Restaurateur is in the swim of things

A

t age 39, longtime Highwood restaurateur Gabe Viti learned to swim.

Seems like the lessons took — after all, a dozen years after figuring out the freestyle stroke, last month he swam across the English Channel.

“The only challenge was the jellyfish. I got stung 27 times,” says Viti, who walked onto a beach and yelled “Vive la France!” 15 hours and 50 minutes after setting off from Dover, England.

To prepare, Viti swam every day during the summer of 2013 in Lake Michigan, even when waves reached 12 feet. This past winter, he rented a home in St. Petersburg, Fla. two doors away from the Gulf of Mexico. With a cup on a string, his girlfriend fed him from a friend’s boat to mimic the Channel undertaking. He later travelled to San Francisco to get used to the cold water bubbling below Golden Gate Bridge. When he arrived in Dover in July, he was set.

“I was 100 percent confident I had trained enough and that I was ready mentally and physically,” says Viti, whose excursion raised about $80,000 for the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County.

8 | news A daughter speaks of her mother’s military past ■ by simon murray Cyndee Schaffer knew that her mother had enjoyed an interesting past — but her mother, Mollie, didn’t talk about it much.

“I kind of knew that my mother had served in the military,” explains Cyndee, a Northbrook resident.

“When my siblings and I were young, for Halloween my sister and I would wear her Army uniform as a costume. So that’s why we knew she was in the WACs.” The WACs — short for the Women’s Army Corps — was the United States’ answer to the shortage of manpower during World War II. The WACs were given full status on July 1, 1943 after a law was passed that granted them the same benefits as their male counterparts. That September, Mollie enlisted.

Cyndee — who looks nearly identical to her mother — is leading a one-woman army, dedicating her time to present her epistolary nonfiction book, “Mollie’s War” (published by McFarland) to senior centers, senior living facilities, and women’s clubs. A collection of about 350 letters, the book charts Mollie’s journey from Detroit to basic training in Daytona Beach, Fla. and landing on Normandy Beach weeks after the initial invasion.

Mollie’s sister Rebecca saved every last letter. But what Cyndee did was build in the context.

“In her letters, because of censorship, she really couldn’t say, ‘I’m right here in the Battle of the Bulge.’ “notes Cyndee. “I had to put the history around it.”

In writing the book together, Mollie opened up to her daughter like never before, breathing life into the stories scattered throughout the

letters she sent home to her anxious family in Detroit. Suddenly, Cyndee was finding out in detail her mother’s work with medical intelligence, past boyfriends, and her work as an extra in the recruiting film: “It’s Your War, Too.” “You didn’t know you had a movie star for a sister, did you?” Mollie wrote to Rebecca on Dec. 17, 1943 while stationed in Wilmington, Calif.

Mollie had always wanted to write her own book, which is why Cyndee — a high school math teacher and technical writer for computer systems — set out to honor her mother’s wish to see it published.

Mollie passed away in April 2012, two years after the book was published. She got her wish.

And her life’s story lives on. Cyndee will become an Illinois Humanities Council’s Road Scholars speaker starting Nov. 1. The IHC Road Scholars program enables non-profit organizations in Illinois to host presentations on humanities subjects, and through this sponsorship Cyndee will be continuing her presentations on her mother’s life around the state.

“When Cyndee auditioned to join the Road Scholars roster, we were very impressed with the thoroughness of her research and with her meticulously organized presentation,” says IHC Program Officer Matt Meacham.

At one of her most recent presentations, speaking to a group in Winston Towers in Rodgers Park, Cyndee told the story of when Mollie, a Jewish American, attended the Jewish New Year at the only standing synagogue following the war in Frankfurt, Germany — when a man raised his hand. He said he was a Holocaust survivor. He had been at that synagogue for that service, and had wondered why there were so many WACs there. ■

A line of severe storms knocked out power to nearly 5,000 homes on Sept. 5.

The west side of town was hit hardest, with several trees down in The Willows subdivision. Public Works and contracted crews went through town to pick up limbs and debris from parkways.

According to the Public Works Department, crews responded to 46 tree-related calls, 12 calls about trees blocking roadways, and four calls about street flooding.

DEERFIELD

The Deerfield Chamber of Commerce is warning businesses of a phone scam, wherein someone claims to be from ComEd and tells the business owner they need to make an immediate payment or their service will be disconnected.

ComEd is reminding customers that representatives from ComEd never ask customers for prepaid credit cards or personal financial information.

The Village of Northbrook has preparations in place for it’s most expensive flood-control project to date: an $8.9 million tank that will be buried under Wescott Park.

The tank or vault could hold about 7.5 million gallons of water.

As part of the Stormwater Master Plan, the Village is looking into ways to limit the impact of flooding to residents in the area. The vault project has been on the Village’s drawing board since 2011, with a recent $50,000 study performed by Baxter & Woodman Consulting Engineers, Crystal Lake. On Sept. 9, Northbrook trustees unanimously awarded the same firm a contract of $786,000 to design and build the tank.

The Village Board of Trustees has delayed voting for a proposed medical cannabis dispensary consideration until the Oct. 7 board meeting.

Initially, an application for the conditional use for medical cannabis at Greenleaf Organics on 3240 West Lake Avenue was going to be considered at a board meeting on Sept. 16. The owners are requesting a final site plan review of the proposed 2,300-square-foot tenant space.

Ella Palzet, a 6th grader in Deerfield, will be running in the Chicago Women’s Half Marathon on Sept. 27 to raise awareness for her cousin Nora, who was born 14 weeks premature at NorthShore Evanston Hospital.

“I’m looking forward to running for Nora and one day crossing the finish line with her,” noted Ella.

Time for a renovation?

The removal of wildlife might soon become cheaper for residents.

Northbrook officials have confirmed they are looking to partner with a wildlife trapping company to provide discounts to residents to have skunks, raccoons, and other larger animals, including squirrels, trapped and removed.

According to the Chicago Tribune, Northbrook’s animal control officer, Gina Manski, was receiving a record number of calls about skunks in 2012, approaching 30 calls per day.

Those calls have been on the decline, especially this season, but experts caution that the skunk population along the North Shore has been steadily growing over the years.

Gubernatorial tax stances have North Shore impact

■ by simon murray In 2009, at the time of his predecessor Rod Blagojevich’s impeachment, Patrick Quinn — the lieutenant-governor-turnedgovernor — described Blagojevich’s fiscal plan as someone “who ate it up at dinner and ran up the bill, and then it’s time to pay the bill, and they’ve left the building.”

Quinn’s 67 percent personal income tax hike in 2011 — the biggest increase any state has adopted since the economic downturn, one passed in the final minutes of a lame-duck legislature — has helped narrow the state’s gaping fiscal hole. But Illinois still faces more than a $4 billion backlog in unpaid bills and a pension crisis, among other fiscal woes.

The tax hike to 5 percent from 3 percent was scheduled to be rolled back to 3.75 percent next year — until Quinn said in March that it would become permanent to pay for, among other budgetary plans, better education, college scholarships, and an increase in the minimum wage.

Cue the gubernatorial election that is looming in November. Quinn, a Democrat who was narrowly elected to a full first term in 2010, will face businessman Bruce Rauner, a Republican from Winnetka.

Rauner told the Chicago Tribune that, if elected, he will roll the personal income tax rate back from 5 percent back to 3 percent within four years. The changes he envisions would have Springfield bringing in roughly $600 million a year by broadening the tax base to include 32 sectors. Rauner also proposes freezing property taxes. (Phone calls made to his office to ask questions about his stance were not returned.)

For the hundreds of thousands of North Shore residents, the difference in those tax rates adds up to tens of millions of dollars.

In Kenilworth, for instance — where the median household income is about $250,000 a year — a 5 percent rate on that income is $12,500; a 3 percent rate is $7,500, or $5,000 less.

That same 2011 tax change raised the rate on businesses to 7 percent from 4.8 percent (it is slated to drop to 5.25 percent in 2015). Some firms in the North Shore are hoping it fades away as originally promised — but are not optimistic.

“We all should have known when this tax was pitched to us as a short-term budget fix by Quinn that it would morph into a permanent increase,” says Scott Lackie, president of Griffith Grant & Lackie Realtors. “Springfield is a dysfunctional nightmare that will only be fixed when we change the management of state government from top to bottom.”

Jay Shlifka, owner of Kiddles Sports in Market Square, disagrees.

“Yes, no one ever likes to write a check. But you’ve got to look at the big picture. You’ve got to look at our social issues,” he says.

“If the funds are not spent in a corrupt manner but in a positive manner, then I think I’m going to be on board with it and will pay my dues.”

State Sen. Julie Morrison, a Democrat whose 29th District encompasses many North Shore towns (such as Highland Park and Deerfield), has said she does not agree with Quinn’s permanent tax proposal and instead wants “to look at smart cuts and reasonable ways to raise revenue.

“Illinois does have a serious financial problem, and the situation will not change based upon who sits in the governor’s office unless we do something,” cautions Morrison. ■

Bank, high school get together for art’s sake ■ by simon murray When Julia Yenakiy signed up for the Foundations of Art class at Deerfield High School, her only other foray into the elective arts had been a fashion and design class earlier in her high school career. So becoming a professional painter in under a year seemed a little farfetched.

But Yenakiy was one of a group of students who were given a taste of the life of a commissioned artist when their artwork was purchased and hung up in the Lakes Office Plaza in Bannockburn.

“I had no idea it was going to be sold, so it was kind of a shock to me that someone would want to buy my piece in the first place,” says Yenakiy, 17 years old. “To hear that someone liked my piece and wanted to purchase it — it was amazing.”

Last January, Jami Bartolucci was exploring the area around the Lakes Office Plaza.

Her company, Wells Fargo, had just acquired the property —three office buildings — after the foreclosure on a commercial loan. A bundled up Bartolucci, vice president and asset manager of Wells Fargo’s real estate division many miles away from her corporate office in Charlotte, N.C. was doing her regular rounds, trying to get a feel for the surrounding area covered in snow, when she noticed the Deerfield High School close by.

The bare walls of her newly acquired office lobby were in need of some color and energy. Might the art department have some prints for sale?

When she got back to Charlotte, she petitioned her idea in front of her managers.

Though something like this had never been done before, “it walks our talk of partnering

with our communities, and it also invests in kids and education which is something Wells Fargo is very supportive of,” says Bartolucci.

Everyone was on board. After a search, Bartolucci got in touch with Sue Johnson, the fine art department chair at Deerfield High School and presented her idea.

Johnson put her in touch with the art teachers, Katherine O’Truk and Christopher Sykora, who were teaching beginning art classes. Their curriculum’s first project just so happened to coincide with Bartolucci’s original idea (and a staple of office buildings everywhere): large, abstract, contemporary paintings.

“So I told her I might have some things for you,” says Sykora. “Our students do this project every year; would you like to take a look at it?”

Before long, Bartolucci had purchased 12 of the original expressive prints, with each of the student artists making $75 apiece. (Only one student declined to sell her painting.) But the office building was expansive, so Bartolucci commissioned students to work on 12 more, this time on larger canvases of 3 by 5 feet. Wells Fargo supplied the materials including the canvases and “all the paints we would need,” says Sykora, as well as offering each of the students that worked on it a stipend for their efforts. Sykora then split the 40 students in his Foundations class into groups of three — and set them to work.

Before, they were given free reign to tout their artistic expressions, but this time they were asked to create something specific. Bartolucci was telling them what she wanted through progress reports sent by the teachers. Some students nailed it. Others,

including even the experienced artists, were posed with the challenge of getting their piece exactly right.

Yenakiy, who says she likes working with colors and acrylic paint as her medium, says her group started over multiple times.

“It was more challenging working with a group than by yourself. Two other people offer their own ideas and creative

differences,” she notes.

Over time, and through collaboration with each other and the client, the pieces started to come together.

“They got to have a really great professional experience,” explains Sykora. “And of course the end result was having their work hung up in a public property. It was an awesome learning experience.” ■

Because of work commitments, Reena and Harit Talwar have lived in four countries and on three continents. With such a busy life, the Lake Forest couple has always made sure to carve out family vacations with their three children — Vidush (25), Eeshan (21) and Saisha (17). Each parent also bonds with one child on a separate vacation.

Says Harit, “Both are necessary to keep our sanity — and to keep our value system intact.”

This year, the entire family gathered in Maui.

“It was absolutely fantastic snorkeling and surfing,” Harit says. “We’re all great at snorkeling — and horrible at surfing.”

Coincidentally, the trip overlapped with the World Cup. Everyone would wake up at 6 a.m. in the Hawaii condominium to watch the games together. After hiking on the beach, they’d watch the next game by the pool.

Soon after that excursion, Reena and Eeshan traveled to the Grand Canyon. They backpacked to the bottom — signing up for the most rigorous hike available — before camping out.

“He was so sweet — he’d wait for me if I lagged behind,” Reena says. “It turned out to be the most amazing trip — very different from Maui, no doubt about that.” ■

■ by joanna brown A wise friend once told me, with a chuckle, that golf was invented so that men could better avoid talking to each other. (Of course, he’s a hunter, where total silence is required.)

But I thought of my friend and chuckled, too, when a local golf pro suggested my husband and I might enjoy taking a lesson together.

Explained Michael Wenzel, a PGAcertified teaching professional and director of instruction at Sportsman’s Country Club in Northbrook, “It helps to bring couples together with their games so that each has

a better idea of what the other should be working on. You’re less likely to have one spouse teaching the other their bad habits when they do this. When couples play, typically the husband tries to act as the coach on the course.”

Wenzel and I were both familiar with that scenario. It didn’t surprise me to hear that he taught his own wife the basics of the game he loves — and that she doesn’t always appreciate his continued coaching.

“I don’t like to see her struggle, ever, but I’ve learned to wait until she asks me for help with her swing,” he said.

Should couples take a swing at golf together?

First Tee of Greater Chicago, one chapter of a national organization formed to positively impact children through golf.

During lessons, the sport is woven with character-building activities. These life skills include self-management, goal setting, honesty, integrity, sportsmanship, and more.

And doesn’t everybody want those traits present in their marriage? Australian author and teacher Ray Jamieson made that question a topic in his 2013 TED Conversation at www.ted.com. Jamieson wrote that the most important things in a relationship, from his experience, are honesty, listening, and time spent together. His audience added trust, acceptance,

confidentiality, communication, respect, compromise and divine intervention.

So is the golf course a good place to work on your marriage, to encourage the character traits that the TED community suggested are so necessary for a healthy relationship? I’m not sure — I haven’t scheduled our lesson with Wenzel yet. But I’m fairly confident that most every golfer has begged for divine intervention in a good number of putts, and I’m keeping Wenzel’s business card in my top desk drawer.

Together, Poulton and partner Sharon A. Harvey, a licensed interior designer, provide comprehensive home services and help clients frame a master plan to create legacy homes, from modest bungalows to top-tier estates.

Having renovated historic landmarks by David Adler, Howard Van Doren Shaw, and Harrie T. Lindenberg, their styles range from modern aesthetic to traditional classic.

The kitchen has been modeled to look like an old farmhouse kitchen — but with modern details and amenities. White oak timbers and walls paneled to look like the exterior siding creates an “indoor-outdoor feel,” says Poulton. The colors and textures were chosen to carefully blend the two; from the stone exterior carried into the interior wall cladding in the garden room to the great oak brushed barn board flooring in the back entry. The soft grays and blues create a lovely flow.

“I always suggest our clients have a mission statement for their project with some criteria to help them make selections during the design process,” notes Harvey of the style, evinced by “a classic American country house with details and material indicative of a New England gentleman’s farmhouse that you might find in the countryside of eastern Pennsylvania in the 1800s to early 1900s.”

Though the firm has done many historic preservation projects, they combine contemporary work into many if not all projects.

Whether modern or historic, they often use natural materials in the design process.

“Once we partner with our clients, we partner with them for the duration of their residency,” explains Harvey. “And in many cases, our clients children and other family members come to us later. I call these two-peats and three-peats. We recently had a fourpeat!” ■

Deerfield’s Krugman fulfilling promise as team’s new leader

sports@northshoreweekend.com Anybody in Jacob Krugman’s golf shoes would have done what the Deerfield High School junior did during a round of golf at Royal Melbourne Country Club in Long Grove this past summer.

He stopped keeping track of his strokes, so he could focus on somebody else’s round.

“I just watched Ian,” Krugman says of his playing partner that day, 2012 Class 3A state champion Ian Kelsey.

Kelsey (Deerfield High School, ’14), now a freshman at Dartmouth, ended up shooting a course-record-tying 66 after a marvelous — and scalding — eagle-birdie-birdiebirdie-birdie start.

“I played with him a lot in the summer,” adds Krugman, Deerfield’s top golfer who carded a 75 to pace the Warriors’ fifth-place effort (314) at the Wheeling Invite at Chevy Chase Country Club on Sept. 20.

“It was helpful,” he adds. “Just watching Ian practice, the way he handles himself on golf courses … it’s all helpful.”

People are watching Krugman these days, and with good reason: The Warrior’s consistency has made him a worthy successor of Kelsey, a year after he shot 83-84 (No. 3 among Warriors) for Deerfield’s 10th-place team at state (Kelsey took seventh among 112 qualifiers with a team-best 75-72). Krugman tied for sixth place (73) at the Bloomington Invite in August and matched that showing with another 73 at the Deerfield Invite at Twin Orchard Country Club on Sept. 6.

“Jacob has grown as a golfer, matured as a competitor,” Deerfield coach Jeff Fishbein says of the third-year varsity member. “He’s playing really smart golf, with great skills.

His touch around the greens is fabulous, and he’s gained some really nice length off the tee.

“Put those together,” he adds, “and you get a fantastic golfer.”

Krugman made Deerfield’s varsity as a freshman, with more than clubs helping him compete against the big boys of the prep scene as the squad’s No. 5 or No. 6 golfer.

“He was fearless,” Fishbein recalls. “He’d go up for his tee shots and play confident golf. Sure he struggled at times, as all freshmen do. But he usually bounced back and was an important player for us that year.

“This year I’ve noticed how well he’s taking things in stride. His reaction to bad shots has improved drastically.”

Though he birdied only one hole at last weekend’s Wheeling Invite, Krugman struck the ball solidly. He pointed out afterward, following a quick lunch, that it marked his best day of striking a dimpled sphere this fall.

“His putting, his short game, his irons,” Warriors senior Eric Bagg says of Krugman’s top three strengths. “He’s our No. 1 now because of his consistency.

“In practices,” he adds, “Jacob finds ways to make them productive for his game.”

Krugman’s father, Bob, makes sure his son gets fed healthy doses of perspective every now and then.

“My dad,” Krugman says, “reminds me to stay positive, to have fun … that’s all that matters. He also likes to tell me, ‘Remember, golf is only a game.’ ” Blessed with a seriously good golf game, Krugman — a loyal fan of “The Simpsons” — also owns a sneaky, mischievous sense of humor off the links.

“He comes off as quiet at first if you don’t know him,” says Bagg, who first met Krugman on the second day of varsity tryouts two years ago. “But then you’ll realize he’s

got a real weird, fun kind of humor. He’s a good teammate … entertaining; we all enjoy being around him.”

Fishbein also appreciates the two wonderful sides of his top golfer.

“He’s a great kid from a great family,” the coach says. “In practice he puts forth a great effort, shows model behavior — behavior you want to see in others.

“But,” he adds, “Jacob also is just a goofy, dry, fun kid.”

The kid’s take on his season, as it marches along the back nine: “So far, so good,” Krugman says. “Playing steady, hitting a lot of greens, trying to find ways to make par with birdies here and there.”

Notable: Junior Sam Gascoigne emerged as Deerfield’s No. 2 golfer at the Wheeling Invite, shooting a 78. Senior Jack Dickman (80) and Bagg (81) were 3-4. The Warriors’ No. 5 scorer, senior Wiley Shapiro (88), toured the back nine in 40.

Glenbrook North: The Spartans placed sixth (315) at the Wheeling Invite on Sept. 20 behind Luke Oberholtzer’s round of 77. Sam Nyren and Charlie Van Cleeve shot 79s.

Tyler Mulier (80) and Quinn McCarthy (83) also toured the par-72 course for Glenbrook North.

Loyola Academy’s Ramblers (300) edged Barrington’s Broncos (300) on a fifth-man tiebreaker. LA freshman Bennett Cotten fired a medalist round of 70.

In other recent action, GBN topped Highland Park 147152 on Sept. 16 behind Van Cleeve (35), Oberholtzer (37) and Mulier (37). And the Spartans scored a 150 in a win over Niles North (208) on Sept. 17. Van Cleeve (35) led the way. ■

sports@northshoreweekend.com During the introduction of players before a recent home volleyball match, Glenbrook South senior setter Shannon Carroll took a quick step to her left and acknowledged fans in the bleachers with a shy, subtle Queen-of-England cupped wave near her left ear.

The simultaneous moves lasted one second.

Maybe.

But Carroll’s acts on the same court afterward were indelible ones — and far from understated. A 2013 allCentral Suburban League South pick and Northwesternbased Wildcat Juniors club member, the 5-foot-10 Titan popped for jump sets, smacked aces, hustled for digs and sprung for blocks in Glenbrook South’s 25-21, 19-25, 25-14 defeat of Maine South on Sept. 18.

“She’s got everything,” Titans senior right-side hitter Emmi Carr said of Carroll’s skill set. “Her sets are more accurate, her defense has improved, her blocking has improved … her attacking — she should do more of that.

“Great player, great attitude,” Carr added.

Superb track athlete, too. Carroll owns the school records in the 100-meter hurdles (15.95) and 300 low hurdles (49.24). She sped to runner-up and fifth place in the events, respectively, at the CSL South outdoor track and field meet last spring.

“Shannon,” South volleyball coach Katie Hoover said, “uses her athleticism to her advantage on offense and defense. This year she is more offensive as a setter; we’re very pleased about that.

“We also like how she’s always focused, always ready to go when the whistle blows. Shannon sets a great tone for us in practices and matches.”

The sister of former Glenbrook South baseball standout Cody Carroll (now a freshman baseball player at Bradley University) worked extensively in the offseason on a part of her volleyball game that resonates with position players in baseball.

“I wanted quicker hands,” said Carroll, averaging 9.2 assists per set (up from 7.1 last fall) for the 15-6, 2-0 Titans, who placed 16th at the highly competitive, 24-team Wheaton Classic Invitational at Wheaton Warrenville South on Sept. 20.

A volleyball assistant coach wanted to give Carroll a nickname years ago, and he came up with a doozy: “Shann-animal.”

The fitting moniker reflects Carroll’s voracious ways as

a competitor.

“She’s crazy when she competes, goes for everything,” Carr praised. “She kind of scared me when we first met [as club volleyball teammates in the sixth grade]. But she warmed up. She’s funny, sarcastic.

“We’re besties.”

Carroll is looking at Midwest colleges, with an eye on continuing her volleyball career at the next level. Through the match with Maine South last week, she had accumulated 351 assists, 80 digs, 29 kills and 15 aces.

“It’s always been a fun sport, because you’re basically always moving in it except for the time [between sets].”

Carroll said. “And it’s exciting being on a team like the one I’m on now.

“We all rely on each other.”

When she’s away from volleyball nets, Carroll likes to view Netflix flicks. One of her favorite all-time movies is “The Blind Side,” starring Sandra Bullock and a young actor, Jae Head, who made her laugh often.

What’s usually missing in action, from the other side of the net, during Glenbrook South’s matches: laughter.

There’s usually a 5-foot-10 reason for that.

“Shannon hustles to every ball, and she’s focused on making smart and aggressive plays every time she touches the ball,” Hoover said. “Mistakes don’t faze her. She’s such a strong competitor. … She took great steps in the offseason, getting physically stronger and faster by spending a lot of time in the weight room.

“And,” the coach added, “she is always mentally preparing herself.”

Carroll and Wojick struck two aces apiece. Wojslaw contributed team highs of 10 kills and five blocks in a match that was delayed by about an hour because of a Maine South bus issue. As a lifelong fan of baseball, David Hochstadt of Highland Park noticed fewer players of Hispanic origin taking the field on game days.

When it came time to chose a service project while preparing for his bar mitzvah in eighth grade, he decided to see if any fourth- or fifthgrade students from Oak Terrace Elementary School in Highwood would be interested in baseball lessons.

Hochstadt had a solid grasp on Spanish, and the first lessons he gave were mostly in Spanish. Even after his bar mitzvah project was over, Hochstadt continued giving baseball lessons to younger ballplayers in his spare time.

GBN turns tide, tops GBS swimmers ■ by patrick z. mcgavin

sports@northshoreweekend.com Swimming is a marvel of discipline and resolve. Desire and redemption are also part of the mix. Nothing is more difficult or frustrating than always trying to catch up to somebody that no matter how hard you work remains a length or two ahead.

In the battle waged between Glenbrook North and Glenbrook South, the Spartans have trailed of late trying to measure up to their top rivals. Two years ago, Glenbrook South finished just out of the trophy race with a top-4 place at the state meet.

Glenbrook North was well back, finishing in 23rd that year.

Last year was more of the same. Glenbrook South dipped somewhat, dropping to 11th place. By contrast, the Spartans finished in 38th.

Fueled by excellent crop of young swimmers and improvement from its returning performers, Glenbrook North has parlayed the depth and skill into a banner year so far.

Glenbrook North took out that recent frustration against

the Titans on Sept. 19, winning eight of the 12 events for a 109-77 victory.

“That was a lot of fun for our girls and a long time coming,” Glenbrook North coach Robin Walker said. “We’ve taken a backseat to [Glenbrook South] for a long time because they’ve had some really strong teams. It was definitely a measuring stick for us, in a dual meet in order to go toe-to-toe with them and come out ahead.”

The Spartans sustained the momentum into Saturday afternoon, where they performed admirably at their own GBN Sprint Classic by finishing meet runner-up to Libertyville.

The team’s top swimmers, seniors Colleen Doolan, Abigail Rosenberg and junior Erin Oliphant, powered the victory.

Oliphant outdueled freshman teammate Tiffany Qiao to capture the 200-yard individual medley, edging the precocious Qiao 2:11.57-2:12.81. Taking advantage of Titans star swimmer Katie Wells not swimming at her strongest event, the 100 breastroke, Oliphant breezed to the victory there.

“She was battling some breathing issues for the last year and a half, but she had corrective surgery over the summer and now she’s getting herself back in shape,” Walker noted.

“She has always proven to be one of the top swimmers

in the state.”

The dominant narrative of the Spartans’ fast start has been the emergence of Doolan as an elite, state-caliber swimmer. In the dual meet Doolan won two individual races, the 100 and 200 freestyle and anchored the winning 200 freestyle relay. She destroyed the field in the 200 freestyle with a quick-silver 1:55.15, more than three and a half seconds ahead of the second-place finisher.

Doolan capped her strong weekend by winning the 100 yard fly at the GBN Sprint Classic.

“She is a great worker,” Walker said. “Last year we probably didn’t get the best from her at the state meet because she was sick, after she swam very fast times in the conference finals and sectionals. People are not as aware of her because of that, and they are sometimes wondering who she is.

“We had Colleen the whole time, and she has been moving in this direction since her freshman year,” he said.

Rosenberg swam a leg on the 200 medley relay and finished second to Wells in the 50 and 100 free. She saved her best for the weekend. She won the 50 free with a blistering 24.64.

“She is a captain, and she has proven herself to be one of the top swimmers in the state,” Walker said. ■

Titans' MacDonald tosses accolades to Spartans ■ by patrick z. mcgavin

sports@northshoreweekend.com Keith MacDonald has been coaching long enough to know to temper expectations. The Glenbrook South girls swimming coach has directed a perennial program to very lofty heights, including a top four state finish in 2012 and an 11th place finish last year.

Every new year creates its own set of challenges and difficulties. Right now, the Titans are trying to find their way, according to their coach. In a showdown against rival Glenbrook North on Sept. 19, the Spartans took most of the glory, winning eight of the 12 events to easily outdistance the Titans 109-77.

“I’ve been coaching at Glenbrook South for 10 years, and this might be the best [Glenbrook North] team I’ve ever seen,” MacDonald said.

On Saturday, the Titans finished fifth out of nine teams in the GBN Sprint Classic.

Senior Katie Wells, the team’s star swimmer, was the bright spot over the weekend. Wells finished fourth in the 50-yard free (23.26) and fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.96) last year to power the Titans at the state championship. She

also swam legs on the 200 medley relay that finished eighth and anchored the 200 free relay to fourth place.

Wells is one of the state’s favorites in 50 free and 100 back. She is also experimenting with the possibility of swimming in the 100 free.

“She’s one of the best swimmers in the state,” MacDonald said. “She’s a great competitor who doesn’t like to lose.”

Wells swept the short sprints in the dual meet at GBN, capturing the 50 free in 24.17 and following up with a very fast 52.60 in the 100.

She was also the Titans’ only winner at the GBN Sprint Classic, which fills out its program with some unorthodox distances, such as the 25 yard breaststroke that Wells won in addition to the 100 breaststroke.

“Right now, we just don’t have the depth to compete with the really good programs, like Fremd and Glenbrook North,” MacDonald said.

Senior Kelly Cordes was the team’s other bright spot.

Using the dual meet structure to experiment with different races, Cordes produced a best time of the season (5:28.18) in winning by more than three seconds over runner-up Caroline Vogel of Glenbrook North.

“With the dual meets, I just want to improve my times,”

Cordes said. “My main events are the 100 and 200 freestyle, and my style, or strategy, is usually just going out there and see what happens, and hopefully come up with a season-best.”

Cordes joins senior Diana Capota and junior Connie Chrones as the core returning group from last year’s team.

Cordes, Capota and Wells formed three-fourths of the 200 freestyle relay team. Among the emerging group, MacDonald has been impressed with the performance of sophomore Eliz Akgun.

“We’re a little disappointed [in the results],” Cordes said.

“Overall there were some ups and downs with the team.

Against [Glenbrook North] we wanted to either be closer or even win that meet. This is a different team from last year.

“We lost some seniors, and Glenbrook North has a good bunch of freshmen,” she said.

Still, the season is long and the team is bound and determined to improve, individually and collectively through participation in dual meets and top invitationals.

“We’re not swimming our best right now, but that’s okay; you don’t want your best times at this point of the season,” MacDonald said. “We’re trying to peak at the end of the year.” ■

Schermerhorn makes the most of his opportunity ■ by t.j. brown

Just down Shermer Road, Glenbrook North had its own version of “Shermerfest” in its 53-24 loss to Niles West on Sept. 19.

Junior Mitch Schermerhorn caught three passes, including one for a touchdown as a flanker in the first half. In the second half, Schermerhorn was the feature back in the Spartans offense, rushing the ball 18 times for 91 yards and scoring a touchdown.

He also played defense, including quite a bit at corner, making 4.5 tackles as GBN (1-2) struggled to hold a potent Wolves offense in check.

Injuries to starting tailback John Clark and cornerback Brice Call pressed Schermerhorn into extended action.

“He’d play line if we let him,” GBN coach Bob Pieper said of the 5-foot-8, 160-pound Schermerhorn. “He’s the type of kid that will play any position to get onto the field.”

Now that he’s on the field, it might be tough to get him off. In the first half, he served as a third or fourth receiver, catching three passes for 27 yards and a touchdown while feature receiver David Burnside and Call drew the coverage.

It was immediately after Call hauled in a 42-yard pass from Danny Ahern on a post pattern to set up a first-and-goal from the Niles West 5, that Schermerhorn caught his first varsity touchdown pass as Ahern connected on a swing pass.

“Danny saw we had a mismatch out there,” Schermerhorn explained. “The two receivers

(Burnside and senior Matt Tedeschi) blocked the heck out of those guys, and I took it in for the score. It was awesome.”

When Clark came out as a precaution due to a shot to the head, Schermerhorn came in and spearheaded two drives that pulled the Spartans within striking range, including a 5-yard run to cap off a drive to open the half and pull GBN within 8. It was right after that score that Niles West returned the kickoff 76 yards to the GBN 5. Call made the touchdown-saving tackle, but had to come out of the game with leg cramps.

Schermerhorn saw more action.

“I’ll do whatever they ask, any way I can play,” Schermerhorn said. “I get reps in practice everywhere, so if a game-time situation happens, I’m ready for it.”

Northbrook was known as “Shermerville” until 1923 in homage to 19th Century settler Frederick Schermer (whose name contains a c, just like Schermerhorn). Movie director and GBN alum John Hughes revived the Shermerville moniker in a few of his 1980s classics that he set in the North Shore, such as Sixteen Candles and The Breakfast Club.

Mitch Schermerhorn pronounced his name with a hard c, but he too can trace his namesake to a town.

“Schermerhorn’s Dutch,” he said. “It’s actually the name of a town in the Netherlands.”

Notable: In addition to Schermerhorn, Ahern had a productive day, completing 21-of-31 passes for 248 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for a touchdown in the second half. His favorite target was Burnside (10 catches, 85 yards) followed by Call (five catches, 86 yards). ■

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean Chip Shots Boys Golf Deerfield Invite: Jacob Krugman and Eric Bagg led the charge as the Warriors shot a 300 to place third behind New Trier (291) and Barrington (192) in a tough 12-team field at Twin Grove C.C. on Sept. 6. Krugman shot a 73 to share sixth place, while Bagg recorded a 74 to put him in a tie for 10th. Teammate Sam Gascoigne came in 21st (76), while Jack Dickman finished in a tie for 28th (77).

Glenbrook North ended up just one stroke in back of Deerfield. Matt Kull led the team with a 73 (tied for 6th). Daniel Cole and Tyler Mulier shot 75s to share 17th place.

Freshman Bennett Cotten carded a 72 (fifth place) to lead Loyola (7th, 308).

Glenbrook South: Kevin Paek tore it up in the Titans’ 149-160 dual-meet victory Niles West on Sept.

2. Paek won the meet by three strokes with 1 under 34 at Willow Hill. Charlie Nikitas shot a 37, while Nick Campobasso and Robert Hopkins had 39s.

On Sept. 3, Nikitas (39) was the medalist in GBS’s 161-174 win over Notre Dame at Mission Hills. Paek (40), Jarrett Prchal (41) and Jack Grier (41) were the other scorers.

Girls Golf Deerfield: Lauren Kelsey of the Warriors shared runner-up honors (41) with Libertyville’s Jessica Lovinger in her team’s 165-175 setback on Sept.

4. Elyse Emerzian and Maya Marks shot 44s for Deerfield, while teammate Kelly Storti had a 46.

Glenbrook South: Sophomore Hannah Buchband, junior Arina Kim and freshman Sophia Lau have been putting up solid scores for the Titans.

Buchband shot a 5 over 41 in a 172-179 loss to Hersey on Sept. 4. Kim and Lau came up with 45s in a 189-191 loss to Vernon Hills on Sept. 2.

At the Net Girls Volleyball New Trier Tournament: Glenbrook South proved to be one of the elite teams at this invite (Sept. 6-7). The Titans (10-2) went 3-0 in pool play and wound up beating Zion-Benton 23-25, 25-18, 25-19 for third place behind strong play by Zimmi Frerichs (11 kills), Sarah Wojick (7 kills), Sarah Prenner (10 digs) and Shannon Carroll (27 assists) The Titans missed a chance to advance to the finals, when they lost in three sets to eventual champ Huntley. Sylvia Wojslaw had nine kills, while Catie Weinman added seven kills. Prenner and Shannon Carroll had seven digs apiece. Carroll also finished with 26 assists.

In pool play, GBS handed Loyola its first loss of the season 9-25, 25-20, 15-3.

Loyola, meanwhile, went on to defeat the host Trevians 25-18, 25-20 to finish in fifth place. The Ramblers (7-1), who went 2-1 in pool play, opened bracket play by topping Niles West in three sets.

Junior Christina Reed led the team with 24 kills.

New Trier, which also went 2-1 in pool play, advanced to the fifth-place match by downing Glenbrook North 25-17, 25-23.

Poolside Girls Swimming Deerfield/Glenbrook South: Katie Wells, Connie Chrones and Kelly Cordes led the way as the GBS earned a 105-81 victory over the Warriors on Sept. 5. Wells took first place in the 100 fly (58.34) and 100 back (59.59) while anchoring the winning 200 medley relay (1:51.42). Chrones took first in the 50 free (25.35) and 100 free (55.64). Cordes came up with victories in the 200 free (2:00.57) and 500 free (5:27.48).

Chrone and Cordes also were on the winning 200 free relay (1:42.93).

GBS’s other victors were Diana Capota in the 200 IM (2:16.96), Connie Chrones in the 100 free (55.64) and Eliz Akgun in the 100 breast (1:13.24).

Deerfield claimed two wins in the meet. Sabrina Linton won diving (186.45), while the foursome of Ana Tsakiris, Lily Kurzydlo, Ruby Powell and Lauren Kurzydlo teamed up to take first in the 400 relay (3:46.88).

Footnotes Boys Soccer Deerfield: The Warriors picked up wins over Vernon Hills 3-1 on Sept. 2 and Stevenson 1-0 on Sept. 4 before playing Highland Park to a 0-0 tie on Sept. 6.

Ari Patterson, Charlie Kogan and Matt Grady tallied goals against Vernon Hills. Steve Shore scored the lone goal in the Stevenson contest, while A.J. Schmidt posted a shutout. The defense also featured Grady, Michael Such, Will Schmetterer and Josh Pollack.

Glenbrook North: The Spartans finished 1-2 in the recent Quincy Tournament. Their lone win came against LaDue, Mo., 3-1 on goals by Ethan Glass, Adam Melnick and Jackson Grabill.

Patrick Pekala had two goals in the team’s 4-3 win over Foreman.

Glenbrook South: Perry Adamopoulos finished with eight saves in GBS’s 1-0 setback to Libertyville on Sept. 4. His night also included a penalty kick save.

In earlier action this fall, the Titans opened play in their own tourney with a 6-0 victory over Loyola Academy. Daniel Bernstein had two goals.

34 | sunday breakfast His television shows Baer watching WTTW host knows almost every inch of Chicago — a city about as big as a Dutch Baby pancake.

■ by david sweet When away from his desk at WTTW in the 1990s, Geoffrey Baer served as a docent for the Chicago Architecture Foundation, presenting architectural history tours on the river. Oftentimes, once the excursion ended, people would come up and ask questions.

One day, a tall man engaged him. He asked questions — one after another.

“I had to go,” Baer recalls at a table in his favorite spot — Walker Bros. The Original Pancake House in Wilmette, where he prefers the plate-filling Dutch Baby pancake. “I walked away, and he followed me, pummeling me with more questions.”

Finally, the man’s wife said to her husband, “Do you want to tell him who you are?’ “ It was John McCarter, chairman of WTTW. The next day, he called a producer and suggested that Baer be assigned a show based on his cruises along the river.

“As the audience attention span gets shorter, a minute-long standup now would seem almost interminable to the viewer.” | Geoffrey Baer Up until that time, Baer — who had worked at ABC and NBC affiliates — always served as a television producer, never an on-air talent.

Since his “Chicago by Boat” show debuted in 1995, his face has been everywhere on Channel 11 — from “Chicago’s Loop: a New Walking Tour” to “Biking the Boulevards,” among many others.

The shows have garnered more than $6 million in funding from corporations, foundations, and viewers — and are consistently among the most watched programs in WTTW’s schedule.

That success is especially astounding when one considers Baer’s first show. After travelling on a white boat during a blindingly sunny day, with a television light flashing in his face for hours, he awakened in the middle of the night — and couldn’t open his eyes.

“It was excruciating pain,” he recalls. “I went into the hospital, and the nurse said, ‘We see this all the time. A stalwart during plays at Deerfield High School (he cites drama teacher Irene Kramsky as a major influence) and armed with a masters in theater from Northwestern University, “performing has never been a foreign thing to me,”

says the 58-year-old, who even trained at Second City at one point.

Much has changed since “Chicago by Boat” started, back when a minute-long standup from Baer in his casual, easygoing style was common.

“As the audience attention span gets shorter, a minutelong standup now would seem almost interminable to the viewer,” Baer says.

A die-hard city dweller until his family’s move to Evanston three years ago, Baer was stunned how much he enjoyed writing and hosting six historical programs about the suburbs for WTTW. “I thought I’d be in purgatory. I found that it was fascinating,” says Baer, who attended Lincoln School in Highland Park. “You never hear about the south suburbs except for crime. But it’s an epic story of American industry, from steel mills to labor unrest — it was rich in Greek tragedy.

Baer would like to host a show entitled “Chicago on Vacation,” an examination of grand spots such as Lake Geneva. And last year, Baer expanded his scope well beyond the area. He hosted “10 Buildings that Changed America” for PBS, visiting everything from Trinity Church in Boston to the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, where he interviewed architect Frank Gehry.

“He said, ‘I’m grouchy — I’m going to give a terrible interview,’ “ Baer recalls. “When the camera started rolling, he was brilliant. When we asked if he could give us a tour, we could barely get the camera out of the tripod to follow him, he was moving so fast.”

More “10 that Changed America” projects are on the drawing board, including homes and city parks, which fit perfectly with Baer’s lifelong passion for architecture. It was buoyed by an architectural drafting class at Deerfield High School and an “eye-opening” history of urban development class during his junior year in Luxembourg through Miami University in Ohio.

“These are dream projects, seeing these incredible works of design and architecture,” he says.

And to think those dreams may have never come to pass had it been pouring rain on the Chicago River one day. Says Baer, “I’ve often thought that if John wasn’t on that boat, I may not have had this career.” ■ Geoffrey Baer. illustration
