Green leads Foxes cross-country to Conference Championship Leonard Banks

“I knew the final part of the race was downhill, and I knew I had to give it all I got.”

Miranda Green led the way at the first 4A North Conference 22 crosscountry championship, held at Loriella Park, in Fredericksburg.

On Wednesday, at Loriella Park, at the first Conference 22 championship, King George High School junior Miranda Green left no doubt that she is the Fredericksburg area’s number-one cross-country runner. Throughout the race, Liberty runner Taylor Brown and Green raced side by side, with neither runner attempting to pull away. “I knew the final part of the race was downhill, and I knew I had to give it all I got,” Green said. “She (Brown) was helping me push, and I was pushing her.” However, that all changed during the final quarter mile, as Green separated herself from Taylor and the rest of the pack with a sprint that landed her the individual championship. She finished the race with a time of

20:19. Hampered with a missing standout runner - Ashley Perkins, who was out of the line-up due to illness - King George High School crosscountry head coach Cathy Binder had to rely on the team to step up against the field of competing schools. “Whenever you take out a good runner, it hurts overall, but our girls stepped up today, and did very

well,” Binder said. Along with Green’s historic finish, Foxes Kristen Hornbaker (20:44) narrowly edged out Fauquier runner Shayne Halligan (20:45) for third place. Anna Kniceley (21:44) cruised past Eastern View’s Brianna Mihalek (21:57) to secure an eighth-place finish, while fellow Foxes teammate Brooke West (22:13) overcame Chancellor runner Jade Tucker (22:15) for the tenth spot at the finish. Maddie Amos (22:26, 14th) and Nicole Brem (22:32, 15th) rounded out the final top 15 runners. The Foxes girls are by far the area’s cross-country dynasty. They have won the last five district championships. The last time the boys’ team made it to the Regional Championship was 2007. Last season, the Foxes girls’ team finished second in the region, while the Foxes boys had only one qualifier - Christian Koon.

Foxes overwhelm Caroline Cavaliers Leonard Banks Sports editor There was never a doubt in the mind of Foxes (7-2) varsity football coach Jeff Smith that last week’s 35-7 loss to Courtland represented a temporary Foxes stumbling block for the fortunes of a playoff-bound team. Not only did the Foxes find redemption Cavaliers in their 45-14 win over visiting Caroline, but they rediscovered their swagger along with a renewed confidence level. “I thought we put a little too much pressure on them in terms of how important that game was,” Smith said. “The game was for the district championship, and if we won that game, it could have meant smooth sailing. Of course we would have to beat Chancellor, but it would have put us in a better position.” If the Foxes are successful against the 1-7 Chargers, the will host a 4-A North Conference playoff game. This week, Smith told his team to relax and focus on having fun. After hearing that, the Foxes shook off the memories of the Cougar loss, and simply played the game the way they know best. After an evenly played first half, they dominated the second

half on both sides of the line. Senior running back/defensive back, Jordi Estes scored on four different occasions, while finishing the game with 107 rushing yards. After their offense shifted into cruise control, 14 different players carried the ball from the backfield, totaling a combined 335 yards. As for the Cavaliers, Rashaard Harris struggled with two crucial interceptions as he completed 16 passes out of 36 for 141 yards and two touchdowns. To his credit, there were six dropped balls that were potential touchdowns. It took King George less than two minutes to march 90 yards down the field for the game’s first touchdown. Collectively, Corey Henderson and Kendall Harvey aided in the rushing effort that resulted in a two-yard touchdown by Estes. The Cavaliers started the second quarter with an 18-yard touchdown pass from Harris to Will Howard. Sparked by an interference penalty against the Cavaliers (Reggie Twisdale), the Foxes sustained a 41yard drive that ended with a 15-yard touchdown run by Estes. The Foxes began the third quarter with an injury to running back/ defensive back Markiece Johnson. Johnson is essential to the Foxes’ defensive and offensive attack. Midway in the third quarter, Estes broke the game wide open with a 45yard jaunt over the right side of the

Foxes running back Markiece Johnson (#3, right) eludes Cavalier tacklers. In the fourth quarter, after a botched punt attempt, the Foxes capitalized on the Cavaliers’ misfortunes with a Eian Chase 15-yard touchdown run. With 7:02 left in the game, Harris found Howard wide open for a 28yard touchdown. However, with time running out, along with a field goal by Jacob Perkins to finalize the Foxes scoring (45-14), the game came to a merciful end.

Cavaliers defensive line. Estes’ efforts resulted in the Foxes extending their lead to 21-6. With 3:35 left in the quarter, Estes continued to haunt the Cavaliers, as he returned a touchdown for 55 yards—extending the Foxes lead to 28-6.
