Head Coach Callie Phillips brings nearly 20 years of playing and 12 years of coaching experience to the John son & Wales volleyball program. She considers it an honor and a privilege to be the head coach at Johnson & Wales, and works hard to maintain a program that reflects the school's values and makes its faculty, staff, and students proud. Coach Phillips played her high school ball at West Davidson High School in Lexington, NC where she earned three all-conference selections her sophomore, junior, and senior seasons and was also named Conference Player of the Year in her final season. She was a part of three thrilling state playoff runs with the Green Drag ons and helped establish a tradition of excellence at West Davidson High School. Due to health concerns, her playing days were cut short, but she continued to be active with various clubs and teams as she completed her college coursework. Upon graduation from Appalachian State University in 2000, Coach Phillips returned to her alma mater as a varsity assistant. The next year, she continued as a varsity assistant and took over the junior varsity team, leading it to conference championships in 2001 and 2002 and a 20-win season in 2002. In 2003, she moved on to Jay M. Robinson High School in Concord, NC where the school was in its third season. As head coach, she worked to establish a competitive program there from 2003-2008 that was highlighted by a 2005 team that won the conference regular season and tournament titles. This team also claimed the district title and finished as the regional runner-up. Coach Phillips compiled a record of 88-44 while at Jay M. Robinson and was awarded the Conference Coach of the Year award in 2005. Several of her players continued their athletic careers in college. The JWU program has made leaps and bounds throughout Coach Phillips's tenure. After finishing 3-23 in its first season, the team increased its win total by 7 to win 10 matches in 2011. Coach Phillips and the team plan for 2012 to be a breakout season for the Wildcats as three strong recruiting classes come together for a formidable squad. In addition to coaching the Wildcats, Coach Phillips serves on the USCAA Coaches Poll Committee and the USCAA All-American Selection Committee. In 2011, five of her players were awarded USCAA Academic All-American honors, leading the country in awards. She is also a member of the Healthy Choices Task Force at Johnson & Wales and works with her team on healthy lifestyles. A 2011 recipient of the UCB Rheumatoid Arthritis Scholarship, Coach Phillips completed her master's degree in Sports Administration with a concentration in academic advising from Wingate University. 2012 saw the Lady Wildcats excel both in the classroom and on the court. Coach Phillips led the team to a 17-10 regular season record, and earned an invitation to the USCAA National Championship, the first postseason birth in school history. The Lady Wildcats would advance out of pool play before losing to eventual national champion Daemen in the quarterfinals. Six Lady Wildcats earned Academic All-American honors, a number that led the country in 2012. Coach Phillips believes in hard work, determination, intelligence on the court, and teamwork. Her team supports these values and is gaining more support on campus and in the community. She currently teaches special education in Cabarrus County Schools and lives with her spouse in Harrisburg, NC.
Kathryn Thill is currently in her 4th year as Assistant Volleyball Coach at Johnson & Wales. She came to JWU from High Rock Volleyball Club, where she served as head coach for 5 years. In 2006 Thill graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College, where she started as Middle Blocker for 4 years. She still holds school record for career blocks, and ranks in the top 5 in five other statistical categories. During her time at Lenoir-Rhyne, she was a member of 2 South Atlantic Conference championship teams and participated in the NCAA D-II tournament in 2004. Thill was named All-SAC in 2005 and 2006. She was honored as the South Atlantic Conference Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year and was selected to the ESPN Academic-All-American 2nd Team in 2006.
Marquisha Clayburn joins the volleyball \coaching staff for the 2013-14 season at Johnson & Wales University. She comes to JWU from Johnson C. Smith University, where she served as Head Coach for 4 years. In 2001, Clayburn graduated from Johnson C. Smith where she played basketball and volleyball. She started as an outside hitter and middle blocker for 4 years, and holds school records in blocks, kills, and service aces. During her time at Johnson C. Smith, Clayburn was named All-CIAA three times. Clayburn brings valuable years of volleyball experience, as a coach and player. Her positive attitude, along with her motivating spirit, will help the team. She believes in determination, hard work, and teamwork, as well as school and community involvement.
