Kennebunk High School Class of 2016 announces top 10 percent Steven Anastas

Steven, son of Jeff and Valerie Anastas of Kennebunk, is a member of the National Honor Society and captain’s club. He participated in several sports, including golf team, track and field, baseball and ski team. Steven received a golf scholarship in 2015 from a local foundation. He is pursuing a STEM certificate. Steven is attending UNE in the fall, majoring in pre-pharmacy.

Stephanie Ayotte Stephanie, of Kennebunk, daughter of Adrian Ayotte and Melinda Ricker, is an AP Scholar, an RIT Medal Award recipient, and a Silver Key Award and Honorable Mention recipient in the Scholastic Arts competition. She is a member of National Honor Society and KHS’s Model State Youth in Government program. A three-year member of the varsity field hockey team, Stephanie also ran track for two years. Stephanie will attend University of Southern Maine, where she will major in environmental science with a double minor in art and in mathematics.

Sydney Campbell Sydney, of Kennebunk, is the daughter of Stephanie Seiders. She

stage managed the past five KHS musicals, and participated in mock trial, youth in government, captain’s club and student senate. She is a member of the National Honor Society, and is an AP Scholar, and received the Wellesley Book Award. She will attend Colby College in the fall, and plans to study government.

Amy Eckland Amy, of Kennebunk, is the daughter of Jean and Kevin Eckland and is the valedictorian of her class. Amy is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Finalist, a recipient of the Yale Book Award, and a member of the National Honor Society. She has participated in model state, math team and captain’s club. Riding is Amy’s passion. She has volunteered at the Joydale Morgan Farm and at Carlisle Academy throughout high school. Amy will be attending Northwestern University to study the biological sciences.

Olivia Ferrick Olivia, of Kennebunk, the daughter of Sean and Cathy Ferrick, was the recipient of the Brandeis University Book Award. She is a member of National Honor Society and a captain of the cross-country team. Olivia is a co-leader of the clubs peer helpers and girl talk, is a student council officer, and participated in Model State and Model UN. In the fall, she will attend College of the Holy Cross.

Ashley Kayser

Ashley, of Kennebunk, daughter of Manuela LorenziKayser and Steve Kayser, has been on the math, cross-country, and swim teams, and French club. An AP Scholar, she is a recipient of the Rensselaer Medal Award for math and science. Ashley will enter the University of Maine honors program, where she plans to major in environmental science.

Shae Kingston Shae, of Kennebunkport, is the daughter of Jeni and Steve Kingston. She is a member of the KHS chamber choir, captain’s club, National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Shae served on the Class of 2016 executive council for all four years of high school, and participated in numerous theater productions. She was the 2016 MPA Principal’s Award recipient, and will be attending Columbia University.

Kristen Koch Kristen, of Kennebunkport, is the daughter of Gary and Patricia Koch. Her involvement at Kennebunk High School over the past four years has included participation in varsity field hockey, varsity

lacrosse, Model State, National Honor Society, Peer Helpers and various other activities. She will be attending Elon University next year majoring in strategic communications and marketing. Kristen would like to congratulate her fellow graduates and wish them all the best in their future pursuits.

Joelle Krause Joelle, of Kennebunkport, daughter of Kathleen and Jonathan Krause, is a four-year member of the varsity soccer team and outdoor track and field team, serving as a captain of both teams in her senior year. She is a member of the National Honor Society and a STEM Certificate Scholar. and has received the Society of Women in Engineering Award. Joelle will be attending Clark University in the fall, majoring in business and management.

Marshall Lowery Marshall, of Arundel, is the daughter of Jamie and Leia Lowery. She was captain of the KHS and NYCY swim teams, participated in chamber choir, math team and captain’s club, and is in both National Honor Society and Tri-M Music Honor Society. Lauren Ludwig Lauren, of Kennebunk, daughter of Phil and Joan Ludwig, has been involved with debate team and math team. She was selected and attended the Institute for Quantum Cryptography Program at University of Waterloo and Yale University’s Young Global Scholars Program for politics/law. She studied classical piano and played the flute in band. She is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Lauren will take a gap year before attending college to study biology/pre-med.

Mia Noble Mia, of Arundel, daughter of Kraig and Amy Noble, is a member of the National Honor Society, captain’s club and track. She participated in the Maine Irish Children’s Program, Model State, soccer and yearbook, and volunteered at the Bunker. She received the RIT Computing Medal Award. Mia plans to attend Elon University in North Carolina.

Carlton Robie Carlton, of Kennebunk, is the son of Glenn Robie and Beth Simpson-Robie. He is an Interna-tional Bac-calaureate diploma student, a member of the National Honor Society, and an elected member of the Class of 2016 executive council. Carlton’s activities include peer helpers, student council, two KHS winter musical productions and marshal for the Class of 2015. A three-sport athlete for all four years, Carlton was one of the captains of the football team and a captain of the track team both junior and senior years. He particularly enjoyed being a partner on KHS’ first unified basketball team. His special recognitions include a Campbell Football All-Conference Super Award, a Western Maine Conference Citizenship award, and a Scholar Athlete award from the Maine chapter of the National Football Foundation. Carlton cochaired the WGME School Spirit Challenge for the Good Shepherd Food Bank at KHS. He plans to study business administration and kinesiology/sports studies in the honors program at the University of New Hampshire.

Kyra Schwartzman Kyra, of Kennebunk, is the daughter of Joe and Edie Schwartzman. An Interna-tional Bac-calaureate Diploma candidate, three-time All-Conference player, US Lacrosse Academic

class of 2016 All American, SMAA and WMC Academic All Conference and Western Maine Conference Citizenship Award recipient, Kyra is a four-year starter and captain on the lacrosse and soccer teams. She is also a member of the National Honor Society, peer helpers, unified basketball team and the girl talk program. Kyra will attend Merrimack College to play lacrosse and participate in the honors program, majoring in athletic training.

Julia Towne Julia, of Kennebunk, is the daughter of Michelle and William Towne. She played varsity volleyball and softball, and was volleyball captain her senior year. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and the captain’s club at KHS. Julia received the Smith Book Award during her junior year, and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma candidate. She will attend the University of Maine and major in bioengineering with a focus toward biomedical engineering.

KHS grads enter next phase with pride By BRAD SPIEGEL Special to Journal Tribune KENNEBUNK — The theme for the 167 seniors who graduated from Kennebunk High School Sunday afternoon was that no matter what

is in store for them in the future, it will be much different than their past four years on Fletcher Street. Whether it is college, a trade or a gap year, the “bubble that is Kennebunk High School,” as val-

edictorian Amy Eckland dubbed it, will no longer protect them. But, as salutatorian William O’Neil pointed out, those who were seated at KHS Stadium during the blustery, sunny day will be wellprepared. “Our class is extremely diverse,” he said. “We have a unique perspective that will allow us to solve the complex problems (we will face).” O’Neil noted that the 141st graduating class will move on to a wide array of distinguished schools across the country, and that there are 11 International Baccalaureate candidates – the most in the school’s history. Eckland warned her peers that any accomplishments achieved up to this point will not matter in the next chapter in their lives – but also reminded them that they have

been prepared to take on almost anything. “No matter where you go from here … I guarantee there will be something you are not prepared for,” she said. “But we all have accomplishments, whether we’ve been recognized or not.” Michael Laverriere, a guidance counselor at KHS who was chosen by the class to give the faculty address, asked the graduates to remember to be positive, respectful and kind. When they are faced with a life dilemma, they should think before acting, he added. “The one freedom in life you have control over is the freedom to choose how you respond,” he said. BHS graduates define their own success

By ALAN BENNETT Staff Writer BIDDEFORD — No, it’s not Halloween. But on a cool Friday night, Waterhouse Field was a sea of black and orange as parents, current and former students and members of the public gathered Friday night to watch Biddeford High School graduate 181 seniors in the Class of 2016. “I’m most excited to share this last moment with our class. It’s our last memory together,” Charlotte St. Louis, co-salutatorian, said before marching onto the field with her sister, Nicole, who is also co-salutatorian. “I’m excited to see what everybody does in the future. I know some people are really going far and it’ll be interesting to see what everybody does with that,” Nicole St. Louis said. Senior Class President AnnaMarie Seiler welcomed the crowd by charging graduates to take chances and accept life’s challenges with strong will. “Know your fear, but don’t let it stop you,” Seiler said, as she admitted to her own nerves speaking in front of the crowd. “I’m afraid, you’re afraid, we’re all afraid, but that’s the point. theme of this year’s graduation, as was a strong focus on personal success – the definition of which the speakers let graduates determine for themselves. “The only success we need is the success we define for ourselves,” said Student Council President Taylor Turgeon, addressing the crowd. Turgeon, who will be studying broadcast journalism at Elon University in the fall, also encouraged graduates to accept their failures. “Don’t dwell on your failures,” Turgeon said. “Grow from them.” Ruth Shaw, a science teacher at BHS, was selected by students as the commencement speaker, and offered words of encouragement for the graduates. Shaw spoke of overcoming adversity and remembering one’s roots, and shared fond memories from her time with the Class of 2016. “Remember high school. It’s the time you think you know it all but you don’t,” Shaw said, speaking to graduates about new beginnings. Shaw called on graduates to not take their friends and families for granted, and to always be kind, trustworthy and proud. “Will you like what you see when the reflection of your past looks back at you and your

life’s legacy?” Shaw asked of the graduates. “You have to want to succeed, and be proud of who you are … you are the world’s gift. Share you with the world.” “Always stay true to yourself … do not let anyone define you,” Valedictorian Kirsten Lebreux said. “Embrace each opportunity with an eager, hopeful mind. Let yourselves lead a trail others will be proud to follow.” BHS Principal Jeremie Sirois closed the ceremony by saying the Class of 2016 has left its mark on the school and the city of Biddeford, and said the school is beginning to realize its full potential. “Coming to BHS was the greatest professional decision of my life. Biddeford High School has 11 top scholars in Class of 2016 Kirsten Lebreux Kirsten, valedictorian of her class, summa cum Laude, is the daughter of Alan Lebreux and Karen Ruel of Biddeford. Kirsten received the 2016 MPA Principal’s Award and 2015 Princeton Book Award. During her four years at Biddeford High School, Kirsten served as student representative on the Biddeford School Committee, treasurer of student council, vice president of the Rotary Interact Club, member of National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, BHS Kickoff mentor and student member of the BHS Leadership NEASC committee. Kirsten was a four-year varsity athlete, participating in cheering, indoor track and softball, also earning recognition on SMAA AllAcademic teams, All-Conference

team, Coaches Awards and the Golden Tiger Award. She is a senior captain of her softball team, and a 2014 State and New England cheerleading champion. In the fall, Kirsten will be attending Bentley University, where she will major in accounting.

Mikayla Guay Mikayla, cum laude, is the daughter of Darlene Gregoire and Dana Guay. Throughout her four years at BHS, Mikayla has participated in Student Council, Interact, National Technical Honor Society and dance. She was elected the president of both the National Honor Society and the Student Leadership Council. She was also named the DAR Good Citizen of BHS. In the fall, she will attend Suffolk University where she will study radiation therapy and oncology.

Peyton Janelle Peyton, magna cum laude, is the daughter of Robert and Cheryl Janelle of Biddeford. During her years at BHS, Peyton has served as the vice president of the student council and has been actively involved in the KO Mentoring Program, Interact, and National Honor Society, and served as a student representative for NEASC. Peyton was also selected to be a recipient of the 2016 SMAA Good Citizenship Award for BHS. She played varsity soccer all four years, and was named all conference. Carson Neumann Carson, magna cum laude, is the son of Joan and Casey Neumann. Throughout his high school career, he has participated in many activities that connected him to Biddeford High School and the community surrounding it. He is the vice president of his class, as well as the secretary of Interact. He is also a member of the National Honor Society, freshman mentoring, and serves as a tutor for all subjects within the school. He is a three-sport athlete participating in football, indoor and outdoor track and field. During his senior seasons, he was the captain of the track team. In the fall, Carson will be attending the University of Maine, majoring in civil and environmental engineering.

Benjamin S. Plante Benjamin is the son of Steven and April Plante of Biddeford. During his years at Biddeford High School, Ben has been a runner and captain of the cross country and track teams. Ben participated in National Honor Society, Interact Club, and has taken several advanced placement courses. He has been awarded All Academic status and the Tiger Pride character award. He will be attending Saint Joseph’s College in the fall, and will be majoring in finance while continuing to run cross country and track.

AnnaMarie Seiler AnnaMarie is the daughter of Andrew and Kelly Seiler of Biddeford. During her four years at Biddeford High School,

class of 2016 AnnaMarie participated in student council, National Honor Society, year-round soccer, mentoring and tutoring, and was the president of her class. As the captain of her premiere soccer team, she also volunteered often at Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital in Portland. She made the All-Academic team senior year for soccer, as well as all-conference honorable mention her sophomore year as the starting varsity goalkeeper. In the fall, AnnaMarie will be attending Mount Ida College, where she will major in psychology with a minor in education.

Taylor Turgeon Taylor, magna cum laude, is the daughter of Jeff and Tina Turgeon of Biddeford. During her time at Biddeford High School, she participated in varsity field hockey, ice hockey and lacrosse for all four years, and was voted team captain for all three sports her senior year. She broke the BHS all-time assist record in field hockey, and now holds the record for all-time goals and all-time assists in lacrosse. Taylor was also a representative on student council her freshman and sophomore years, and was voted president-at-large as a junior and student body president as a senior. She was an editor of the yearbook, a staff writer for the school newspaper, a kickoff mentor for freshmen, a junior volunteer for Southern Maine Health Care and a National Honor Society

inductee. In the fall, Taylor will be attending Elon University to study communications.

Charlotte White Charlotte, magna cum laude, is the daughter of Jay and Brenda White of Biddeford. Throughout

Massabesic High School announces top 10 percent of Class of 2016 Emily Wasina

Emily Wasina, the valedictorian of the Class of 2016, is the daughter of Richard and Kelly Wasina of Waterboro. She participated in cross country and outdoor track for four years during high school and was named captain of the outdoor track team her senior year. During her freshman and sophomore years, she was also a member of the indoor track team. Emily was selected All Conference for cross-country in her freshman, junior, and senior years and MVP for the last two. Emily is a member of the National Honor Society and the student athletic leadership council. She participated in concert band and volunteered for the Unified Basketball team and at Carlisle Academy Integrative Equine Therapy & Sports. Other awards include the EB White Award and the DAR Essay contest winner as a sophomore, the Princeton Book Award and Phi Beta Kappa Award her junior year. Her senior year, she was awarded the MPA Principals’ Award. Emily plans to attend the University of New England to pursue a degree in occupational therapy.

Nathan Baert Nathan Baert, salutatorian of the Class of 2016, is the son of Thomas and Deanna Baert of North Waterboro. He participated in basketball and football his first two years of high school and continued to play football through senior year when he was named team captain. Nathan was selected to the SMAA All Academic Team starting his sophomore year and was name Most Improved Player for football his junior year. He received the Defensive MVP Award, second Team All Conference Award and the Coach’s Award his senior year. Nathan participated in the Science Olympiad during his sophomore, junior and senior years and added math team and captains’ council

to his schedule as a senior. In the Science Olympiad, he placed fourth in geologic mapping and received a silver medal in hydrogeology. Nathan is currently working on his Eagle Project for Boy Scout Troop 320. He also has been a coach for a Waterboro Recreation basketball team and has volunteered at Camp Laughing Loon. Nathan’s other academic achievements include various Student of the Month awards, high honor roll for four years, and an AP Scholar Award. He will be attending the University of Maine with a dual major in civil engineering and business management.

Steele MuchemoreAllen Steele MuchemoreAllen, ranked third in the Class of 2016, and the class honor essayist, is the son of Samantha Muchemore-Allen and Scot Allen of West Newfield. During high school, Steele participated in the all academic gifted and talented program. He was also a member of the math team in his junior and senior years. Steele will attend the University of Maine and major in civil engineering.

Sierra Arral Sierra Arral is the daughter of Tammy Macedo of Waterboro. She has been a member of the varsity soccer team and student council during high school. For her first two years, she participated in varsity cheerleading and math team, and her last two years, she was a member of the National Honor Society and was the RSU 57 School Board youth liaison, through which she attended the Maine School Management Association Conference. She has volunteered at the Alfred Apple Festival. Sierra attended the TEDx Conference her freshman year and has assisted with the MHS American Red Cross blood drive each year. She was the student council vice president her senior year, and her junior year, she was the class treasurer and par-

ticipated on the student advisory committee. Sierra played on the varsity lacrosse team her freshmen, sophomore, and junior years, and she received various academic awards for high honors and honors in multiple subjects with highestgrade awards in Spanish III, biology, AP biology, and AP government. Her athletic achievements include being named to the SMAA All Academic Team for varsity cheering, varsity soccer, and varsity lacrosse. She received an award for the National Women’s U.S. Lacrosse High School All Academic Team and was recognized as the Most Valuable Defensive Player her junior year. Sierra has been accepted at Manhattan College in Riverdale, New York, and will study marketing and economics.

Connor Bourassa Connor Bourassa is the son of Paul Bourassa of Franklin, Massachusetts, and Tracey Bourassa of Lyman. Connor was a member of the culture club for three years and became a member of the civil rights club his senior year. During junior year, Connor was a camp counselor for the Maine Environmental Summer Session for Youth at the University of Maine at Machias and represented Massabesic High School and the State of Maine at the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Boston, where he received an Award of Excellence. For four years, he was a volunteer during the summer at Joydale Morgan Farm and during his junior and senior years, he also worked at Shaw’s Supermarket. Connor maintained honor roll throughout high school. His awards include the College of the Atlantic Book award and The Society of the Torch and Laurel Award. Connor will be attending Unity College, and he plans to become a wildlife biologist.

Brandon Bowles Brandon Bowles is the son of Randall and Jennifer Bowles of

North Waterboro. During high school, he has been a member of the math team and has participated in lacrosse and wrestling. He will attend the University of Connecticut to study biochemistry.

Danielle Burbank Danielle Burbank is the daughter of Craig and Shelley Burbank of Limerick. In her freshmen year, Danielle was a member of GSTA and Amnesty International and then participated in NJROTC her sophomore and junior years. During her senior year, she was involved in student government as the class secretary and was part of the yearbook staff. Danielle plans to attend Flagler College in Florida.

Troy Cloutier Troy Cloutier is the son of Erik and Laurie Cloutier of Waterboro. He participated in cross-country and outdoor track all four years of high school and was a member of the indoor track team during his freshmen, sophomore, and senior years. His senior year, he also participated in the Science Olympiad. As a sophomore and junior, he received the Coach’s Award for indoor track and was MVP-Honored Student Athlete his senior year. Troy’s future plans are to attend the University of Maine with a major in pre-medicine medical occupations.

Alecia Connolly Alecia Connolly is the daughter of Paul and Patricia

Connolly of Shapleigh. She has been a member of her church youth ministry during high school and was a member of the regional fine arts program for modern dance her freshmen year and for oil painting her sophomore year. As a junior and senior, she became a member of the Catholic Youth Leadership Team through her church and at school was inducted into the National Honor Society. She attended the Sanford Regional Technical Center for digital design. Alecia worked on the high school yearbook her senior year and maintained high honors throughout high school. Other awards include Student of the Month, National Technical Honor Society and the St. Thomas Book Award her junior year. Alecia volunteered at the Shapleigh Community Library and with the Toys for Tots campaign. Alecia plans to attend Mount Ida College in Massachusetts.

Richard Cote III Richard Cote III is the son of Richard Cote Jr. of Waterboro and Tina Cote of Saco. Richard was a varsity member of the crosscountry team and the outdoor and indoor track teams from freshmen through senior year. He earned honor roll grades throughout high school and was inducted into the National Honor Society his senior year. He will be attending Franklin Pierce University in the fall, and he plans to become a doctor of physical therapy. He plans to continue involvement in cross-country and track while in college.

Hannah Duffy Hannah Duffy is the daughter of Martin and Donna Duffy of Waterboro. During high school, through private lessons, she studied piano and violin. Her junior year, she became a member of the Portland Youth Junior Orchestra. As a senior she joined the Portland Youth

Faith Hoyle Faith Hoyle is the daughter of Michael and Julie Hoyle of Alfred. She has been a member of the crosscountry team for three years and participated in indoor track for two years. During her sophomore year, Faith spent a semester attending school at the Coastal Studies for Girls program in Freeport. As a junior, Faith was inducted into the National Honor Society and attended Girls State. Faith has also been a member of the Massabesic Outing Club. She will be attending the University of Maine in the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture, where she will major in marine science.

Zachary Huff Zachary is the son of Richard and Priscilla Huff of North Waterboro. He participated in outdoor and indoor track and in the indoor and outdoor soccer program. Zachary was named Student of the Month several times during high school, received the SMAA Athletic Award and maintained high honors each year. Zachary attends St. Matthews Church in Limerick, and in the fall he will attend the University of Southern Maine.

Aaron Leach Aaron Leach is the son of James and Valerie Leach of East Waterboro. Aaron was a member of the cross-country team for two years and participated in the Science Olympiad for three years,

class of 2016 earning two silver medals and one bronze medal. At the high school, Aaron participated in jazz band, pep band, and concert band, and in the community, he was a member of the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble and the Portland Youth Symphony Orchestra. Through the regional fine arts program, Aaron participated in a jazz improvisation class. Aaron will major in music at the State University of New York at Potsdam, New York.

Justin Leach Justin Leach is the son of James and Valerie Leach of East Waterboro. He played trombone in the Maine All State Band his sophomore year and in the Maine All State Orchestra, the Boston Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Saco River Jazz Ensemble his junior and senior years. Justin also participated in the Science Olympiad for the last three years of high school, and he received a bronze medal for “Dynamic Planet” his sophomore year and a silver medal for “Write it-Do it” his junior year. He was a Maine Boys State delegate his junior year. Justin plans to attend the University of New Hampshire.

Keilly Lynch Keilly Lynch is the daughter of Michael and Deborah Lynch of Lyman. She participated in soccer, indoor track, and lacrosse during high school. She was captain of the soccer team her senior year, received the Coach’s Award for indoor track her sophomore year, and was named as the Thoroughbred Champion in lacrosse her sophomore year and as the Most Improved Player her junior year. Keilly was also selected SMAA All Academic Team for the last three years in all three sports. She was a youth filly lacrosse coach for four years and maintained high honors throughout her high school career. Keilly was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society her last two years of high school. She placed first in the freshmen film festival her freshman year and her

junior year she was a New England Student Leadership Conference delegate and was treasurer for the captain’s council at the high school. In the fall, Keilly will attend the University of Maine Farmington, majoring in elementary education.

Roshelle Morrison Roshelle Morrison is the daughter of George and Rose Morrison of Limerick. She participated in varsity soccer and indoor track as a freshman. Roshelle continued with varsity indoor track and participated in varsity cross-country her sophomore through her senior years, and she was named to the All Conference Second Team for cross-country as a junior. She was a member of the Seacoast United Soccer Club for four years and became captain of the soccer team her senior year. Roshelle maintained high honors throughout high school and received academic awards in honors geometry, honors geographical science, honors precalculus, honors biology, health, creative graphic communications, and Spanish. She was also treasurer of the National Honor Society and was a member of the math team her junior and senior years, winning a math team award her junior year. Roshelle was selected SMAA All Academic Team for all sports during high school and was Most Improved Player for cross-country in her sophomore and junior years. She also received the Max Brooks Reading Award her sophomore year and the Regis College Book Award her junior year. Roshelle volunteered for the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital, at the Limerick Public Library, at various soccer clinics, at Mary’s Walk, at the Mustang 5K Road Race, and at numerous other events in southern Maine. She will attend Saint Anselm College in the fall. Rochelle will major in biochemistry in preparation for a career in pediatric oncology.

Jane Pettit Jane Pettit is the daughter of Jerry and Jennifer Pettit of Limerick. Jane participated in theater as both

an actor and a director during her time in high school. She joined the Science Olympiad her sophomore year and received a gold medal her junior year and a silver medal her senior year. Jane has been a member of the National Honor Society and president for the MHS civil rights team for two years. Her junior year, she was chosen for the Stonehill College Book Award, and her senior year, she was chosen for the President’s Volunteer Service Award. Jane also placed first in the Lions Club Speak Out Contest her freshmen and sophomore years and moved to the state level competition her junior year. In the fall, she will attend the University of Maine at Fort Kent to study biology with a concentration in environmental studies.

Matthew Prokey Matthew Prokey is the son of Donald and Sally Prokey of East Waterboro. During his four years in high school, Matthew played for the golf and basketball teams. Maintaining high honors, he was selected for the All Academic Team and was inducted into the National Honor Society. He joined the student council his junior year and became student council treasurer his senior year. He will be attending the University of New England in the fall, enrolled in the physician’s assistant program.

Margaret Redman Margaret Redman is the daughter of Noell and Dawn Redman. As a sophomore, Margaret played field hockey and lacrosse, and for field hockey, she received the Hustle Award. She was selected for the All Academic Team for lacrosse her sophomore year and for field hockey her junior and senior years. Margaret was also named captain of the field hockey team and to the SMAA All Conference 2nd Team. She was named MVP her last two years of high school. Margaret was also the captain of the outdoor track team and was a Unified Basketball partner. Margaret’s junior year, she received

the Principal’s Character Award, and her senior year, the Julia Clukey Courage Award and the SMAA Citizenship Award. Her junior year, she was inducted into the National Honor Society, and she volunteered in the athletic director’s office during grades 11 and 12. During her junior year, she also volunteered at Alfred Elementary School and for the Alfred Parks and Recreation field hockey program. Margaret will continue her education at Maine Maritime Academy in the fall, majoring in marine transportation operations. She hopes to travel the world as captain of a cargo ship.

Ashley Russell Ashley Russell is the daughter of David and Jennifer Russell of Alfred. Ashley played soccer for her first three years of high school and then became a kindergarten soccer coach for Massabesic United Soccer Club her senior year. Ashley was also a member of both the indoor and outdoor track teams and was named captain for both teams her senior year. During high school, Ashley volunteered at Lakeside Community Church as a nursery, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten assistant. Ashley assisted with the clothing drive for the Massabesic Closet her junior year and is a member of the National Honor Society. As a junior, she received the Massabesic Lions Club Youth Volunteer Award. Ashley would like to teach English in other countries and will pursue a degree in elementary education at the University of Maine.

Madison Russell Madison Russell is the daughter of Mark and Jennifer Russell of Waterboro. While in high school, Madison participated in soccer for three years and varsity ice hockey and lacrosse for four years. With the lacrosse team, Madison was part of the Western Maine Class A championship team her freshmen year and the Class A state championship team her sophomore year, when she was awarded the Thoroughbred Award for her team. For ice hockey, she was chosen for the Sportsmanship Award her sophomore year and was captain her senior year. Madison was SMAA All Academic Team for ice hockey and lacrosse every year of high school and for soccer her sophomore and junior years. She was a filly youth lacrosse coach for four years and was named to the U.S. Lacrosse All Academic Team for the last three. Madison’s role as class president began her sophomore year, and in her junior and senior years, she added student council to her activity list, assuming the role of student council co-secretary her senior year. She also participated in the math team, National Honor Society and culture club. Her other achievements include being a Maine Youth Leadership delegate and a SMAA Student Leadership Summit delegate her sophomore year and the New England Student Leadership Conference delegate her junior year, the same year she was awarded the Williams College Book award. Madison has also been a member of Girl Scouts for 12 years and has volunteered at numerous locations in southern Maine. Madison will attend the University of Rhode Island; she plans to pursue a doctorate in pharmacy.

Erica Suttles Erica Suttles is the daughter of Chad Suttles of Lula, Georgia, and Jennifer Whatley of Alfred. Erica has been a member of the student council for four years and became co-secretary her senior year. She also held the position of secretary for the culture club her sophomore and junior years and is the senior class treasurer. She has performed in several theater productions. Erica joined the junior varsity volleyball team her senior year. As a freshman she was a member of the zero waste club, and her sophomore year, she participated in the community bottle and food drive planning committee. Erica volunteered with community organizations ranging from the local food pantry, to the Toys for Tots campaign and the American Red Cross. Erica maintained high honors and was given an academic award for her performance in Spanish, was named Student of the Month, and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Massabesic graduates take ‘ride like no other’

By ALAN BENNETT Staff Writer PORTLAND — The Cross Insurance Arena was packed with friends and family Thursday night, as 220 Massabesic Mustangs – adorned in green and white robes, silken stoles and medallions of various colors – received their diplomas from Massabesic High School. “No matter what your next plans are, you represent opportunity and potential for yourselves, your families, your state and ultimately your nation,” Massabesic High School Principal Christian Elkington said to the Class of 2016 as he welcomed the crowd. “Your education has given each of you multiple opportunities and hope to take advantage of. The staff of MHS believe in your hopes and dreams.” Students could be heard cheering from the halls of the arena before marching to their seats. Many were excited about leaving high school, but took the time to reflect on their years at MHS, saying their experience helped shaped them as they prepare to enter college, the armed forces or the job market. “It’s time, you know, to move on to the next stage of my life,” said Surafel Zunser, a graduating senior who in the fall will be attending Thomas College in Waterville for sports management. “You go on an adventure freshman year to senior year. It’s a big jump. You go through a lot of things you’ve never went through and senior year you realize how much you’ve done. But there will be challenges moving forward, cautioned Superintendent John Davis, who will be retiring at the end of this school year. “Life does not get easier,” Davis said. “Most people agree it gets harder and more challenging. But being harder does not mean worse. Your generation will have to confront all the issues my generation hasn’t addressed or hasn’t figured out how to address. I believe you are up to the challenge.” Those challenges lead to resilience. That was the theme of Thursday night’s graduation, echoed by two top scholars in the Class of 2016. “We’ve all had lows, whether it be a sports injury, a failed test or a failed relationship. resilient,” Roshelle Morrison, who is graduating fourth in the class, said to the crowd. “We’ve been counting down the days and now we are here, all our paths our crossing one last time before we embark on our next journey.” Valedictorian Emily Wasina told her peers to always think positive, in addition to maintaining character and a strong work ethic. “Positive thinking allows you to see all the possibilities in your life. Choosing to make the best of any situation allows you to build resilience and build character,” Wasina said in her address to the audience. Wasina referenced her younger brother, who has suffered from Lyme disease since he was young and can no longer walk, as an example of someone who does not give up, encouraging her peers to follow his example. “He never gives up, no matter what challenges he faces,” Wasina said of her brother. “Oftentimes we can’t control what happens in life, so whatever you want in your life, have a positive attitude, work hard and maintain good character.” Principal Elkington wished graduates the best, saying their lives will be defined by their good actions and intentions. “You’re going to have naysayers who throughout your life will tell you you’re not good enough. Old Orchard Beach High School announces top scholars of 2016 Erik Miles Hogan

Erik, valedictorian of his class, graduated with a 4.0 GPA and was president of the Class of 2016. He was vice president of the National Honor Society, and a two-year member. He was the only freshman to win Saco Bay Rotary Student of the Month award. Erik was recipient of the Dartmouth College Book award for most outstanding student and a member of Natural Helpers for two years. He was a five-time First Team All Conference athlete – one-time football, two-time basketball and two-time outdoor track. He was also a seven-time Journal Tribune First Team All Star – three-time Outdoor Track, two-time basketball and two-time football. Erik made the academic team in football and basketball and was a Western Maine Conference Senior All Star basketball game participant. Erik completed more than 70 registered hours of community service. He will be attending Springfield College to major in applied exercise science, where he will play basketball and outdoor track.

Josh Kennie Josh, the salutatorian of his class, is the son of John and Susan Kennie and older brother to Jacob Kennie. Josh received high and highest honors throughout high school, was vice president of the Class of 2016, and was an active member of student council. In his junior year, Josh was inducted into National Honor Society. In October, Josh was named Student of the Month by the Saco Biddeford Rotary Club. Josh plans to return to the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology to finish the electrical technology program and pursue a career in the electrical field.

Mariah I. Bouthiller Mariah Isabella is the daughter of Pierre Jean Paul Bouthiller. An

avid lover of both helping and learning, she has spent her high school years striving to gain as much knowledge as possible, while lending a hand to her peers whenever she could. Mariah was drum major with the marching band, an active member of National Honor Society, Natural Helpers and jazz choir, a volunteer at Loranger Middle School teaching music, and a full time worker outside of school. She plans to attend Minerva Schools in San Francisco to study computational and natural science, and she hopes to become an agricultural engineer.

Kiley Breitenfeld Kiley is the daughter of Tracy Albert and Dale Breitenfeld. She was born in Bartlett, New Hampshire, and moved to Old Orchard Beach for high school. As a freshman, Kiley took part in many activities, including Natural Helpers, Interact Club and softball. By junior year, she helped in the prom committee, was secretary of the student council, and was co-secretary in student government. Kiley was chosen to join the National Honor Society her junior year, and elected president her senior year. Kiley also went to vocational school, where she took part in the CNA/Health Assistant course, and was chosen as student of the month in February. Through that course work, Kiley decided she wanted to be a nurse, and will be majoring in nursing at Salve Regina University in Newport, Rhode Island. Kiley achieved honors all four years, and will be graduating sixth in her class.

Jenny Cobb Jenny is the daughter of Glenn and Peggy Cobb. She was on the field hockey team for four years, and was a captain her senior year. At school, she was a member of

Natural Helpers, Interact, International Club (where she recently traveled to Belize) and the facilities committee. She was also National Honor Society treasurer, student council vice president, and the treasurer of her class. She was enrolled in legal studies at the Biddeford Regional Center of Technology, where she was also a member of the leadership council as the secretary and the National Technical Honors Society. In school, she earned high and highest honors throughout the semester, was a recipient of the Bowdoin Book award in 2015, and was on the Western Maine Conference First Team for field hockey. Post graduation, her plan is to attend Southern Maine Community College majoring in criminal justice with a minor in French or German. Jenny’s lifelong goal is to work with federal agencies, expanding her law enforcement career. Out of school, she enjoys working at Hid’n Pines Family Campground and being a part of the Saco Explorers. Jenny enjoys spending weekends with her uncle and grandmother. She has always loved and enjoyed helping people, no matter how small the task, which has helped her in making her decision to go into law enforcement.

Rebekka Joensen Rebekka, daughter of Jonhard and Debbie Joensen and younger sister of Steffan Joensen, was vice president of her class freshman, sophomore and junior year, a member of student council all four years and president her senior year. She was a member and secretary of the National Honors Society, participated in prom committee, Interact Club, Natural Helpers and Spanish club, and was on the soccer and softball teams. Rebekka will be attending Thomas College in the fall with a double major in English and international business.

Nick LaCourse

Nick was involved in class government for all four years, and was president for two. He was in drama club all four years as an actor, and was general manager during his senior year. Nick also played the alto saxophone for the three years he was in the marching band. He was a volunteer for the Southern Maine Agency on Aging, where he participated in more than 100 hours of community service. During his junior year, Nick received the Eagle Scout award from the Boy Scouts of America. He was also selected to be the student representative to the RSU 23 School Board his senior year. Nick will be attending the University of New Hampshire to major in political science and international affairs.

Zachary Maksut Zachary is the son of John and Mary Maksut and the brother of John Maksut II. Throughout high school, Zachary received high and highest honors. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society. Junior year, he was selected as Student of the Month for the Saco Bay Rotary Club and the Biddeford Center of Technology. He played two years of basketball and baseball. In the fall, he plans to attend Southern Maine Community College for electrical engineering technology, and later continue his education at the University of Maine.

Sydney Pettey Sydney will be attending the University of Maine at Presque Isle, majoring in biology with a pre-med focus. Over the four years of high school,

she participated in Interact Club, drama vlub, where she was stage manager for her senior year, and National Honor Society, where she was historian for her senior year. During senior year, she took “Intro to Medical Science” at Biddeford Regional Center of Technology. At BRCOT, she was in the National Technical Honor Society and the student leadership council. Outside of school, she enjoys being with friends and family, helping out in the community and watching Netflix.

Cady Phalen Cady has participated in several activities throughout her high school career. She was an active member of her drama club for three years, including her run as technical manager in her senior year. Cady played one year of tennis, and mentored with eighth graders for a semester, as well as aiding in the middle school library. Next year, Cady will be attending the University of Maine at Farmington to pursue a degree in secondary English education.

From small community sprouts big dreams OOB High graduates 57 students By TAMMY WELLS Senior Staff Writer OLD ORCHARD BEACH — Small school, big hearts, caring community. Many alluded to all three as 57 Old Orchard Beach High School seniors became graduates on a foggy, drizzly Sunday afternoon. Undercover at the Seaside Pavilion, student speakers spoke of how well they knew each other. They spoke of teachers about to retire, of those who helped them along the way, of parents and grandparents, and the bonds of friendship that tie them all together. With such a small class, it becomes a family, pointed out graduate Jenny Cobb, who introduced the speakers. Before the ceremonies, students gathered together to prepare – to straighten their caps, to decide which way the tassel was supposed to go, to pose for photos and hug and chat. They spoke of nerves and excitement and of their future plans. Brandon Saucier, whose family owns the Ocean Walk Hotel, plans to study hospitality management

at Southern Maine Community College to prepare him for his role in the family business. Grace Letze will study anthropology and sociology at the University of Maine in Farmington; O’Brian Gentley plans to study auto repair; Chenoa Ingham is undecided but drawn to dog grooming; Elizabeth Harlan will take up earth and environmental studies at Unity College. It’s a small school and in the country, Harlan pointed out. “I’m looking forward to it,” she said. Christian Card plans to study early childhood education at Biddeford Center of Technology. Nick Watkins, whose mother Ruth said she is the first student with Down Syndrome to graduate from OOB High, had this to say about graduating Sunday: “Happy.” The Old Orchard Beach High School Chorus sang “Star Spangled Banner.” The high school band played “Home” and “Opening Night on Broadway.” Principal John Suttie touched on a couple of themes, including decision making. “The decisions you make in the

Nicholas LaCourse thanked family, faculty and friends for all they’d done to support the students. “Parents and friends, we love you. From all of us, to all of you, thank you,” he said. Mariah Bouthiller spoke of lessons learned – among them, to be kind to everyone, and that community is everything. “We are family here,” she said. Valedictorian Erik Hogan spoke of hard work, balancing academics and athletics, and being inspired by loved ones along the way. Hogan spoke of a special person in his life: his grandmother, Faith Hogan, who passed away a

few years ago. “She was the spark that ignited my ambitions,” he said. “She was my biggest fan.” Salutatorian Joshua Kennie urged his fellow graduates to set goals in life. And he also spoke about community.

Sanford High School announces top 10 of the Class of 2016 Matthew Webber

Matthew, the valedictorian of the Class of 2016, is the son of Steven and Gertraud Webber of Springvale. He was vice-president of his class. Webber plans to attend the University of Maine in Orono in September and major in chemical engineering. He was a member of the National Honor Society. He played soccer and baseball, had been on the swim team for much of his high school career, and was captain of the varsity soccer team. Webber was an assistant coach of Little League, a youth soccer referee and camp counselor, and is a member of the Key Club.

Rebecca Campbell Rebecca, the salutatorian of the Class of 2016, is the daughter of Stephen and Nancy Campbell of Sanford. She is a member of the National Honor Society and Key Club, has been involved in cross country for the past three years, and was captain of the cross country team this year. Campbell has run track for all of her high school career, and has been involved in swimming as a senior. She was a member of the school’s civil rights team, volunteered with Sunday school at Curtis Lake Church, and danced with two local troupes. She plans to study biology at the University of Maine in Orono.

Shannon Alexis Lebel Shannon is the daughter of Stephen Lebel and Susan

Genest, and lives in Springvale. A member of the National Honor Society, she has also been involved with the Mock Trial group, Peer Helpers, Sportsman Club and Key Club during her high school career. Lebel has played field hockey and varsity lacrosse. She was involved with New England Hockeymates field hockey, with the Sister Wish group and a nanny to five children, and volunteered with Southern Maine Health Care. She plans to major in biology and minor in neuroscience with a pre-med track at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania.

Hannah Rossignol Hannah is the daughter of David and Anna Rossignol of Sanford. She is treasurer of the National Honor Society, has been involved with Key Club in various capacities during her high school years, was a member of the homecoming committee, sportsman’s club, prom committee, Mock Trial, and the Saco Jets baton twirling team and RSVP participant. She has volunteered with numerous organizations, including the Curtis Lake Church community spruce-up project in the church’s nursery at Waban, in blood drives, with Operation Tribute, the Salvation Army kettle drive and more. She plans to study occupational therapy at the University of New Hampshire.

Amanda Jane Cole Amanda is the daughter of Paul and Jane Cole of Sanford. She is a member of the National Honor Society and the National Technical Honor Society, and plans to study accounting at York County Community College in Wells. Cole has been a member of the concert band and art club, and was involved with graphic arts. She has had a dual enrollment with YCCC since her sophomore year. Cole was a volunteer with the Animal Welfare Society in West Kennebunk.

Elizabeth J. Helmreich Elizabeth Jeannette is the daughter of Crystal and Alan Helmreich of Sanford. She plans to study political science with a view to pre-law at Wheaten College in Norton, Massachu-setts, where she will play varsity field hockey. She is a member of the National Honor Society. Helmreich played varsity field hockey and varsity lacrosse throughout high school, and was captain of both teams her senior year. She was captain of the Mock Trial team, and was involved with Peer Helpers and chorus. She has volunteered with the Sanford Springvale Youth Athletic Association field hockey program, Head Start and Literacy Volunteers of Greater Sanford.

Allison Marie L’Heureux Allison is the daughter of Steven and Anne L’Heureux, and lives in Springvale. She is a member of the National Honor Society and plans to study engineering at the University of Maine. She has been a captain of the varsity field hockey team, played basketball, was a member of the varsity swim team, played varsity track and field, and was a member of the National Field Hockey Coaches Association all academic squad. She was a member of the Maine Elite Field Hockey Club, and was a volunteer summer camp counselor.

Lauren Faye Thompson Lauren is the daughter of Dale and Deanna Thompson of Sanford. A member of the National Honor Society and National Technical Honor Society, she plans to study biomedical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, Massachusetts. She was captain of the softball team, took part in Skills USA, and was a member of the Key Club, the Robotics Team, student council, the math team and more. Thompson was a cheerleader, played field hockey, took part in Sportsman’s Club, and was involved with the homecoming and prom committees.

Noah Patrick Scarpelli Colin Mark Patterson Noah is the son of John and Steva Scarpelli of Acton. A member of the National Honor Society, Scarpelli plans to study forensic science and chemistry at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He played basketball and cross country, was class vice president during his freshman year, ran cross country, was a member of the student council, and was a member of the prom and homecoming committees. He played baseball throughout high school and was a member of the swim team. Scarpelli volunteered with Strategies for a Stronger Sanford for four years.

Colin is the son of Mark and Suzanne Patterson of Sanford. He plans to major in bioengineering at the University of Maine in Orono. He ran junior varsity cross country for three years, and varsity cross country his senior year as well as track and field his junior year. Patterson has been involved with Key Club for four years, and with editing its bulletin locally and within the New England and Bermuda district for a couple of years. He was involved with Odyssey of the Mind, the Skills USA Maine project and the related technical math competition, and earned a bronze medal in the competition as a senior and the Maine Statesman Award as a junior, among other awards.

Sanford High School marks graduation

By TAMMY WELLS Senior Staff Writer SANFORD — Graduates dressed in red and white gowns milled around Sanford Veterans’ Memorial Gymnasium and the field at Cobb Stadium Friday evening, hugging, posing for photos, taking selfies, and reviewing memories – and making more. Around 240 Sanford High school seniors marked the end of their high school careers and the beginning of new adventures at commencement, held inside the gym amid the early threat of rain. Outside, before Sanford High School Band’s rendition of “Pomp and Circumstance” drew them inside, graduates chatted with friends and family, happy and excited to be ready for the world. “It's a good day,” said Zachary Kang, who is off to the University of Southern Maine in the fall and is exploring three majors, exercise science, physical therapy and occupational therapy. “I am very proud of everyone, and I will miss them,” he said. “It’s bittersweet,” said graduate Hannah Rossignol of graduation, who plans to study occupational therapy at the University of New Hampshire. “I’m excited,” said Lindsay Howes, who plans to attend cosmetology school. Courtney Grant plans to attend York County Community College in the fall, but her major is undecided – right now, she plans to continue doing what she enjoys best – showing her American saddlebred horse, Gina. Olivia Nicholson and Candace Sapiel both chose the U.S. Army – Nicholson is off for basic training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, at the end of July, while Sapiel departs for basic a month later. Nicholson said she went for

Sapiel comes from a long line of those who have served in the military. She said she hopes to be based in Japan one day. “I will miss everybody,” said Dyllan Waterman – a sentiment echoed by many. It was a hopes and dreams evening - with some advice and laughter thrown in for good measure. Salutatorian Rebecca Campbell reflected on childhood desire to always be older. “We were always desperate to grow up, to go to that first dance, to get our driver’s license,” she said. She urged her fellow graduates to appreciate the present and to enjoy memories. “Let us live with a child’s perspective, always ready to try new things,” Campbell said. Valedictorian Matthew Webber told his fellow graduates not to be afraid to fail.

King to TA grads: The greatest failure is not taking risks By LIZ GOTTHELF Staff Writer SACO — U.S. Sen. Angus King told Thornton Academy graduating seniors not to be afraid to make mistakes. King addressed the 391 graduates – the biggest class in the school’s history – Sunday afternoon at Linnell Gymnasium, where graduation was held due to rainy weather. King later went on stage again to shake every graduating senior’s hand after they received their diploma. King told the students to take more risks. “Reach further than you think you can, take that extra step,” he said. “If you’re not making mistakes, that means you’re not trying hard enough.” The independent senator told students he didn’t want them to look back at their lives later and regret not trying something. King told students to treat every job as the most important and do the best they can. He told students they were building a resume with every job. He described how his son, a week after graduating high school, went to work for Michael Dukakis’ campaign office and distinguished himself by making copies, coming in early, staying late, and doing whatever he was asked. he received a call from someone in President Bill Clinton’s office who had worked with him four years earlier, landing him a job in the White House. Two years later, he became the personal assistant to the president’s chief of staff. “All because he was a great Xeroxer,” said King. King also told students to always carry an extra $20 because they’ll never know when they might need it, and to never type something in cyberspace that they wouldn’t want their grandmother to read on the front page of a newspaper. Valedictorian Taylor Lamarre said that while genetically, everyone is 99.5 percent alike, everyone has their unique qualities. She told the rest of the graduating class to use their unique qualities to make positive change. Class Speaker Abby Runnells told fellow graduates to always take time to celebrate their victories and to remember the ones they have shared together that have helped shape their lives and make them the people they are. History teacher and faculty speaker Eric Marston told students that changing the world was not all about eliminating diseases and discovering ways to combat climate change,

He told students to focus their energy on being the best they can be every day. Marston told students to find their passion and to work in a career they love, as work takes up so much of everyone’s lives. “Do not settle. Keep searching for what it is that drives you,” he said. Marston talked about his wife Nancy’s battle against breast cancer and how her persistence led her to become a stronger person. “Facing adversity like cancer is very humbling,” he said. “It forces you to reprioritize and to appreciate what is truly important in life.” Marston talked about his wife’s optimism and how it has inspired others. “Her positivity is a lifestyle. She chooses to be happy regardless of the circumstances,” he said. He likened her to a solar-powered dancing flower. “Except her happy dance never stops. WHS announces Class of 2016 top 10 honors students

Tamar Eva Cimenian

Tamar, Class of 2016 salutatorian, is the daughter of Sonny and Irma Cimenian. Tamar plans to attend Colby College in the fall to major in creative writing. She has been an active member of the WHS math team and writing club, as well as concert, jazz, and marching bands and chorus. She has participated in fall and spring plays, the Girls in STEM Club, and the winter guard team. Tamar also volunteers regularly in the community. She is a National Honor Society member and an AP Scholar.

William Jack Hahn III William, the son of William and Penny Hahn, plans to attend the University of Southern Maine – Honors College to study history and secondary education. Jack has been a member of the math team, the Wells Street Journal (school newspaper), the outdoor track and field team, and the tennis team. He received the Conservation Committee Art Award for two consecutive years. Outside of WHS, Jack participates in Kenpo Karate, and has attained his green/ brown stripe belt. He also volunteers at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough.

Devyn Rae Harding Devyn, daughter of Zachary and Tina Harding, plans to attend

Colby College in Waterville with a double major in English and Spanish language and literature in hopes of becoming an English or Spanish teacher. While at Wells High School, Devyn has participated in fall and winter cheerleading, and volleyball. She has been a participant in the annual Cheers from the Heart fundraiser event, and received the team award in cheerleading.

Elise McCormack-Kuhman Elise, daughter of Virginia McCormack of Wells and David Kuhman of Manchester, New Hampshire, will be attending Massachu-setts Institute of Technology in the fall with plans to study mechanical engineering. While at WHS, she has participated in the Girls in STEM Club, the National Honor Society and the math team. She is also a member of the girls soccer team, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, basketball team, and softball team.

Anna Lynn Libby Anna, daughter of David and Karen Libby of Wells, plans to major in molecular biology at Colby College this fall. She has been a member

and captain of the color guard and winter guard teams at Wells High School. Anna is a National Merit Commended Scholar and was an officer in the National Honor Society. She has participated in several fall plays and spring musicals, and is on the track and field team. Outside of WHS, Anna enjoys Irish step dancing,and has participated in the 2014 and 2015 Macy’s Great American Marching Band in New York City.

Kate Marie Macolini Kate, daughter of John and Melissa Macolini of Wells, is the Class of 2016 valedictorian. Kate is president the National Honor Society, an AP Scholar with Honors and a National Merit Finalist. She is a member of the WHS math team and the political affairs club, and is involved with the Wells Street Journal (school newspaper). Kate is also secretary of her class. She is a member of the indoor and outdoor track and field teams, the cross country team, and the marching and concert bands. Kate is planning to major in chemical or mechanical engineering at the University of Maine at Orono – Honors College, where she hopes to be involved in renewable energy research and design.

Wells, will be attending Princeton University in the fall and plans to study economics. While at Wells High School, Seamus attended the United States Senate Page School in Washington, D.C. He is a Presidential Scholar semifinalist, a National Merit “Commended Scholar,” and AP Scholar with Distinction, and has earned high honors all trimesters during high school. Seamus is a member of the WHS golf team, which ranked 6th in the Western Maine Conference. He attended Boys State where he was elected governor. He was also a delegate to the American Legion Boys Nation.

Julia Kathleen Nixon Julia, daughter of Ellen and Eric Nixon of Wells, will be attending the University of Maine at Orono – Honor’s College and plans to major in biology/ pre-medicine. Julia was the recipient of the 2015 St. Anselm’s Book Award and is vice-president of the National Honor Society. She is also a member of the concert and marching bands, indoor and outdoor track and field teams, and the math team.

the University of New Hampshire to study journalism. She is a National Honor Society officer, editor-in-chief for the Wells Street Journal (school newspaper), and member of the concert and jazz bands. She has had lead roles in numerous fall and spring musicals. Outside of WHS, she takes ballet (pointe) tap and jazz dance and took part in the Macy’s Great American Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2014 and 2015.

Zachary Thomas Villemaire Zachary, son of Rick and Christal Villemaire, plans to attend Regent University in the fall to study business. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the WHS soccer team and has been a high honors recipient each trimester. Outside of Wells High School, Zachary actively participates in the Eliot Baptist Church Youth Group and has actively volunteered at the House of Hope Soup Kitchen.

‘Embrace life with open arms’ For Wells High graduates, answer is blowin’ in the wind

By MARISSA HEFFERNAN Special to Journal Tribune WELLS — At Warrior Memorial Field Sunday afternoon, caps were flying long before the end of Wells High School’s 113th commencement ceremony. While the day was sunny, a strong wind blew caps off heads and twisted the red and white gowns around the patiently waiting, soon-to-be-graduates’ legs. Principal Eileen Sheehy joked, “Now my job is to stand here and hold the podium down” as she began the ceremony. Sheehy’s speech focused on community support and service. She noted that the Class of 2016 – about 110 in all – had raised over $100,000 for various charities, including Wounded Warriors, American Heart Association and the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital. Salutatorian Tamar Cimenian continued with the humor, telling her classmates that “everything is pointless – school, relation-

ships, work, all of it – unless you choose to make it meaningful.” Cimenian said that what made her class special was that “we find our dreams, those ephemeral flashes of activity that make us think, ‘I could die happy doing this,’ and we pursue them.” She asked her classmates to “embrace life with open arms, and taste and savor all that it has to offer.” Class valedictorian Kate Macolini followed that theme. “Instead of continuously plotting every mundane detail of what will surely be a grand adventure, I ask you instead to, at least for this week, appreciate each day as it comes,” she said. Macolini focused her speech on memories made. “I cannot know what your Wells High School is, but here’s a bit of mine,” she said. Graduating senior Tyler Whitten said the hardest part of graduation was getting

dressed. “Today, probably the most stressful part was getting the robe on and making sure you didn’t forget anything,” said Whitten. “Once you get this robe on, you’re done – you just have to grab the certificate and walk away.” Nick Cousins had a slightly different view of commencement, calling it “kind of nervewracking.” “It’s crazy that today’s the day we’re done with this,” Cousins said. The two friends will both be attending Thomas College in the fall – Whitten for criminal justice; Cousins for criminal justice and forensic psychology. Although the day was windy, graduating senior Lindsey Myers was happy to be graduating outside and not in a crowded, hot building. For Myers, who finished her schooling online, the hardest part of high school was the “people, grades – everything.”
