We proudly present Companies, Films & Projects on behalf of our members. In this brochure, you will find completed films as well as projects in development in search of international partners for financing, co-production, distribution or sales. The diversity of the projects gives a good impression of the variety and vivacity of Dutch film culture. Dutch cinema offers excellent opportunities. The Netherlands Film Production Incentive (NFPI) offers up to 35% cash rebate on film production costs spent in the Netherlands. The NFPI has proven to be highly successful. The NFPI budget for 2019 is â‚Ź 19.25 million excluding the budget for high-end TV-series, of which at least 70% is intended for international coproductions. Dutch-Surinamese Dennis and his new Dutch-French lover Katja are both recently divorced. To get to know each other and their children better, they decide to spend a holiday hiking with a donkey through the Auvergne and Cévennes, the region in France where Katja grew up. After the death of her father twenty years ago, Katja left her village and abandoned her French boyfriend Guy. When Katja and her new family bump into Guy, the situation turns south. When Guy finds out Katja did not come back for him, his suppressed resentment comes out. Slowly the idyll of this new family on their trek through the magic wilds turns into a nightmare.

A travelogue through Shangri-La; a fictitious paradise from the British classic novel Lost Horizon. Twenty years ago a Tibetan tourist spot in China presented scientific proof that it was the real Shangri-La. In her search for the truth behind the supposed evidence the filmmaker excavates layers of fact and fiction of the area. What words and images have attached themselves to facts? How do stories come into being and how do they shape reality?

The Hague Hilton is a battlefield. Not with guns and mortars, but with sandwiches, dirty laundry and clay sculptures. It is an arena where the men will have to secure their place over and over again. The prisoners have no place where they are safe; not in their room, not with their compatriots. They are always on guard and can not let their vigilance down. Although the Yugoslav civil war has stopped, the struggle within the prison walls continues. The men are no longer fighting cities, villages and enclaves but for their position at the breakfast table.

Summer 1974. The city is empty, all friends are on holiday, classmates Daan and Jonas (both 12 years), not friends, have to get by with each other, but their head is full of Heleen, who’s gone – and not on holiday.

At the end of 1945, Bert Röling takes his seat on the Tokyo Tribunal. ‘The International Military Tribunal for the Far East’ is the Japanese version of the German Nuremburg Trials, where war criminals were tried after the Second World War. Through political interference, conspiring colleagues and conflicting legal opinions, tensions rise amongst the group of eleven international judges. As the tribunal threatens to derail, Röling is filled with doubt: should he align himself with the majority, and give in to international pressure, or follow his conscience as an independent judge? 15

After being educated at a 1970s seminary where you can sin as long as you’re really sorry, Koen Kusters moves easily between Sunday mass, brothel and bar. How can he warn his flock against life’s temptations, if he hasn’t experienced them himself? When he starts spending collection plate money on his partying with drugs and women and selling off church treasures, it’s clear to everybody but Kusters that things have gotten out of control… It is the story of Koen Kusters whose ambitious death drive is taking him all the way to the Vatican – to become Pope.

The four-hundred year old De Witte House stands brooding on its Amsterdam canal, waiting... When Robin Taylor accepts the offer to take part in an art restoration project at the De Witte House, she does not realize that she will be plunged into a terrifying maelstrom of malevolent forces and traumas well buried beneath her busy life. For the mysterious organizer of the project has brought her here for a dark purpose; as a sacrifice to his master, the great Floris de Witte, who learned that an artist, if prepared to perform the necessary grisly tasks, can indeed live on in his work.

Dick Maas: The Documentary is a portrait of the Netherlands’ one and only consistent writer/director of genre films. The film will be a companion piece to Maas’ recently published autobiographical book about filmmaking in the Netherlands “Neighbor, what are you doing now?”. With The Lift (1983), Flodder (1986), Amsterdamned (1988) and, more recently, Killer Babes (2007) and Saint (2010), he created some of the most successful Dutch films of all time. In this action-packed film Dick Maas talks freely about the many ups and downs in his long career.

Tempting, but inaccessible, the north Italian harbor Genua is the omnipresent protagonist of this story, in which the universal hope for a better life is held. Different storylines of different characters are intertwined, like a city is a collection of isolated stories of randomly related people. What connects them is their struggle and downfall. This tale about identity and migration in Genua tells the story of Europe today. Based on the book La Superba written by Ilja Leonard Pfeiffer.

Anton de Kom (1898-1945) is without a doubt one of the most meaningful people that Suriname has ever known. His greatest success was the book ‘We Slaves of Suriname’. The writer, nationalist and pioneer of anti-colonial historiography eventually gave his life for the colonial ruler of the Netherlands as a resistance fighter during the Second World War. But his great love, which inspired him all his life, was for his native Suriname.

Three stories intertwine on a ferry crossing from Morocco to Spain. In the course of the journey, fear of loss turns the tide for all.

“Everyone has a landscape in his eyes that he belongs to. If you have lost your soul, you must start looking for it in the landscape that remembers you.” This is what Natalia’s Spanish grandmother always told her. One day, life itself forces the thirty-year-old Natalia to return to the landscape of her past and face the demons of her youth.

SNG Film Studio Nieuwe Gronden, nowadays known as SNG Film, was founded in 1979 out of the legendary film collective Amsterdams Stadjournaal (ASJ). SNG Film still seeks to produce distinctive documentaries and feature films (and everything in between). What is important is the involvement of the filmmaker. SNG Film likes to work with young talent, but does not limit itself to that. Moreover, it is not only about the urgency in which somebody wants to tell something, but primarily the form chosen to do so. International co-productions can be a means to initiating exceptional, artistic films.

Moscow, USSR. 1930. The Pillar Hall of the State House of the Unions. A group of top rank economists and engineers is put on trial accused of plotting a coup d’état against the Soviet power and restore capitalism. The drama is real, but the story is fake. The film gives an unprecedented insight into the origins of a deadly regime, which made the slogan “Lie is Truth” its everyday reality.

The magic of live performance and the mystery of musical creation are captured in a portrait of an artist, whose songs inspire millions. Music is the most abstract and ephemeral of Arts. The challenge is to capture this enigma on film.
