Sherriff wins national awards

oe Marston of Umina is among eight football players of various codes to have his visage placed on Australia Post’s latest series of commemorative stamps, naming him an Australian Legend.

Australia Post CEO Mr Ahmed Fahour said the 2012 Legends were chosen for their contribution to Australian sporting culture and for playing a vital role in shaping Australia as a great sporting nation. Upon receiving the phone call informing him that he had been selected for the honour Mr Marston said “I really didn’t know what to say”. “I thought I must have done something right and thought ‘well it’s a great honour to be selected in that category’.” As the first Australian to not only play for, but also reach the FA Cup finals with a British football club (Preston North End, 1954), FIFA considered Mr Marston to be a pioneer and standardbearer of Australian soccer. Seeking to revitalise Preston North End FC after their relegation to the second division of English football in 1949, a talent scout for the club had seen Mr Marston playing for Leichhardt-Annandale in Division 1 of the NSW State League, and said he was impressed enough to offer to fly both Mr Marston and his wife Edith to England in order to trial for the team. The club’s fortunes began to change in 1951 when Mr Marston was moved from the reserves into their starting lineup, eventually reclaiming their spot in the first division in 1952 when they finished behind Arsenal. After 196 consecutive matches and five years with Preston North End, despite an offer of £80,000 to transfer to Arsenal, Mr Marston returned to his homeland in 1956, where he continued his pioneering

streak as the ﬁrst man to both captain and coach the Australian team, playing for the squad on 37 occasions in total. Mr Marston was presented with a 24-carat gold replica of the 60 cent stamp on which he appears at the ofﬁcial Australia Day lunch in Sydney. Other accolades received by Mr Marston include the Order of the British Empire,

the Alex Tobin Medal, inductions into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame, the Football Federation Australia Hall of Fame and the NSW Hall of Champions. Mr Marston’s achievements are acknowledged by the A-League annually, when the Joe Marston Medal is awarded to the player of the match in that year’s grand ﬁnal.

t t a l o n g Memorial’s Aron Sherriff has been rewarded for a standout year during Bowls Australia’s Awards Night at the Park Hyatt, Melbourne, on Saturday, February 18.

The Australian superstar captured not one but two of the night’s major accolades, while state and national teammate Natasha Van Eldik secured the third. After Van Eldik edged out Cabramatta’s Karen Murphy to be crowned Female Bowler of the Year, Sherriff claimed the ﬁrst of his trophies when he was announced as the Male Bowler of the Year. Moments later, the 26-year-old was back on stage after securing the BCiB International Bowler of the Year award over Van Eldik and last year’s inaugural winner Mark Casey. Having ended 2010 by claiming the World Champion of Champions title, the world number ﬁve continued his rich vein of form on the international stage in 2011 with a dominate display against New Zealand at the Trans Tasman. This was followed by a sublime performance at the Moama International series that assisted the home

nation secure an overall victory against old enemies England and Scotland. The performances assured Sherriff of a position in the Australia v South Africa test series, with the green and gold contingent producing a whitewash of the series, dropping only four of the 24 games played against one of its ﬁercest rivals, after the Springboks ended Australia’s gold medal hopes twice at the Delhi Commonwealth Games. The deﬁning moment in

Sherriff’s stellar year came at the 15 nation biennial Asia Paciﬁc Championships where a powerful showing on the international stage saw him skip his fours team to gold and his triples to silver medals, in the process ensuring Australia of the overall winners’ and overall men’s trophies. In a testament to his outstanding year, Sherriff secured 44 votes to ﬁnish 27 clear of his nearest rival, as voted by his peers.

Marlins win eight in a row he Central Coast Marlins won their eighth consecutive game 5-3, defeating the Cronulla Sharks at Baseball Park, Springﬁeld, on the weekend of February 18 and 19.

The win reassured the Marlins of their top spot on the ladder.

The Cronulla side jumped out to an early lead when they scored two runs in the ﬁrst inning, though this would be the only offense the Sydney-siders would mount, as Marlins’ starting pitcher Paul Anderson settled in to the game nicely. Anderson threw for ﬁve innings, striking out eight hitters along the way. Returning from his duties

with the Sydney Blue Sox, recently named Rookie of the Year in the ABL, Aidan Francis took to the hill and dominated the Sharks’ hitter, completing four innings of work and striking out eight batters along the way. The Marlins’ offense was slow to get started, scoring a lone run in the second inning to cut the deﬁcit in half.

Designated hitter, Scott Harrison, hit a single home run to tie the game in the fourth inning. The game stayed level until the Marlins’ hitters started to ﬁre in the seventh inning, with a two-run home run to Moko Moanaroa, followed by consecutive hits to Tom O’Gorman, Dan Smith, Michael Ashton and Scott Harrison, who added

another run to take the score to 5-3, where it remained. Offensive standouts were Scott Harrison and Tom O’Gorman, who each collected three hits. It was a successful day for the Marlins Club as they won ﬁrst, second and third grade, as well as U18s and women’s.

Formula 3 challenge about to start

uggerah’s Kido Mingara Judo Club returned from the ACT International Open Judo Championships with a brilliant result.

The club had six players compete who returned with seven medals, two gold, two silver and three bronze. The ACT International Open Championships, held in Canberra, enjoyed participating teams from all States. It was hotly contested as one of the most important National Points tournaments for the players that are seeking selection for this year’s International events including the Oceania Championship held later this year in Cairns. Liam Yokoyama made it look easy, repeating his last years performance, this time in the new 60kg, U20 age division. He dominated from the ﬁrst bout, winning all in ﬁne style by full point [ippon] for the gold. His seoinage [shoulder throw] was his mainstay, but he secured two bouts by submission holds. Liam’s intense training preparation in Japan along with his natural talent really paid off. This result coupled to next month’s Queensland Open, will determine a berth on the Oceania Team and has set him up as a strong contender for the event. Coach Pete Acciari said: “At only 16, Liam backed up his performance in the tough adult Senior Men category by placing third, the fact that he only lost one bout narrowly against Australia’s Beijing Olympic rep shows he will be a top player in the future.” Melinda Brown had a mixed day, running hot and

cold in some bouts in the 52kg divisions. The lack of consistency cost her, having to settle for a bronze in the U20 and a fifth in Seniors. Both Liam and Melinda are selected in the prestigious JFA National Talent Scholarship Program placing in the top 20 juniors of the Nation. During this year, they will benefit immensely from having been selected on the program which aims to develop young judoka for a future Olympics. They will train several weeks at the AIS, travel to Japan and represent Australia. Caroline Hain entered the 48kg Cadet and U20 categories. After a year’s recovery from a serious injury, she found the going tough but improved from bout to bout. Her winning comeback was only stopped in the finals having to settle for silver in both divisions. Angelina Yokoyama had a hard challenge just coming up from the girl divisions. The draw wasn’t kind to her, but nevertheless, she forged through the repechage and earned herself a bronze in the 48kg Cadets. Neeson Naidoo from Wyong reaped the rewards of a very committed training year by applying his strong new throwing skills. He blasted his way through the preliminaries with quality [ippon] throws. Only in the finals did he have to extend himself to secure a win by minor score. Neeson showed his potential and is definitely to be watched in the future. In fact all players are well on track and training hard for this year’s Nationals to be held in June in the ACT.

teel Guiliana, Australia’s National Forpark Formula 3 Champion, is preparing to take on the Formula 3 Gold Star for 2012, with Round One commencing at the Clipsal500 weekend in Adelaide during the first week of March.

Guiliana, from Terrigal, has just returned from Adelaide where he drove his new Mercedes Powered Dallara for the first time. He said: “I am feeling confident.” “The new car is a delight to drive. “Ian Richards and the R-Tek Team have done a magnificent job preparing the Dallara in readiness for this season. “We are looking forward to a great season of Motor Racing”. The Italian designed and built Dallara is powered by a 2.0L FourCylinder engine producing approximately 230BHP (190kw) at 7,500RPM. It’s mandated racing weight is 540kg; and it boasts a full Carbon Fibre chassis. The Dallara runs a Six-Speed Sequential gearbox and special race controlled Kumho Slick Tyres. These Formula 3 cars lap Phillip Island, for instance, in 1m24

seconds. That’s seven seconds quicker than Casey Stoner’s Moto GP Honda and nine seconds up on a V8 Supercar. The car will be flat for 60 seconds of that 84 second lap, touching the brakes only four times out of the 12 corners. The average lap speed is 183km/hr. Turn one is taken flat out at 257km/hr. Round One, at Clipsal will see Guiliana on the track six times between Thursday, March 1, and Sunday, March 4, with practice through the streets of Adelaide on Thursday, with Qualifying and Race 1 on Friday, Race 2 Saturday and Sunday the Race 3 Feature Race. Well laid foundations from the 2011 seasonm, which saw Guiliana win the inaugural Formula 3 Forpark Scholarship together with the Australian National Formula 3 Championship, have catapulted Steel into a professional racing career this year. While formal s p o n s o r s h i p arrangements have yet to be announced, Steel is assured of a bright future. Steel will be carrying children’s charity The Variety Club with him on his journey throughout his career and their mascot “Sheridan” will accompany him.

All participants gain medals at junior TRYathlon

ine hundred children took part in the ﬁrst leg of the annual Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon at Woy Woy on Sunday, January 22.

Sporting stars Kurt Gidley, Nicole Hackett, Kristina Hagberg and Benn Harradine along with Central Coast Mariners players awarded medals to all the participants aged between seven and 15 after they completed the specially designed kids swim, bike and run course. In the spirit of noncompetitive enjoyment, no placings or times were recorded. According to post-event surveys conducted with parents over the 13 years during which the event has been held, kids who participated got a major boost to their self esteem because of the “everyone’s a winner” event philosophy and were more likely to continue doing physical activity after the event. entral Coast M a r i n e r s returned to their winning ways with a dominant 2-0 triumph over Wellington Phoenix at Bluetongue Stadium on Saturday, February 18.

Tomas Rogic’s second sublime strike in as many weeks gave the Mariners the lead their first half dominance deserved early in the second half before Dutch defender Patrick Zwaanswijk headed home in the 83rd minute to ensure the Mariners wouldn’t be pegged back by Ricki Herbert’s men in the final stages of the entertaining encounter. From the outset, the home side was full of running, and this attacking approach nearly netted the opener in just the second minute. Rogic showed great skill to round Wellington goalkeeper Mark Paston and tee up Michael McGlinchey but the Scottish-raised, New Zealand international’s shot was well saved. Soon after, the Mariners ought to have taken the lead when in an amazing passage of play they had four chances to beat Paston, but were unable to do so. Playing in his first match in Australia, English striker Sutton looked promising, holding the ball up well and

firing off shots when the opportunity arose. It took 21 minutes but the Phoenix’s first shot on goal was a spectacular effort from Chris Greenacre. The striker threw his whole body into the volley but was unable to keep his strike down. Phoenix custodian Mark Paston was arguably the busiest player on the pitch; however, everything that the Mariners threw at the talented shot-stopper he managed to palm away. Twice the experienced goalkeeper thwarted Adam Kwasnik who was proving to be a handful for the Wellington defence. After the interval, it was Rogic, the name on the lips of every fan after his scintillating performance against Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park the week before, who opened the scoring. Picking the ball up in midfield, Rogic’s curling left foot shot left Paston with no chance as it nestled in the corner of the net. And while Mariners custodian Justin Pasfield was forced into a sharp reaction save from a strong Chris Greenacre header in the 58th minute, it was really the only main threat the visitors managed to conjure against a stern Central Coast backline. As the clock wound down and Graham Arnold’s team continued to attack, Patrick Zwaanswijk sealed

Yule to coach Men’s First Division by Glen Lauder

osford Dragons coach Mark Yule has been given the chance to guide the Men’s First Division team into the Premier League in time for the club’s 50th season after ﬁve years of moulding the club’s Women’s Premier League side into one of the most successful teams in the state.

Recruitment has been impressive with former Wyoming and Umina Premier League striker Marc Tarring signing on as player/ ﬁtness coach and, under the watchful eye of Yule, has been putting the mix of youth and experience through an arduous pre-season since before Christmas. “I’ve had a wonderful ﬁve years with a great bunch of girls and I’m really excited about that success hopefully continuing with the guys,” said Yule. “I’ve been really impressed with their commitment and attitude to training and, while the squad is still very much a work in progress, I’m delighted where we are at at the moment.” In moving on, Yule has passed the Women’s Premier League baton over to Rob Farthing, who, along with assistant Bill Birch, will be looking to replicate the success the team has created since winning the League and Grand Final double in 2010. Farthing was behind the team’s Premier League promotion in 2006 and has

also had experience as head coach of the club’s men’s senior squad. Gosford City president Peter Huxley said it was not only the club’s flagship sides that would be taking high hopes into the new season. “We have a wonderful crop of juniors right through from U5s to U16s and everyone involved has subscribed to what the club is all about,” said Huxley. “There’s also a great culture in all of our All Age and Over Age teams and, off the field, we’ve been kicking goals to prepare for a successful season both on and off. “Indeed, the club has formed partnerships with several well-known local businesses as sponsors, including new Overall Club Sponsor 3S Lighting, Men’s First Division Major Sponsor The Valley Tavern, Niagara Park and Women’s Premier League Major Sponsor Enviroarch Australia. “We are delighted to have such wonderful partners off the field. “They are instrumental in helping us achieve the success we are aiming for and hopefully our success can benefit them. “We are hoping to make these long-term relationships,” he added. McDonald extends Mariners contract entral Coast Mariners have announced that talented 22-yearold left-side utility Brad McDonald has agreed to terms with the club to extend his contract for a further season.

McDonald, a regular for North Queensland Fury in their final campaign in the Hyundai A-League, is yet to make his first team debut for the Mariners but said that with the structures in place at the club he knows he is progressing. “I feel I’ve improved a great deal even though I’m not playing (in the first team),” McDonald said. “Graham (Arnold) has also pushed me on and showed me DVDs on what to do; position wise, and tactically wise.” McDonald has been a regular member of the Mariners National Youth League (NYL) team this season, scoring frequently from left midfield to help the junior Yellow and Navy to first place on the competition ladder with just two games to play. The dynamo said that it would be terrific to secure a NYL winners medal. “It would be pretty deserving, not for me only, but for the young boys as well because they’ve done very well to step up, but also with the older boys coming down,” he said. Central Coast Mariners head coach Graham Arnold said the one-season contract extension for McDonald was a just reward for his commitment and professionalism shown in training. “Brad’s done extremely well since he came to the club,” Arnold said. “Like all of our young boys, and he is young, it

Pre-season cup kicks off he 2012 football season got off to a ﬂying start with the commencement of the Hill and Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup round one played out last Saturday, February 18, at Pluim Park.

The Hill and Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup will be a round robin format providing all participating teams with a minimum of three games. The highest ranked teams within their pool would progress into a final series. Principal of Hill and Co Lawyers Mr Peter Hill said: “I am pleased to once again be a major sponsor of the pre-season cup.” “It is a worthwhile competition for both women and men and well run by Central Coast Football.” Central Coast Football general manager Mr Peter Townsend said: “It’s great news to see Hill and Co Lawyers once again sponsoring this event and I look forward to the continuing support of Hill and Co Lawyers in building the future of football here on the Coast.” Prize money will be divvied up between the winners of the men’s first grade competition of $3000, the women’s winner getting $1500 and the men’s first grade runners up getting $500. Nine of the 10 matches in the ﬁrst round of the Mens Hill & Co Lawyers Central Coast Cup have gone to script, with Premier League clubs defeating their Division One rivals in matches played over the weekend. The only upset came at Pluim Park on Saturday evening where Division One club, Gosford, defeated Kanwal 3-0 with the goals scored by Marc Tarring, Dylan Haine and Tom Carbone, all coming in the second half. Star of the round was striker Matt Lawrence, who scored all six of Killarney District’s goals in their 6-1 win over Ourimbah at Budgewoi FC. Lawrence, a former Central Coast representative player, has rejoined his former junior club for the 2012 season, after stints with Terrigal (2010) and Kincumber (2011). The season began badly for the two teams who were relegated from Premier League last year, with Wyong being thrashed 8-0 by Berkeley Vale, with Troy Mumford bagging a hattrick, and Kincumber going

down 7-1 to Budgewoi. The eagerly anticipated Peninsula Derby between Umina and SouthernEttalong, the first meeting between the two clubs since Southern’s relegation in 2008, was the highlight of Sunday’s matches at Pluim Park. A first-half double to striker Chris Powell gave Umina a 2-0 half-time lead, extended to 3-0 by Josh Schumann before Southern a late consolation goal for a final score of 3-1. oukley Cricket Club has been named the 2011-12 winner of the Glenn Rowlands Shield after their defeat of Narara in the U21 Grand Final at Mt Penang on Sunday, February 19.

Toukley captain Dave Molan won the toss and sent Narara in to bat. He struck first with a wicket in the first over. Narara never recovered from this early setback and wickets fell steadily, thanks to tightly controlled bowling and some unfortunate choices of shots by dismissed batsmen. Only Riley Clifton put up some resistance with a hard-fought 18. The Toukley bowlers shared the wickets with Tom Keil taking 3/24, Brodie King 2/0, Michel Bell 2/10 and Dave Molan 2/16. The innings were highlighted by some superb ground fielding which left Narara dismissed in the 26th over for 67. Narara’s bowlers, led by captain Michael Shelley and Jason Buckley, tried hard but Toukley batted calmly and reached the target in the 25th over thanks to a controlled innings of 48 not out from James McCombie. The wicket-keeper/ batsman was named man of the match for his batting, two good catches, and a tidy display behind the stumps. The weather was kind, the pitch was excellent and good bowling from both

sides made it difﬁcult to score runs. Like all cricket this summer, the U21 competition was affected by weather, but there were many bright young stars showing their talents through the season. Some of the highlights included Ryan James of Terrigal’s 140 against Doyalson, Ian Slatcher of Terrigal’s 7/31 also against Doyalson, James McCombie’s seven catches for Narara, Kyle Jordan of Narara’s 5/17 in the semi ﬁnal against Mountains, and the sportsmanship and spirit displayed by all the young cricketers.

Tristen played his junior cricket at Woy Woy and graduated to ﬁrst grade for Woy Woy in the 2009-10

season. At the beginning of the 2011-12 season, he moved to play cricket for Northern Districts in Sydney and soon found himself playing in ﬁrst grade. An opening batsman, Tristen has represented the Central Coast at all levels from U10 up to U21 before he moved to Sydney. Tristen was selected to

play for NSW in the Futures league match against the ACT held in Canberra and distinguished himself in high quality company. This is another success story for Central Coast Cricket and an example of what dedicated, hardworking young cricketers can achieve.

Hard fought fours titles

he 2012 Bowls Central Coast/ Zone 15 Major Fours and President’s Reserve Fours Championships both attracted a large ﬁeld of teams.

Both divisions were divided into four sections each. With 196 players in the Major Fours, the sectional rounds winners were Avoca Beach in Section One, Terrigal in Section Two and Ettalong in Section Three and Four. Run in parallel with the Majors, the 140 players in the President’s Reserves fought out their sectional rounds with Halekulani winning Section 1, Woy Woy Section 2, Umina Section 3 and another Ettalong team winning Section 4. This set the scene for a day of bowls at Ettalong Beach Memorial Bowling Club on Saturday, January 28. The semi-ﬁnals took place in the morning, while the ﬁnals waited until after lunch. The morning semis saw big wins in the Majors for Terrigal over Avoca Beach 26-5 and for Aron Sherriff’s Ettalong team over their fellow club mates, led by Danny McNeilly 24-4. 50 years of bowling at Ourimbah

Sherriff on track for grand slam

urimbah Lisarow RSL Bowling Club celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Saturday, February 18, with a luncheon and a social game of bowls for 75 members and guests.

Among the official guests were RNSWBA finance director Mr Ron King, Zone 15 State Councillor Doug Rose, Bowls Central Coast president Mr Kevin Dring and treasurer Mr Albert Heath. Club secretary Tony Pearce was Master of Ceremonies and he gave everyone an interesting and informative overview of the Club’s history. It all started with a group playing indoor bowls in a shed on the corner of Dog Trap Rd and the Pacific Highway. The Ourimbah-Lisarow RSL Men’s Bowling Club was first formed in 1960 and affiliated with the Royal NSW Bowling Association on August 31, 1960. The Club room in those days, where they held functions and meetings, was in part of the old Produce Store which eventually became the OurimbahLisarow RSL Club premises. The Club has gone through many development stages over the years with members’ facilities and comfort always the major

criteria. In 1974, they were the ﬁrst Central Coast Bowling Club to win a State Pennant, a feat many other Clubs are still yet to achieve. Club identity and now Club patron Clancy Preston was a member of this historic team and he was in attendance at the luncheon to recall the memories and share the Club’s success with his grandson Dane Preston who was a member of the victorious side who won the Bowls Central Coast Grade 5 Pennant in 2011. During the luncheon, Ron King presented RNSWBA Merit Badges to Bill Davison, Laurie Jones, Tie Bars to Chris Walker, Viv Trusler and Ladies Brooches to Patricia Braham and Jenny Wastell for their outstanding services to the Club. MrKing also made a special presentation on behalf of the RNSWBA of a silver salver to Bowling Club President Brian Braham in commemoration of the Club’s 50th anniversary. Mr Dring also presented Bowls Central Coast Merit Badges to John Martin, Noel Preston Tie Bars to Tony Pearce, Wayne Poulton and Ladies Brooches to Margaret Sohier and June Littleﬁed. With the 2012 pennant competition about to start, Ourimbah-Lisarow is keen to build upon its proud history and competitive spirit.

t t a l o n g Memorial’s Aron Sherriff is on track to win another Central Coast/Zone 15 Grand Slam following a win in the Zone Pairs, partnered with Tony Laguzza at Avoca Beach Bowling Club on Sunday, February 12.

This followed his win in the Zone Fours two weeks earlier. However, winning the pairs was not plain sailing for the champion bowler. Sherriff and Laguzza were lucky to win their Section, after they found three shots on the last end in order to draw the match against Tony Scott and Grant Spurway of The Greens. They eventually won on an extra-end tie-breaker. The semi-ﬁnal on the morning of Saturday, February 11, against Avoca Beach’s Garry Macfayden and Tony Shoebridge was the closest of matches and ﬁnished 20-all on the 20th end. On the last end,

he Ocean Beach Malibu Club held its ﬁrst contest for the year at Umina Beach on Sunday, February 5.

Four times ladies club champion Maddie Cook made a welcome return after a two year absence along with her friend Sally Oman, who managed to defeat the current ladies champion Cyndi Zoranovic in their round two heat. Men’s club champion Kai Ellice-Flint continued his good form from last year to win the day from Hayden Emery and Bryce Williams. New member Rob McCaughan put the wind up a few of the more fancied surfers by winning his ﬁrst round heat in ﬁne style, but found the going a lot tougher

in round two, surfing against all of the other first round winners. Another great surfer to return to the club after many years away was Paul Brandon, who also won his first round heat. he Peninsula Leisure Centre (PLC) and Gosford Olympic Pool will play host to some of New Zealand’s Olympic hopefuls over the next week.

The squad, currently in Australia following the NSW Open Swimming Championships held earlier this month, will base themselves on the Central Coast until Friday, February 24. In preparations for their London 2012 campaign, the squad will be working hard in the gym and pool facilities of the PLC. They also held a combined training session with the Central Coast Academy of Sport’s Elite Swim Squad at Gosford Pool on Saturday, February 18. The New Zealand squad boasts past Olympians including Corney Swanepoel who is currently preparing for what will be his third Olympics and Melissa Ingram, a bronze medalist at the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne.

Gosford Council’s Manager of Open Space and Leisure Services Mr Phil Moore said that hosting the squad was a real recognition of the aquatic facilities available to the community. “It is a pleasure to be hosting the New Zealand Swimming Squad at the PLC and Gosford Olympic Pool. “Having Olympic and Commonwealth medallists training here is testimony to the quality of the facilities we have here at the PLC. “The squad will make use of our 50m Olympic pool, recovery pool, gym and hard court area while also being ﬁve minutes from Umina and Ocean Beach for outdoor training,” said Mr Moore. Mr Moore said it was great to be able to play a small role in each athlete’s preparation for London 2012. “We hope that the squad’s time here on the Central Coast can in some way assist them in achieving their best and winning medals in London,” said Mr Moore.
