integrated development and is also of high importance for the economy. This internationally active exchange, already generated by K3, can be clearly seen as a promising sign for our common future, that profoundly extends our horizons.

Uros Grilc

Three cities – one region – one festival. The K3 international Short Film Festival overcomes borders and languages, and brings together film enthusiasts from three countries. For a region at the interface of three cultures it can be taken as a valid example of how our common future can be prepared through communication and cooperation. This is an issue that our city’s policy is pursuing since a long time. After the two local festivals in Udine and Ljubljana, Villach is the host city of the International Short Film Festival this year. On four days there will be the possibility of getting to know contemporary local and international cinematography. I would like to thank the whole staff of K3 for the cross-border activity and wish all movie fans new experiences and long lasting impressions at the K3 Short Film Festival in Villach.

K3 UDINE - ITALY Udine with slightly more than 100.000 inhabitants is situated in the North-East of Italy. The city offers a university, several frescos by Giambattista Tiepolo, a recently established theatre, a Drama Academy and the typical Italian-like colourful life on the streets. For cinephiles it is most likely known of the Far East Film Festival. The same association that runs the festival manages two cinemas in town. One of those two, VISIONARIO, where also K3 takes place, stands out with special programmes and an in-house media center. Concerning festivals, the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia with its approximately 1,2 million inhabitants, is vivacious with its outstanding festivals Le Giornate del Cinema Muto in Pordenone and Trieste Film Festival. Film is taught at University in a theoretical manner that is put into practice later.

10|

Film-makers from Friuli Venezia Giulia have to struggle with little support, in particular for short films. Despite this, the K3 Friuli Venezia Giulia competition had a good number of applicants and an interesting variety of genres. Although, the short film is underestimated, the increase of visitors to K3 Udine every year, confirms the necessity of innovation and cultural exchange in the region.

between the living and the dead as well as the great historic significance of the place make it a unique case in the world.

K3 Ljubljana - SLOVENIA Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, with its dynamic, young-minded air is the third city to join the K3 festival. With approximately 280.000 inhabitants it is the biggest of the K3 cities and without doubt, the one with the most vivid cinema culture. K3 was hosted by the arthouse cinema Kinodvor and Kinoteka, a cinema that presents a rich programme of retrospectives and special focuses. There are well-established festivals in Slovenia like Ljubljana International Film Festival, Animateka or Kino Otok – just to name a few. Next to those festivals, K3 is looking forward to take its stance as a Short Film Festival.

30|

The first time a K3 competition for Slovenian short films was held, it showed the potential, which lies in this country with its 2 million inhabitants. There is a long tradition of Avant-Garde Filmmaking in Slovenia, although it seems to have lost pace compared to international, innovative cinema movements. “Seems to be: There was and is a lot to be discovered for us and the international audience. Another reason, why K3 is looking forward to the ongoing cooperation with Ljubljana.

K3 VILLACH - AUSTRIA Villach with just below 60.000 inhabitants, is the smallest city of the K3 cities. Its economic progress, but moreover its cultural openness derives from its long heritage of being an important traffic-junction. This could be the reason why the idea for this cross-cultural festival started in Villach – a city very close to the borders of Italy and Slovenia with its inhabitants, that have a strong longing for the South. For moviegoers Villach offers the Stadtkino (city cinema) in the centre of town, where also K3 takes place. A part of it is run by an association called “Filmstudio” that shows arthouse cinema in original language. Villach is the second biggest town of Carinthia, a region with around 560.000 inhabitants. In general, its people are conservative but at the same time

50|

cutting-edge artists derive from it. In the fields of cinema there is no educational facility, production possibilities are very limited. That leads to many filmmakers leaving Carinthia. For example no one taking part in the local competition still lives in Carinthia and at the same time the quality of works is overwhelming.

K3 has therefore joined forces with “Kino aus Kärnten” to improve the situation in this neglected field of arts. In conjunction with the first Carinthian competition for short films, it is also a call back to artists that have left the country.

A TRIBUTE TO FILMSTUDIO VILLACH Filmstudio Villach exists since 1984. Ever since it made the impossible possible: It offers a wide range of Art-House and Independent Cinema with a slight focus on World-Cinema, but above all – all films are shown in original language. Something that even in big cities is acclaimed as “English Cinema” or with other creative titles, for Filmstudio it always has been out of question. Or how Elisabeth Grebenicek, the programming director, once said clearly: “Who wants to see Sean Penn speaking German?” As a tribute to this work, we show “Mont Real” by Peter Putz. For years a film still of this early video-art work serves as the cover of the monthly published programme folder.

MONT REAL P.eter Putz, 1988/89, 16mm, Canada, 20 min Saturday, November 24th, 11.00 am at Filmstudio Villach Mont Real is a satirical view of our Western civilisation, something between a live action film and an animation film, a succession of associations combining aspects of traditional and everyday life in North America and stereotyped European, particularly Austrian attitudes and behaviour patterns. The film deals with our overpowering fantasies, our tendency to repress certain elements of our mental lives, and with our enslavement as dependent consumers in a materialistic society. This is shown in a mostly ironical and contrapuntal development of sound and vision.

“The extremely rapid development of the various visual aspects of the film corresponds with today’s hasty and short-lived deluge of information and stimulation. It also illustrates two parallel but wholly different levels of life and argument, thus reaching the limits of one’s perceptive faculties and certain visual habits. One has to accept the fact that one cannot possibly perceive every single detail and must admit the limits of one’s perceptive facilities, knowing that whatever one sees is only part of the whole truth” Peter Putz 66|

movi-e-mento presents itself

Saturday, November 24th, 3.00 pm at Parkcafé Villach The concept of movi-e-mento was first developed for K3 Udine. There the film project “The Lifeblood” for which 20 persons have found together, was presented as an example of collaboration. At the same time the idea and necessity of a Cinematic Center for Carinthia, Friuli Venezia Giulia and Slovenia was discussed. In order to move forward, movi-e-mento takes the next step at K3 Villach and presents itself again to the public with the development made in the meantime. The Concept and Plan movi-e-mento wants to make possible varied projects in the fields of cinema. Be it a workshop on analog film, be it an archive of films in a certain region, be it post-production for a specific film - just to name many diverse. To make those projects happen movi-e-mento wants to build up an active community with real-life meetings.

Then everyone can enter a project to be validated by a to-be defined commission. If the project is accepted, it will gain all the support of movi-e-mento. Basic steps to be taken - creating a directory of professionals and institutions - building up a basis of active members - promoting next call for projects - and above all: Find agreement on this concept! On a long-term basis it will be crucial to develop a sustainable financing model. The aim is to avoid solely voluntary service, but quite on the contrary, to support professionalism and develop job opportunities. Follow us on www.movi-e-mento.com

SPecial screening for Youngsters

Friday, November 23rd, 11.00am at Stadtkino Villach With the example of last year’s participant film – Home, Francesco Filippi, Italy 2011, 15’ – Prof. Arno Russegger will let 12 to 13 year-old pupils feel what film is. His aim is to let the young ones – before they take stance for or against something – develop their own point of interpretation, and before all others - to develop their own feelings towards cinema. His approach is amongst others strongly inspired by Alain Bergsala and his book “ L’hypothèse cinéma – Kino als Kunst”. For example, Russegger will especially work on the shout, that is so commonly used in cinema. The presentation or rather the cooperation with the pupils had been worked out together with students throughout a seminar held at the University of Klagenfurt. The screening was made possible with the kindly support of Landesjugendreferat Kärnten. |67

IV. WAL(L)ZEN 35mm, color, 6’, 1989

....................................................................................................... The title of Two Times in One Space (1976-1984) does not allow room for questioning Galeta’s focus on this subject; Time and Space. Although many of his films could appear as found footage works, this is the only one time where Galeta borrowed images and he treats them almost as a Duchamp-ean “ready made.”His use of titles is again utilized, but here only in order to highlight his respect of the original material, a short film by Nicola Stojanoviç. A simple optical and sound effect converts this already gripping short to one of Galeta’s most conceptual single channel films, a battlefield of space and time. Circles and spheres are a recurring motif in Galeta’s work.

....................................................................................................... sfaira (1971-1984) dedicated to Pythagoras and Plato is a homage to two of his favourite spheroids: the Earth and the Sun. The protagonist, as we are informed by the title sequence, is a sculpture named Earthbound Sun and the film’s photography, a stunning example of optical printing techniques, shows his affection to both. Sfaira’s subject, the sun and the cosmos appears as a precursor to Galeta’s magnum opus Water Pulu 1869 1896 (1973-1987). Galeta with this filmdelivers a pictorial and literary Maximalism, in a way that only cinema could do but had not done before.

....................................................................................................... Galeta has created a black hole, an object whose gravitational pull inside the radius of cinema is so strong that no film viewer can escape it. He applies a mathematical and geometrical editing system in a film that shows hardly any edits. His conceptual manipulation of themere footage of a water-polomatch is at the same time as eye-catching, complex and original as anything that ever came out of an optical printer. The film is explicitly abstract and at first this visual strength allows deliberate implications of its own narrative nature to go unnoticed. As the nuances in both sound and image continue and peak with the end credits, the presence of an unseen narrative is established.

....................................................................................................... WAL(L)ZEN was re-worked at the Béla Balázs Studio in Hungary and determines, according to Galeta, the basic principle of movement. A piano player is able to perform a Chopin piece backwards and Galeta will film it backwards and forwards creating four different variations of a movement bound to time. The rhythmical editing concept of WAL(L)ZEN is one of the key elements that makes a first appearance in his work. This musical geometry of montage will characterize all his films, even those that have no visible cuts or are completely silent.

V. PÍRÂMÍDAS 1972-1984 35mm, color, 12’, 1984

....................................................................................................... PiRaMidas (1984) which was also produced at the BBS, begins with dedications to Hermes, Lao Tse and Einstein among others. Even the preoccupation with stating the datesof first conception and final realization of his films (in PiRaMidas 1972-1984) is part of this process, while at the same time yet another obsession with time. PiRaMidas is a geometrical timetravel by train. To a certain point in space and back again. The first specific idea for the film PiRaMidas 1972 1984 came from this drawing by Szpakowski. The use of title and closing credit sequences for adding well-hidden or more obvious connotations is another Galeta trademark.

He currently resides in Paris, France. www.dimeshow.com BEN RUSSELL on the Trypps series “Using a fabricated Old English word as its guiding principle, this ongoing series of (mostly) 16mm films is conceptually organized around the possible meanings that its title elicits - physical voyages, psychedelic journeys, and a phenomenological experience of the world. Begun in 2005 in a somewhat vain attempt to hold cinema up as a mirror to the live and fully embodied reception of the crazy noise music scene in Providence, Rhode Island, the TRYPPS films quickly expanded their formal and critical language to include the various poles of action painting, avant-garde cinema, portraiture, stand-up comedy, global capitalism, and trance-dance a lá Jean Rouch. While the form of these works varies radically from one to the next, when taken as a whole they can be seen to enunciate what their maker calls “psychedelic ethnography” - a practice whose aim is a knowledge of the Self/self, a movement towards understanding in which the trip is both the means and the end.

A psychedelic op-art (optical art, visual art that makes use of optical illusions) film that references the traditions of hand-painted Avant-Garde cinema by replacing it with something entirely different. Hypnosis is imminent.

The Forest Inside Your Mind. Revealed.

The third part in a series of films dealing with naturallyderived psychedelia. Shot during a performance by Rhode Island noise band Lightning Bolt, this film documents the transformation of a rock audience’s collective freak-out into a trance ritual of the highest spiritual order.

Using a 35mm strip of motion picture slug featuring the recently deceased American comedian Richard Pryor, this extended Rorschach assault on the eyes moves out of a flickering chaos created by incompatible film gauges into a punchline involving historically incompatible racial stereotypes.

“A night sky fills with light shimmers and flecks, surface markings, heavenly bodies. It’s an ocean, a well, a screen, a mirror, a portal. Blackness/void cluttered by growing ephemera [...] hair, ghosts, comets, cartoons, demons [...] ######### #Overkill. Birth/ Death. Moment by moment, symmetrical—organized like geometry, like Muslim rugs, like math.” JT Rogstad, The International Exposition (TIE)

“Ben Russell continues his initial impulse for the series, the exploration of “naturally-derived psychedelia”, with this cadenced phantasmagoria of negative imagery and negative space. The tendrils of sharp white trees become osseous arteries against the black void of the sky. The spiraling spine of a massive tree collides against a spanning pan of a branch twined into two through a mirroring effect. Representation morphs into abstraction as the film becomes a study in density and fearful symmetry in the forest of sight. By film’s end, the arboreal is left far behind as the film strip becomes an engulfing, vertiginous maw.” Chris Stults, Viennale 2009

“...we return to the models of Caravaggio or Garrel - bodies effectively transformed into islands of individual gestures and expressions via a spotlight and lingering camera, before the film cryptically bends upon itself: henceforth the image (through slow-motion effect) and sound (through Joseph Grimm’s spacey drones) conspire to directly invoke the spectator into the raptures.” Mubarak Ali, Supposed Aura

“Divisible stand up comedy from beyond the grave, adjust your set, rabbits ears tuned to the Bardo Plane.” Mark McElhatten, Rotterdam International Film Festival

V. Trypps #5 (Dubai) 3:00, 16mm, silent, 2008

VI. Trypps #6 (Malobi) 12:00, 16mm, 2009

VII. Trypps #7 (Badlands) 10:00, Super16mm, 2010

VIII. River Rites 11:30, Super16mm (projected digitally), 2011

A short treatise on the semiotics of capital, happiness, and phenomenology under the flickering neon of global capitalism.

“From the Maroon village of Malobi in Suriname, South America, this single-take film offers a strikingly contemporary take on a Jean Rouch classic. It’s Halloween at the Equator, Andrei Tarkovsky for the jungle set.” Ben Russell

“Trypps #7 (Badlands) charts, through an intimate long-take, a young woman’s LSD trip in the Badlands National Park before descending into a psychedelic, formal abstraction of the expansive desert landscape. Concerned with notions of the romantic sublime, phenomenological experience, and secular spiritualism, the work continues Russell’s unique investigation into the possibilities of cinema as a site for transcendence.” Michael Green, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago

“Trance dance and water implosion, a kino-line drawn between secular freak-outs and religious phenomena. Filmed in a single take at a sacred site on the Upper Suriname River, the minor secrets of a Saramaccan animist everyday are revealed as time itself is undone. Rites are the new Trypps - embodiment is our eternal everything.” Ben Russell

“A radically restricted camera was similarly fixed on half of a neon sign in Ben Russell’s Trypps #5 (Dubai) (2008), which displayed the letters “APP” and only half of a “Y” in an erratic, discontinuous pulse. If the mention of Dubai conjures a cosmopolitan skyline, Russell renounces the possibility of seeing even a single street. As Mark McElhatten writes in the program notes, “Happiness is always, incomplete,” and here, in a critique that Debord may have particularly appreciated, it’s a brightly colored sign for a shop that promises everything but sells nothing.” Genevie Yu, Reverse Shot

“Animists are people who recognise that the world is full of persons, some of whom are human, and that life is always lived in relationship with others.” Graham Harvey, Animism

|3x3 competition

The 3x3 competition emerged from the wish to support local filmmakers. At the same time K3´s inherent concept of establishing crossborder cooperation has called for a supraregional competition where filmmakers meet and where the audience gets to know topics and filmic approaches of the neighbouring regions.

Therefore for the first time local competitions were held in Friuli Venezia Giulia, Slovenia and Carinthia. From each of them a jury nominates three films to take part at the 3x3 supra-regional competition. Out of these 9 films a jury will award one film with the 3x3 award worth € 1.500.-

3x3 COMPETITION PROGRAMME

The films from FVG and Slovenia have already been selected and are marked as such in the respective film programs. KINO AUS KARNTEN CINEMA FROM CARINTHIA

In the last years Austrian Film has gained astounding recognition from International Festivals. What is rarely noticed that this “Austrian film wonder” is supported by a lot of people that originate from Carinthia as many of them had left their homeland for lack of proper working possibilities. “Kino aus Kärnten” – initiated by Prof. Arno Russegger, wants to highlight this fact by showing cinematic works with Carinthian participation. Every film is followed by discussions with the filmmakers about their professional and artistic situation, how the film production has developed and about future projects.

LASSNITZ

A long-time goal of “Kino aus Kärnten” is to re-establish a proper, independent film fund. At a public podium the requirements of this fund are presented but also, what steps can and should be taken in the meantime.

LASSNITZ 76’ AUSTRIA 2012 At the center of the film stands a railway bridge – 5.6 meters wide, 3.53 meters high, 24.5 meters long and 78 tons of weight – that makes a long journey from the southeast of Austria to the northwest of Germany. In long takes, the observer becomes part of a sedate curtain. Time becomes noticeable and decelerates with the continuation of events. Over several nights, the transport crosses Europe, putting the brakes on hectic traffic, as if a fossil from another time wanted to prove itself again for the present.

It asks the meaning of life, about how to fill the gap between birth and death, and what is happiness. Short documentary pieces tell the stories of some very different protagonists of a generation: from the forest-owning family in their stately home to the factory worker following her daily routine. www.whatislove-derfilm.at
