What’s new from the JORVIK Group Learning Team?

Whilst the lockdown and social distancing have brought many changes to our practices across the JORVIK Group, we’ve been working hard to make sure that schools can still access our immersive and inspiring learning experiences during this new academic year. The Learning Team has been speaking to teachers and learning professionals, both locally and internationally, to share ideas about connecting across distances and creating new opportunities for meaningful engagement with students. We are committed to maintaining this dialogue with schools as we go into this new academic year together and we really want to hear your thoughts about ensuring students’ access to our collections and our fantastic shared heritage. You can get in touch via our enquiry pages, teacher surveys or by signing up for our dedicated schools mailing list- visit https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/learning-mailing-list/ to find out more. Read on to learn more about how you can help your students connect to the past and foster their curiosity.

New Virtual Outreach Programme Wherever you are based, you can invite a host of historical characters or our friendly archaeologists into your classroom, supporting your delivery of history, literacy, science and other cross-curricular sessions.

Meet the Medieval Medic: Learn about medieval diagnosis and cures as you explore the tools of the trade for physicians, surgeons and other healers from our medieval medic.

With these immersive and interactive sessions, you won’t miss out on any of the fun you would have visiting our attractions as we have adapted our award-winning school workshops and activities for exclusive access online.

Prices start from £85 per session and we now offer discounts on multiple bookings so it’s easier than ever before to book several sessions to support your pupils’ learning.

We currently offer virtual outreach via Skype, Zoom and Google Meet, but we are happy to discuss other platforms. We can even include children studying from home, meaning everyone in your class can stay connected as we explore the past together. Meet a Viking: Your students can discover what life was like in the Viking Age from the perspective of different inhabitants of the city of Jorvik- meet with the settlers living in the Viking city, marvel at goods from distant lands, or hear tales of warriors, gods and giants. DIG! Virtual: Hear from one of our friendly archaeologists, see some exclusive finds from York’s excavations and enjoy a session exploring the fascinating archaeology of a period of your choice.

Object Loan Boxes for the Classroom We have made some changes to our Loan Box procedure this year to ensure they are as safe as possible to use and still provide you with the opportunity to engage your class in object-centred learning.

All loan boxes cost ÂŁ24 to hire for the first week, and ÂŁ6 for every subsequent week. Full details of Loan Boxes and sample images of the contents can be found at: https://www.jorvikvikingcentre.co.uk/ education/classroom-resources/

We have a range of loan boxes for you to borrow, covering a variety of periods and topics. These include the Vikings, Roman Britain, Yorkshire Prehistory, Tudor life and British Archaeology. These boxes have been designed to complement study at KS2 but can be used by other age groups, SEN groups or home learners. Loan boxes are collected from our DIG attraction and can be borrowed for up to four weeks.
