GRAND PRIZE Grassfield High School Yearbook Staff Chesapeake, VA Rachel Goodman, adviser Judges’ comments . “I feel like I am right there,” said one judge of the dominant photo. They applauded the eye-flow of the layout, which begins with the dominant photo. The focus of the primary subject leads the viewer’s eye to the headline, on which a well-done Cut-Out-Background photo is anchored. After reading the feature story and looking at the infographic, the viewer’s eye is lead back to the dominant photo by the primary subject in the tilted photo. The well-orchestrated coverage points and eye-flow grab and maintain the viewer’s attention.

Judges’ comments The judges loved the clever use of photos within the headline text on this spread. The graphic nature of the horizontal bars, combined with strong color, add energy to the spread — energy that leads the viewer to the quotes on the right side of the page. Judges also applauded the attention to detail demonstrated on this spread through emphasizing the word OUR in the feature story and repeating the pixelated photo graphic as folio art.

Judges’ comments The dominant photo on this spread is obviously larger than the other photos, a design strategy that the judges appreciated. A large dominant photo allows the eye to find a place to anchor before roaming around the page. This roam is guided, though — another design strategy that the judges appreciated. The chef in the dominant photo is looking down toward the headline. Graphics and photos are placed in such a way that the viewer wants to explore each detail of the page one at a time, from most important to least important.

Judges’ comments In this award-winning spread, the yearbook staff created an eye-line of white space running from below the dominant photo on the left onto the right-hand page. This thin white line serves to unify the two pages into one beautiful spread. Difficult to do well, this spread boasts a headline on top of the dominant photo, along with stunning coordinated colors and great coverage. The judges also took note of the coverage technique of including student photos as part of the page number folios. Because the staff included so many students in a visually organized way, this spread is sure to be enjoyed by many in the school community.

Judges’ comments The judges loved this magazine-inspired spread. They noted that it includes multiple entry points that will attract viewers: a graphically-interesting quote, lovely photos, numbers as a quick-read area and a feature story.

Judges’ comments Wow. Talk about coverage. This one spread includes quirky information about at least 44 students. The judges applauded this staff’s dedication to making sure every student is covered in fun ways throughout the yearbook, making it a book that will be treasured by many for years to come.


JUDGES John Dent Dos Pueblos High School Goleta, CA John Dent advises the daily broadcast, DPNews, and the yearbook, The Image, at Dos Pueblos High School in Goleta, CA. He twice has been named Regional Occupational Program Outstanding Instructor for media. This Canadian national brought The Image national recognition with award-winning photography and design. In six years, the Dos Pueblos program has earned Silver and Gold Crowns, an NSPA First Class with four letters of distinction and two NSPA Best in Show. The Dos Pueblos yearbook has won several design and photo contests, including Grand prize in the 2013 YearTech Online Design Contest.

Margie Mohtasham Raper Wakeland High School Frisco, TX Margie Raper advises student publications and teaches journalism and photojournalism at Wakeland High School in Frisco, TX. Over her career of ten years in scholastic journalism, her students have earned ILPC Star honors, individual state honors and been recognized nationally as CSPA medalists and NSPA All-Americans. She is a JEA certified journalism educator, board secretary for the Texas Association of Journalism Educators, and holds a Masters of Education in Technology Leadership.
