Johnson & Wales Volleyball Coaching Staff Coach Callie Phillips brings fourteen years of coaching experience to the Johnson & Wales volleyball program. She considers it an honor and a privilege to be the head coach at Johnson & Wales and works hard to maintain a program that reflects the school's values and makes its faculty, staff, and students proud. l

Coach Phillips played her high school ball at West Davidson High School in Lexington, NC where she earned three all-conference selections her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons and was also named Conference Player of the Year in her final season. She was a part of three thrilling state playoff runs with the Green Dragons and helped establish a tradition of excellence in volleyball at West Davidson High School. Due to health concerns, her playing days were cut short after high school, but she continued to be active with various clubs and teams as she completed her college coursework.

Upon graduation from Appalachian State University in 2000, Coach Phillips returned to her alma mater as a varsity assistant. The next year, she continued as a varsity assistant and took over the junior varsity team, leading it to conference championships in 2001 and 2002 and a 20-win season in 2002. In 2003, she moved on to Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, NC where the school was in its third season. As head coach, she worked to establish a competitive program there from 2003-2008 that was highlighted by a 2005 team that won the conference regular season and tournament titles. This team also claimed the district title and finished as the regional runner-up. Coach Phillips compiled a record of 88-44 while at Jay M. Robinson and was awarded the Conference Coach of the Year award in 2005. Several of her players continued their athletic careers in college. The JWU program has made leaps and bounds throughout Coach Phillips's tenure. After finishing 3-23 in its first season, the team increased its win total to win nine matches in 2011. 2012 marked the program's first winning season at 17-10, and the team also qualified for the USCAA National Championships and finished the year with a record of 18-14. 2013 was a breakout season for the Wildcats, who posted wins against some tough teams in the region and registered the athletic department's first 20-win season. These efforts earned the Wildcats another USCAA tournament bid, and the team finished the year with a record of 24-13. A 2011 recipient of the UCB Rheumatoid Arthritis Scholarship, Coach Phillips completed her master's degree in Sports Administration with a concentration in academic advising from Wingate University in 2013. She is currently enrolled in a doctoral program in Kinesiology at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. Coach Phillips's teams at JWU have led the nation in USCAA Volleyball Academic All-American Award recipients for three straight years. She has also had four players receive All-American honors over that span. She serves on various committees at the university and national levels and is the chair of the USCAA Volleyball Committee. Coach Phillips believes in hard work, determination, intelligence on the court, and teamwork. Her team supports these values and is gaining more support on campus and in the community. She completed her high school teaching career as a special education lead teacher for Cabarrus County Schools before joining JWU in a full-time capacity in July 2014. She is a North Carolina native and lives with her spouse in Harrisburg, NC.

Kathryn Thill is currently in her fifth year as Assistant Volleyball Coach at Johnson & Wales University. She came to JWU from High Rock Volleyball Club, where she served as head coach for four years. In 2006, Thill graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College (now Lenoir-Rhyne University), where she started as a middle blocker for four years. She still holds school record for career blocks and ranks in the top five in five other statistical categories. During her time at LenoirRhyne, she was a member of two South Atlantic Conference championship teams and participated in the NCAA D-II tournament in 2004. Thill was named All-SAC in 2005 and 2006. She was honored as the South Atlantic Conference Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and was selected to the ESPN Academic-All-American 2nd Team in 2006.

Marquisha Clayburn is in her second season as an assistant coach for the Wildcats. She comes to JWU from Johnson C. Smith University, where she served as head coach for four years. In 2001, Clayburn graduated from Johnson C. Smith where she played basketball and volleyball. She started as an outside hitter and middle blocker for four years and holds school records in blocks, kills, and service aces. During her time at Johnson C. Smith, Clayburn was named All-CIAA three times.

Thill's chief responsibilities are working with the hitters and blockers and managing the team's fitness and workout plans. She resides in High Point, NC with her husband and two sons.

Clayburn's chief responsibilities are working with the team's defense and coordinating its community outreach efforts. Clayburn currently resides in Charlotte, NC with her family.

Clayburn brings valuable years of volleyball experience as a coach and player. Her positive attitude, along with her motivating spirit, will help the team. She believes in determination, hard work, and teamwork in addition to school and community involvement.
