A row of students performing on stage leads the viewer through the image, ending with the primary subject — the student in the foreground. A large star positioned over the student’s head helps define him as the focal point, while variation in the performers’ costumes adds variety and interest to the repetition in the background.

In a space filled with mixing bowls, kitchen utensils and ingredients, the subject in this photo easily could have been overwhelmed by her surroundings. By utilizing a shallow depth of field, the photographer made the chef the focal point of the image.

My Turn Roy Tugbang, photographer Catherine Rossi, adviser Cardinal Carter Academy for the Arts North York, ON This row of musicians at a concert recital effectively leads the viewer through the image from left to right. The shallow depth of field helps separate the two primary subjects in the foreground from the large orchestra in the background while adding contextual information.
