2011 SEASON PREVIEW

Kansas State will begin its 37th season of women’s tennis as the spring 2011 season opens on Jan. 21 against New Mexico in Manhattan. K-State (7-13, 4-7 Big 12) is coming off its best Big 12 record since the 2006 season and the most overall victories since the 2008 campaign. The 2010 season also featured the following highlights: • K-State registered the first 7-0 win in the program’s history over Kansas. • The Wildcats defeated No. 70 ranked Texas Tech, 5-2, on April 25. • Antea Huljev and Karla Bonacic each defeated a pair of ranked opponents in singles action, as Huljev defeated (63) Elze Potgieter of Texas A&M and (88) Ana-Maria Constantinescu of Oklahoma while Bonacic set down (61) Taylor Ormand or Baylor and (117) Melisa Esposito of Colorado. • Last season’s freshmen class of: Bonacic (12), Carmen Borau Ramos (10) and Ana Gomez Aleman (11) all captured 10 or more singles victories. • Three Wildcats were named to the Academic All-Big 12 first team: Petra Chuda, Nina Sertic and Natasha Vieira.

The Wildcats will feature a very experienced lineup this season, as all six of the players from its primary lineup return this season. KState will be led by senior Antea Huljev. The product of Velenje, Slovenia returns to the Wildcats for her senior season following a strong 2010 campaign which saw her finish with a team-leading 1521 singles record, including an 8-10 mark from the number one position in the lineup. During the 2010 fall slate, Huljev advanced to the second round of the ITA Central Regional for the third straight season and finished with a 3-2 mark in the opening portion of the schedule. With three singles victories this spring, Huljev will reach the 50-win plateau (47-59). Joining Huljev in a leadership role this season will be juniors Petra

Chuda and Nina Sertic. The pair of 2010 Academic All-Big 12 first team recipients each put together strong 2010 fall results and will look to use it as a positive springboard into the spring season. Chuda tallied a 3-4 record in the fall and captured the consolation title in her draw at the Hoosier Classic. Last season, the native of Sokolnice, Czech Republic carded a career-high 13 singles victories (13-18) and notched a 5-7 mark from the number six position in the singles lineup. Chuda has excelled when matches extend to a third-set, as she has built a 9-8 mark in three-set matches. Sertic was one of K-State’s strongest players in the fall, as she finished with a 5-4 singles record and a 6-4 mark in doubles action. Included in her strong spring singles record were a pair of finals appearances at a pair of events. This was a positive sign following her 10-23 mark from the 2010 spring season. K-State will look to its sophomore class of Karla Bonacic, Carmen Borau Ramos and Ana Gomez Aleman to provide the Wildcats with a

strong backbone to its singles and doubles lineups. Bonacic overcame a slow start to her career to finish the season as one of the Wildcats’ most solid players. The product of Split, Croatia finished her debut season with a 12-15 record, including a pair of wins over ranked opponents from Baylor and Colorado and an 8-3 mark in her final 11 matches of the spring. In the 2010 fall campaign, she notched a 3-4 record including a finals appearance at the Hoosier Classic. Borau Ramos displayed a toughness in her rookie season with the Wildcats, as she was 3-5 in three-set matches and secured a 10-17 overall mark. Her first season was highlighted by a four-match win streak in the heart of K-State’s Big 12 schedule. Gomez Aleman pieced together a 4-5 singles record and a 7-4 doubles mark in the 2010 fall slate which shows an improvement over her freshman season. The native of Murcia, Spain tallied an 1122 singles record during her debut campaign, highlighted by a three-
