tarting in 2015, we will begin our Educational series of monthly meetings that will be co-sponsored with UNCE, TWMA, and Living with Fire. Our meetings will remain at the Cooperative Extension on Energy Way the first Tuesday of every month at noon. Our focus this year will be on various water issues that face our Industry and landscapes. Our Annual Trade show and Conference will be held on February 3rd and 4th, 2015 at the Reno Sparks Convention Center. We will be offering ICPI Certification this year and this will be a two day class that will begin on February 3rd at 8 am. Please visit our website for more information on our upcoming events. We would like to welcome Heidi Kratsch as our new president the first of January. While it has been a year of growing for the NLA we look forward to many new things to come in 2015 and will support Heidi in any way that she needs us. W
inter is finally here and most landscapes have been put to bed, but there are still chores that can be done that will help reduce problems come spring. One of these tasks is controlling over-wintering insects with Dormant Oil “Dormant oils are sprays. Many insects spend the winter on and around our trees, living in the cracks of rough barked trees and in the organic duff at the base of trees. Applying a dormant oil after leaf drop and before bud break can help reduce these populations and lessen pest problems during the upcoming growing season. Dormant oils are most commonly generally used to control used on fruit trees, but they are also effective in controlling pests on other landscape trees that commonly have insect mites and soft bodied infestations such as pines, ash, birch and aspen. Dormant oils are generally used to control mites and soft bodied insects such as aphids and scale. Oils work by suffocating the insects: they block the air holes (spiracles) through which insects breathe. Oils can also act as poisons, insects such as aphids interacting with the fatty acids of the insect and interfering with normal metabolism. Oils not only kill adult insects, but larvae, nymphs and eggs as well. and scale.” When spraying dormant oil it is important to follow label directions carefully, as different oils have different restrictions. Generally speaking dormant oils should be applied when the temperatures are above freezing; freezing temperatures can cause the emulsion to break down and produce uneven coverage. Also, do not apply oils if plant tissues are wet or rain is likely as these conditions can inhibit proper oil coverage. Although it is possible to combine some fungicides with oil sprays to help control disease, do not apply oils in combination with sulfur or sulfurcontaining pesticides; sulfur can react with oils to form compounds that are toxic to plants. Because elemental sulfur can persist for long periods, label directions on most oils prohibit their use within 30 days of a sulfur application. Dormant oil sprays are a great tool to significantly reduce overwintering pest populations. Come spring, pest outbreaks will be smaller and more easily controlled, allowing your maintenance workers to focus on other spring chores.

These individuals have chosen to match their knowledge against state and national standards and earned their certification. 4 The completion of the testing process is indicative of the ability to perform under pressure and meet deadlines. 4 Recertification assures knowledge, skills, and ability are continuously updated and the current national green industry standards. 4 Certification is one area of common ground that clients can use to judge quality and professionalism. 4 Certification saves the customer money because the certified individuals knowledge, skill, and ability make them better able to assist customers, meet contract specifications, and successfully manage both the schedule and the budget.
