A crazy-eight list of things that befuddle

I

consider myself reasonable, a decent judge of what makes sense and what doesn’t in this world. Which is why I’m perplexed at the following: 1) Why do bars, communities and others hold Oktoberfests in September? Aren’t 31 days enough to find an appropriate date for an event that, by its name, believes October is the best month for the celebration? 2) Who decided television — already ubiquitous in homes, restaurants and elsewhere — needed to muscle its way into gas stations as well? Is there any way to turn Gas Station TV off when I’m at the pump? Where’s the remote control? 3) With jumbo scoreboards in stadiums, why do National Football League public-address announcers continue to loudly inform fans of the down and distance to go — along with what yard line the ball is on — after each play? Even denizens in the cheap seats can see where the football rests along with the first-down chain. 4) A sticker on the back of a Comcast truck: “Driver carries no cash.” Are cable repairmen often targets of robbers? And has that sticker thwarted a would-be thief driving behind the truck? 5) For those who belittle the importance of hyphens and other small bits of grammar, consider this recent headline: “DirecTV resigns with NFL.” They did not opt out of their billion-dollar contract with the league; they decided to re-sign it. That hyphen turns the whole meaning

of the headline on its head. for beautiful beds, inside 6) Please explain to me why “It is what it is” swept the country as a meaningful phrase. 7) Since time immemorial, baseball has featured foul lines and foul poles. Yet if the ball hits either, it’s just the opposite — fair and in play. Might as well call the batter’s box the pitching mound. 8) A person sent me, with no name and no return chicago hinsdale lake forest address, a recent cover headline from this paper that read 773 404 2020 630 655 0497 847 295 8370 “To The Manor Born.” It was believed to be a gotcha shopbedside.com moment for the sender, who scribbled the phrase “tut tut” and admonished me to read Shakespeare. Why was the mailing anonymous? I have no idea. But what I could have written in return is that one of my fa-11.14 BSM NSW Sferra co-op.indd 1 vorite activities — especially after a glass of Pinot Noir — is to tell anyone within earshot that the correct phrase is “to the manner born,” uttered by one Prince of Denmark. Then why that headline? Because Meg Carroll, whose picture appeared above it, owns a store called Bedside Manor. I would never want to befuddle anyone. . Enjoy the weekend.

Photography reveals the lifestyle at former Ryerson home A boy takes a look at people canoeing on the Des Plaines River at the home of Edward Ryerson. photography

The beauty of Brushwood in 1972.

ward ramney

photography by ed-

The path to Brushwood, off of Riverwoods Road, winds its way through a chute of tall trees, with sinuous limbs that appear to reach out for each other to form a hooded canopy. Beyond lays the house: a country-style, red-brick affair, large but not ostentatiously so, choosing instead, it seems, to bow to the picturesque woods that serve as its backdrop. Decades earlier, this home belonged to Edward L. Ryerson, a Chicago businessman and civic leader who, between 1942 and 1972, used the property as his family’s summer home before donating the house, and the 279 acres of eponymous woodland that came with it, to the Lake County Forest Preserve. Today, it is the welcome center for those interested in exploring Ryerson Woods, as well as a locus for discourse on nature and culture; until Thursday, Oct. 30, it will also host a new photography exhibit from Ryerson’s grandson, Edward Ranney. “It’s really a show to open up how one family used a specific special place,” Ranney says, “and to give people who don’t know any of us the human context that the place was built on.” For the exhibit, Ranney, a well-known photographer, juxtaposed a select group of photos he took of Brushwood in 1972 with 30 or so photos his grandfather took in the three decades previous. “The intent,” Ranney notes, “is not only to show the feeling and style of the place but also the enjoyment and fun of the people who used those rooms and were a family there.” At one end of the home, Ryerson’s photos portray various members of the family, at rest but just as often at play. When a subject of the photos himself, Ryerson is often pictured in mirth, entertaining his grandkids as a magician with a top hat and what is obviously a fake mustache.

His grandson’s photos, taken a year after his grandparents’ deaths, are much more subdued. In one, a bold, curvilinear tree stands in the foreground before a dwindling army of its stark companions, stripped bare by a change of seasons. In others, ornately furnished rooms are vividly captured, yet it’s this same quality that works to pronounce their hollow, polished emptiness. A particularly striking photograph shows a chair slightly misaligned with its desk, left ajar like a door, as if someone had only just evacuated the room.

“The intent is not only to show the feeling and style of the place but also the enjoyment and fun of the people who used those rooms and were a family there.” | Edward Ranney It is an altogether strange sensation to experience photos of a place while you are standing inside the same such place, years later, though perhaps this is the point: to bridge the Brushwood of the past with the Brushwood that stands before us today. “It really was a family place and, of course, it’s outstanding for its beauty and seclusion and privacy,” Ranney says. “But my grandparents made it a point of opening it up to people. So you have this interesting combination of it being a family house and now, with their dedication, it being totally a public house.” When the exhibit ends, Ranney says the photographs will remain at Brushwood, where they will become a permanent collection of images for generations to come. ■

Forest Park work hums along toward 2015 opening ■ by simon murray Much bigger than a football field and bookended by ravines on both sides, Forest Park is a seven-acre parcel of land in Lake Forest that offers stunning vistas of Lake Michigan. In recent years, however, those views had been marred by the overgrowth of invasive plants, threatening the park’s appearance. So “one of the simplest things for us to do was to return the view to the residents so they could again see the lake,” says Cliff Miller, landscape consultant. On a recent sunny day, a flurry of activity takes place on Forest Park’s roadway overlooking the bluff. Loaders are moving forest preserve mix. Workers in hardhats are shoveling while pickup trucks roll backward towards the cliff edge. And the view — which has noticeably improved — offers an unrestricted picture of Lake Michigan, awash with shards of rolling sunlight. Standing nearby are a couple of the park’s devotees: the Forest Park Project Board’s Vice President and Treasurer, Joan DePree, and Peter Cherry. It’s Cherry who mentions that the project began in 2008, when DePree was president of the Lake Forest Garden Club. To celebrate the club’s 100th anniversary and the city’s sesquicentennial, the members approached the City of Lake

Forest with a gift of a landscape design plan for Forest Park. Forest Park — the first park in Lake Forest and among the oldest on the North Shore — needed to be rehabilitated. Its infrastructure — the road, storm sewers, and electrical system —were failing. The Garden Club seized the moment. But it envisioned much more than a simple renovation. To that end, a master plan by Stephen Stimson Associates was accepted by the city in May of 2012, and by last year work was already underway on fixing the infrastructure, paid for by the city at the cost of $800,000. Since then (while also adding improvements to the storm drains and putting in granite curbing), the Forest Park Project Board has raised about $2.5 million of its $3.2 million goal from community residents at all levels of giving. The Legacy Circle donors, including Lake Forest Bank & Trust and the Chicago Bears, have each given $100,000 or more. While other parks in the community had been developed over the years, adding playgrounds and athletic fields, Forest Park (“a passive park,” notes DePree) had generally stayed frozen in time since the 19th century, when landscape architects Almerin Hotchkiss and O.C. Simonds built the park into the bluff.

Horticulture specialist Galen Gates and landscape consultant Cliff Miller take a look at the changes at Forest Park in Lake Forest. photography by joel lerner

“What so many people unfortunately don’t understand is that we have above ground because of what we have below ground,” says Galen Gates, horticulture specialist. “[The bluff] is a very delicate ecosystem. It continues to slough and fall away below.” Which is why Gates is responsible for selecting trees and shrubs that can provide longterm stabilization. A loader cuts short the explanation with the beep-beep-beep of its backward movement as it dumps the forest preserve mix that will make up some of the 1,300 feet of new woodland paths. equipment departs the park this fall, all pathways will be open to the public. Cherry says the park should be finished by Memorial Day, with a dedication in June next year. Already along the pathways, bush honeysuckles and more have been planted. Eventually the new benches, drinking fountains (with dog bowls at the base), bike racks, and other amenities for the community’s enjoyment will be constructed. Though recently it might not have been easy to see the forest for the trees — or even the lake for the trees — it is now. ■

re-DefIne, nOt re-DesIGn! Staged Homes Professionals® provide both buyers and sellers a variety of “concierge services”—though it’s statistically proven that Staged Homes® sell faster and for more money than unstaged homes, did you know that as a home buyer, the services of an ASP® are also helpful in making the most of your new home? Here are just a few of the reasons to consider professionally staging your home when it’s time to list it on the market. You never get a second chance to make a first impression! Home staging professionals help you ensure that your home’s first impression on potential buyers will be the very best. By creating a room design that is neutral and open to interpretation, buyers are better able to view your home and “mentally move in”, creating an emotional connection that will help your house move quickly and at its highest possible value. An objective eye lends to a competitive sale! How you live in a home is completely different from how you sell a home. The professional home stager is able to look at your home objectively in a way that you, your friends and your family cannot—after all, you’ve lived there for years and have many happy memories associated with the rooms. Your buyers, however, don’t have that history—that’ll be theirs to make, when they make an offer. When your house is on the market, it’s absolutely critical to create rooms with aesthetically pleasing focal points, direct the flow of traffic between rooms and generate an overall ambience that promotes each room as an oasis of calm, inviting buyers to not think of the property as “your house”, but instead, to see it as “their home”.

Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Surgery of the Hand

Color, art and room themes—what’s really important? There’s a reason we trust the services of trained professionals—when you cut corners, you always take a risk. Just as you wouldn’t trust a janitor to perform surgery, you should remember that home sales and Home Staging® are professions like any other, and that by enlisting the services of a trained professional, you’ve shown prospective home buyers how serious you are about the piece of real estate you’re listing. While your friend or family member may indeed have a good “eye” for home design, ask yourself if you’d be willing to keep your home on the market longer, or settle for a lesser offer than

your home is worth, just to save a few pennies in having it professionally staged. To get a top-notch home sale, you must be willing to invest in top-notch service!

Beacon lights the way for new education approach

Jeff Bell

■ by jake jarvi In its first year, Beacon Academy in Evanston is approaching high school education in a whole new way. “Schools today are very similar to when we went to school and when our parents went to school,” says Jeff Bell, Head of School at Beacon Academy. “Schools evolve glacially. We’re a little ahead of that, and that’s exciting. Look at computers, look at technology. I haven’t had a landline in a decade, but there are plenty of desks in schools. What’s up with that?” Beacon Academy is setting itself apart from traditional high schools in many ways. They break up the day differently, they break up the week differently — and their

curriculum hinges on interacting with the community. Hidden in plain sight between the restaurants and shops of Evanston, just a couple blocks from the Davis Street train station, their building looks more like a sleek design firm than a school. It encompasses three floors of a modern office building with a design aesthetic based in glass walls, wood and metal accents, and white board walls for writing on. Each classroom space is filled with comfortable rolling chairs, and there’s nary a desk to be found. Founded in Montessori principles like experiential learning, entrepreneurial thinking, and interdisciplinary studies, Beacon aims to merge high academic standards with nurturing students’ imaginations, creativity, and ethical development. It’s the classic Montessori recipe meant to foster outside-the-box thinking and leadership skills. The school day begins at 8:45 a.m. with a 15-minute community meeting or advisory. On Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays, regular class periods are held. Math and foreign language periods are an hour long and, due to the retention that repetition fosters, meet more frequently than subjects like English, science, and history, which are 90 minutes long and don’t meet as often. Wednesdays are known as project day. They begin with a longer, student-led advisory period before breaking into free time

outside of the regular class schedule. That’s time students can devote to homework or to independent study. Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Beacon’s new approach is that the arts and physical education programs are hosted offsite by partnering with long-running Evanston institutions. Piven Theater delivers the drama program. Visual arts programs are run by the Evanston Art Center. Music comes by way of The Musical Offering, a dedicated music school in Evanston. The Evanston Public Library serves as the main library for students. And Beacon’s Math, Science, and Technology programs are augmented by Northwestern University’s Office of Science Tech Engineering Math (STEM) Education Partnerships. Beacon Academy’s own STEM focus also incorporates the elements of art and design as well, referred to as STEAMD. As the students get older, Beacon Academy’s community integration leads to internship opportunities, adding increasing real world experience into their daily lives. Twice during the year — once in the autumn, once in the spring — there’s an interim week, where ordinary classes aren’t held. Instead, the students embark on a oneweek focused study in particular disciplines. The faculty designs four-hour courses on everything from bio-ethics to guitar making for interim weeks to keep the students engaged and on their toes. This fall launched its first full school year, and its inaugural class is made up from

students from 23 different schools around the North Shore, Chicago, and the western suburbs coming in at the ninth- and tenthgrade levels. “We get asked if we’re only taking kids from Montessori schools because of the Montessori principles as part of our mission,” says Kate Anderson, director of admissions. “Not at all. Students are coming from a wide range of types of schools: Independents, Montessori, Catholic, public, homeschooled. They’re bringing a range of backgrounds, too.”

“I haven’t had a landline in a decade, but there are plenty of desks in schools. What’s up with that?” | Jeff Bell “There’s a need for more schools,” says Bell. “We’ve had almost double the applications we thought we’d have. We chose Evanston because we were trying to draw from a wide berth of people and it’s worked out. Obviously, being in the same neighborhood as Northwestern, this is a wonderful educational community and it’s got an urban feel that we were looking for. Our proximity to public transportation has been a big draw for people as well. We call it “urban without the grit.” For more information visit beaconacademychicago.org. ■

Auto repair chief may also be the guy under the hood ■ by simon murray A black Maybach sits in the garage like a relic, the equivalent of a pile of T-Rex bones lashed together into a grinning skeleton looming over a museum hall. Except, of course, that no one in his or her right mind expects a T-Rex to be able to be ridden, let alone driven over 80 miles per hour. But the owner of the Maybach inevitably does — or at least 55 mph, which is the speed limit on Route 41, where Benz of Highland Park is located. Fred Crudele, the president of Benz of Highland Park and a Mercedes-Benz master-certified technician, wheels in an SL-Class Roadster, so new it looks as if it’s practically just exited the lot. He’s going to start working on repairs. Though the two cars could not be further apart —one, a continuation of the parent company Daimler AG’s vision; the other an end of an era —the contrast speaks to Crudele’s extensive experience as a trained technician in luxury cars. But Crudele doesn’t want to operate behind a closed garage door. In fact, it’s the reason he resigned after 16 years of working with Knauz Continental Autos, a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Lake Bluff. Instead, his business, which opened on April 1 at 3080 Skokie Valley Road, has

been founded on the premise of transparency: a breath of fresh air in auto repair. Want to know why, exactly, your car has been making that strange noise? Need an explanation on a faulty light on the dashboard? Crudele is obliged to open up the hood and point out exactly what’s going on for his customers. And the customers also know whom it is (Crudele) that’s working on their car. No mysterious technician. No phantom charges in the invoice. Just a one-on-one relationship between the customer and the repairman. Crudele first started working on cars in college, where he was studying business. He realized that his hobby had quickly become a passion. And he still remembers the first car he ever worked on. It was a Ford Crown Victoria LTD ’84. “It was not firing on all cylinders. It was running really rough,” recalls Crudele. At Knauz he was trained by the senior technicians, but he felt separated from the customer. He realized that without speaking to them directly, the opportunity was lost to incorporate a teaching lesson — if desired — as well as building trust with the client. “When you’re not dealing directly with the customer, a lot of times the message isn’t put to them clearly as to what’s wrong

with their car,” says Crudele. “I can deal with them directly, and they really like that

service — being connected to the guy that’s working on their car.” ■

‘Pretty and Proper’ author poised to engage Winnetka showgoers ■ by katie rose mceneely

Holly Holden, a designer and the author of “The Pretty and Proper Living Room,” is speaking at this year’s Antiques + Modernism Show in Winnetka on Nov. 8. Reading: I just bought the book “The Hotel on Place Vendome” by Tilar J. Mazzeo. I normally do enjoy reading about architectural history and interior design, especially the kind I admire. Nancy Lancaster — a designer that I admire and respect — was a Virginian, and she ended up marrying into British aristocracy and designing four different houses (she had four different husbands). She went on to own [the British decorating firm] Colefax & Fowler. What she did, and what I try to do, is make rooms look evolved and not designed, so they’re very inviting and comfortable — formal, but unpretentious. I create rooms with no velvet ropes. Listening: I usually listen to Bach or Chopin or Debussy. Watching: “Downton Abbey”! It’s definitely my genre of design. I’m in the process of working to create a PBS program about my book, so PBS is up in the top, as far as I’m concerned. Following: I like to follow the art world, and I’m a big advocate of auctions. I purchase the majority of accessories and furniture and art for my clients at auction. I follow them through a publication called

“Arts and Antiques,” referred to also as “the Bee.” Activity: The Women’s Board of the Winnetka Community House Antiques + Modernism Show found me, I believe, through a lovely blog called Frances Schultz. She reviewed my book, and Kristin Shea, who is working on the committee for the show, contacted me, and we decided it would be a very good match. I was delighted when they invited me to speak. “Inherited Style” is the name of my talk — a lecture and tea at 2 p.m. on Nov. 8. I’m looking forward to meeting all these board members! They seem so delightful and engaged at the Community House, so I’m really looking forward to meeting new people. I’m also working on the next book in a series — “Pretty and Proper Palm Beach.” I think it’s due probably the end of next year — it’s very exciting! It’s a little different than New England. Eating: We travel non-stop, so I’m always trying new foods. We’re going to Paris in November, and we love French food. On a daily basis: yogurt. Since it’s starting to become fall, I’ve been making soup. What is your favorite mistake? My biggest mistake was not writing this book “The Pretty and Proper Living Room” earlier. I really enjoyed doing it. I wrote it for my daughter, who was moving to Germany. She was married in Berlin and as she was

Holly Holden photography

by dean greenblatt

packing up, she said, “Mummy, you’ve always done my interior design — could you just write some notes?” I started writing some notes and collecting pictures and eventually I had to get an editor. I gave it to her three years later! She had such good questions. As a professional you take some terminology for granted. I had so much fun because she would ask the questions that I wanted to answer, and it made for a very

easy, approachable design book. I call the style “Inherited Design” because most of the things are a secret code passed down to mothers and daughters through generations. It kept me very tempered and focused. For more information on Holden’s interior design, visit prettyandproper.com. Why every anniversary is worth celebrating ■

by joanna brown

Tom recently celebrated his son’s wedding and told me, “Look at that beautiful child and think about how much your partner loves you both. Don’t wait for an anniversary. Celebrate every day!” Do you have a favorite spot on the North Shore to celebrate your anniversary? Tell me about at at Joanna@ northshoreweekend.com. ■

When it comes to anniversaries, my mind is a sieve. I can remember where all my friends were married but not so much the date of these fine affairs. I say this because I’m consistently blindsided by their announcements that they’re vacationing somewhere glamorous to celebrate their 10th, 15th and 20th anniversaries — you know, the big ones. The 11th, 16th and 21st anniversaries often pass without so much as a text-message acknowledgement. I’m as guilty of that as anyone. And so this week I polled my friends: Why is every anniversary worth celebrating? Their advice, combined with some research of my own, produced a pretty awesome list. — It has historical significance. While anniversary gift exchanges go back to Europe in the Middle Ages, the list of traditional anniversary gifts possesses Victorian roots; many of the gifts on the list have similar historical value. Consider the paper that symbolizes the first anniversary: the papyrus of ancient Egypt represented knowledge and the unfolding of life. And the papyrus plant was a symbol of joy and youth, freshness and love, as it flourished on the fertile riverbanks. Copper, associated with the 22nd anniversary, is linked to Venus, the goddess of love. She was worshipped by the people of Cyprus, where copper mining flourished during Hellenistic and Roman

times. — “Sustaining a successful marriage/commitment is reason to celebrate,” said my friend Sarah, married 13 years ago on a humid day in Nashville as we bridesmaids perspired in our floor-length royal-blue gowns. How true: In a recyclable world, commitment is rare. You can lease a car, rent a home, and keep your cell phone on a monthto-month basis. Sustaining a marriage any longer than those necessities is worth celebrating. — It’s a show of strength. In Germany, the list of traditional anniversary gifts mimics the progressive strengthening of the marriage. Today, we honor athletes and other muscled competitors — and who can forget the Feats of Strength portion of the Seinfeld family’s Festivus celebration? Why not mark an 11-year marriage, too, for its strength? — “They always say that marriage is hard work, so at least once a year you celebrate your hard work,” my newlywed friend Catherine told me. She has a point: you’d raise a glass and toast a promotion at work or the completion of an especially stressful kitchen renovation, so why not salute another successful year of marriage? — It’s a celebration of the life you have together. Yes, anniversaries mark the day you began your marriage, but they also acknowledge all that you have accomplished as a pair, including the birth of your children and the blending of step- and half-siblings and in-laws. wines of the week ■ by johnson ho For the past three decades, the American wine critics have preferred power over harmonious elegance in their red-wine ratings. This trend arose much to the dismay of classically educated European wine professionals. Frequently compared with American football power plays vs. skillful European soccer tactics, a new genre of winemakers decided to pioneer a compromise style that appealed to the New World palate while retaining much of the Old World identity. Here are some of the most distinguished success stories.

SATURDAY DINNER 2004 Elderton Command Vineyard Shiraz, Barossa, South Australia; $93 An early attention-grabber from Down Under, its creator aimed for an Uebertackler red that could overpower even the most decadent BBQ and intensely gamey dishes. A virtual tidal wave of assorted black fruit, black pepper, dark chocolate, vanilla and pie crust aromas leaps from the glass into the nose and palate like a farmer’s pie in your face. Originally paired with rustic lamb dishes in the outback, the Australian Shiraz has found a fan base of fusion, Southeastern Asian, North African and Caribbean cuisines. Best 8-15 years from vintage and after two hours of decanting. MIDWEEK MEAL 2007 Domenico Clerico Arte, Piedmonte, Italy; $45 The foothills region of the Italian Alps is best known for its long-lived reds from the villages of Barolo and Barbaresco. They are made from the fickle and lean Nebbiolo (as in nebulous or foggy) grape. Mr. Clerico did not feel that the stringent restrictions of the local wine laws permitted a more sumptuous style that would appeal to a more cosmopolitan gourmet base. After traveling to France to learn about their best practices in winemaking, he decided to import their oak barrels and adopt many of their superb techniques in order to widen the appeal of the proud, but primitive, local wines. His Artist series selection quickly gained international acclaim. The typically austere cherry aromas of the traditional Piedmontese wines have gained a plethora of ripe berries nuances and a velvety texture here. Fabulous with meaty pasta, steaks or hearty cheeses. Best 8-20 years from vintage and after three hours of decanting. BEST VALUE 2010 Can Blau, Montsant, Spain; $19 The Montsant wine region distinction is relatively new in Spain, although its wineproducing history dates back centuries. Notorious for its rough-and-tumble character that only poor local people drank, the European Common Market recently funded an initiative to introduce modern vinification techniques to the region. The results have been stunning. Gone are the clumps of dirt in the smell or the whiff of barnyard and old saddle leather in the aftertaste. Due to its only recent emergence into respectability, the wines represent stunning bargains for oenophiles of traditional Mediterranean cuisines, especially with cured meats, spicy stews, tacos, burritos and enchiladas. Best 4-10 years from vintage and one hour of decanting.

the gourmet

This is a classic accompaniment to a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner and can be made using store-bought or homemade cornbread; we love Jiffy mix (you'll need two boxes). MAKES 8 to 10 servings

2 1/2 cups chopped yellow onions

2 tablespoons chopped fresh sage

3/4 cup (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter plus more for baking dish

1 1/2 cups 1/4" slices celery

1 tablespoon each of chopped fresh rosemary and thyme

1 pound day-old cornbread, broken into 1 1/2"-2" pieces (9 cups) 1 pound breakfast sausage links, casings removed

1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 3 cups low-sodium chicken broth, divided 1 1/4 cups chopped toasted pecans (optional) 1/2 cup chopped flat-leaf parsley

1. Arrange racks in upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 250°F. Butter a 13x9x2" baking dish; set aside. Scatter cornbread in a single layer on 2 rimmed baking sheets. Bake, stirring often and rotating sheets halfway through, until dried out, about 1 hour. Let cool. Transfer to a very large mixing bowl. 2. Meanwhile, cook sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat, breaking up into 1/2"-1" pieces with a wooden spoon, until browned, 8-10 minutes. Transfer to bowl with cornbread but do not stir. 3. Heat 3/4 cup butter in same skillet; add onions and celery and cook, stirring often, until softened and just beginning to brown, about 10 minutes. Add to cornbread in bowl. 4. Return skillet to heat. Add vinegar; cook, scraping up browned bits from bottom of pan, for 1 minute. Pour into bowl with cornbread. Gently fold in 1 1/2 cups broth, pecans, if using, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme. Add salt and pepper. Let cool. 5. Preheat oven to 350°F. Whisk 1 1/2 cups broth and eggs in a small bowl. Fold gently into cornbread until thoroughly combined, taking care not to mash cornbread (mixture will look wet). Transfer to prepared dish, cover with foil, and bake until an instantread thermometer inserted into the center of dressing registers 160°F, about 40 minutes. DO AHEAD: Dressing can be made 1 day ahead. Uncover; let cool. Cover and chill. 6. Bake dressing, uncovered, until set and top is browned and crisp, 40-45 minutes longer (if chilled, add 10-15 minutes).

2 teaspoons kosher salt 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 2 large eggs

Mansion is worth its salt The Morton Salt estate was designed by David Adler.

■ by simon murray While studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, American architect David Adler bought a bicycle. He used it during his travels across the European countryside, studying the bucolic expanses of France, England, and Italy. Along the way, Adler took note of the differences in the grand country manors that seemed as much a part of the landscapes as the rolling verdant hills. One hundred years ago (or approximately seven iterations of the Morton Salt girl ago), Adler was commissioned to re-create a French provincial style manor by Jean Morton Cudahy, scion to the Morton Salt Company and her husband, Joseph, in Lake Forest.

“This French country estate is steeped in history.” | Akos Straub Joseph Cudahy — owner of a Chicago meat packing company, and a successful businessman in his own right — asked Adler to travel across Europe once again: this time to collect furnishings that conformed to the neo-classicism of the Louis XVI style design of their home (think the Palace of Versailles). Adler returned with decorative arts and paintings that complemented the magnificent chandeliers, gilt moldings, 24-karat-gold Sherle Wagner bathroom fixtures, herringbone parquet flooring, and custom marble throughout. The Cudahys named it Innisfail, a nod to their

Irish roots (Inis Fáil is the ancient name of Ireland) according to the book “Classic Country Estates of Lake Forest”, by Kim Coventry, Daniel Meyer, and Arthur Miller. And though they would later move into another mansion designed by Adler in favor of a more secluded area, Innisfail still stands as regal and majestic as it did a century ago. The 11,000-square-foot estate is located on two acres on Sussex Lane in Lake Forest and includes a swimming pool, tennis court, outdoor terrace, and botanical gardens — the last one influenced no doubt by Jean Cudahy’s father, Joy Morton, a naturalist, founder of the Morton Arboretum and creator of Arbor Day. Today, Countess Barbara Pagowska-Cooper, president of the American Institute of Polish Culture, owns the property. When the home first hit the market in June 2010, it was listed with an asking price of $7.9 million. The Coopers have since updated the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning — while staying conscious of maintaining the original enduring qualities of Adler’s work. The price is now listed as $8.9 million, which, according to Coldwell Banker luxury real estate broker Evan Smith, is due to “the appreciation of the market [that] has increased the value of the home along with the complete renovations done throughout the home” over time. Adds Smith’s co-broker Akos Straub, “This French country estate is steeped in history.” With 17 formal rooms, eight bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a library, and staff quarters, Innisfail has been compared to the much larger Fleur De Lys mansion in Los Angeles, which sold this year for $102 million. ■

The interior touches are elegantly done.

Holecek heaps heavy praise on prized linebacker O’Brien Celtic ride: Loyola Academy’s Brian O’Brien comes up with a textbook tackle against a Providence Celtics wide receiver in earlier action this fall. photography

■ by bill mclean sports@northshoreweekend.com During a game against DePaul College Prep earlier this month, Loyola Academy football coach John Holecek managed to upbraid, praise and joke with Ramblers senior inside linebacker Brian O’Brien — all at the same time. O’Brien had “messed up on a play,” Holecek recalled after LA’s 38-14 defeat of visiting St. Rita on Oct. 18. “I yelled at him and told him, ‘Now you’re only No. 3 on my list of all-time great [inside linebackers],’ ” added Holecek, in his ninth season at LA. “I was kidding around with him. I’m 42 years old going on 18, and Brian is 18 going on 42. He’s mature, a true leader. I’ve coached some great linebackers here. Brian … he’s way up there, an exceptional linebacker, a throwback linebacker.” And one who has what it takes to be a must-have cast member in a prep football movie like “Varsity Blues” or “All the Right Moves.” The 6-foot, 215-pound captain would look perfecting normal getting to the quarterback in the fourth quarter — and wearing the homecoming king crown afterward. “We like to mess with Brian,” Ramblers senior defensive back Mark Dowdle said after picking off two passes and recovering a fumble against St. Rita. “Especially when it comes to his hair … he's got those great locks going for him.” But when O’Brien covers that mane with a helmet and hits a football field, he’s all business and all about locking horns with overmatched ball carriers. “He’s an intense kid, a great leader,” Dowdle added. “Brian gets us all going on the field.” O’Brien started to establish himself as a sturdy varsity linebacker at the end of his sophomore year. In LA’s 27-24 Class 8A state semifinal loss to Glenbard North in 2012, O’Brien had 10 tackles. Current Northwestern standout

freshman running back Justin Jackson starred for the Panthers back then. O’Brien then ranked second among teammates in total tackles (117) for last year’s 8A state runner-up. He also forced three fumbles and finished with seven hurries. Eight of his 70 tackles (through seven games) for this year’s club (7-1, 2-1 in the Chicago Catholic League Blue) came in LA’s 10-7 defeat of Providence on Oct. 4. “He’s the heart and soul of our team,” said Ramblers senior outside linebacker/running back Mark Nichol, who rocked and doled out punishment (64 rushing yards, three touchdown runs, 29 receiving yards, three tackles for loss) against St. Rita (6-2, 1-1). “He fills the gaps, does his job, and it seems like he’s always in the right spot to make a play. “We all look up to him.” O’Brien deflected attention from himself and pointed to others as the ones responsible for the bulk of his success. “Our coaches … they do a lot,” said O’Brien, who attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Glenview and has been a linebacker since the fifth grade. “As a captain, I do a lot of leading on the field, and I do everything I can to help us win. But the coaches — they’re the ones who make sure we’re all in the right spots.” LA’s showdown with St. Rita last weekend in Wilmette had all of the elements of a classic clash. Both teams boasted 6-1 records on a crisp, now-this-is-a-prep-football-weather day. The game-time temperature was 45 degrees. O’Brien’s uniform number? See the game-time temp. “I wanted to be a quarterback when I started playing football in back yards,” O’Brien said. “Everybody wanted to be a quarterback at some point, right?” He was the son of proud parents Brian and Michelle O’Brien, as the three were introduced to Loyola Academy’s senior day crowd before the start of the St. Rita game.

by joel lerner

“That was surreal, walking out with them on our home football field,” the linebacker recalled after the convincing victory. “It’s hard for me — so hard for me — to believe I’m a senior.” Off the field, he dubs himself “a math guy.” O’Brien looks at numbers and relishes the task of tackling them. Which should come as no surprise to sore running backs and quarterbacks. “I like solving problems, figuring things out, finding answers,” O’Brien said. Ramblers senior wideout Spencer Cecola, meanwhile, enjoys knowing there’s a Brian O’Brien on his side during football games. “He’s an awesome leader and role model, a player who always knows what’s going on in games,” said Cecola, who caught three passes for 23 yards from third-string senior quarterback Aidan Walsh in the win against St. Rita. “You’d expect a linebacker like Brian to be loud and aggressive off the field. But he’s not; he’s calm. “We respect him, and he respects all of his teammates.” Notable: Walsh finished with 113 yards passing (11for-19) and 94 yards rushing (on 10 carries) in the St. Rita game — his first varsity start. … Nichol rushed for a sixyard TD and a pair of one-yard scores. … Ramblers senior defensive back Ryan Zinkula returned an interception 45 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter, upping LA’s lead to 13-0. LA’s other scores: senior Mike Kurzydlowski’s 24-yard field goal and senior running back John Saliba’s 11-yard TD run. … Ramblers junior Dara Laja rushed 22 times for a team-high 98 yards; senior wideout Owen Buscaglia (two receptions) led the team in receiving yards (41). … Senior DB Nick Mandera also came down with an interception against St. Rita’s Mustangs. … Loyola visits Mount Carmel (4-4, 0-3) Oct. 24 at 7:15 p.m. at Gately Stadium for its regular season finale. ■

Round Two is moving day for Loyola Academy girls ■ by kevin reiterman

Everything looked a little out of focus for the Loyola Academy girls golf team. And then, Day Two arrived at Hickory Point Golf Club in Decatur. Click. The Ramblers, who were sitting in fourth place after Day One (330) on Oct. 17, got locked in. Led by junior Blake Yaccino, who earned all-state honors, and freshman Nina Rutkowski, who just missed all-state recognition, they rallied past two foes and wound up claiming runner-up honors in Class 2A for the second year in a row. After shooting a 319 on Oct. 18, Loyola ended up 15 strokes in back of first-place Hinsdale Central. “The difference?” said LA coach Jim Jackimiec, of his team’s comeback. “Only two schools (LA and Hinsdale Central) moved in the right direction on the second day. Everyone else moved the other way.” Jackimiec loved his team’s focus on Day Two. “The girls played like they were on a mission,” Jackimiec said. “They got focused. It’s hard to keep your focus in a two-day tournament like this. But they did it.” The other key? “They figured out the golf course,” said Jackimiec. “The 15th hole always is a problem. You see a lot of 7s, 8s and 9s being put up. The 13th is another tough hole.” Yaccino solved those two trouble holes, shooting par on both in Saturday’s action to finish with a 75. Her final tally was a 155. “She’s come a long way,” Jackimiec said. “And she put it all together (at state).” Rutkowski definitely is a player to watch. She also played well on the 13th and 15th holes and came away with a 157 total for 13th place. “I was hoping she’d break into the top 10,” said the Loyola coach. The ‘Fr.’ (freshman) next to her name doesn’t mean much. Rutkowski played like a seasoned veteran. “She reminds me a lot of Isabelle Kane (Dartmouth recruit who finished in a tie for second at last year’s state meet) — when Isabelle was a freshman,” Jackimiec said. “She’s got a super swing. Outstanding mechanics.” Loyola also received solid performances from sophomore Margaret Hickey (165) and junior Nicole Wetoska (175). So far, a state title has eluded the LA girls program. “But it will come,” said Jackimiec, who guided the LA boys to a state title in 1986. “The real fun is getting there.”

Decatur), they came in third with a score of 653. The run includes two first-place finishes, two seconds and two thirds. Another title certainly was in reach. New Trier was locked in a tie for first with eventual champion Hinsdale Central (634) after Day 1. “Tying them on the first day put us in good shape,” said NT head coach Scott Fricke. “We just didn’t finish well.” The Trevians ended up eight strokes better than fourth-place finisher Wheaton Warrenville South. Junior Louise McCulloch capped off a terrific season by shooting a 160 for 18th place. “She had a great year,” said Fricke. “She was our 5th and 6th golfer last year. She ended up passing a lot of No. 1s from a lot of teams.” Senior Becca Lindblad, who will play Division I hockey at the University of Connecticut, finished the two-day event with a 161 (22nd place).

“She really put a good year together,” Fricke said. NT’s other scorers were seniors Lauren Holly (164) and Lois Suh (168). “Lauren was Miss Consistent for us. She was one of the staples in our lineup,” said the NT coach. Highland Park Senior Kelli Ono didn’t come home with a medal, but she did represent her school well — once again. Ono, a four-year state qualifier, completed the 72 holes with a 160, which placed her in a tie for 18th place in Class 2A. Lake Forest Emily Young carded a 162 to end up as a top-25 finisher in Class 2A. The junior played her best golf on the second day: 39-38. Young hit her stride during the postseason. She won medalist honors at the Lake Forest Regional and then shot a 77 at the Warren Sectional. ■

‘Sar-ah! Sar-ah!’ ew Trier’s Shafiq is a major force — N and fan favorite

■ by bill mclean sports@northshoreweekend.com New Trier volleyball coach Hannah Hsieh stood before her Trevians at a practice this fall, asking for a volunteer to help her demonstrate techniques at the start of a defensive drill. The first hand she saw belonged to senior Sarah Shafiq. Shafiq is a 6-foot-5 middle. A front-row force who wants to dive — and subsequently roll — on hardwood for digs is akin to a 4-11 defensive specialist who wants to soar while attempting to block a kill from … Shafiq. Unusual. But Shafiq — a co-captain, third-year varsity member and University of CaliforniaBerkeley recruit — exhibited her versatility eagerly and admirably that day, fearlessly getting horizontal from a court’s back row to back Hsieh’s instructions. “Sarah is not afraid to hit the floor,” Hsieh says. “She’s moving well — that’s something she has worked hard on developing, along with becoming a consistent offensive option and hustling to a block. “Sarah,” she adds, “does everything you ask her to do, and she never complains. She’s a complete team player.” As a seventh-grader from Glencoe, Shafiq was a first-year volleyball player without a position. “I was horrible,” she recalls. “I had no idea what I was doing, and I wasn’t that athletic.” But she stuck with it and began to get a good feel for the sport the following year. Her commitment to volleyball eventually elbowed basketball to the side for good and led to a spot on her first Wildcat Juniors club team. From there, Shafiq’s game took off. Imagine the sudden flight of a volleyball after a thunderous kill hits the floor. After only one year of varsity volleyball (when NT finished runner-up at the Class 4A state tournament in 2012), Shafiq verbally committed to Cal. USA Volleyball invited her to attend a national camp a couple of summers ago. She helped her Wildcat Juniors age-group squad finish 15th at nationals in April, and last month PrepVolleyball.com named her one of only 100 Senior Aces in the country — an annual list of standout college-bound players selected by college coaches. “She’s awesome, a really hard worker,” says New Trier senior defensive specialist and co-captain Courtney Lewis. “At the net she’s intimidating; teams get scared and back up quickly as she gets ready to hit. But she sometimes tips it to specific places … nobody expects tips from her.” Expect to hear chants of “Sar-ah! Sar-ah!” after many of Shafiq’s kills in matches. An emphatic kill from Shafiq triggered the sing-songy reaction at the start of New Trier’s 25-13, 25-21 defeat of host Maine South on Oct. 15. In the second set, during a five-point stretch, she struck a pair of kills and two service points as NT improved to 17-10, 5-3 in the Central Suburban League South. “Playing volleyball for New Trier has been one of the best experiences of my life,” says Shafiq, who pounded 15 kills in NT’s three-set defeat of Crystal Lake South in last fall’s match for third place at state. “The history of the program, the traditions … I love the traditions. We each have a ‘family.’ I have two freshmen and a JV player in mine. I connect with them, give them advice and remind them to stay focused in school.” Shafiq likes to turn her attention to photography between matches, especially when a trip to Chicago Botanic Garden has been planned. On a wall in her bedroom hangs Soar good: New Trier senior Sarah Shafiq pops for a block during earlier action this fall. photoga black-and-white photo of a horse in a field at sunset. raphy by joel lerner “It calms me, looking at that photo, and I used to horseback ride,” she says. “I like taking pictures of nature.” who is thinking of pursuing a career in business or marketing.” She likes honing her game, too. Shafiq works out regularly with a personal trainer Right now Shafiq is making a living off her productive ways above volleyball nets. It can in Northfield, determined to up her vertical jump and become even more explosive than she is at the net. Sessions also include drills designed to improve her lateral movement. get loud up there. And violent. But there’s also a gentle, disarming side to her. It’s all paying off for New Trier’s Trevs. Hsieh sees it every day. “The way Sarah hits, the way she rips kills … she’s always picking us up when we’re “Sarah is one of the nicest — genuinely nicest — girls I’ve ever coached, a girl who is down,” Lewis says. able to laugh at herself ,” she says. “So kind, so nice, so fun to be around.” But Shafiq’s impact isn’t limited to the volleyball court. Before the start of New Trier’s first Notable: New Trier junior outside hitter Allyson Vaughn and sophomore middle Callie match against Evanston this fall, she sensed tension and jitteriness from her teammates. Fauntleroy each finished with five kills in the Trevians’ 25-13, 25-21 defeat of host Maine So she did something about it. “We were all sitting in a circle, looking pretty nervous,” Lewis recalls. “Sarah said to South Oct. 15. Fauntleroy and Shafiq (four kills) popped for a pair of blocks apiece in Park us, ‘Guys, we’ll be fine.’ That broke the ice, made all of us relax. She definitely eased our Ridge. Junior defensive specialist Isabelle Tashima paced NT in digs (10), and junior moods.” DS Talia Harrington contributed five digs and three aces. Trevs junior setter Alex Cook Two of the inspirations in her life are her parents, Mohammed and Susan, a former lofted 13 assists. One of Lewis’ two aces clinched the first set. … NT (18-10, 6-3) edged host Glenbrook South 21-25, 26-24, 28-26 on Oct. 20. … Eighth-seeded New Trier drew competitive swimmer. Business brought them together. “They work hard in everything and have always emphasized academics,” says Shafiq, the host school (No. 9 seed) for a Class 4A Warren Regional opener Oct. 28. ■

THE NORTH SHORE WEEKEND

With Kevin Reiterman & Bill McLean twitter: northshore sports @tnswsports Roaming the Sidelines Football Highland Park: A perfect 9-0 regular season is now in sight for the Giants, who handled visiting Niles North 34-14 on Oct. 17. Senior running back Cole Greenberg had a banner day, finishing the game as a 200yard rusher (202 yards on 35 carries) with three touchdowns. He also caught a touchdown pass from quarterback Sam Nevers (77 yards, 2 TDs). Wide receiver Jack McGuire helped the cause with a 31-yard TD reception, while Hallvard Lundevall caught three passes for 27 yards. Cristian Volpentesta ignited the Giants, who play at Glenbrook North (4-4) on Oct. 24, with a 68-yard kick return in the first quarter. Lake Forest: The Scouts will be looking to cap off their regular season with a 6-3 record, when they travel to Mundelein (0-8) on Oct. 24. LF took care of business in its Week 8 match-up against visiting ZionBenton on Oct. 17. Highlighted by Wes Janeck’s 155 rushing yards and three TDs, the Scouts rolled the Zee-Bees 42-6. Janeck now has 829 yards in eight games with 14 touchdowns. He had 42-yard TD run against the Zee-Bees. Fellow RB Quinn Julian showed off his sprinter’s speed with a 55-yard TD run in the first quarter. Quarterback Danny Carollo displayed plenty of accuracy: 9 of 10 for 105 yards. He hooked up with wide-out Mateo Hargitt on a 42-yard pass play in the third quarter. Michael Christensen caught 3 passes for 46 yards. Inside linebacker Jack Traynor starred once again on defense with seven solo tackles and an interception. New Trier: Having two running backs eclipse 100 yards usually is a recipe for success. That proved true for the 7-1 Trevians on Oct. 17, when they topped host Niles West 35-21. “Niles West has a high-powered offense,” said NT head coach Brian Doll. “You don’t keep them off the field.” Kevin Mulhern finished the game with 123 yards on 18 carries. He had a 9-yard touchdown on the opening drive. Caleb Roth ended up with 109 yards on 24 attempts. He reached the end zone twice in the first half: 4-yard run and 1-yard run. In the second half, he caught an 11-yard TD pass from sophomore quarterback Clay Czyzynski (9-for-17, 97 yards). Czyzynski also tossed a 3-yard scoring strike to Andrew Hauser (5 catches, 65 yards) at the end of the second quarter. The Trevians, who wrap up the regular season with home game against Evanston on Oct. 24, were led in tackles by cornerback Nick Krauskopf (7) and linebacker Will

Francke (6). Krauskopf also forced a fumble in the first half, while fellow cornerback Francis Fay came up with interception on the first series of the second half. James Doan had a fumble recovery, while Tim Fox and Colin Casas had tackles for loss. The Rundown Boys Cross Country Loyola: It went down to the sixth-man tiebreaker. Spencer Kelly’s effort proved invaluable to the Ramblers at the Chicago Catholic League Championships on Oct. 18 at Harms Woods. His 10th-place finish (16:11.94) wound up being the difference — after LA and St. Ignatius ended up in 29-29 tie. Senior Jack Carroll led the way for the Ramblers. He claimed top honors in a time of 15:19.88. He was followed in by teammates Todd Swenson (5th, 15:36.12), Paolo Tiongson (6th, 15:38.80), Patrick Reilly-Hayward (8th, 15:59.67) and Andrew Niewiaroski (9th, 16:11.94). Michael Banks was 11th overall (16:13.25). Girls Cross Country Loyola: Freshman Laine McKinley finished with runner-up honors (19:06.17) and helped the Ramblers to a second-place finish (38 points) at the GCAC Meet at Harms Woods on Oct. 18. St. Ignatius won the meet with 30 points. LA’s other scorers were freshman Payton Hoag (6th, 19:21.18), senior Caroline Zaworski (7th, 19:37.48), sophomore Alison Zahn (9th, 19:55) and freshman Louisa Edwards (14th, 20:16). Junior Caroline McKinley came in 15th (20:26), while sophomore Kathryn Connolly was 17th (20:40). Stick Nation Field Hockey Lake Forest: Scouts junior Elise Wong, one of the top midfielders in the Midwest, plans to forgo her senior season next year in order to attend Princeton University. “She is just awaiting the acceptance letter,” Lake Forest coach Melanie Walsh wrote in an email last week. Wong helped LF capture its second straight state championship and 11th overall in 2013. Poolside Girls Swimming Highland Park: The Giants defeated Maine East 146-38 on Oct. 10. Natalie Gelberg won two events: 50 free (26.92) and 500 free (5:45.09). The same goes for Ari Cole: 100 free (59.34) and 200 free (2:13.46). HP’s other individual winners were Avery Spitz in the diving (198.35), Molly Solem in the 100 back (1:08.91) and Sam Lask in the 100 breaststroke (1:12.54). press box >> page 59

freshman Kaitlyn Twadell (6th, 20:08.34) and sophomore Amanda Hsu (12th, 20:18.60). The other all-league runner was senior Lily Hanig (14th, 20:44). “Our top five runners today are all back (next year),” said HP head coach Andy Butler, noting that junior Rachel Powers missed the league meet due to a religious commitment. Performing at a high level has become a repeated pattern by Nawor. After missing last cross country season with an illness, she has emerged as one of the area’s elites. She took third in the Lake County Art Campbell Invite on Sept. 3, while she placed seventh at the Wheeling Invite on Oct. 11. She ran her PR (17:52.70) at the First to the Finish Invite at Detweiller Park in Peoria on Sept. 13. Finding her way back to Detweiller Park — for the state meet — is a real possibility for Nawor. “We’ve never had a state qualifier in girls cross country,” said Butler. “I believe Charlotte has a legitimate chance. Today was an important day for her progress.” At 5-foot-9, Nawor has a runner’s frame. And she knows how to compete. Last spring, she was the runner-up in the 800 meters (2:26.31) at the CSL North Meet. “She’s really rebounded well (from last year’s illness),” Butler said. “Missing last year’s cross country season has made her more appreciative about this season. “She’s got outstanding character,” the coach added. “She trains extremely hard. She’s one of those kids who wants to work harder than anyone else.” The Giants head to the Class 3A Libertyville Regional on Oct. 25 (2 p.m.).

Giants counting on reliable, resilient Nawor

■ by kevin reiterman sports@northshoreweekend.com Charlotte’s Web, a children’s novel written by E.B. White and loved by people of all ages, is known for its rhythm in writing. Charlotte Nawor, a distance ace at Highland Park High School, was “rhythm … in motion” on Oct. 18. The junior cruised the three-mile configuration at Maine East High School in a winning time: 18:13.74. It wasn’t her fastest time ever, but it came at a most opportune time:

the day of the Central Suburban League Championships. With Nawor leading the way, the Giants claimed the CSL North title for the first time since 2003. They finished with 26 points to easily beat Deerfield (47 points) and Glenbrook North (47 points). “I’m excited,” said Nawor, who placed fourth overall behind CSL South standouts Mimi Smith of New Trier (17:30.24), Christine Mujica of Niles West (18:08.36) and Emma Dzwierzynski of Evanston (18:12.36). “And, I’m not surprised by our team’s success. We’ve worked so hard.” HP placed five runners in the top 12: junior Marni Pine (3rd, 19:00.50), junior Celia Margolin (4th, 19:16.44),

Highland Park Boys The Giants received solid work from the 1-2 punch of Ben Casey and Brett Davidson. But it wasn’t enough to pick up a CSL North crown on Oct. 18 at Maine East High School. HP tied Deerfield for third (66 points). Niles North (41 points) and Glenbrook North (65 points) went 1-2. Casey was clocked in 15:35.31, which placed the HP senior third in the divisional race. He was seventh overall. Davidson entered the chute in sixth place (15:50.51) to earn all-CSL North honors. Senior Eddie Herz (16th, 16:33.27), freshman Fitz Laurie (19th, 16:35.79) and senior Andrew Huddleston (22nd, 16:51.54) rounded out the top five. Casey and Davidson figured to lead the Giants at the Class 3A Libertyville Regional on Oct. 25 (2:30 p.m.) at Adler Park. Casey has been a top-eight finisher at five major invites this fall, including his runner-up showings at the Lake County Art Campbell Invite on Sept. 3 and HornetRed Devil Invite on Sept. 6. He was fifth at the Wheeling Invite on Oct. 11 and sixth at the First to the Finish Invite in Peoria on Sept. 13. Davidson, a junior, has emerged as one of the area’s elites. He took fifth at the Lake County Invite and 12th at the Wheeling Invite. ■

New Trier head boys coach Pete Drevline tipped his cap — and his driver — to Hinsdale Central. He also put a bull’s eye on the Red Devils. “They’re the measuring stick,” said Drevline. And yes, he added, “They’re a tough act to follow.” The Red Devils celebrated their third straight Class 3A state title at the Den at Fox Creek Golf Course in downstate Bloomington on Oct. 17-18. They shot a lights-out 285 on Day Two and finished 21 strokes better than the Trevians (606). “We start Saturday’s round three strokes back, and then they go out and shoot a 285,” said Drevline. “That’s tough to beat. “They’ll be back,” the coach added. “And so will we.” The Trevians’ penchant for finishing in second in state — 2009, 2010, 2013 and now 2014 — has become a little too obvious. Especially for those who follow the National Football League. “It’s an accomplishment to finish in second place,” said Drevline. “But we’re feeling like the Buffalo Bills (0-4 in Super Bowls during the early 1990s) right now.” Timing is everything. New Trier’s 606 score would have been good enough to win Class 3A crowns in 2009, 2010 and 2011. “We’ll get it (done),” said Drevline. Three of the team’s top four finishers at state will return next year, including junior all-stater Andrew Huber (150, sixth-place tie). Huber, who shot two 38s and two 37s during the two days, didn’t receive a lot of fanfare, but he was steady all fall. “It was nice to see him go down there and get a state medal,” said Drevline. “He went down there and took care of business.” Sophomore Justin Choi, who emerged in a big way late in the season, shot a 151 (tie for 12th place) and just missed all-state recognition (top 10). “He waited his turn and made the most of his opportunity,” said Drevline. Junior Matt Murlick will be another player to watch during the 2015-16 season. He carded a 155 for 29th place. Drevline will say goodbye to three prized seniors: Will Connelly (22nd, 153), Will Seaman (156) and 2012 state champion Jack Junge (165). The Trevians will have plenty of top players returning, including Nick Iserloth. The junior standout, who played varsity as a freshman, missed most of the season after sustaining a broken finger playing basketball in early September.

North Shore Country Day A third Class 1A state title definitely was in reach for the North Shore Country Day boys golf team. The Raiders headed to the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington on Oct. 17-18 full of confidence. “I really thought if we played like we did at the regional and sectional, then we’d take care of business,” said NSCD head coach Joe Bosco. “But we didn’t quite do that.”

Still, the final results weren’t bad. The Raiders, who led by three strokes after the first nine holes of the tournament, finished the two-day event in second place, 10 strokes in back of El Paso-Gridley, 619-629. It’s hard not to be impressed by NSCD’s latest efforts at state. Bosco has directed the Raiders to two state titles and two state runner-up finishes in the past four seasons. “This was another fantastic, magical season for us,” said Bosco, who is in his fifth season at the school. Senior Sam Reategui, a Highland Park resident, came home with all-state honors after carding a 154 for 10th place, while junior Drew Miles (14th, 156) just missed all-state recognition. “Sam showed up and gave it his all,” said Bosco. Miles came into the tourney as one of the state’s hottest players. He earned medalist honors at the Bryon Regional and then led the Raiders with a 72 at the Seneca Sectional. Senior Andrew Blechman emerged with a top-20 finish at state (159), while junior Charles MacVicar finished 23rd (160). Senior Daniel Viellieu was right there with a 163. “Andrew has been our best player for the past two years,” said Bosco, noting that he played on four state-medal teams. MacVicar proved to be a valuable addition after IHSA permitted his transfer midway through the season. Loyola Academy As expected, Bennett Cotten didn’t look anything like a first-year player at the Class 3A state meet. The Den proved to be friendly as the LA freshman shot a two-round score of 149 to earn all-state honors (fifth place). Cotten went to Bloomington after earning medalist honors at the New Trier Sectional on Oct. 13. Lake Forest Senior Mac Montagne was a bright spot for the Scouts. He shot a team-best 152 to finish in a tie for 17th place. Lake Forest ended up in sixth place (621). Four other seniors capped off their high school careers: Quinn Gaughan (156), Sean Casey (156), Alex Georges (157) and Jack Garrity (163). Sophomore Elliot Georges shot a 158. Highland Park Senior Noah Apter, who plans to continue his golf career at Emory University, came in 40th (79-78) in the Class 3A meet. “He conducted himself with great integrity (this season),” said HP coach Scott Leibfried. ■

Runnin’ with a purpose Rosenkranz is second to none at CSL Meet ■ by kevin reiterman sports@northshoreweekend.com Josh Rosenkranz was told not to do anything outrageous. “The plan,” said the New Trier High School senior, “was to go out conservatively and then close hard.” Perfecto. “He did a phenomenal job,” said New Trier head boys cross country coach Dave Wisner. “He executed the plan perfectly.” Rosenkranz, who has emerged as the team’s No. 1 runner this fall, made his move at the halfway point and wound up claiming the Central Suburban League Championship by a wide margin on Oct. 18. With the rain coming down, Rosenkranz won the overall race by eight seconds. He completed the slippery three-mile course at Maine East High School in 15:17.98. “I told him he couldn’t make his move until the mile-and-a-half mark — and only if he felt good,” said Wisner, who watched his team take first place in the team standings with 23 points. “Well, he felt good.” It’s been that kind of season for Rosenkranz. He’s turned into a hot commodity. Rosenkranz took eighth in the First to the Finish Invite at Peoria’s Detweiller Park on Sept. 13 in an eye-catching time of 14:50.80. He placed sixth in the Wheeling Invite on Oct. 11, while he came in 11th at the Palatine Invite on Sept. 27. “The thing about Josh is that he lost his (top 7) spot in the regional last year,” Wisner said. “He didn’t run in the sectional or state.” That, as if turned out, only incentivized Rosenkranz. He found a higher gear during the 2014 track and field season — taking 3rd in the 3200 meters at the CSL South Meet and then qualifying to the state meet in the 3200. “Last year’s track season was a great

confidence booster for me,” Rosenkranz said. “It showed me that I could run with the state’s best. “Prior to that, I hadn’t considered myself (an elite runner),” he added. “Last year, I wasn’t particularly close to being the team’s No. 1 runner.” Rosenkranz is hardly a one-man show for the Trevians, who put seven runners in the top 11 at the league meet. Senior Luke Duros definitely was on top of his game. He finished the three miles in fourth place (15:33.32). “Luke had a breakout race,” said Wisner. Junior Jack Litowitz (5th, 15:35.17) and seniors Austin Santacruz (6th, 15:41.74) and Nick Merrill (7th, 15:52.93) counted in NT’s top five, while senior Josh Greenberg (10th, 16:08.06) and junior Ted Oh (11th, 16:08.06) rounded out the team’s top seven. All seven earned all-league honors. NT wound up winning the team title by 15 points over runner-up Maine South. The team moves on to the Class 3A Loyola Regional at Harms Woods on Oct. 25 (2:45 p.m.). New Trier Girls This was Mimi Smith just being Mimi Smith. The New Trier senior star won last year’s Central Suburban League race at Niles West High School by 39 seconds. On Oct. 18, in rainy and muddy conditions at Maine East, Smith cruised to a 38-second victory over Niles West runnerup Christina Mujica. Highland Park junior Charlotte Nawor, who finished fourth overall and No. 1 in the CSL North, was impressed by Smith’s current masterpiece. “Mimi is just amazing,” Nawor said of the Class 3A state champ. “I went to the state meet last year (as a fan) just to watch her.” Paced by Smith, the Trevians breezed to another CSL South title. They scored 23 points to easily beat runner-up Glenbrook South (74 points).

Drop Shots Girls Tennis New Trier Sectional: The host Trevians qualified all four entrants to state and easily won the team title in Winnetka Oct. 18. New Trier senior Laura Swenson/junior Catherine MacKinnon defeated teammates Tess Lubin (junior)/Nikki Katz (sophomore) 6-3, 6-1 in the doubles final, and junior Cammy Frei and senior Taylor Tamblyn reached the singles semifinals. In the match for third place, Frei won via injury default. NT netted 31 points to runner-up Niles North’s 14. Sisters Abby Witkowski (senior)/Caroline Witkowski (sophomore) of Loyola Academy, meanwhile, qualified for state in doubles for the second year in a row with their thirdplace finish. The siblings downed Evanston’s Jessica Ampel/Abbey Moore 6-3, 6-4 in the match for third place. Highland Park Sectional: The host school and Lake Forest tied for runner-up honors (21 points apiece) behind champion Carmel Catholic (22) on Oct. 20. Inclement weather postponed some matches on Oct. 18. Highland Park seniors Casey Frommer/Lizzie Raab defeated Lake Forest juniors Zoe Park/Brynn Carlson in the doubles championship on Oct. 20, after qualifying for state with a quarterfinal win two days earlier. HP senior doubles partners Rachel Retsky/ Jessica Rosenberg also advanced to this weekend’s state meet. Senior Colleen Morris also will represent Lake Forest’s Scouts at state. She downed Libertyville senior Halle Roach 6-4, 6-3 in the sectional match for third place in singles. The state meet was scheduled to start Oct. 23 at Buffalo Grove High School and many other sites. It concludes Oct. 25. Lake Forest and Hinsdale Central tied for the state title last fall with 39 points apiece — one point ahead of third-place New Trier. CGAC Tourney: Loyola Academy didn’t lose a match on its way to winning a conference title with 30 points. Maggie Hines and Elizabeth Nichols won No. 1 and No. 2 singles respectively. Abby Witkowski and Caroline Witkowski took first at No. 1 doubles. Annie Lawler and Nicole Morales were the winners at No. 2 doubles. Isabelle Trimble and Oriana Mejia won the No. 3 doubles crown. ■

Leaf-ing his mark: Senior Matt Mekaelian of the Scouts races to a sixth place finish at the North Suburban Conference meet. photography by joel lerner

■ by kevin reiterman sports@northshoreweekend.com The last two miles of the North Suburban Conference championship meet was an endurance test for Lake Forest High School’s Matt Mekaelian. He passed with … flying fall colors. Mekaelian, who will run next season at Xavier University in Cincinnati, didn’t win on his home course on Oct. 18, but the 5-foot10 senior proved to be one of the league’s elites. He completed the three-mile layout in 15:18.58 to finish in sixth place. “I had to push through the last two miles,” he said. “I felt my legs die after the first mile.” That wasn’t the case for Lake Zurich’s Matthew Pereira. The sophomore helped his team to a team title (43 points) by taking first in 14:44.80. He beat Stevenson senior Sam Oh by three seconds.

“Overall, Matt had a solid race, but we know that he’s got a lot more in him,” said Lake Forest coach Nathan Sweet, following his team’s sixth-place finish (155 points). “We had a hard week of practice (leading up the NSC Meet). Maybe he was not fully recovered.” Mekaelian is used to heavy workloads. He ran close to 700 miles this past summer after logging 780 in the previous offseason. A tennis player growing up, his zeal and enthusiasm for running developed during his freshman year at Lake Forest. “I had a passion for tennis … but it’s been transferred to running,” said Mekaelian, decked out in black knee socks. “It’s come together for me. By the end of my sophomore year, I had made the team’s top 12. That’s when I realized, ‘Hey, I love this.’ ” It’s likely that Mekaelian only has scratched the surface. He’s got a nice upside, considering that he was state track qualifier

in the 1600 meters (4:21.71) last spring. His best three-mile time this fall came in a dual meet against Warren: 15:05. “He’s committed and works extremely hard,” said Sweet, who watched Makaelian race to a fourth-place finish in the Lake County Art Campbell Invite on Sept. 3. “And he’s got that internal drive which makes him push harder.” Former Lake Forest star Billy Bund, a former all-stater runner who currently runs for the University of Michigan, paved the way for Mekaelian. “I know Billy had a huge influence on him,” said Sweet. “He’s been a great role model for me,” Mekaelian added. “He’s one of my best friends. He helped me develop as a runner.” Mekaelian is not the only bright star in LF’s lineup. Junior Mark Myers is the team’s other elite runner. He finished seventh at Saturday’s NSC meet in a time of 15:24.32. Earlier this fall, he took sixth in the 2014 Lake County Invite. “Matt and Mark are feeding off each other,” said Sweet. “They rely on each other. They have each other’s back.” Last fall, Myers was the team’s lone state qualifier. He took 24th-place (15:23) in the Class 2A race at Detweiller Park in Peoria. “Mark and I have been cranking out of lot of great workouts,” said Makaelian. “We pump each other up.” The No. 3 runner in the LF lineup was sophomore Etienne Najman (25th, 16:07). The other scorers included junior Richard Faller (55th) and senior Zach Streightiff (62nd). The Scouts will compete in the Class 2A regional at Antioch on Oct. 25 (10:50 a.m.). Lake Forest Girls Emma Milburn likes to start a race with a gray headband. That doesn’t mean she’ll finish with it.

“I have my rituals. I run with it for good luck. Every race,” said the Lake Forest standout. “Usually, I throw it off. But, not always.” In the NSC Meet on Oct. 18, Milburn disbanded the fabric adornment from her head around the mile mark. “I threw it to my sister,” said the LF freshman, referring to Thea Milburn, a figure skater and former distance runner at the school. As usual, Milburn threw her whole self into this race. She wound up leading the team with a ninth-place finish (18:12.23). “I didn’t feel all that well, but I’m happy with it,” Milburn said. “There were a lot of good runners in this race.” This race was filled with fabulous freshmen. Five of the top 15 were first-year varsity runners, including Libertyville’s Melissa Manetsch (1st, 17:37) and Lake Forest’s Brett Chody (15th, 18:39). The Scouts, who scored 84 points to finish behind Lake Zurich (68), Warren (89) and Libertyville (93), also received solid work from juniors Katie Condon (12th, 18:26) and Kelsey Schmidt (36th, 19:34) and seniors Hannah Flagstad (27th, 19:08) and Etta Eckerstrom (31st, 19:17). LF will compete in the Class 2A Antioch Regional on Oct. 25 (10 a.m.). Deer Path Middle School Eighth-grader Lauren Garriques captured her second straight IESA cross county crown on Oct. 18 in Normal. She cruised the two-mile course at Maxwell Park in 11:12 and won the race by nine seconds. Last year, Garriques claimed the state title in 11:31. She also was sixth as a sixthgrader in 2012. She’s not the only standout on the Lake Forest Deer Path squad. Fellow eighthgrader Courtney Schmidt came in third in 11:40. ■

Bill Kurtis and Donna La Pietra enjoy news, philanthropy, each other — and the occasional Swedish pancake ■ by ann marie scheidler When the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society launched the Local Legends series as its signature fundraising event a few years ago, the group turned to news veterans Bill Kurtis and Donna La Pietra to help produce it. “We went right to work as we always do,” explains La Pietra. “Bill was the emcee, and I put my production hat on.”

“Our goal was to break news. How could we advance the story? We wanted to establish a new tradition.” But for this year’s celebration on Saturday, Nov. 8 at Lake Forest High School (tickets are available at www.lflbhistory. org), the tables have turned. Kurtis, who questioned Jim Lovell, John Bryan and Adrian Smith at previous events, is being honored as the Local Legend — and his beloved La Pietra will be asking the questions. “Are you nervous about what I might ask?” she muses over breakfast at Egg Harbor. “Is there anything you don’t know about me?” retorts Kurtis, who always enjoys the Swedish pancake with lingonberries along with eggs at the busy Lake Forest spot. This formidable duo — who lives in Mettawa — has been

nearly inseparable since they first met in the CBS newsroom in 1974. “My first read of Bill was completely off,” remembers La Pietra. “In the beginning, I thought he was just an anchor — a guy that read the news.” It wasn’t long before she realized that Kurtis was leading a shift in the television news paradigm. “It used to be that TV news was what was written in the newspaper the day before,” Kurtis says. “Our goal was to break news. How could we advance the story? This was a newspaper approach — TV had never been thought of this way before. We wanted to establish a new tradition.” Kurtis calls his first years in the newsroom with La Pietra — a young transplant from Pittsburgh — the barn-storming days. “If you’re in before there are rules, you are left to your own motivation, and incentive, and devices — your passion and your love for what you’re doing carries you. We had the magic touch then,” he says. Adds La Pietra, “I never left the newsroom. I was 24 years old and running one of the biggest newsrooms in the country. It’s crazy to think about. We would run reports that would last 15 minutes. No one was doing that. “And Bill was absolutely fearless. He was in Saigon. Africa. Iran. He would climb trees and talk to prisoners and fly in planes that should never have left the ground. He knew what it took to tell the story. And he can still retell many of them as if they happened yesterday.”

With Kurtis’ skills as a storyteller, La Pietra’s keen and instinctual understanding of ratings, and a collection of some of the best reporters in Chicago news history — Walter Jacobsen, Johnny Morris, and Gene Siskel, to name a few — CBS News was at the top of the heap. “It wasn’t uncommon to see Muhammad Ali or John Travolta walking through our studio,” Kurtis says. “They thought nothing of being in an affiliate market. There was no CNN back then — we were reporting national stories, global stories from Chicago.” Their work during those years at CBS formed an incredible bond between Kurtis and La Pietra that was both professional and personal. “We can’t imagine not working together,” says La Pietra, who is now the CEO of Kurtis Productions, a venture that evolved into a second vibrant career for the pair. Their years in the newsroom also prepared them well for the philanthropic lives they’re leading today. “There was this sense that if you were on the airwaves, you had a responsibility to the communities you served. Bill led the way in getting himself involved in organizations —30-fold — to help them raise money and build awareness,” she says. Today, when they’re not opening their beautiful Mettawa weekend home and gardens to local organizations, they’re enjoying the serenity of the surroundings that brought them to the northern suburbs 24 years ago. “This is where we want to be,” Kurtis says. ■
