ABOUT THE DINNER

OUR SPEAKERS

Tamara Draut is the vice president of policy and research at Demos, a public policy organization working for an America where we all have an equal say in our democracy and an equal chance in our economy. She is also the author of two ground-breaking books: Sleeping Giant: How America’s New Working Class Will Transform America (2016) and Strapped: Why America’s 20and 30-Somethings Can’t Get Ahead (2006), both published by Doubleday. Just Harvest and the United Steelworkers are proud to honor Tamara Draut with our 2017 George and Jane Becker Memorial Award. One Pennsylvania unites low-income and working class activists with the support of a broad coalition of community, labor, faith, and students’ organizations. Their members are workers, students, parents, seniors, people with disabilities, and retirees who work to shift the balance of power into the hands of the people. They campaign for good, family-sustaining jobs, strong and healthy communities, and corporate accountability. Together, they tackle the fundamental economic justice and political participation problems of our community. The Seeds of Justice Award is presented annually to individuals or organizations that make extraordinary contributions in advancing Just Harvest’s mission to eliminate hunger and poverty. It gives us great pleasure to present this award to our allies at the Kingsley Association.

ABOUT THE AUCTION MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

The silent auction is your oppurtunity to Make a Difference in the lives of our neighbors who struggle to put food on the table everyday. Your winning bids support Just Harvest and our mission to end hunger in our community.

OUR SILENT AUCTION

The silent auction will open for bidding to all guests at the beginning of the evening and close at 8:30 pm. An announcement will be made to inform bidders when the Silent Auction will close. Each item in the auction has a bid sheet in front of it, and each increase in bid must equal or exceed the “minimum raise” on that sheet to constitute a valid bid. The closing bid, as determined by the auction staff, constitutes the winning bid.

BUY IT NOW

Most bid sheets have a “Buy It Now” price listed above the bid section. Using the Buy-It-Now option stops all other bidding. on the item. To purchase the item for this price, take the bid sheet to the auction checkout table and inform the auction staff. “Buy It Now” will cease to be an option on any given item if the bidding surpasses the “Buy It Now” price.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Just Harvest has endeavored to catalog and describe items and services correctly, but everything is sold as is. Below are some of our favorite items, including round-trip air fare with Spirit Airlines, one-of-a-kind paintings by local artists, and baskets of wine!

Boosting Commu FRESH ACCESS Many farmers markets generally accept only cash, with only a few farmers able to swipe credit cards. Our Fresh Access program, which expanded to 21 farmers markets in the Pittsburgh area this year, allows shoppers to use credit, debit, and – most importantly – ACCESS (food stamps) cards. Shoppers swipe their cards in exchange for tokens to buy goods at the market. With tokens, customers can buy any products they would normally buy at grocery stores but get farmers market quality and freshness. For Bonnie, an employee at a nearby public library, buying fresh food for herself and her son Andrew hasn’t always been easy. Bonnie has been a regular at the East Liberty market since she learned about the Fresh Access program four years ago. She was ecstatic to find that fresh food was more accessible than ever. Every week, Bonnie is sure to bring her ACCESS card to the Fresh Access table and purchase enough tokens to stock up on vegetables for the week. When asked how the Fresh Access program has helped her, she replied that she is “more likely to eat healthy foods throughout the week.” Access also means being able to afford the produce that is available. Your support of our Fresh Access and Food Bucks incentive programs helps lowincome households afford fresh, healthy food while supporting regional farms and farmers market. Total Fresh Access sales since the program began in 2013 has now reached nearly $700,000.

FRESH

H E A L T H Y and

Bonnie also spoke enthusiastically about the things she learns at the farmers market. She explained, “I’ve discovered new foods here – things I never knew existed because you don’t see them at the grocery store!”

FRESH CORNERS is another of our forward-looking responses to

the problem of "food deserts." Launched in late 2016, the program seeks to improve communities from within by partnering with local store owners to provide affordable access to fresh, nutritious, foods. Fruits and vegetables like apples, bananas, oranges, potatoes, and onions are now available – and can be purchased using food stamps – at five healthy corner store locations (listed below), with three more in the works for later this year, and more to come in 2018. • 5 Generation Bakers, McKees Rocks* • Carl’s Cafe, Rankin* • Farm Fresh Foods, East Liberty • In & Out Corner Market, McKees Rocks • L.A. Grocery, Larimer

*Also running our Produce Pledge shopper incentive program.

unity Food Access helping hungry seniors Just Harvest completed 1,500 food stamps applications for Allegheny County residents in the past 12 months. The following success story is similar to many others your support makes possible. Hundreds of seniors in Allegheny County are particularly vulnerable to hunger, and lack the ability to navigate the welfare system to get the nutrition assistance benefits they're eligible for and desperately need. Thanks to you and new funding from the National Council on Aging, Just Harvest's outreach about a new easier application process for seniors (ESAP) and case advocacy gets the problem solved and benefits approved for our older neigbors in need.

Brian is a 75-yr-old resident of a senior high-rise

apartment buliding, living on his Social Security Income of $702 per month. He had been receiving food stamps for more than five years when his benefits suddenly stopped. He had missed his semiannual renewal, the certification of eligibility that DHS requires every six months. Brian is illiterate, and his daughter had been handling most of his paperwork over the past several years. But she had moved away. We intervened with the Pa. Dept. of Human Services and got them the required paperwork right away. They approved and reinstated his benefit of $160/ month within five days.

PUTTING MONEY IN PEOPLE’S POCKETS Susan was one of our record 2,958 tax clients in 2017. Our free program secured $6.03 million in refunds to low-income households – another record – thanks to you and our talented and hardworking tax team.

Susan, a resident of Overbrook, came to file her taxes at Just Harvest through the United Way’s Free Tax Preparation Coalition, of which Just Harvest is a leading member. She and her son walked into our South Side office location with a large box of homemade cupcakes for the volunteers. This was not her first year at the Just Harvest tax site. After learning about the program in 2005, she has used our services every year since. Previously she filed her taxes using H&R Block, whose services cost her almost all of her return. She said she is thrilled to have found a better option. For the past few tax seasons she has brought us baked goods to show her gratitude. Each year Susan uses her tax return to make repairs in her home, a home she has owned since 1977. “I do the repairs myself,” she said. Susan began working at McDonald’s in 1995 with a starting wage of $5.75/hour. Now 22 years later she makes $9.00/hour, raises – averaging 25 cents a year – that she has had to fight to acquire. For 17years Susan worked seven days a week. Only in the past five years has she taken a day off. We’re glad to help make things a little easier for her. 11

Justice, Not Charity: How to End Hunger At any given time, nearly 1 in 7 of our neighbors in Allegheny County are facing chronic hunger and food insecurity. These low-income families, seniors, and people with disabilities don’t know whether they’ll be able to afford their next meal. Aside from the immeasurable moral costs of hunger in human suffering and indignity, hunger takes a quantifiable toll on public health, education outcomes, and our economy — totalling around $3.25 billion/year in Pennsylvania.

ADDRESSING HUNGER AT ITS ROOT Just Harvest reduces hunger, not by handing out food, but by lifting up those in need. We get at the root causes of food insecurity by leveraging public policies and programs to reduce poverty and improve food access for individuals and communities. We have served Allegheny County for 30 years. In that time we have helped tens of thousands of low-income households keep food on the table by boosting their access to tens of millions of dollars in nutrition assistance, tax credits, and other government benefits for which they’re eligible. We are also a long-time leader of efforts to make the public’s response to hunger – through government policy and civic discourse – more sensible and compassionate. Our strong partnerships with the City of Pittsburgh, the Allegheny County Health Department, the United Way of Southwestern PA, and many other local, state, and national allies further leverage our impact for a powerful return on your dollars.
