Something Old, New Borrowed and It’s one of those traditions that every bride loves searching for that something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. Although the dress is mainly the something new people have become very creative and sentimental in all the other categories. We asked our Brides of Limerick family to share with us their something old, new, borrowed and blue. Caroline Murphy’s something old was her late father’s picture printed on material and stitched inside her dress right beside her heart. Her something borrowed was her mother’s bracelet. Michelle McGrath borrowed a diamond pendant from her mum. She had vintage sunglasses as her something old and she attached her birdcage veil to a blue comb in her hair. Lorraine Higgins attached her late grandmother’s locket to her flowers. This served as her something old. Carmel Whyte’s something old was her Nana’s wedding ring. Her new was her dress, her borrowed item was a necklace from her sister-in-law and her blue was the wedding garter. Susan Nash borrowed a pair of rosary beads that her mother received on her first holy communion. Her old item was a pair of earnings she got as a young girl. She wore blue shoes.
Karen Moynihan O’Dwyer combined her something old and borrowed into one. She used the same Winston Churchill silver coin that her parents used on their wedding day. Mary O’Dwyer borrowed a five euro note off her brother minutes before her wedding because she forgot about it. It had a blue European flat on it so it covered the blue too. Niamh Maguire Sheehan’s something new was her Jimmy Choo shoes. Her something old was the first every love letter her boyfriend wrote to her when they were 14 – she pinned it into the hem of her dress. She borrowed her silver wedding bag from her best friend and her something blue was her underwear. Fran Brennan borrowed her wedding dress from her cousin in England. Her something new was her wedding ring. Her something old was a picture of herself and her sister who passed away the year before the wedding.

Great-grandparents Clair and Michael Tobin have been married nearly 62 years yet they reminisce about their wedding like it was yesterday, it was that good! Let’s roll back the clock a little. Beautiful Clair, 83, met handsome Mike, 89, at the Stella Ballroom on September, 1951. Clair, from Myles Street in Limerick was immediately smitten by the Co. Tipperary gentleman. At the time Mike worked as an airport police officer at Shannon and Clair was more than impressed. Five months was all they waited before tying the knot. What was the point in waiting? They knew they were in love. So the romantic Mike presented his girlfriend at the time with a ring at the Post Office Dinner Dance two months after dating. They were married three months later on February 12, 1952. Like most weddings back then they were married at 8.30am in the morning. Not much time for hair and make-up. “It was freezing cold,” recalls Clair, a dress-maker at the time. When the church ceremony was over the newlyweds joined their guests at their wedding breakfast. For dessert they delved into their three tier wedding cake purchased, from the Imperial Bakery for £6 and 7shillings and 6 pence. After more than 60 years married what kind of ingredients go into a long and happy marriage? “It’s important to be able to give and take,” advises Clair. “And being patient. Mike is and always has been a quiet man who doesn’t like confrontation.” Aside from the birth of all the children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren over the years the Tobins shared many happy memories together. “We always enjoyed ballroom dancing particularly in the Two Mile Inn and Doonbeg where we holidayed for many years,” recalls Clair. Mike and Clair now live at the Park Retirement Village in Castletroy, Limerick. They have four children, John, Mary, Michael and Shelia, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
