UNITED STATES STORMS PAST GUATEMALA

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 16, 2014) – Hai downed St. Lucia 12-25, 25-23, 25-19, 30-28 Friday evening on the second day of Men’s NORCECA World Championship Qualifica on Third-Round Pool O Tournament being held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 16, 2014) – The United States used balanced scoring to dominate Guatemala 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 Friday evening to improve to 2-0 in the Men’s NORCECA World Championship Qualifica on Third-Round Pool O Tournament being held at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Hai had lost to St. Lucia 3-1 in the NORCCEA World Championship Second Round Pool J in April 2013, but both teams advanced to the third round. Ernson Moise ignited the Hai offense with 18 points, while Ralph Adloph added 16 points. Volvick Dupuy Senel contributed 10 points in the victory. Julian Bisse e paced St. Lucia with 27 points, while Joseph Clercent contributed 20 points and Jason Octave 11 points. St. Lucia held a 58-51 margin in kills and 9-5 block edge. Hai built a slim 8-7 ace advantage. Hai , now 1-1, finishes pool play on Saturday against the host United States at 7 p.m. MT. St. Lucia, now 0-2 in the tournament, concludes pool play on Saturday against Guatemala at 5 p.m. MT. The top two teams in the four-team NORCECA World Championship Qualifier will play for the gold medal on Sunday with the winner advancing to the 2014 FIVB World Championship taking place in Poland. Photos of the match can be viewed at h ps://www.dropbox.com/sh/ ty0fc2eqcwda3ab/AAC3fVbmrqvnXIbyl9u049iza. Hai Head Coach Yves Larrieux: “The first set was more of an observa on to see what St. Lucia does. In the second set, I asked them to work on recep on to put the other team in difficult situa ons. A er the first set the team believed in themselves.” Hai Captain Ralph Adolph: “We were very mo vated for this match against St. Lucia. We really focused on serve-receive. Every me we had the ball, we wanted to win that point and focus. Tomorrow, we are going to start by giving our best and try to win at least one set against a tough United States team. It will be a hard match, but we will fight.”

With the victory, the Americans earned a spot into Sunday’s gold-medal match with a trip to the 2014 FIVB World Championship going to the winner. Russell Holmes scored 14 points to lead a quartet of Americans in double-digit scoring. Aaron Russell added 12 points, while Murphy Troy and Sean Rooney tacked on 10 points. Guatemala’s Jeyson Nery led his squad with seven points. The U.S. out-blocked Guatemala 8-2 and held a 5-3 ace advantage. The USA will end pool play on Saturday against Hai (1-1) at 7 p.m. MT, while Guatemala (1-1) will look to earn its second victory over St. Lucia (0-2) in a key ba le at 5 p.m. to reach the gold-medal match. The top two teams in the four-team NORCECA World Championship Qualifier will play for the gold medal. Photos of the match can be found at h ps://www.dropbox.com/sh/ iqp5pk3x4v83a9c/AAAggV4wB2heW4Qdo0IJyPx6a. USA Team Captain Sean Rooney: “It was great to see some new faces for the senior team that we haven’t seen before. Aaron Russell, Ryan Ammerman, I thought those guys played great.. Dan McDonnell again. We’re just going to play again tomorrow and keep doing what we’re doing. Everyone on this team is working so hard all the me and that’s what we take pride in as a team.” USA Head Coach John Speraw: “I thought we did great. I really did focus a ton on what we were doing, but (Guatemala) really did play hard. They were very scrappy. They dug a few balls and played with a lot of enthusiasm. They used our block a li le bit and did some things I think we need to go back and learn from.”

St. Lucia Head Coach Kendall Charlery: “It was a very, very disappoin ng match. We started the first set very, very good. We had a good vibe and we had a good thing going. But in the second set we made some crucial mistakes at crucial points and it cost us the set. From there we lost all momentum. We have one more game tomorrow, and we’re going to give it our all against Guatemala. It’s not going to be an easy match. But we’re going to try to salvage something from this tournament.”

Guatemala Head Coach Alvinzi Pelaez: “The USA has a great team. It’s obvious they are going to be one of the top seeds in the World Championships. We tried our best to get as many points as possible tonight. We fought for every point because they were giving it back to us so hard. We wanted to play a good game. There were a lot of people who came out to watch and we wanted to play good volleyball for everyone who was here. We made sure it was not going to be an easy win for the USA. We fought hard for everything we got.”

St. Lucia Captain Jason Octave: “I think it just comes down to our team needing to be more focused on the task at hand. If we stuck to our tac cal plans, then the game should have gone exactly as the first set went. But we kind of strayed a li le bit, we deviated a li le bit, we kind of broke apart a li le bit. And we were just never able to come back and be that one unit that we needed to be to win the match. We have a pre y young, inexperienced team. Hopefully, there is a silver lining in this loss.”

Guatemala Captain Oscar Garcia: “We are really proud to be able to play against a team like the United States. As long as we play with a lot of heart, we can accomplish a lot of things. The USA is just super-strong overall. Their serves were just crazy. They hit hard. It was like rockets. But we are leaving tonight super-happy and we are totally ready to play tomorrow and show up strong.”
