• Cotton Bowl officials estimate that K-State fans purchased some 40,000-plus tickets, passing the previous record held by Texas Tech in the 1995 Cotton Bowl... Tech’s total of 28,232 was surpassed by the Wildcat fans in just a 72-hour period in early December when KState was tabbed as a participant.

DALLAS, Texas -- An estimated 45,000 Kansas State fans descended on Dallas to watch the Wildcats in their first-ever New Year’s Day Bowl and were witness to one of the most exciting games of the bowl season. After taking a 15-5 lead following a 72-yard touchdown pass from Brian Kavanagh to Kevin Lockett, the Wildcats saw why BYU quarterback Steve Sarkisian was considered one of the nation’s best. The Cougar QB tossed two fourth-quarter touchdowns to lead No. 5 BYU to a 19-15 Cotton Bowl victory. Following Sarkisian’s 28-yard scoring strike to Kealaluhi with 3:39 remaining in the game, Kavanagh and Lockett led the Wildcats to a first down at the BYU 12-yard line with around one minute remaining. But, Kavanagh’s pass to Jimmy Dean was picked off at the 3-yard line by Omarr Morgan to preserve BYU’s 14th win. The game’s first score came when Cotton Bowl Defensive MVP Shay Muirbrook tackled Kavanagh in the end zone for a safety in the first quarter. After the free kick, BYU scored again on an Ethan Pochman 39-yard field goal. K-State had a hard time getting on track until the final play of the first half. Kavanagh heaved a Hail Mary into the end zone, where, after the ball was deflected by a BYU defender, K-State junior Andre Anderson scooped the ball in for a touchdown. Following the PAT that gave K-State a 7-5 lead, a penalty on BYU forced the teams to return from the locker room so that the Wildcats could try for two points. Mike Lawrence made it pay off by scoring to give KSU an 8-5 lead heading into halftime. K-State scored its second touchdown of the game when Kevin Lockett bounced off tacklers following a reception on a short slant pattern and raced 72 yards down the left sideline.

• The Wildcats tallied points for the 63rd time in the last 64 games... The only shutout since a 10-0 blanking by Colorado in 1991 was a 12-0 shutout by the Buffaloes against K-State on Nov. 16, 1996. • K-State continued its streak of scoring in every bowl game, dating back to a first-ever appearance in the 1982 Independence Bowl against Wisconsin. • The 1996 senior class finished with its fourth-consecutive season with at least nine victories and its fourth-straight bowl appearance... The seniors compiled a home record of 21-3-1 and an impressive 37-10-1 overall mark, which included a 2-2 bowl record... No other group had put together such an impressive string of bowl appearances, home record and overall record in the 101 years of K-State football. • K-State fell for the first time when senior quarterback Brian Kavanagh threw at least one touchdown pass, breaking a streak of eight-straight wins. • Kavanagh’s 72-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Lockett was a career best for both players and was also a K-State bowl record... It was the seventh-longest TD pass in Cotton Bowl history.
