STUDIO BRIEF 2.

RESEARCH.

The chosen paths, based on the brief, were information & way-finding/product & packaging. The research was, therefore, very practically lead. A theoretical understanding of bouldering moves was derived from video tutorials and magazine articles, while the practical understanding came from the physical exploration of bouldering.

STUDIO BRIEF 2.

CONCEPT.

The concept was derived from the chosen paths and aimed at providing technical support and theory in bouldering to new/novice climbers. Research into existing info-graphics on the topic showed that most designs were either tacky and without aesthetic consideration or not specifically relevant to bouldering. The aim was to visualise various moves in the most understandable way.

An Introduction to Bouldering. THE LAY-BACK.

White Cartridge Paper.

A3 Portrait, Single Sheets, Text and Image.

The font choice was based on the aesthetics involved in bouldering; the slab serif mimicking holds on a wall. The colour scheme was derived from the various coloured holds present in different bouldering centres. The stock choice was considered in line with the rough, callous skin of climbers hands, while the size and orientation were chosen for maximum readability and legibility. STUDIO BRIEF 2.

PRODUCTION.

Based on the hands on ethos of bouldering the production was mainly hand crafted, with exception for the digitally designed and printed posters. The packaging was hand cut and sprayed and the posters + glossary were hand bound with coloured thread.
