Editor’s Note Kristi Kohut at work

F

orgive me if this issue of Forest & Bluff rushes headlong into spring. I start to lose my taste for cocoa and wool sweaters every March, like clockwork. Nothing brings me more joy than the first signs of the new season—a purple crocus popping its head out of the snow, the warble of a robin, or a soccer team out on the playing field (albeit with winter hats and hand warmers). To get us over the hump, we’ve thrown all the color we can into this March issue, with extra fashion pages and such joyful feature subjects as Hapi Art, Yankee Spring Training, The Smile Loft, and the first philanthropic event of the spring season—Catholic Charity’s Art of Caring gala. We begin with the wildly creative Kristi Kohut, a Lake Forest resident, artist, and designer whose work has gone viCaleb Durbin ral—brightening spaces from Los at the plate Angeles to the TV studios at 30 Rockefeller Center in New York City. Kohut gives us a peek backstage at The Kelly Clarkson Show, where her Hapi Art graces all nine green rooms. Then we meet Lake Forest High School alumnus and former Scout baseball player, Caleb Durbin in Earning His Pinstripes. Durbin’s fast feet and powerful swing have earned him a spot in the minor leagues, working his way up in the Yankee farm system. In Brightening Hometown Smiles, we celebrate Dr. Heather Hruskocy, a Lake Forest native and founder of The Smile Loft. Hruskocy and her family recently moved back to the North Shore, where her love of medicine and art first took root. Spring philanthropy season is right around the corner. Catholic Charities leads the way with its Art of Caring Gala on April 20, detailed in Generations of Giving. If you have nothing in your closet to wear to

this and the many events to come, see F&B Loves for information about The Lake Forest Shop’s robust trunk show schedule. We sit down with Lake Forest resident, Professor Beth Clemmensen, in The Portrait this month. Clemmensen used the experience she gleaned over a long, impressive career in marketing to revamp the marketing concentration for Lake Forest College’s business department. Clemmenson gives us a peek into campus life and offers her recommendations around town. Finally, we have a chat with Katie Fitzpatrick, head of Fitzpatrick School of Irish Dance, and mom of three, in The Last Word. With St. Patrick’s Day on the horizon this month, she reflects on her “Irishness” and how her work helps connect the next generation of Irish Americans to their culture. I hope this colorful issue is the harbinger of sweet things to come. Happy March!

Community Champion Lake Forest College marketing professor and long-time resident Beth Clemmensen recalls the series of events that brought her to the city she now so proudly calls home.

Ragdale House, photo by James Caulfield

edited by Sherry Thomas / photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa DeMaria / hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

O

What hidden gems in the area do you recommend the most? One of my favorite local spots is La Plancha Loca in Highwood. Their street tacos are the best! I also love Smith’s Men’s store.

ne of Beth Clemmensen’s earliest memories of Lake Forest is visiting from the western suburbs. “I would drive up with my mom to shop at Market Square,” says Clemmensen, a former Kraft marketing executive who is currently revamping the marketing curriculum as a professor at Lake Forest College. “We’d go to the Talbots store and grab lunch at The Lantern to make a day of it.” The impression of that bucolic downtown stayed with her. So, when she and husband, Christopher, were debating where to settle and raise their family 26 years ago, Lake Forest was back on her radar. “Shortly before we married, he took a job in brand marketing with SC Johnson in Racine, Wisconsin,” she explains. “I was working in brand marketing for Kraft Foods in Glenview. As we looked at a map, Lake Forest was a good midpoint between our jobs, and I remembered what a cute town it was.” Clemmensen says they loved raising their two boys, Connor and Andrew, in Lake Forest and being involved in their schools and activities. In addition to serving as room mom and numerous APT positions at both Deer Path Middle School and Cherokee Elementary, she was elected by the community to the District 67 School Board, where she served as the board Vice President and was a member of the executive board of the Lake Three books that have Forest High School Foundation, where she helped to enhance their marketing. Today, influenced you? The Bible. I did Community Bible Study in Lake Clemmensen continues to give back to the next generation of marketers at Lake Forest Forest for 20 years and it was College. She is also a fierce advocate of the community. “The people in Lake Forest and life changing. Second would be Lake Bluff are the best! They are so willing to give of their time and talents,” she says, add- Ultra-Prevention by Dr. Mark Hyman and third would be ing that the breadth of offerings in Lake Forest and Lake Bluff is second to none. “Think The Left Behind series by Tim about everything we have right in our town. From Lake Forest Hospital and Lake Forest LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. College to the beach, Gorton Center, CROYA, the Rec Center, Grove Cultural Campus, Ragdale, Lake Forest Open Lands, Elawa Farm ... and that’s just to name a few. Each of these places provided my kids with amazing opportunities and experiences.” Here are a few more of her favorite things: What is your favorite restaurant in Lake Forest or Lake Bluff and what is your go-to order? The Gallery. We love that the menu changes with the art. What Chicago restaurant do you always go to when you’re in the city? RL. What hidden gems in the area do you recommend the most? One of my favorite local spots is La Plancha Loca in Highwood. Their street tacos are the best! I also love Smith’s Men’s store. What is one thing most people don’t know about Lake Forest College? Students come from all over the U.S. and 80 different countries. There are almost 1,800 students on campus and about one-third are students of color and 18 percent are international. Additionally, many of our students are from economically disadvantaged backgrounds and are first generation college students. Last TV show you binged? The Chosen and Ted Lasso. Favorite brand to follow? Studio McGee and Magnolia Home are favorite decorating brands, but I also find lots of cool “unknown” decorators on Pinterest. Favorite ad campaign? Dove Campaign for Real Beauty. It fundamentally changed how women looked at the beauty industry and themselves. Three books that have Beauty products you can’t live without? Mighty Plump Ceramide influenced you? The Bible. I did Community Bible Study in Lake Forest for 20 years and it was life Beautycounter’s Water Cream (any product that I can changing. Second would be Ultra-Prevention by Dr. Mark Hyman and third would be The Left Behind see results after one use is a keeper) series by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. What do you listen to on your Airpods? My son made me a and their Beyond Gloss in Peony (it’s the perfect shade of pink). Lollapalooza Apple playlist with my favorite songs from attending Lolla over several years. I also like The Doctor’s Farmacy podcast with Dr. Mark Hyman Beauty products you can’t live without? Beautycounter’s Mighty Plump Ceramide Water Cream (any product that I can see results after one use is a keeper) and their Beyond Gloss in Peony (it’s the perfect shade of pink). What’s on your bucket list for 2024? I want to start by channeling my inner Marie Kondo and getting rid of stuff. We have a lot of things to be “thanking for their service” as we sort through my in-laws’ things and our own clutter! Favorite influencers/accounts to follow on social media? Joanna Gaines, Studio McGee, The Home Edit, HGTV, the Rambling Redhead, Mind Body Green, Natural Nurse Mom, Dr. Mark Hyman, and Whole 30. Celebrity you’d like to have dinner with? Malcolm Gladwell. I love his books. 26 FOREST & B LUF F

THE DISH

CREAMY BROCCOLI, CHEDDAR & HAM SOUP words, photography, and recipe by Monica Kass Rogers

W

hen you have a meaty ham bone in the fridge, first thoughts for how best to use it go to split pea soup. But, since nobody in my household actually likes split peas, I turned my thoughts to ham-enhanced dishes they love. Broccoli, ham, and cheddar quiche heads that list. Why not make

a soup with those delicious flavors? This, then, is the tasty result—even better in my opinion, than the quiche that inspired it. I did add one special ingredient—half a pound of mushrooms. Blended with caramelized onion, the mushrooms add even more depth and creaminess to the finished soup. Served with a nice loaf of crusty bread for dunking, this makes a very satisfying meal.

METHOD In a heavy-bottomed soup pot over medium-high heat add chicken stock and ham bone. Add water to cover bone. Cut one of the onions in half, leaving skin on and add to pot with 1 bay leaf. Heat to boiling then reduce heat to medium low and simmer, for a half hour. Measure 2 cups of the raw small broccoli florets into a microwaveable bowl. Add ½ cup water. Cover and microwave for 3 minutes. Drain liquid and set aside. Place any remaining raw florets into the bowl of chopped raw broccoli stem pieces. Add ½ cup water. Cover and microwave for 3 minutes. Drain liquid and set aside. In a deep pan or Dutch oven over medium low heat add olive oil and the 1-½ cups chopped onion. Cook until translucent and very soft. Add mushrooms, salt and pepper and continue cooking until mushrooms have released their liquid and some of the liquid has cooked off. Scoop into a bowl and puree mushrooms and onions using an immersion

blender. Set aside. Wipe out Dutch oven and place back on cooktop over medium heat. Melt butter and whisk in flour to make a roux. Slowly whisk in milk until smooth, thickened, and creamy. Remove from heat. Whisk in grated cheese to make a very thick sauce. Set aside. Remove ham bone, onion, and bay leaf from soup pot. Working cup by cup, slowly whisk ¾ of the stock into the cheese sauce. Add the onion/ mushroom puree and whisk again. Add the bowl of cooked broccoli stems plus ½ of the cooked florets from the floret bowl. Blend soup with immersion blender until broccoli is broken up well. At this point, add as much of the remaining stock as you wish to the soup to reach the consistency you like. Stir in the remaining cooked florets. Stir in the bite-sized ham pieces. Ladle soup into bowls and serve hot with crusty bread.

SERVES 6 INGREDIENTS 1 quart low-sodium • chicken stock • 1 meaty ham bone, meat trimmed off and cut into small pieces • 3 small yellow onions, 1 kept whole, 2 diced to make 1 ½ cups chopped • 1 bay leaf • 3 large broccoli crowns, stems trimmed and cut into small pieces in one microwaveable bowl; crowns cut into very small florets in a second microwaveable bowl • 2 Tbsp olive oil • 8 oz button or crimini mushrooms, diced to make 2 ½ cups • 2 Tbsp butter • 2 Tbsp flour • 1 cup milk • 2 cups grated sharp white cheddar cheese • 1 tsp kosher salt • 1 tsp freshly ground black pepper

Make Your Own Luck Five ways to charm your brain into peak performance words by Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa DeMaria

I

Dr. Elizabeth Lombardo

t’s March, and that means three things: St. Patrick’s Day, basketball brackets, and how much luck will play a role in both. As a sports psychologist, I know that when games hang in the balance, it isn’t physical prowess—or leprechauns—that tip the scales. It comes down to which player and team have the mental edge necessary to bring home the gold.

thought. Established, honed, and repeated, the most powerful pregame rituals incorporate visualization exercises, physical warm-ups intertwined with mental focus, and personal practices that create a sense of familiarity and control. There is no one-size-fits-all formula here—with coaching, every athlete discovers what works best for them.

Managing pressure: Luck favors the prepared (mind) No matter what game you play, stress is a formidable opponent. Whether you are a golfer facing a championship putt… a basketball player lining up for a game-winning free throw shot… or a sprinter facing off against the finish line… What determines success isn’t just the read of the green, the controlled release of the wrist, or the explosive bolt off the blocks—it’s what goes through your mind in the moments just before. During high stress, your body naturally wants to tense up, guard your breathing, and look for escape routes—none of which will help you clinch the title. Optimizing the energy in your body and brain in these moments is critical, and this means practicing intentional control—increasing calm, positive energy and releasing distress. Controlled breathing exercises can be a game-changer here!

Picturing success: Building stronger visualizations You may have heard that visualization is a performance enhancer, but many athletes do it incorrectly or haphazardly. True visualization takes experienced guidance and practice. I often have clients work through a specific part of their practice in slow motion, training their brains to focus on the tiny muscle movements that make up a free throw or a smooth putting stroke. Coupled with positive self-talk and Neuro-Regenerative Training, visualization is a powerful and proven technique that enhances confidence, performance, and results.

Settling setbacks: Turning failure into feedback After a devastating loss in a major tournament, a tennis prodigy I worked with found herself questioning her abilities—even though she had defeated opponents with twice as many years in the game. In our work together, she retrained her brain to loosen her emotional hold on failure and view each loss as an opportunity for learning and improvement. She also learned how to build a strong support system to get much-needed encouragement, support, and perspective.

Staying present: Today is (always) your lucky day With constant distractions and packed schedules, staying present is difficult for most people, let alone busy athletes who are always prepping for the next competition. If your mind wanders during critical moments, you aren’t alone—or helpless. Your brain simply needs additional training to filter out the noise and fully focus on the task at hand. Mindset training exercises and breathing techniques will keep you fully engaged and performing at your best. In the high-stakes world of sports, where split-second decisions can define a career, a team, and a season, top athletes know they must train their minds alongside their muscles. From recovering from setbacks to establishing powerful pre-game routines, investing in your mental edge gives you a competitive advantage—and making your own lucky streak.

Revving routines: Creating a powerful pre-game ritual Most successful athletes I know have a pre-performance routine Don’t leave your performance up to chance. Start training your mind that allows them to fuel peak performance almost without a second at elevive.com. 40 FOREST & B LUF F

Collector’s Corner

At Auction

Zack Wirsum, Vice President and Head of Department, for Post War and Contemporary Art at Freeman’s | Hindman previews exciting artwork offered at auction this spring. Words by Zack Wirsum

Louise Nevelson (American, 1899-1988) | Untitled, c. 1976-78 $150,000 - $250,000

In signature Nevelson fashion, Untitled (c. 1976-78) defies dimensional classification by equitably and effectively occupying the realms of both painting and sculpture. Uniformly coated in her hallmark unmodulated black paint, it is the considered arrangement of the geometric structural elements and the shadow play they generate that activate the composition of this wall hanging relief to draw the viewer into the powerful and pleasing picture plane. The scale and the orientation of the work read as a complex futuristic monolith covered in coded circuitry or as a stately door adorned in alien hieroglyphs waiting to be opened to reveal a portal to a compelling and expansive creative world of Nevelson’s design.

Al Held (American, 1928-2005) | Stereo III, 1975 $80,000 $120,000 Stereo III (1975) is an

extraordinary example of Al Held’s masterful hard-edge abstraction and economic minimalist approach employed at peak power. Perhaps taking a cue from the title, this two-tone painting slickly pairs a flatly applied white background with decisive yet delicate black linework in a cleverly choreographed dance of positive and negative shapes that visually evokes a sense of a schematics for a sound system resonating deeply across all frequencies. Cool and clean without being cold, the painting invitingly pulls you in while dually surrounding you with high fidelity gesture and form.

Larry Poons (American, b. 1937) | Untitled, 1976 $50,000 - $70,000

Under Larry Poons’ direction and influence, gravitational physics and natural material movement create a heavy, abstract downpour of thick acrylic, painterly and visceral in Untitled (1976). The chunky, cascading bands of color, ranging from the pronounced bold yellow to the complementary whispers of violet and purple, both capture the painting process and form the final product as concept and construct on this long, narrow canvas. In the upper portion of the painting, speckled spatters of orange and brief glimpses of base layer white punctate the vertical rhythms allowing breaks in the expressive action.

Gertrude Abercrombie (American, 1909-1977) | Giraffe and Moon with Volcano (Giraffe and Volcano #2), 1951 $50,000 - $70,000

Marvelous and mysterious, as we would expect from the affectionately annotated “Jazz Witch,” Gertrude Abercrombie, Giraffe and Volcano #2 (1951) depicts an impossibly long-necked giraffe extending upward to kissing distance of a crescent moon in a lonely, surreal dreamscape flanked by a smoldering volcano and a solitary stone, at once out of place and eerily familiar. All or any of the elements are potential surrogate symbolic stand-ins for the artist; herself no stranger to isolation, otherworldly positioning, and the embrace of the magical night. The giraffe, more exotic than Abercrombie’s standard signifiers of the cat or the owl, surely appealed to her for the animal’s majestic yet awkward appearance, a contradiction aligned with her own self-image. As the giraffe is iconically featured ablaze in Salvador Dali’s masterpiece Inventions of the Monsters owned by the Art Institute of Chicago in Abercrombie’s hometown, her use of the beast could be a nod to one of the foundational figures of Surrealism. The Post War and Contemporary Art department will present a live and online auction on April 24, with bidding beginning at 10 a.m. Bidding is available via Hindman’s Digital Bid Room, bid.hindmanauctions.com or the Hindman app. For more information, contact Zack Wirsum at 312280-1212 or zacharywirsum@hindmanauctions.com.

Divorce – Should You Keep or Sell the House?

During divorce, deciding whether to sell your home and divide the assets or keep it in the newly divided family can be one of the most contentious decisions. words by Michone J. Riewer photography by Katrina Wittkamp styling by Theresa Demaria hair & makeup by Leanna Ernest

determine the value of the house. They can agree to use a website like Redfin or Zillow or a current market analysis from a local realtor to determine the house’s worth. If they do not agree on the value, they can get an appraisal from a certified real estate appraiser. Each party is entitled to half of the home’s equity in the divorce. If the parties are unable to come to an agreement on the value of the home, and therefore the equity in it, the court will most likely order that it be sold. If one party keeps the house, they are responsible for compensating the other party for their share. This can be done by giving the spouse a different asset of a similar value, splitting checking or savings accounts differently, or paying the other spouse in another way. Additionally, the party keeping the house will need to refinance, removing their spouse from the mortgage and the deed within a reasonable amount of time.

N ARTIST KRISTI KOHUT’S Hapi Art studio, all that glitters is much more than gold. Ribbons of rainbow, fantasy florals, and creative collages glimmer and glisten in a multi-hued, sparkledusted array. Retaining the joy of her childhood prism on the world, Kohut’s artistic creations—from paintings and collages to luxurious pillows, poufs, fabrics, and wall coverings, are a hot commodity. Featured everywhere from Forbes and Architectural Digest to Elle Décor, Kohut’s cheerful aesthetic, plus her “make art accessible” mantra have catapulted her into place as one of the top-selling independent female artists in the country. And all of this is the Lake Forest resident’s second career. Leaving a position as an art director for a global advertising agency when her son was born in 2007, Kohut picked up a brush and started painting. “I’d always connected to the world of color and art,” she says, “but when young, just didn’t fully believe I could make a career of it.” Honing her craft for the next several years, Kohut’s studio soon filled wall to wall with canvases. At that point, “I knew art was my true calling,” she says. From the start of this new endeavor, Kohut set out to make the process of collecting art more inviting. Believing that the high-end art world had been an intimidating, inaccessible market for far too long, Kohut made the decision to sell her original art online. “I went right where the rest of the art world had been resisting and started selling my art directly to collectors and consumers,” says Kohut, who connects with the masses through Instagram, her website, and various media outlets. In one click, someone can browse her work, connect with Kohut or one of her team members, become a collector, or commission a piece of art.

That personable, direct approach has garnered her a loyal following. Of her 32.6K Instagram followers, roughly 25 percent have purchased art, with many avid collectors among the group. Of these, “some really have become a part of my journey and are building a collection of art that spans the breadth of the different styles and series I work in,” she says. Among the fans? Singer, songwriter, and talk-show host Kelly Clarkson. Prior to the start of The Kelly Clarkson Show’s first season in Los Angeles, Clarkson’s creative director introduced her to Kohut’s art. “She immediately loved it,” says Kohut, explaining that she was then tapped to give one of Clarkson’s Los

When the show relocated to New York City at 30 Rock last year, Kohut was asked to design all nine of the green rooms and invited to be a guest on the show’s new season premiere. “I really enjoyed working with Kelly and her team,” says Kohut, “so I was thrilled with the opportunity to make the move with the team to their new home and to transform, not just one, but nine green rooms for Clarkson’s celebrity guests.” 52 FOREST & BLUF F

With nine to work with, Kohut sought to make the look of each room completely different. To start, Kohut chose a unique wallpaper or mural for each space, sequencing the room designs in a progression that made sense “as you walked down the hallway and peered into each room,” she recalls. From there, she added a selection of her artwork to fit each room’s look, plus bright throw pillows for pops of color and whimsy. Some of her favorite design elements? “The Kintsugi wall mural,” she says, “it really envelops you as you walk in. I also love the mirrored flower wallpaper—one of my newest creations.” The reveal of Kohut’s green rooms and her appearance on the show has created a lot of buzz. “We are talking to some pretty interesting people about some upcoming projects,” she hints. Beyond this, Kohut’s 2024 will include doing what she loves most—painting and working with a group of collectors who have commissioned pieces for homes all over the globe. Her most recent releases are created with elements like cut-glass glitter and glossy iridescent acrylic. These play with light and reflection, transforming paintings into immersive 3D art experiences that

she describes as “emotionally resonant and inviting you to feel as if you’re an integral part of the artwork itself.” “From the time I was a little girl, I have felt a passion and love for creating art,” she says, adding that embracing this love as her new career has been beyond fulfilling. “Bigger and better than I ever could have imagined.” For more information about her work or the Hapi Art studio, visit hapiart.com.

Caleb Durbin

56 FOREST & BLUF F

FB_0324_Main.indd 56

2/19/24 11:28 AM

Earning His Pinstripes Lake Bluff native Caleb Durbin’s rare, inspiring baseball journey—from Division III collegiate baseball player to bona fide New York Yankees prospect—shows no signs of stalling. Chosen 427th overall by the Atlanta Braves in the 2021 Draft, he’s only two call-ups away from making it to “The Show.” words by Bill McLean photography by by Runvijay Paul styling by Theresa DeMaria

N

EW YORK YANKEES middle-infielder prospect and former Lake Forest High School diamond gem Caleb Durbin aims to do more than sip “a cup of coffee”—baseball-ese for “get a few at-bats” or “play a couple of innings”—in the major leagues. He has set his sights on chugging vats and vats of java, for years and years, and making Major League Baseball pitchers feel jittery each time he plants his 5-foot-7, 185-pound frame into a batter’s box. “I’m trying to become the best professional baseball player I can be,” says Durbin, a 2018 Lake Forest High School (LFHS) alumnus who suited up for New York’s Double-A affiliate, the Somerset (New Jersey) Patriots of the Eastern League, last summer and then had a helmeted-head-turning Arizona Fall League season as a member of the Mesa Solar Sox. “I believe I have the potential to be a pretty good major league baseball player,” the Lake Bluff native adds. “I’m focused on reaching that by working with my coaches, listening to them, and doing whatever I can to improve each step of the way.” It’s impossible not to root, root, root for the 24-yearold Durbin. He played NCAA Division III baseball at Washington University in St. Louis for three seasons (2019-2021), batting .385 and driving in 47 runs in the Bears’ Final Four season in 2021. He gloved a degree

in Economics, and, while pocketing early minor-league bucks, earned a WashU Certificate in Business. Scholarships at D-III schools are based on lofty GPAs, not busy OBAs (on-base averages). A D-III grad deftly handling Double-A fastballs and off-speed pitches— only two years after getting drafted by the Atlanta Braves (14th round, 427th overall pick)—is an unfazed Pop Warner running back eluding a linebacker taken in the first round of the NFL Draft. “Teammates of mine have asked me, ‘Where did you play college baseball?’” Durbin says. “When I tell them, they’re shocked. I chose Washington University because of its excellent academic and baseball reputations. I watched a baseball practice on my visit to the campus, liked what I saw, and I trusted (WU Bears baseball coach) Pat Bloom, who’s known for placing his players in the best summer leagues and for helping them get opportunities at the next level.” Former LFHS baseball assistant and volunteer assistant coach David Holmes, a 2008 LFHS graduate, isn’t stunned at all at Durbin’s steady climb on the rungs of the minor leagues. “Caleb has a crazy-high baseball IQ and quiet confidence,” says Holmes, who, as a Denison (Ohio) University outfielder/pitcher, first started working with Durbin at local ball fields in the summer of 2009. “Loves to work hard, loves baseball. To me, he already has a big-league, middle-infield glove to go with his FO REST & BLUFF 57

“My parents molded me into the the type of person I am today...” great eye at the plate. Those who doubt a player with a DIII background in baseball could make it in the big leagues haven’t seen Caleb take batting practice or ground balls. “I’m not surprised Caleb is doing as well as he is in pro ball; anybody who knows him feels the same way. And I’m feeling chills right now as I think about where he’ll end up in baseball. He proved he belonged among the elite prospects years ago in summer leagues. Caleb stood out while playing against Big Ten, Big 12, and SEC (Southeastern Conference) players.” Durbin played for High-A affiliate Hudson Valley (Fishkill, New York) and Double-A Somerset in 2023, batting a combined .304 with an OBA of .395 and an on-base percentage plus slugging percentage (OPS) of .822. Splendid numbers, all of them. Atlanta had traded him to New York in December 2022. His game soared during the 2023 Arizona Fall Durbin as a League season. He needed LFHS Scout only 23 games to steal a near-record 21 bases, with three of the thefts coming in a November 8 game in which he went 3-for-3 at the plate. Some of his final AFL stats: .353 batting average, .456 OBA, 1.045 OPS, nine doubles, and 12 runs batted in. But those bedazzling numbers pale in comparison to seven—the puny number of times Durbin struck out in 103 plate appearances. Eagles, bald or otherwise, covet Durbin’s sharp eye at the plate. So did at least one Atlanta Braves scout, who fell in love with Durbin’s plate discipline over a 40-game stretch at WashU. Pitchers fanned Durbin only twice in the lengthy span. Durbin’s very first pro at-bat—with the Florida Complex League Braves in 202—resulted in a well-earned walk. “I worked it,” recalls Durbin, the 11th-toughest Division III batter to strike out in his freshman season. “As I’m nearing first base, I’m thinking, ‘Oh, my, I’m about to get on base in a pro game.’ I also thought back to my days in Division III baseball and then looked around and realized where I was. Nerves faded after that. I felt settled in, relieved. “But the best part of that day,” he continues, “was later

Caleb Durbin playing with Yankee minor league team, the Somerset Patriots

scoring a run on my teammate’s bases-clearing double.” Typical Durbin: team first, me dead last. The top highlight of his LFHS baseball career had nothing to do with one of his at-bats and everything to do with teammate Cal Coughlin’s aluminum stick. Durbin was a sophomore at the time, on second base in the bottom of the seventh and final inning of a playoff game. A Scout stood on first base and another was on third. Coughlin then knocked them all in with a walk-off grand slam. “That was my most memorable high school moment in sports, easily, since nothing else came close to reaching the excitement level after winning a game like that,” Durbin, a four-year varsity wrestler at LFHS, says. “All I wanted to do was win.” His mindset as an athlete hasn’t changed a bit, not even a synapse. A son of an ex-Northwestern University wrestler (Regis Sr.) and brother of another former NU grappler (Regis, a prep state wrestling champ at 195 pounds, in 2014), the competitive-to-the-bone Caleb will be forever grateful for having grown up in a super-supportive household that also included his mother, Diane, and his older sister, Reanna. “My parents molded me into the type of person I am today,” Durbin says. “They pushed me, encouraged me, to try different things. It’s been a blessing, my family. Dad was always there for me in my younger years, pitching to me at parks and helping in other ways. His shoulder doesn’t work so well now, but he continues to work with me (at 5 Tool Baseball and Softball in Vernon Hills). Plus, he’ll never stop watching a ton of baseball videos online.” Caleb Durbin won’t know until after Spring Training 2024 where the Yankees will assign him. Could be Double-A, could be Triple-A. That’s a decision that’s out of his reliable infielder’s hands. What’s in them: today. Another day to get better at baseball, to keep climbing.

BRIGHTENING HOMETOWN SMILES

Lake Forest native Dr. Heather Hruskocy returns to her hometown with a young family in tow and opens The Smile Loft. words and photography by Monica Kass Rogers styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

T

HREE-YEAR-OLD PENELOPE skips to the playroom in the Wynn family’s Lake Forest home and plunks her pretend First Aid kit on the table. Little sister Chloe, toddling like a downyheaded duckling, follows right behind. Within minutes, a tiny plush kitten and ailing plush puppy with a cone around its neck have received lots of care. Turn the clock backward to see their mom, Dr. Heather Hruskocy, in her early years, and you’d have witnessed much the same. “Yes!” laughs Hruskocy, who recently opened her own dental practice, The Smile Loft, fulfilling a lifelong dream. “My mom was a nurse and my Dad is an anesthesiologist, so my interest in medicine was sparked at a very young age.” Eldest of four siblings, Hruskocy attended the School of St. Mary and Lake Forest High School where she excelled in science. From there, she went on to earn a bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin and a Doctor of Dental Medicine degree (DMD) from Southern Illinois University’s School of Dental Medicine. In spending her first college summer working with her dad at Lutheran General Hospital, she was intrigued by the stories from patients at the hospital and the stories he would share about the operating room. This sparked the flame of interest that would lead her to explore all health care fields throughout her schooling, including working at multiple dental offices. Ultimately, Hruskocy chose dentistry

for its mix of science, medicine, and artistry. The field also gave talented practitioners the chance at becoming a business owner, which appealed to her. That she would launch her own new practice within weeks of birthing her second child and buying a house in Lake Forest sounded impossible, but believing the opportunity was right for her family, Hruskocy did it.

“It just made sense for so many reasons,” she says. “The great schools, safety, proximity to the city, and my familiarity with the community I grew up in ... all of that, plus, having found the perfect space for my office. But it was a very stressful year! Hruskocy signed paperwork for The Smile Loft construction/lease/loan in February 2022 and Chloe was born March 28. Three days later, her family closed on their home. The Smile Loft was officially open to see patients November 1. She says none of it would have been possible without the support of her husband, Doug, a risk systems manager at Kirkland & Ellis law firm in Chicago who she describes as very “go with the flow.” “I basically told him I was pregnant, wanted to move to Lake Forest, and wanted to open my own dental office all in one sentence,” Hruskocy adds. “He just looked at me and said, ‘let’s do it!’” Now into her second year at The Smile Loft, she says many of her clients remember her from her childhood in Lake Forest, which adds to their comfort level in seeing a new dentist. “Fear of going to the dentist can come from so many things; a traumatic childhood dental experience, for example, or a fear of needles,” explains Hruskocy, who works to assuage those fears and other common situations, including embarrassment about lack of dental hygiene. “Almost weekly I will have a mom come in and get emotional because she hasn’t had any time to take care of her teeth. I can relate to these patients and never judge their situation because I have been there myself. Taking things slow and spending the time to address a patients’ concerns thoughtfully can really help.” As a general dentistry office offering family and cosmetic

dentistry, The Smile Loft primarily sees adult patients, with a growing number of families with children coming in. About 50 percent of the procedures are cosmetic. “My absolute favorite thing is to make someone comfortable with their smile!” says Hruskocy. “There are so many people walking around who hesitate to ask if something can be fixed, not realizing how simple some cosmetic procedures can be. I had two patients just this week tell me they never smile because they don’t like their teeth and by the end of their appointments, they left smiling from ear to ear—which is exactly how it should be!” For more information on Dr. Heather Hruskocy’s general and cosmetic dentistry, visit lfsmileloft.com. Generations of Giving The Catholic Charities Women’s Board of Lake County is hosting its signature fundraiser, Art of Caring, on Saturday, April 20—highlighting the generations of families who support their mission. words by Ann Marie Scheidler photography by Runvijay Paul styling by Theresa DeMaria hair and makeup by Margareta Komlenac

ROM THE TIME CAROLE SANDNER’S children were young, giving back to others was part of their family’s mission. “I used to visit the post office in Chicago and go through their letters to Santa,” Sandner remembers. “I would just sit there on the floor and read letter after letter about what these children would hope Santa would bring their families. I usually would pick five different families with lots of children and then my kids and I would go and shop for them. Then right before Christmas, our whole family—my husband, the kids, even our babies—would go down to the poorest areas and deliver the gifts. Making these connections is something none of us will ever forget. These families welcomed us into their homes and often thanked us with something they had made. Those Christmases when we could be there all together with these families were the best.” Getting to know a nonprofit in such a hands-on way is one of the many reasons the Sandner Family aligned itself with Catholic Charities, an organization that serves those in need, regardless of faith, race, gender, or ethnicity. “Everyone can give back in some simple, humble way,” Sandner says. “What I have always loved about Catholic Charities is that there are so many opportunities for how you can be involved. You can chair a benefit or buy bikes or serve a meal. It’s a wonderful organization to be involved in with your family.” On Saturday, April 20, the Catholic Charities Women’s Board of Lake County is hosting its signature fun-

draiser, Art of Caring, at 300 N. Green Bay Road in Lake Forest. It will be an evening featuring cocktails, dinner, a live auction, and dancing to the music of Blue Water Kings. The event is being chaired by the Women’s Board President Carolyn Milligan and long-time board member Heather Kotlarz. Art of Caring raises critical funding for much of the programming Catholic Charities offers to the underserved in Lake County. “This year, we want to emphasize the power of giving and how we’re inspiring the next generation to get involved and carry on the important work of Catholic Charities,” Milligan says. “We’re so lucky to have the Sanders as part of our community of giving. The need for Catholic Charities is growing in Lake County and it’s important to know that by involving our families in this work, we’ll be able to continue serving those who need our help the most.” Sandner has chaired Art of Caring in the past with her daughter Angela and her daughter-in-law Kathleen. And today, her granddaughter Kara is often in tow when the family is volunteering. “You just can’t do enough,” Sandner says. “You want to do more and more and more. And more is never enough. Our best hope is that our kids will continue the work that we’ve all been doing. It’s been one of my biggest joys to give back alongside my family.” To learn more about the work of the Women’s Board of Catholic Charities or to purchase a ticket or sponsorship for Art of Caring, visit catholiccharities.net/events/art-ofcaring. Globally Inspired, Forester Rooted Oaken Bistro + Bar’s menu by new chef is inventive yet rooted in classics. words and photography by Monica Kass Rogers

P

roudly situated within The Forester, the boutique hotel concept by Hyatt Place that has brought a breath of fresh air to Lake Forest as the first hotel to open in nearly a century, Oaken Bistro + Bar would seem to most to be a typical hotel dining experience. From first bite, however, both hotel guests and neighbors alike have quickly learned that the experience is anything but ordinary. Exceeding expectations on the culinary scene in the age of the “foodie” is no small feat, but with new Executive Chef Christian Alejandro at the helm, it’s set as the standard for this North Shore destination. Whether shaping satisfying new brunch offerings, or vibrantly flavored dinner creations, Alejandro sets the culinary bar high. Born and raised in Puerto Rico, with his culinary degree in International Culinary Arts and years spent in New Orleans, means the dishes Alejandro creates hit the sweet spot in Oaken’s globally influenced American bistro theme. Take for example Alejandro’s bone-in chicken breast with charred scallion risotto, poblano supreme sauce, grilled lemon, chive oil, and toasted breadcrumbs. First featured as a limited-time Oaken entrée of the month, the dish had “just the right amount of kick and our guests could not get enough of it,” says Alejandro. “So, we added it to the daily lunch and dinner menu and now they can enjoy it whenever they visit.” In step with Oaken’s rich woodcloaked contemporary design—befitAtlantic Salmon with ting the beauty of silky potato puree, wild Lake Forest’s natumushrooms, and beurre rouge ral habitat—the restaurant’s dinner menu sections are aptly dubbed as “Saplings” (lighter fare), salads, “Timber” (mains), “Seedlings” (sides), and desserts. From the light offerings, Alejandro’s Beef Tenderloin Empanadas with chimichurri, lemon, and tomato sauce are the most popular. Atlantic Salmon with silky potato puree, wild mushrooms, and beurre rouge takes the top spot in the mains, with truffle fries dunked in chimichurri aioli as the can’t-get-enough snacking favorite. And for dessert? Guests love the coconut crème brûlée. Keenly aware of the need to balance proteins, vegetarian, and glu-

ten-free options to meet guest preferences and dietary needs, Alejandro and his team at Oaken have ensured that most menu items have a gluten-free option, as well as including plenty of vegetarian options. The gorgeously hued and flavorful Late Harvest Salad— one of three gluten-free, vegan salads currently on offer, is a popular toss of nutty farro, sweetly roasted carrot, parsnips, and beets, with apricots, pistachios, and whipped ricotta. Becoming integrated with and adding fun to the Lake Forest community is a top priority at Oaken. To keep things fun and fresh, Oaken is constantly adding new events. The Oaken Weekday Happy Hour, and Friday night live music, for example, are year-round offerings that change with the season. “We’re always doing fun seasonally themed events that tie to local businesses and guests,” says Alejandro, “such as the Valentine’s Day Calligraphy Class we did with Sip & Script, the winter mixology class we offered, and our participation in February’s Lake County Restaurant Week with a special three-course prix fixe menu.” Upping the ante this month, Oaken launches two exciting new offers to welcome Lake Foresters. “During the entire month of March, we are offering 50 percent off your meal to all diners who mention this article,” Alejandro explains. Available breakfast, lunch, dinner, or brunch on all food items (tax, gratuity, and alcohol not included) the offer also includes a Fill a Heart for Kids give-back component. Diners can either choose to apply the 50 percent discount to their meal or donate the 50 percent to Fill a Heart for Kids, a Lake Forest based organization that provides resources to unhoused, at-risk, and foster children. Also, this month, Oaken is pleased to unveil its new Oaken Rewards Club. As with other loyalty programs, participants earn points for dining at Oaken; one point for every $1 spent. Once rewards club members reach 250 points, they’ll earn an extra $25 credit plus fun freebies on birthdays and anniversaries. To encourage participation, Oaken is kicking off the program with a special $25 bonus just for signing up. “As my first time working under the Hyatt umbrella, it’s been an incredible experience to dive in with a property as unique as The Forester,” Alejandro concludes. “I love cooking and providing the best experience to our diners and have found the same driving force within the team here at Oaken. We look forward to seeing you here!” For more information on Oaken Bistro + Bar or to sign up for the Oaken Rewards Club please visit oakenbistro.com.

PLASTIC SURGERY UPDATE TUMMY TUCK

words by Steven Bloch, M.D.

O

ne of the most frequent requests that I get is for a “Tummy Tuck.” Many patients find that despite diet and exercise they cannot achieve the shaped, toned, flat abdomen they desire. In assessing a patient for a “Tummy Tuck” multiple factors are taken into account. 1. What is the status of the overlying skin and the degree of laxity? Is the laxity confined to the lower or upper part of the abdomen or both? 2. What is the status of the underlying muscles? Do they meet in the midline or are they separated from pregnancies or intra-abdominal fat? 3. What is the distribution of excess fat? Is it diffuse or localized in the lower upper abdomen? Does it extend to the flanks? Depending upon the above assessment a customized operation can be performed to address these concerns. Multiple procedures or techniques can be employed. The procedures vary from non-invasive to full abdominoplasty or some combination. Methods include: 1. Non-invasive CoolSculpting or CoolTone. 2. Minimally invasive BodyTite or Renuvion for skin tightening. 3. Vaser liposuction for fat reduction. 4. Modified abdominoplasty for the lower abdomen. 5. Full abdominoplasty combining liposuction, repositioning umbilicus, skin tightening, and underlying muscle repair. The above procedures can often be combined to give you a customized operation to achieve the results you desire.

The Last Word

PLUCK OF THE IRISH

Lake Forest resident Katie Fitzpatrick is bringing her love of Ireland to the North Shore through the Fitzpatrick School of Irish Dance (FSID). The community is invited to see FSID dancers and celebrate Irish culture at a free St. Patrick’s Day Ceili and party at Gorton Center on March 17.

‘T

is the land of scholars and saints, poets and rebels. And yet one of the mysteries of Ireland is how many find a sense of home in its storied culture and history, even if they have no ancestral connection at all. It’s a sort of magic, you might say. That’s how Katie Fitzpatrick describes this sense of “Irishness” she’s felt all her life and that she sees in the young people she teaches at Fitzpatrick School of Irish Dance (FSID). “My Irish roots extend to my great-great grand-

words by Sherry Thomas illustration by Tom Bachtell parents, Michael Devine and Mary McCarthy, who immigrated from Ireland to the U.S. during the famine in the 1800s,” says Fitzpatrick, a native of the western suburbs whose passion for her Irish heritage drew her to Cork, Ireland, for graduate school. “I grew up dancing with one of the largest Irish dance schools in the area, and am thankful to my teacher, Barbara McNulty, for instilling in me a deep respect for traditional Irish dance.” She and husband Emmett, a Lake Forest native who she describes as “100 percent Irish,” moved to Lake Forest in 2019, starting a family that now includes 5-year-old Thomas, 3-year-old Rory, and newborn Mary Eilish, who arrived in late January. “Not a day goes by that I don’t consider myself lucky to raise our kids here,” says Fitzpatrick, a certified Irish dance teacher who opened her school two years ago this month. “We are active in our community, our kids just started preschool, and I have the privilege of teaching Irish dance just blocks away. We couldn’t ask for much more. That being said, this town could use an Irish party once in a while, and that’s what we’re here to bring!” Through her connections to the Irish community (in addition to her work at the Irish Consulate in Chicago, she and husband, Emmett, co-write a business column in the Irish American News) Fitzpatrick has enlisted the support of the Irish government’s Emigrant Support Programme to do just that. On March 17, her FSID will host a St. Patrick’s Day Ceili and party at Gorton Center. Admission is free, and that’s part of the overarching mission for her business—to expand opportunities related to Irish music, dance, arts, and sport for the Lake Forest-Lake Bluff community. “Building a strong community of happy and successful dancers and families connected to the Irish tradition—that is my vision,” explains Fitzpatrick, who also draws from her experience as past Executive Director of the nonprofit Ireland Network Chicago. Some of the students at FSID arrive with generational stories of that proud Irish heritage engrained, much as it was for Fitzpatrick. Others are just smitten with Irish culture. “There is something special about this sport. It requires both strength and grace, soft and heavy shoes, solo and team dancing, performance and competition,” says Fitzpatrick. “I always smile when a parent tells me that their son or daughter with no connection to Ireland ‘just loves to Irish dance.’ That is part of the magic.”
