MINOR STREET PARKS The minor streets of Weinland Park face problems relatŝŶŐ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ĞdžĐĞƐƐŝǀĞ ƐƚŽƌŵ ǁĂƚĞƌ ƌƵŶŽī ĐƌĞĂƚĞĚ ĚƵĞ ƚŽ the width and amount of asphalt used to build them. ZĂƚŚĞƌ ƚŚĂŶ ĂƩ ĞŵƉƟ ŶŐ ƚŽ ƐƉĞŶĚ ƌĞďƵŝůĚ ƚŚĞ ƐƚƌĞĞƚƐ ĂŶĚ shrinking them down to reduce impermeable surface ĂƌĞĂ͕ ǁŚLJ ŶŽƚ ƵƟ ůŝnjĞ ƚŚĞ Ň Žǁ ĚŝƌĞĐƟ ŽŶ ŽĨ ƚŚĞƐĞ ĂůƌĞĂĚLJ ĞdžŝƐƟ ŶŐ ĐŽŶĚŝƟ ŽŶƐ ŽĨ ƚŚĞ ƌŽĂĚƐ ĂŶĚ ƚŚĞ ƵŶƵƐĞĚ ůŽƚƐ ƐĐĂƚͲ tered throughout Weinland Park to help catch, clean and possibly reuse the water. While doing so, the people and culture of the neighborhood must be taken into account, as these areas must be tailored to their needs as well. hŶƵƐĞĚ ƐƉĂĐĞͲŵŝŶŽƌ ƌŽĂĚƐ ƌĞůĂƟ ŽŶƐŚŝƉƐ ǁĞƌĞ ƐƉůŝƚ ŝŶƚŽ ϱ typologies: street crossers, street connectors, end caps, ĐŽƌŶĞƌ ĐŽŶŶĞĐƟ ŽŶƐ͕ ĂŶĚ ƐŝŶŐůĞƐ Žƌ ƐƚƌŝŶŐƐ͘ ĂĐŚ ƚLJƉŽůŽŐLJ was then given a basic program idea to spark individual design of each occurrence: wildlife ecologies for street
crossers, human ecological thru spaces of street connectors, detenƟ ŽŶ ƉŽŶĚƐ Ăƚ ƚŚĞ ĞŶĚ ĐĂƉƐ͕ ĐƵůƚƵƌĂů ŚƵďƐ ĨŽƌ ĐŽƌŶĞƌ ĐŽŶŶĞĐƚŽƌƐ͕ ĂŶĚ mixed use spaces determined by the residents for the singles and ƐƚƌŝŶŐƐ͘ ^ƚŽƌŵ ǁĂƚĞƌ ŵĂŶĂŐĞŵĞŶƚ ƉƌĂĐƟ ĐĞƐ ƚŽ ďĞ ŝŶƚĞŐƌĂƚĞĚ ǁŝůů ďĞ ĚĞƚĞƌŵŝŶĞĚ ďĂƐĞĚ ŽŶ ƚŚĞ ůŽĐĂƟ ŽŶ ŽĨ ĞĂĐŚ ƐŝƚĞ ǁŝƚŚ ƌĞŐĂƌĚƐ ƚŽ ƚŚĞ ĞdžŝƐƟ ŶŐ ƚŽƉŽŐƌĂƉŚLJ͘ I will focus my design on one of the corner connector areas that ocĐƵƌƐ Ăƚ Ă ůŽǁ ƉŽŝŶƚ ŝŶ ƚŚĞ ƐƚƌĞĞƚ ƌƵŶŽī Ň ŽǁƐ͘ dŚŝƐ ĂƌĞĂ ǁŝůů ƵƟ ůŝnjĞ the basements of the vacant houses previously on the site for waƚĞƌ ĐĂƚĐŚŵĞŶƚ ĂŶĚ Į ůƚƌĂƟ ŽŶ ƚŚƌŽƵŐŚ Ă ƐĞƌŝĞƐ ŽĨ ƉůĂŶƚ Į ůƚĞƌƐ ƐLJƐƚĞŵƐ͕ ĞǀĞŶƚƵĂůůLJ ďĞŝŶŐ ƵƟ ůŝnjĞĚ ĨŽƌ ŝƌƌŝŐĂƟ ŽŶ ŽĨ ĂŐƌŝĐƵůƚƵƌĂů ƉƌĂĐƟ ĐĞƐ ƉƌŽͲ posed for Weinland Park itself, as well as other parts of the neighborhood. Layered on top of this storm water management are places for leisure for the residents, as well as places to express musical and ĂƌƟ ƐƟ Đ ŽƵƚƉƵƚƐ͘
