Vigore has been personally requested to cover the Jazz performances at Lincoln Center – an honor we never deemed possible at this early stage; while, at the same time, NY fashion designer, Soni Lee, is discussing her vision of creating a "Vigore piece" for her spring/summer line at NYFW. This all has made ‘the Vigore family’ realize that taking our readers to heart, treating our contributors with gratitude and respect, and, accepting our success with humility, has been a positive platform we'll endeavor to hold close to our ideals as we continue to grow. While covering Fashion Week in NY and London we’ve discovered – or thought we ‘discovered’ – a fabulous design team of two sisters located in CA: Rachel and Lindsay Smith of LINZEL Couture. As you read about them, heed our prediction and keep your eyes on them: they are indeed a force to be reckoned with! Vigore’s growth has added the additional talent of fashion writers, Rachel Corrales, Lisan Simpson, Alima Rowley; relationship expert, Natalie Saar, and proofreader, Alicia Flores to our team; a true asset to both Vigore and her reader’s and we are proud to add these professionals ‘to our family.’ Along with our fashion and ‘abstract couture’ layouts, Vigore will be exploring the more seductive, sensual side of fashion: a world imagined by us all as only an illusion of reality and passion and an indulgence in personal extravagance and romantic interludes. Gillian Welch While as a child she was adopted (which had inspired her to write "Orphan Girl” which is on her "Revival" album) by the Welchs' who moved to Los Angeles to write music for a variety of television shows. After graduating High School she attended the University of California, in Santa Cruz. After UC she attended the Berkley College of Music in Boston and while there, she majored in songwriting. This is where she met her future musical companion David Rawlings. After graduating college and being a huge fan of Bill Monroe, Stanley Brothers, Bob Dylan, Woodie Guthrie and the Carter Family she decided that Nashville was where she should be and soon after David Rawlings followed her. After releasing several critically acclaimed albums, there was an eight-year gap in between their last release 2003s "Soul Journey" and "The Harrow and the Harvest". Gillian claims it took awhile to release due to writer's block and the disappointment of their recording sessions. As Gillian explains, "Our song craft slipped and I really don't know why. It is something that happens to all writers at one time or another.

According to Welch this is most likely the deepest frustration, hence the album title. Welch's and Rawling's writing process involved an "endless back and forth progression of ideas". Welch also comments that "The Harrow and the Harvest" is the most intertwined, coauthored and jointly- composed album. With its' throw back sound of Appalachian, their glorious harmonies and inventive guitar playing provide a rich backdrop for a stunning compilation of original songs. The cover is reminiscent of Art Noveau, done by John Dyer Baizley. He does outstanding job of capturing the duo in a seemingly timeless place "Scarlet Town" is the introduction track on their album which seems like a relationship gone bad "On that day I came to Scarlet Town you promised I'd be your bride you left me here to rot away like holly on a mountainside”. This might be a reference to Pretty Polly, a woman who was murdered by her companion left on a mountainside, so it should read as Polly on the mountainside or possibly Gillian just trying to tease us into thinking a little more abstractly.

Gillian Howard Welch is an American born singer-songwriter who tours and writes with her long time musical companion, David Rawlings. Welch has recorded and performed with many eminent musicians such as Alison Krauss, Ryan Adams, Emmylou Harris, Ani DiFranco, Steve Earle, Ralph Stanley and The Decemberists to name a few. She has had her songs recorded by Jimmy Buffet, Alison Krauss and Union Station, Trisha Yearwood, Joan Baez, Allison Moorer, Emmylou Harris and Kathy Mattea. NatalieSaarNatalieSaar nanny and yoga instructor. Her twin is a phenomenal marketing machine, organizing programs and events at her school, but her lifelong dream is to own a big ranch in the mid-west with a brood of children and host a snowy, white Christmas at her house every year.

Women between the ages of 25-35 are in such an odd time in their life, with just graduating from college to trying to find a job that enables one to use their degree, we're not exactly sure where our career path is taking us or if the entry-level job we have already will get us there. After all the college classes and job applications however, sometimes women decide to take an entirely different path from where they started, realizing they may want to do something entirely different with their life. Women are expected to do so much in this ten year span. I remember a friend of mine came up to me and said, “Do you realize that in the next ten years we're expected to find a man, get married, have a career and bear children?” That's a pretty tall order. Being the social butterfly turned workaholic that I am, I make sure to check in with my friends at least once a week to catch up and make sure they're doing well. I've noticed an odd pattern emerging from my sphere of girlfriends: they are facing a choice between love and careers. While it's entirely possible to have both, for some women it isn't and a choice must be made. My best friend is an artist, we'll call her Marilyn. Marilyn has had the same boyfriend for over two years and I've never seen a better, well-adjusted

couple. They recently moved in together after living 150 miles apart for two years. Marilyn, however, realized that being a post-grad art major was even harder than people had said it would be in the “real world.” Focused on being an art therapist, she's been applying to grad schools that will further her education and allow her to live out her passion. The problem is, these schools are on the opposite side of the country from her lover. While Marilyn is crazy about her man, she knows that she won't be happy unless she's doing what she set out to do in life: create beauty and help people through art therapy. She's willing to leave her relationship up to chance to chase her dreams. Then there are people like my twin sisters. They are both working extremely hard for their degrees but are perfectly content being well-educated housewives. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if that's what you want in life. Ever since my sister was a little girl, when people asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, she'd quickly answer, “I want to be a mommy!” She even considered dropping out of college to be a full-time

Live In Love

Another type of woman is the career woman who isn't sure how much of a career woman she is yet. This was me for awhile. I was brought up to always put your man first, which is what I did for a very long time, until I realized that it just wasn't working. By putting him first, and placing myself and my career second and third, I wasn't getting anything accomplished. I had lost my identity in him. Instead of people knowing me as Natalie Saar, they knew me as “So-and-so's girlfriend.” This didn't sit well with me and I knew something had to change; I was no longer doing things that made me truly happy. I had to learn a valuable lesson: my relationship with myself was the most important one I had. continued on page 128











YES you can have your own opinion about fashion, design and the makings of the chic dimension you call your style. Of course you should have the right to live out and express whatever taste or trend defines your unique character. But when you’re part of a team, like sister duo Rachel and Lindsay Smith of LINZEL COUTURE, thinking for two becomes not only an asset but

also a requirement. Growing up Lindsay, 33 and Rachel, 30 were both inspired by many aspects of their youth, from pop music from artists like Cyndi Lauper and Madonna to fashion magazine posters. “We were influenced by the edgy style they had. We would have all kinds of posters from Versace all over the wall before we even knew what fashion really was”.


“We were so intrigued by fashion books that we would take our Barbie dolls and make outfits for the dolls.” says Rachel.

Unfortunately the neighborhood they initially grew up in did little to nurture their curiosity for what the fashion world could offer, so instances of television

watching

would

suffice.

“Coming from the neighborhood we grew up in, people didn’t have the best clothes. But I would see how when we would watch the Grammy’s how confident the celebrities were and I knew that clothes can change someone’s aura.” says Rachel. Rachel also revealed that getting new clothes for school was a big deal and that reveling in the emotion that putting on an outfit they really enjoyed and the feeling that it gave them took on another sense of importance. It was at that time that they knew someday they would be designing. They thought of the name LINZEL, a culmination of their two names and supplemented “couture” for the kind of clothing they would construct. After the initial desire to design, they went from their self-teachings to studying fashion design at American River College in Sacramento two years ago. Although they felt strength in their previous accomplishments they wanted some formal instruction in pattern making and also took a specialized

class in corset design, which they incorporate in many of their more structured pieces. “One of our teachers, Michael Sommerfield, is actually an amazing fashion designer. He has a Couture wedding boutique located in Sacramento, Miosa Couture. He introduced us to corsets, which we love so much we include them in most of our designs. Our other teacher, Diane Grant-Toscano taught us just about everything there is to know about pattern making. We were very lucky to have exceptional teachers that love what they do. We wouldn’t be where we are today if it wasn’t for our teachers. Other than that we are creative, clever and very motivated. With each and every design it is a lesson in itself. We are always learning as we are doing.” says Lindsay. Upon completing just three classes the sister’s were invited to show at the Art School Fashion Show of their college. They received such notoriety and praise that six months later they were named Emerging Designer at Sacramento Fashion Week. By the following year, in early 2011 they were invited back once again as featured designers. Word has been spreading about LINZEL COUTURE and the driving forces behind the line, Rachel and Lindsay as they made their way to styling the “girl candy” for a music video for rap artists B Smooth, Too Short and Kurupt. That opportunity came to pass when they were approached by the production director after participating in San Francisco’s Where Hip Hop Meets Couture fashion show. It goes to prove that talent, especially when fueled by passion from like minds is a strong component in the composition of design. Case in point; talented people get noticed. Inadvertently you have to wonder if some of that admiration is absorbed unevenly, from the outside looking in one might think that working with a sibling might present certain challenges and upheavals, but the two are quick to point out that it’s actually a plus creating with a person you

know so well. “I’ll come up with a design and then Lindsay will come up with a design and then we’ll collaborate on it. One of us will motivate the other. It’s definitely a blessing.” Rachel beams, about the perks of working with her sister. And “momager” Judy Smith, who was also present for this interview, was quick to assert that “it’s perfectly okay if they disagree from time to time; they’re sisters and they still love each other.”

We want to be recognized as haute couture, our clothing is high fashion, and we design to be edgy but still keep it timeless. We want to keep it fresh and hip but not so over the top that it’s like a costume. I think we touch all over the board with our designs and I don’t think there’s one particular style that can define who we are.

In the end the result is always a play off of both sides, Lindsay is more of the feminine romantic style where as Rachel counts herself as more edgy and dramatic, while all the while their designs deliver a cool, modern sexy look. The girl or woman that LINZEL COUTURE designs for is super flirty and definitely has no trouble differentiating between classic and current, she’s both. “We definitely try to touch on a very wide audience, we go from red carpet to just a woman who wants to look fabulous.” says Rachel. “The vibe of LINZEL is strong, sexy and bold. We like to think of our client as a model off duty, they’re classy yet a bit of a “bad girl”, nonchalant, effortless. They are mostly young professionals in the city, 20-35 year old women who like to feel sexy even though they might actually be lawyers or accountants.” adds Lindsay. They are currently assembling a masterpiece for R&B/Soul singer Marsha Ambrosious who has a penchant for dressing to convey her unique spirit. For us non-celebrities, one eye-catching pick would be the red leather, ruffled collar knee length dress that appears very simple from the front but upon a more careful inspection you are wonderfully surprised by asymmet-


rical cut-outs in the back. This delicate inflection takes the intent from subtle to standout in an instant. And if you’re feeling a little playful, slip on one of their metallic fabric jumpers with reflective gold and silver shimmers, the texture makes it interesting while the simple cut keeps it immutable. And since timelessness and statement making is what LINZEL COUTURE stands for, at this time they have decided to keep their line completely haute couture, with every garment stitched created for the client on demand. Distinctiveness and exclusivity are essential as Rachel and Lindsay are clear to point out, “We want to be recognized as haute couture, our clothing is high fashion, and we design to be edgy but still keep it timeless. We want to keep it fresh and hip but not so over the top that it’s like a costume. I think we touch all over the board with our designs and I don’t think there’s one particular style that can define who we are.” Off the top of my head the word “alluring” comes to mind. I am positioned to use this adjective based on the state-

ment pieces that grace the LINZEL COUTURE collections. From their runway shows there were a number of choice gowns with enough moxie to compete with some of today’s more notable names in the couture arena. And that arena is exactly where these two are headed; with plans to participate in next year’s New York Fashion Week they have set the bar as high as could be expected. But this is not an undeliverable request, the interest in LINZEL COUTURE is a steady one and although they are still considered a little less than famous the odds that this is a fleeting condition are excellent. Rachel and Lindsay put in the most diligent amount of effort to transform their ideas into stunning catwalk ready sensations. And that energy is easily read when taking into account all the hours of drawing, pattern work, sewing and hand stitching that becomes a finished product. “During the initial designing process a lot changes. We go from the drawing stage to fabric selection, from there we go into pattern work and then cut and sew and hand stitching.“ Some people don’t realize how much work goes into it but when you love

what you do it really isn’t work.” says Rachel. And the truth of the matter is in fact, there’s nothing but love in every stitch sewn, love for the craft of design and love of the creation of art. After all you can’t help but take pleasure in an alliance that’s built on a common interest and affection. This dynamic twosome may be etching the road to success one pattern at a time but LINZEL COUTURE doesn’t seem to mind that they’ve got their work cut out for them, literally. Lindsay spells it out exactly. “We look forward to bringing American Couture into other countries. We are very excited for the future of LINZEL. Whether you’re a leopard, zebra, cheetah, giraffe or snake, you’re sure to make a statement with your ensemble while also showing off your confident, fierce and fun personality. So if you have that leopard print skirt hiding in your closet, those snake-patterned bangles you think are too flashy or that zebra print handbag you got on sale but can’t seem to find an occasion for, it’s time to let them loose and run wild. After all, animal prints seem to scream, “I am woman, hear me roar.”

Celebrities are fans of this trend too. If you caught the MTV Movie Awards this summer, I’m sure you noticed Reese Witherspoon, Rosie HuntingtonWhiteley and Lily Collins all wearing animal print dresses on the red carpet. These prints are fashionable during any season, but if you haven’t given this fabulous fad a try, now’s the time to do so. You also don’t need a fat wallet to look good like your favorite celebs. There are tons of affordable alternatives to get you dressing like a star without needing the income of one. There are certain rules you need to keep in mind when wearing animal prints of any kind. This may be a one of the hottest trends to sport, but taking too much of a risk with such a bold print can end up looking like a stampede in the jungle. Follow these rules the next time you’re getting ready to head out one night and you’re sure to turn some heads: PICK YOUR PRINT Choose one animal print to rock and stick with it. Tiger prints look great when combined with black or neutral tones, but they do NOT look good with zebra prints. Leopard prints look similar to cheetah prints but if you take a closer look, they’re very different and can easily clash. Pick one print and one print only. It’s great to have a few animal print pieces in your closet, but wearing them all at the same time is definitely not the way to show that you’re on top of this season’s trend. SIMPLICITY IS KEY When you decide to wear anything animal print, you’re already choosing to walk on the wild side. You don’t need to overdo it and cover up in animal print from head to toe. Just like picking one print to wear, choosing one animal print article of clothing is important too. Make your animal print your centerpiece and accessorize around it. It can be a dress, a jacket, a clutch or a pair of pumps. The key is to choose just one. There’s a fine line between looking fierce and looking like Cruella de Vil. ACCESSORIES If wearing a leopard print dress or topping your LBD with a snake print jacket is too much of a statement for you, choose animal print accessories instead. Make a handbag, scarf, stilettos or bangles your statement piece and pair it with solid colors. You’ll still look fashion-forward while looking chic and poised. TIPS: 3 Leopard, cheetah and tiger prints look great with gold accessories. 3 A tailored black blazer is perfect to top off a bodyhugging animal print dress. 3 Animal prints draw attention, so when deciding where on your body to wear it, make sure you want people looking in that direction.

It may seem like a lot, but once you get used to color blocking you won’t need to use the triangle, you’ll develop a natural eye for the colors that work. When you color block always know that you can use black, white and a neutral cream or brown color at all times. Make sure that when you color block you don’t place the loud color in the areas of your body that you are sensitive about.For example, if you feel like you have thunder thighs you don’t want to put on yellow pants and a black turtleneck top. Doing that will enhance your thighs and make them look bigger than they already appear. Color blocking can be done all year round. Just note that it’s best to be very careful when incorporating patterns (i.e. stripes, polka dots) into your outfits. Patterns that are large may make outfits look a little too busy. The purpose of color blocking is to make the outfit look chic, well put together and exciting, even if you’re on your way to the supermarket. Color blocking is especially fabulous during the colder months. Coats, boots and leg-wear (i.e. pants, jeans, skirts) are on display much more and there’s nothing better than being fabulous and warm at the same time.

HER LIFE, FAVORITE WORK, AND PHOTOGRAPHY Maria loves to give freedom of creativity and imagination, not limiting those involved in her shoots and believes allowing them to run a wave of freedom will result in extraordinary success. She has followed this motto for the past three and a half years and it has led to positive results each time. Starting at her beginnings, she feels she inherited her passion for photography from her father. His fondness for this always found their home filled with books on photography. The magic of the photo paper and chemicals turning into a work of imagination and art fascinated her. That fascination soon made her realize that it was a passion but never knew it would be the beginnings of a life-long, intense desire to create art through the lens. She is happiest holding the camera and capturing moments forever that may have otherwise retreated in obscurity, never to be savored again. As she entered the university, her father gave her the first camera starting her journey into photography. Trial and error became her first lessons with friends and events she was involved with and she meticulously perfected her skills. She has never studied artistic photography, as her talent and creativity dictates the photo, creating it as she imagines it deep inside. Her success, Maria believes, is to treat everything you do with love, believe in yourself and everything will follow with success. As time passed, more professional equipment was acquired and her popularity grew on the Internet. She and friends began to organize her work on social networks, which was the beginning of a professional career for her. Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week is sometimes referred to as the Olympics of the fashion industry. Instead of occurring every four years, the fashion industry gets to revel in the creations of some of the top designers twice a year. It was during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, some seasons back, that Christian Siriano revealed that he was more than Project Runway flash in the pan. It was during last season that designer Adrienne Vittadini proved that veteran supermodels Roshumba, Carole Alt, and Kristen McMenamy still have a viable place in the industry. Though everyone is looking for that next Balenciaga, Christian Dior or Donna Karan, this season established masters Ralph Rucci, Herve Leger by Max Azria, and Norma Kamali unquestionably demonstrated this season why their brands have become renowned for its design acumen and craftsmanship. There were well-thought out, cohesive collections by media darlings Christian Siriano, Rachel Zoe, and Proenza Shuler, but when it comes to mastery of style and presentation, no one does it better than the seasoned veterans.

HERVE LEGER Herve Leger by Max Azria has set itself apart as a brand that captures the sculptural beauty of the feminine silhouette. Since being acquired by the BCBGMAXARIAGROUP in 1998, the brand has continued to maintain its Parisian couture heritage while making strong inroads in the global readyto-wear market. For its Spring/Summer 2012 ready-to-wear collection, creative directors Max and Lubov Azria continued with their global warrior princess motif from previous seasons. However, this season the genius of the collection was in the embellishments and added details. Their iconic bandage dress was embellished with intricate beading, variations of latticed, fringed, and harnessed constructions, and the continuing trends of tribal prints and metallic fibers. A favorite of such style icons as Kate Hudson, Beyonce, Rachel Bilson, and Serena Williams, this recent outing should add more celebrities to their client base.

CHADO RALPH RUCCI Of all the designers who showcased their Spring/Summer collections at Lincoln Center during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Chado Ralph Rucci was the clear audience favorite. His customer is that woman whose social calendar includes the Metropolitan Opera, Metropolitan Museum, and American Ballet Theatre galas. Though these cultural institutions may attract a more stylistically-sedated audience, Rucci’s collections were far from conservative or cautious. Rucci incorporated the current trends of plastic, latex and diaphanous fabrics, as was the norm for several designers this season; however, the beauty of Rucci’s collection was evident in the intricate detailing and architectural construction. Like the brand’s name Chado—an intricate Japanese tea ceremony—every measurement, every detail is given prime consideration; a consideration that renders a masterful collection of wearable art. Standouts in the collection were Rucci’s pink caviar-beaded catsuit matched with gazar-featured tunic, printed caftan studded with crystals and, black caviar sleeveless shell, wisteria infant skirt with black hem band.

NORMA KAMALI What can be said of Norma Kamali? Though this innovative fashion revolutionary has been slightly under the radar for the past few seasons, Kamali’s showing during Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week demonstrates that this design maven is not out of fresh, innovative ideas. Instead of the typical runway show, Kamali chose to present her collection in a 3-D video. “I was impressed by Jack Feldstein’s 3-D documentary Cave of Forgotten Dreams which was about cave painting, and I loved it so much that I decided to do my fashion show, as well as, product pages on my website in 3D,” explained Kamali. Kamali’s clothes are all about movement and having fun, and this collection was no exception. From her electric blue bathing suits and shimmery cocktail dresses to her silver-studded pencil skirts and tights, Kamali proves time and time again that silhouettes are not a thing of past, but an aesthetic that modern women want in their wardrobe.

NORMAN AMBROSE Though Norman Ambrose is not a seasoned veteran, his aesthetic speaks to his inimitable taste and sophistication. Inspired by the “sun glistening on the Mediterranean like a sea of diamonds …,” Ambrose’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection took the viewer through the silvery shadows of the early morning evidenced in classic black noir with a hint of gold overtones to rich shades of peach and coral exhibited in a coral and silver metallic caftan, to Ambrose’s showstopper gold brocade jumpsuit matched with a goldbeaded bolero. This collection is for the consumer that has deep pockets and is not afraid to show it off.

ELENE CASSIS Elene Cassis’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection was her second showing at Lincoln Center. And though her show was the last show of the season, her collection was the perfect denouement to a season that was more about retail viability than the celebrity-studded roster. In just a few seasons Elene Cassis has become a recognized force in the American ready-to-wear market. With her brand already in Neiman-Marcus, this collection should solidify her retail viability with other retail giants. There were no great surprises in this collection; however, what was obvious is that Cassis is focused on what consumers want in their wardrobe; sophisticated, affordable garments that can easily transition from the office to a night out on the town. That said, the collection was not pedestrian, but a sophisticated expression of Cassis’s penchant for geometrical shapes and classic silhouettes. From the elegant, color blocked A-line dresses with just a hint of bling to Cassis’s labyrinth patterns, Cassis demonstrated that she understands how to create a fashion-forward collection that has real retail viability.

JASON TROISI S/S 2012 Whether you’re an enthusiast or a decrier of Jason Troisi, his work will undoubtedly leave a lasting impression and evoke emotions that only a true artist could inspire. Jason’s short lived stint on Project Runway Season 8, certainly did not deter him from moving forward, as he presented his Spring/Summer collection at Exit Art on Sep. 7th. Despite criticism, Jason Troisi stayed true to his design aesthetic which is provocative and inherent in every piece that hit the runway. This collection, as with all his work, is inspired by the human race and our insatiable need to categorize, label and justify all things. Jason Triosi uses this premise to go against the grain and create art that is not only thought provoking, but radical in its presentation. It was clear that the season for which this collection was expected, was not at the forefront when he designed this collection, as the overall tone was anything but spring-like.

In fact, I may be

able to correctly speculate that he is a likely a fan of “Dexter”, the Showtime series about an ethical serial killer with a moral code. This was evidenced in the women’s mummified body suit, where no semblance of skin was revealed despite the flesh color fabric which surely was a calculated choice. The men’s apron overlay with scissors and a butcher knife used to complete the look drove home, the possible source of inspiration. The men’s wear, in particular exuded strength and an air of arrogance that Jason Troisi seemingly embodies. He is not afraid to broach controversial subject matters and it is this need to push the envelope that will make him prolific and insight curiosity by his peers and other trendsetters. It is no wonder that he would choose the legendary McQueen as one of his favorite designers, as perhaps he may have seen many of his qualities in himself. Although Jason was formally trained in design @ Parsons NYC and in Paris, his creativity was dormant for 9 years after graduating.

In 2010, he discovered a yearning to show people

his design perspective and joined the contestants of Project Runway season 8. Jason draws inspiration from “fine art, society, relationships, war and the human emotion.” He has vigorously pursued his need to showcase the source of his inspiration and launched the House of Jason Trosi where he cultivates his craft with no creative limits.

MONIQUE LHUILLIER SPRING 2012 The celebrity lined front row at Monique Lhuillier’s presentation of her Spring/Summer (S/S) 2012 Collection, did little to distract from the awe-inspiring pieces that graced the runway at Lincoln Center on September 10th. Fashion’s elite and celebrities such as Mandy Moore, Rose McGowan, Jamie-Lynn Sigler, Leann Rimes & husband Eddie Cibrian eagerly awaited the highly anticipated spring line which, not surprisingly, surpassed expectations. Just when you thought the color-blocking concept had reached its peak, Monique managed to reinvent the wheel and create a fresh perspective that collaborated femininity with a strong edge, and in so doing, produced a silhouette comparable to Jessica Rabbit. The rich color palette of cadmium yellow, cobalt blue and magenta beautifully accentuated the intricate designs. Each piece had skilfully placed details that were impactful in its execution as side lace inserts, opened back gowns and corseted cocktail dresses drew a few elated gasps as they glided down the runway. This collection was inspired by the woman who loves her body and is not afraid to flaunt the end result of maintaining a healthy fit lifestyle. With this in mind, Monique created a spring collection in celebration of this dynamic woman. Although sex appeal has always been inherent in a Monique Lhuillier design, she managed to turn it up several notches with this collection, while keeping the sophisticated quality that catapulted her to the top of the fashion world. This was a celebration of the female form at its best, and each piece exuded an unapologetic air of confidence and strength. Monique sent this message loud and clear, not only through the figure conscious structure of the gowns, but her choice of prints; such as the black splatter on the white cocktail dress, trench coat and pants seemingly a crowd favourite. Monique Lhuillier has evolved into a design icon since she first became inspired by her own wedding in 1995. That need to fill a void in the wedding dress market over a decade ago has made her a favourite among celebrities and socialites alike. Although she is known for wedding dresses and show-stopping red carpet gowns, she has developed a ready-towear line that will be coveted by fashionistas for years to come.

TADASHI SHOJI SPRING/SUMMER 2012 COLLECTION Paying homage to the Tulip, Tadashi Shoji’s Spring/Summer (S/S) 2012 collection floated down the runway at Lincoln Center on September 8th. As one of the first designers to kick-off fashion week, the overall feel took us on a poetic journey through gardens and meadows as he showcased a collection suited for a woman who is whimsical, yet evokes an air of unassuming confidence. Tadashi’s collection illustrated his love of nature, and although literal at times, was contrive in its execution. The pink tulip dress with the petal-like skirting was undoubtedly made with the finest of fabrics and moved with an understated ease. Gown after gown told the story of where Tadashi may have been during his creation stage, as dresses resembling the honey bee in not only yellow & black, but other color combinations, clearly showed his inspiration for this collection. Ivory dresses with shades of green that gradually faded as it moved up the hemline were visually pleasing and created a subliminal calmness. Tadashi also showcased his impeccable expertise in symmetry and knowledge of the woman’s body, as a floor length ivory gown with open sides and a dramatic plunging back was the show-stopper of the night the moment it appeared on the runway. Tadashi Shoji had a knack for painting and drawing at a young age while growing up in Sendai, Japan. He pursued his natural talent and studied fine arts after deciding to move to Tokyo. This decision soon paid off as he was granted the opportunity to study with the leading contemporary artist Jiro Takamatsu. During his internship, he took yet another risk and moved to the US where he attended University in LA to further his artistic aptitude and soon discovered his heart’s desire, lied in fashion design. It is clear that Tadashi has a visceral approach to leading his life, which translates to his ability to continuously produce innovative design concepts when creating his collections and this S/S 2012 collection was no exception.

You can use this cleanser daily to prevent future breakouts but you should only add brown sugar twice a week to avoid over exfoliation. Although it’s always been a breakfast favorite, it's also very good for skin! OATMEAL AND HONEY MASK–GREAT FOR ANY SKIN TYPE Add fine oatmeal and a teaspoon of honey to make a paste. Apply this as a thick mask to your pimples and acne spots and leave it on for 10-15 min. Rinse thoroughly. Top each zit off with some minty toothpaste and leave it on for one hour. FRUIT HAIR MASK • Mix 1⁄2 ripe banana, add 1⁄2 small avocado, 1⁄4 cantaloupe, 6 grapes, 1 tbsp. of olive oil and 1 tbsp. of plain yogurt in a blender. • If you are feeling frisky you can even throw some Mayonnaise into the mix. • Massage it through your hair and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse the fruit mask and shampoo as usual. You can even make you own hairspray. It’s less expensive, better for your hair and the environment. HOMEMADE HAIR SPRAY • Chop one lemon (or an orange for dry hair). Place in a pot with 2 cups water. Boil until half of the initial amount remains. Cool, strain, and place in a spray bottle. Store in the refrigerator. . • If it is too sticky, add more water. Add one ounce rub-

Another song, " The Way It Will Be" is reminiscent of another relationship gone sour. With lyrics like “Throw me a rope on the rolling tide, what did you want it to be? You said it's him or me and the way you made it, that's the way it will be”. Coming next, “Becky Johnson bought the farm put a needle in her arm”, is a line from the outstanding track "The Way It Goes” which introduces us to a disparaging addiction that eventually leads to Becky Johnson's untimely demise. Other hangers like Miranda, Billy Joe, and Russo and Frank try to make it through this world. The song refrains "that's the way it goes every body's buying little baby clothes, that's the way that it ends and there was a time when all of us were friends”. "Tennessee" is a tale told from the perspective of a young girl and how she ages through the song. "Down along the Dixie Line”, seems to pay sort of a tribute to the original "Dixieland" with banjos that are strumming, horseflies are humming, ripe melons on the vine, the gold and grey weeds saying look away. which I’ll assume is a reference to” look away, look away, look away Dixieland. The repetitiveness of "some bright morning" recollects” l’ll Fly Away”, a duet Gillian and Alison Krauss recorded from the Grammy award winning soundtrack "O' Brother Where Art Thou“. "Hard Times" is a song reminiscent of losing a farm but the Camptown Man maintains an optimism as he sings" hard times ain't gonna rule my mind no more". With an occasional drenching of harmonica "Sliver Dagger” is another song in regards to the end of this life “The great destroyer sleeps in every man here comes my baby, here comes my man, with the silver dagger in his hand " . "The Way the Whole Thing Ends" concludes the album, with the refrain of "Now you're gonna need a friend, that's the way the cornbread crumbles, that's the way the whole thing ends", reminding us of old time relationships, with lyrics such as "Momma’s at the beauty parlor" or " say you wanna see my blue jeans hanging on the old clothesline". On "The Harrow and the Harvest" the duo creates an intimacy that marvels at a level of warmth and agelessness that is quite incomparable to anything they have previously released.
